HOVE PARK Our regular healthy living article from Mary Henderson, a doctoral researcher in gut health...

ARE YOU GETTING ENOUGH PROTEIN? Now, first of all, I want to point out that I’m not an advocate of the paleo diet, nor any other fad diet which overly focuses on any one food group. Too much protein long-term has negative health consequences. But what I am talking about is whether we get enough protein as part of a healthy balanced diet. There is a hypothesis which suggests that when we don’t get enough protein, we end up overeating, mostly in the form of high-carb, high-fat snacks, whilst our bodies are still hungry for protein but confused. A lot of people don’t have time to plan breakfast if they make time for breakfast at all, and with popular toast and cereal options providing little protein, these could kick start the day with an appetite for snacking. This is also something to think about for those trying to lose weight through diet and exercise. Weight loss can mean muscle loss and exercise works muscles which both mean increased protein needs. Protein intake estimates for the average adult is around 0.6-0.75g of protein per kg of body weight, more if you exercise, which can mean about 52.5g per day. Protein can be found in nuts, dairy products, pulses, meat and eggs and can be quickly calculated by looking at the nutritional contents on the pack or googling

it. So if you find yourself snacking, why not try a little experiment of your own and see how your appetite varies over the course of the day after trying to hit your protein target at breakfast time. Mary Henderson

A photograph from the 1900s when this was little more than its name implied a droveway from the west over the hills to London Road and to Lewes. The farm buildings formed part of King’s Farm and Dairy, but before long this became Hole’s Farm and the buildings were modernised. Residential development started early in the 1920s and as this gathered momentum the farm, as such, ceased to exist, becoming a depot for the dairy.

Earthworks is a weekly space for the men to get together to grow and harvest an abundance of vegetables, flowers and fruit. Led by a hospice counsellor and a volunteer gardener, it’s a welcoming and supportive environment in which to work, whilst enjoying getting outside in the fresh air. Jane Cato from the hospice’s Bereavement Team said, “It’s all very relaxed; each morning begins with a cuppa in the allotment shed. Previous gardening experience isn’t important; you can take on whichever jobs interest you. There’s nowhere else in Brighton & Hove for bereaved men to get together. So, it makes sense to find an alternative way to support those men, since we know we can help them.” To find out more about Earthworks, or to sign up, please contact the Martlets’ Patient and Family Support Administrator on 01273 273400, or email

HOVE PARK Hove Park School is opening its Valley Campus on Christmas Day for those who would otherwise be alone...

TOGETHER AT CHRISTMAS... Christmas for most people is about a time to rest, relax and catch up with family and friends. But for many older adults in our community Christmas only reinforces the feeling of loneliness and isolation. The impact of being on their own without the opportunity to meet and talk to others can often be damaging both in terms of their mental, physical and emotional health. I said when I became the Head Teacher of Hove Park that I wanted it to be ‘more than just a place where students come to learn’. I want our school to be an integral part of the community we serve. So this year the staff at Hove Park School have decided to do Christmas a different way. We wanted to make a difference to the people in our community. So we came up with the idea that we would open our school on Christmas Day and serve Christmas lunch to those that would otherwise be on their own. Our planning started by meeting with Emily Kenward (founder and CEO of Time to Talk - Befriending).

Listening to her and the incredible work the charity does, we knew this would be a vital source of help and support. Through Emily we were able to secure the services of a professional chef to prepare and cook the food. We then began writing and e-mailing local businesses. Within a matter of hours, we had offers to supply us with cutlery, catering equipment, tables and chairs, crackers and wine. The local business community have risen to the occasion and their generosity has been amazing. All members of our school community will be contributing to our plans. Each year group will provide 12 Christmas hampers - one for each of our guests to take home and enjoy. In addition, each tutor group will be responsible for writing a Christmas card to each of our guests with the sentiment ‘Thinking of you at Christmas’. The offers of help and support have been overwhelming and shows what can be achieved when a school and community comes together. If you are interested in seeing how this uplifting event develops and brings our wider community together please follow us on Facebook - https://www.facebook. com/HoveParkSchool/ Jim Roberts, Head Teacher For further information, contact Emily at Time to Talk Befriending: To help raise much-needed funds for this event Hove Park School is hosting a Christmas Market on Tuesday 4th December, 5-7.30pm, at their Valley Campus in Hangleton Way. Please come along and grab a few Christmas bargains!

HOVE PARK Update from the Friends of Three Cornered Copse...

WINTER PREPARATIONS AT THREE CORNERED COPSE... Our latest workday was on one of the first cold weekends of this year, but still we mustered together eight volunteers, plus Garry our Park Ranger (and his smart new truck), and we set about preparing Three Cornered Copse, in our small way, for the oncoming winter. The 400 trees we planted in the spring at the top of the copse needed some maintenance; some had outgrown their plastic collars, so we removed a great many of these. Others had struggled to take and grow, but the majority looked healthy for forming a new habitat next spring for our native wildlife species. We cleared some of the shrubs which had grown over the entrances to the copse, but there are other places that need more work in future work sessions. We picked litter, tidied up pathways, just housekeeping, and did a great deal of clearing around the coronation stone and the silver birches.

Your local experts in... Based in HOVE • Tree surgery • Lawn installations • Garden Restorations • Lawn mowing services • Zero Maintenance gardens fully insured and licensed Jonathan Ellman- Brown 01273 239100 / 07876 593896

In previous years the council mower would keep a pathway open through this area, but they have decided to not use the smaller mower here. The cold weather and threatening skies hastened an earlier finish to the workday, which proved to be popular. The bonfire night and Halloween celebrations have left a mark in a couple of areas on the grassy areas; unfortunately the damage to the grass of a small bonfire takes a year or two to recover, even with re-seeding and dressing. If you’re venturing into the copse there are still things to see. One of the stars in the vegetation is several spindle trees (Euonymus) in the copse, and at this time of year they are striking, with the foliage blossom like a dark pink popcorn. It’s one of our oldest native trees, and can live to 100 years, though the ones in the copse seem much younger. In legend it was also thought that if the spindle flowered early, an outbreak of the plague was likely. Let’s hope not. We have one more workday coming up this year, on Wednesday 19th December, with a list of jobs to do. Dismantling the broken bench, planting three saplings, repairing the habitat hedge... All volunteers, old and new, are welcome. It’s a tradition to have mince pies at our coffee break in the December workday. Until next year, please have a peaceful Christmas holiday, with best wishes from the Friends of Three Cornered Copse. Simon Baxendale

HOVE PARK A last chance to visit this lovely event...

BEACH HUT ADVENT CALENDAR Having run the Beach Hut Advent Calendar since 2008, the small team of people from BEYOND have decided that 2018 will be its last year. It attracts hundreds of people to the seafront each night in December to see the beach hut art installations created around a Nativity theme. This simple concept involves one hut each night in Advent opening up to showcase an art installation from 5.30pm-6.30pm. Only one hut is open each night and there are free mince pies and warming drinks. The art is created by individual artists; beach hut owners; community groups; schools and churches; and there have been an extraordinary range of different creative approaches. These have included live donkeys, laser shows, ice sculptures, dance, poetry, spacemen, crib scenes and lots of angels and stars. The Beyond team will now focus on other projects but are open to others taking on the Beach Hut Advent Calendar mantle if they would like the event to continue. Email if you are interested and details of the schedule of opening this year are on A campaign to help people in fuel poverty...

PROJECT WENCESLAS Brighton Lions Club is launching Project Wenceslas, a campaign to help combat fuel poverty in the city of Brighton and Hove. People who receive the annual Winter Fuel Payment and feel they do not need it are invited to donate the amount to Brighton Lions, who can assure that every penny will go towards alleviating fuel poverty. Fuel poverty has increased mainly due to rising energy prices and more people die from cold housing than die on the roads each year. Donations can be made through Brighton Lions Club’s website at or cheques payable to Brighton Lions Club should be sent to the club at Lions Dene, The Deneway, Brighton, BN1 5AZ. People sending cheques are asked to confirm that their donations may be treated as Gift Aid so that the value of the donation can be increased by 25%. Martlets is taking fund-raising to a sizzling new level with a challenge that will inspire and give you a feel-good high, whilst raising money to support local people. HOVE PARK The latest news from the Friends of Hove Park...

APPROACHING CHRISTMAS IN HOVE PARK After the incredible weather of 2018 our trees are settling down for a well earned winter rest. However first they are providing a brilliant finale with their colourful canopies complemented by equally colourful carpets of leaves. The guelder rose whips we planted in 2016 are beginning to make their small contribution to the autumn colour. Persephone has finished her stint greeting visitors to Hove Park and is joining the other snails for the Snailspace Farewell Event (November 30th to December 2nd) before being auctioned for the Martlets Hospice on December 3rd. By the time you read this we should have planted another 5,000 Purple4Polio crocuses, again donated by the Brighton and Hove Soiree Rotary Club. These corms are being planted alongside the others in the area around the miniature railway loop at the bottom of the Droveway and will add to the welcome splash of colour greeting the Spring. The Friends are pleased to have been presented with a 2018 It’s Your Neighbourhood Award of Level 4 -Thriving by the Royal Horticultural Society and South and South East in Bloom as a mark of ongoing development. And last but not least, we’d like to wish you all a Very Happy Christmas. Friends of Hove Park

Our regular book review by Hove resident Anne Doyle...

MY LIFE IN HOUSES BY MARGARET FORSTER The first time I used Libraries Extra was on a visit to Rottingdean library. It felt singularly furtive scanning the card, punching in the password then the click of the door as I let myself in. Having the library completely to myself with no staff present and no other browsers seemed all too illicit. The outlying city branch libraries are always worth a visit to the dedicated book lover offering up some unexpected reading in an environment that’s smaller and making it easier to scan everything that’s stocked. And now with Libraries Extra you can visit them even when they’re unstaffed. As I made my way along the shelves, books I’ve read reviews on and newly published books that had up till then escaped my notice all demanded attention. However familiar favourite authors of up until then unknown titles invariably came to the fore.

HOVE PARK I’ve read most of Margaret Forster’s excellent work that has been gathering successful publication from the 1970s. Invariably her fictional narratives simultaneously give an account of social history in Britain through the story of women’s lives. Having never before though read any of her biography, I pounced on this enticingly titled paperback as soon as I spotted it. An ingenious way of relating her memoir, the author unfolds the telling of her life through the prism of all the homes she’s ever lived in. Starting from her birth in a council house on a new estate in Carlisle to her much loved home in London’s Hampstead which was bought for, in today’s prices, an unbelievable £5,000, though in dire need of updating and complete with an elderly sitting tenant. She writes with sensitivity and clarity, offering the perspective of her life as a writer, mother and wife through the homes that meant so much to her and which shaped her life with husband journalist and writer Hunter Davies and their three children. Following this work written in her mid 70s, one final novel was published posthumously in 2016 from the cancer that she writes candidly about here. I for one will be reading more of her non-fiction which maybe I’ll come across out of hours in one of Brighton & Hove’s other branch libraries. Read lots more of Anne’s book reviews, along with links to authors talking about their work, on her blog site annedoyle.

HOVE PARK News from Hove-based charity Off The Fence...

BIG SLEEP OUT RAISES OVER £12,000 FOR CITY’S HOMELESS Despite the thunder storms and high winds, armed with only warm clothes and sleeping bags to protect them against the November night, around 50 people took part in the Big Sleep Out to raise money for Off The Fence, a charity committed to providing life-saving support for the homeless. Among those spending the night under the stars were: Ultimate U, Sutton Winson, Sawyer & Co and Kier Construction, as well as youth groups, family groups and individuals. The event started with a loud thunder storm with amazing lightning, which did not discourage the participants. Everyone survived the night and were rewarded with bacon butties from Youth With A Mission (YWAM) first thing in the morning. Sawyer & Co said: “We were delighted to be part of this.” Sleeping in Aldrington School playground isn’t quite the same as sleeping on the streets; however it does give participants an opportunity to get an insight into the challenges faced by those sleeping rough. Some of the participants were as young as 13 years old and many had taken part in previous years too. Paul Young, the founder of Off The Fence, celebrating his 20th sleep out, said: “Each year gets bigger and better! It was an honour to share the night with a fantastic group of people. Thank you for your support to raise funds to prevent death on the streets of our city.” To find out how you can take part next time, or even host your own event, contact Off The Fence on 01273 933885.

28 The Brighton City Singers are looking for new voices...

YOUR LOCAL CHOIR NEEDS YOU! Brighton City Singers is a fun, sociable choir with absolutely no pressure. When you arrive for your taster session the atmosphere is friendly and relaxed. There are no scary auditions or sight reading, you just sit down and join in. The first session is free, so you can make up your mind if you’d like to join. You don’t need a good voice or any experience. If you like to sing just for the fun of it, you will fit in perfectly. We sing every type of music from Motown to Mozart, led by the feisty, funny MJ. MJ Paranzino is a dynamic personality, an ex-performer with a big voice, who spurs us on to sing like we never dreamed we could. She is particularly good at getting the most out of the male singers, who might start off rather quiet and unsure, then end up sounding strong and confident. The wonderful thing about this choir is not only that it sounds beautiful by itself; there are three other choirs in the group - South London Choir, West London Choir and the Hastings Town singers. This means when there is a big concert all four choirs come together and sound massive!

The social aspect of Brighton City Singers is one of the best things about it. Many people go to the pub after rehearsal, and we have a ‘Choir Party Extravaganza’ every February. Even if I have no time for more than a quick hello to my neighbours during rehearsal I have a comforting feeling of belonging. The singing is really stress-busting after a hard day at work, and it always lifts my spirits. At £25 per month it is a really feel-good affordable activity. Why not give it a try? It’s true, you really can sing yourself happy! Annie Watkins The Brighton City Singers take part in many performances over the year; some of my most memorable moments have been singing beautiful Christmas music in the Atrium at the V&A, rocking gospel songs at the Curious Arts Festival and joining a children’s choir in West London at a charity concert to support Grenfell Tower residents. There are local concerts too, including a lovely carol service every Christmas at St John’s Church in Hove. All events are optional.

Brighton City Singers meet on Wednesday nights, 7-9pm, at Brunswick Primary School, Somerhill Road, Hove.
