Meet a local resident who is a coach practitioner...

Hanover Person...Sarah Bradley Sarah Bradley lives in Coleman Street. She has spent 30 years working in secondary education and is now a coach practitioner. How long have you lived in Hanover?

We moved into our house on Coleman Street in 1998 so it’s been 20 years now. What do you like about the area?

The fact that you can walk everywhere… to the park, the sea, the North Laine and of course The Geese! The friendliness… You can make a friend for life by starting up a conversation on a street corner. What do you do as a coach practitioner and why did you decide to become one?

Like many people in their middle age, I wanted a change. I wanted to use the skills I’d developed as a teacher in a different way and coaching seemed to fit the bill. I loved developing positive relationships with students and motivating them and now I can do this with my clients, as their coach.

I help people of all ages and backgrounds find out what it is they want to do and need to do to feel happier, more fulfilled with their lives. This might include tackling feelings of being ‘stuck’, or of low confidence after a difficult time. Some clients might want to achieve better health and wellbeing, whilst others want to concentrate on work issues. The topics are endless. My role is to listen without prejudice and help clients set goals so that they can move forward. What kinds of people can you help?

Back-up your back, strengthen your spine, activate your Abs. Gentle, remedial, Physiotherapist-led Pilates for all ages and levels of fitness. Absolute Beginners Wednesday 10.30-11.30am at Hanover Community Centre ( starts 7th November) Improvers Tuesday 5.30-6.30pm at Brighton Marina Dance Studios. 6 week courses, walk-ins welcome but booking highly advisable as my classes are small. One 2 One for intensive results.

Please contact Julie Crocker 07984146003

Anyone! Anyone who wants to make the process work so that they can get results from their investment in the sessions.

I’m also interested in coaching GCSE and A level students through what can be a very stressful time. Coaching sessions support a student in many ways; helping to alleviate worry, take responsibility, develop better time management skills and set realistic, achievable goals. What do you like to do when you’re not working? I love to swim in the sea and try to go daily until the ocean tells me otherwise! I’m a member of The Jam Tarts choir; singing in a large group is another great way to feel good. And I love to go walking on the Downs with my husband. We’re so lucky to have the sea and the Downs so close to where we live. For more information email sarahnbradley60@ or call 07765 370715.

An annual film festival...

Film Festival...CINECITY CINECITY – a citywide film festival - is returning from 9th to 25th November 2018, with the best in world cinema, a mix of premieres and previews, treasures from the archive and live cinema events. Highlights will include a 25th anniversary screening of Derek Jarman’s Blue, a reflection of his losing battle with Aids against the backdrop of a blue screen. The soundtrack will be performed live by Simon Fisher Turner with narration by poet and musician Black Sifichi.

Another highlight of this year’s festival is Lizzie, directed by Craig William Macneill. Chloë Sevigny stars as the notorious 19th century alleged murderess Lizzie Borden opposite Kristen Stewart as an Irish housemaid with whom she begins a secret romance.

In The Kindergarten Teacher, directed by Sara Colangelo, Maggie Gyllenhaal gives a career-best performance as a kindergarten teacher who oversteps her bounds in a mission to help one of her students. Legendary Czech film-maker and Cinecity favourite Jan Švankmajer returns with Insect, which he reports

will be his last film. It mixes live action with his trademark macabre stop-motion animation.

Venues this year for CINECITY include the Sallis Benney Theatre in Grand Parade, Duke of York’s Picturehouse, Fabrica Gallery and The Basketmakers Arms in Gloucester Road. For more information visit

Volunteers to help organise each street taking part have already been recruited but if you’d like to know more about what’s going on, how to get more involved and when particular streets are being decorated you can join our Facebook group, Hanoveradventcalendar, or email The volunteers will also be communicating with their streets and encouraging people to decorate their windows. So let’s take this chance to make Hanover as shiny and sparkly as we can in those long winter nights and at the same time have the chance to get to know your neighbours and fellow Hanoverians better.

Ben does all the measuring and quoting – he’s a tall chap with a tape measure and a friendly smile. Saskia stays behind the scenes and is currently busy looking after our young daughter, uploading products onto our new website and keeping up to date on the social media. We have two shops, one in Crowborough and the other in Brighton; both shops hold samples of all the latest and best fabrics, flooring, wallpaper and more. We measure, design, fit and install curtains, blinds, sofas, chairs, headboards, carpets, vinyl flooring and stair runners. So if it’s curtains you need or a blind or you’d like some new carpet or a stair runner… get in touch with us, visit our shops and our friendly and knowledgeable teams will help you choose a simple fabric update or design a full house redecoration. This month’s councillor report is from Emma Daniel, Labour councillor for Hanover & Elm Grove...

Councillor News...Emma Daniel

Over the last few weeks many of us have witnessed with horror a survivor of sexual assault giving televised testimony in the USA and, despite her compelling evidence, the perpetrator being appointed as a Supreme Court Judge and further being called a liar by the President. For survivors this will have affected them very deeply and I would like to highlight the local project - Survivors Network - who can support you. Their telephone number is 01273 203380 and their website is I wrote a letter to Dr Christine Blasey-Ford to thank her for her courage. I wrote: “I am writing to you to express my support for you in courageously coming forward... I just wanted to say thank you for doing the right thing.”  There are times when the actions of one person can inspire a generation; I believe her brave actions will.  If you would like to write - the address being given is c/o her university. She is currently unable to live at home because of the level of threats of retribution violence. You can send a message of support to:  Dr Christine Blasey Ford c/o Palo Alto University, 1791 Arastradero Rd, Palo Alto, CA 94304, USA

Best wishes Cllr Emma Daniel  The Hanover Directory is happy to publish views on local issues. This doesn’t mean it either agrees or disagrees with subjects covered. If you live locally and want to express a different viewpoint, please email us at

Hanover resident Francis Field and his colleague Ian Trice have started a music club at Jubilee Library...

Brighton Jubilee Music Club In our libraries we’ve got a very extensive collection of music CDs and books, covering every kind of music from funk, psychedelic rock, jazz, electro, reggae, classical to pop among others. We’ve got keen customers who love taking out both books and music across all genres and also talking about their latest finds and asking about future and exciting items to borrow. The idea for the Music Club at Jubilee Library is to provide something extra for our customers who want to know more about interesting music and have the chance to talk about it. Myself and Ian aim to make the talks relaxed, friendly and inclusive events, there’ll be a speaker first and then people are free to chat with them about the day’s talks. We end the talk with a mystery track from our CD collection to highlight the rare and wonderful music we’ve got. We’ve got a very interesting six months of speakers lined up, kicking off with the host of Brighton Alternative Jazz Festival, Dan Spicer. He’ll be talking about “Jazz and the Art of Protest”; he’s also written a great book on Turkish Psychedelia. Following on from him are talks on “The Gothic in Popular Music” with Ian and “Joys of Running an Indie Record Shop” with Ewan from Rarekind Records. An invitation to a launch event...

Hanover & Elm Grove Communities Forum Launch Saturday December 1st, 2.30pm, Hanover Community Centre Hanover Directory readers may recall that last year a range of community groups and residents came together as an informal community partnership to discuss ways to better work together to address local issues and develop positive actions and resources to help the community. The group – which includes representatives from The Hanover Community Association, Phoenix Estate, Pankhurst Area Community Association, Hanover Action, Hanover & Elm Grove Local Action Team, Friends of William Clarke Park, Phoenix Gallery and the Annunciation Church have been busy and with the help of the council have developed an outline Neighbourhood Action Plan for the area. This picks up many of the issues that residents have spoken out about and now the

draft plan is ready to be brought before the council and many of the local service providers in a bid to align the delivery of local services with community need. A launch event to elect forum members and to share the work of the Coalition to date, including progress of our council-funded innovative Restorative Communities pilot programme, is planned for 1st December at the Hanover Community Centre. With your support, it is anticipated that the plan will be the catalyst for the formally constituted and new Hanover and Elm Grove Communities Forum to spearhead, coordinate and report back to residents the progress of implementing the actions identified within the Neighbourhood Plan. We do hope that you will be able to join us on 1st December and, with it being so close to Christmas, as well as having guests from the council and many other services, we hope to welcome you with some festive cheer, mince pies, mulled wine and a little festive fun. We look forward to seeing you. For more information about the Communities Forum, find us online at

hanover The latest article by Hanover resident Jason Palmer of the Sussex Heart Charity…

Heart Health: Anyone can save a life

As you may know, one year ago I started writing ‘Heart Health’ articles on the basis that, as a Volunteer Director at the Sussex Heart Charity (SHC), I know a ‘little’ bit about the subject. However, I never claim to be an expert (hence the disclaimer!)

The Sussex Heart Charity is your local heart charity and is one of the largest cardiac care charities in the county; ironically it’s also the smallest (it is the only charity dedicated to raising funds in Sussex for the people of Sussex). The first underlying principle of the SHC is to improve the quality of cardiac patients’ lives and that of their families too, whilst also promoting resuscitation within the community. The Sussex Heart Charity is tremendously grateful to all of you who give on a monthly or annual basis, or do something outstanding – raise money via JustGiving, organise events and fundraisers, and attend them too. People like you – thanks! The SHC community commitment is quite simple in so far as support is given to many groups, organisations, institutions and individuals who approach the charity for a grant towards the provision of a ‘community’ Automated External Defibrillator (AED). As part of this package the SHC provides Basic Life Support training courses, which are also scheduled as public courses throughout the year - anyone can save a life; you just need to know how. The SHC some years ago funded defibrillators at two local railway stations and SHC believe this was the first Public Access Defibrillation Programme anywhere in the world. The SHC provided the first AEDs to be installed at any European football ground (the Goldstone) and more recently provided the AMEX football stadium with eight defibrillators – making the Brighton ground the safest in Europe (in relation to surviving a cardiac arrest).

The SHC has recently worked with Southern Rail to provide AEDs at every Sussex railway station and, more recently, supported the regulars of The Cleveland pub who installed an AED on the wall outside. Coming soon, date to be confirmed, The Sussex Heart Charity Pub Quiz @The Dover Castle. Keep happy and healthy
