An extract from the reminiscences of Derek Earl...

Reminiscences of Hassocks Derek Earl has lived in Keymer for over 80 years. This extract from his reminiscences of life in the 1930s looks at the area between Hassocks Station and London Road. On the west side of the station, in Station Approach (west) were a row of tiny cottages (Victorian provision for railway staff) facing the up line platform to London. Beside these were three shops - the dairy owned by Mr Baker, Munro’s sweet shop and Rookard’s the butchers. Then came Stanford Avenue and Semley Road, running north with little change except for the loss of Ravenswood, home of Dr and Mrs Horner, and North Court in Stanford Avenue moving westward towards London Road. Here stood Stonepound Farm, owned by the Powell family. The farm was arable and dairy, running north on the east side of London Road to The Friar’s Oak, passing two shops on the right, Bambers toy shop and Barkers, general provisions. The farmland ran east to the railway embankment and south to the rear of Stanford Avenue and Semley Road and up to Little Copse Road. Back to the shops west of Stanford Avenue: a large store selling provisions, by the name of Moores, next to which

was a large newsagent’s and sweetshop owned by Mr Hoad, who I believe was also a part time policeman. Then came Mr Hewitt the hairdresser who used hand driven clippers and razors — none of the fancy electrical equipment of today! Next door, at the bottom of North Bank, was the Clayton Park Hotel, a public house. The steep embankment of North Bank was largely unchanged with large Victorian villas further up the hill, rumoured to have originally been the homes of directors of the early Southern Railway. The unmade road ends at the busy Stonepound Crossroads, which one crosses over to continue westward along the Hurst Road, little changed, following the line of the Roman Greensand Way. Passing on past Ham Farm, run by Mr Broad, down Wickham Hill passing large Victorian houses on its north side, one is now in the village of Hurstpierpoint. Extensive farmland lay north to the rear of these properties. Derek Earl

There will be a nationwide commemoration of the First World War Armistice...

Remembrance Sunday On 11th November a nationwide day of commemorative events, “Battle’s Over”, will mark the centenary of the end of the First World War and pay tribute to the millions killed or wounded in battle, and those on the home front who helped ensure freedom survived. At 6am 1,000 pipers around the world will commence the day’s commemorations with the traditional Scottish lament played at the end of battle – Battle’s O’er. At 6.55pm buglers will sound the Last Post at more than 1,000 locations, where at 7pm World War One Beacons of Light will be lit in a tribute signifying the light of peace that emerged from the darkness of four years of war. Then at 7.05pm 1,000 cathedrals and churches will ring out their bells in celebration of peace and more than 140 town criers will join in an International Cry for Peace around the world. St Cosmas and St Damian Church, Keymer, will hold remembrance services at 8am and 9.45am, with a twominute silence at 11am. St Francis Church in Priory Road will have a Remembrance Sunday service at 9.45am.

Local news...

Ditchling Museum of Art + Craft celebrates its fifth birthday Five years after its renovation, on 22nd September people flocked in from the local area and around to celebrate the birthday of this marvellous contemporary arts museum despite the wet autumnal weather. The museum, originally a Victorian school founded by Hilary and Joanna Bourne, has been modernised to an open plan contemporary building by Adam Richards Architects, sitting snug by the comfort of the South Downs on Ditchling Village Green. The shop and café, originally an 18th century cart lodge, stays true to its historic roots with original beams and wooden furniture to create a comforting atmosphere from a once empty barn. During the day at the museum, the museum provided a ray of colour despite the dull day and featured workshops of tie-dying, embroidery and natural dye using the museum’s own natural dye garden. The day featured music from King Purple and spoken word poets, and a printing press demonstration using the Stanford Press. In the café, red velvet cupcakes with the number 5 became a bestseller to adults and children alike. The shop and cart lodge featured books by the museum’s own Gerry Warner on Protest Knits and jewellery by Zoe Allen. On the village green itself was a towering, colourful Belonging Bandstand designed by Morag Myerscough and Luke Morgan. The bandstand toured Sussex, including Eastbourne and Brighton, and returned to the museum to coincide with the Sign Machine featured in the museum’s Introduction Space to tie in with the exhibition on Corita Kent. Despite the damp day, the bandstand served as a bright feature for the birthday celebrations. Over these five years, the museum has featured exhibitions from Eric Gill: ‘The Body’ to John Vernon Lord: A Catalogue of Life and Corita Kent. Max Gill: Wonder-

Max Gill’s work was once prominently in the public eye, particularly his brightly-coloured pictorial maps, graphic designs for book covers, and posters for transport and communications companies in the first half of the 20th century. His best-known piece, the large 1914 Wonderground Map, was hung at every London Underground station, and he also designed the lettering used on the Cenotaph.
