hanover Welcome to The Hanover Directory

This month we have news of some great events close to Hanover. The Level Communities Forum have started a free monthly roller disco, which sounds very exciting, as well as circus performances and workshops. If you enjoy comedy, there’s a great line-up on 23rd February for the International Women’s Day Extravaganza at the Sallis Benney theatre. Our featured local person is Julie Crocker, who explains how Pilates can help us. Jason Palmer of the Sussex Heart Charity has some tips for keeping your heart healthy. We also have our regular update from Hanover Action, who are keeping up the pressure on politicians to develop a sustainable economy. Have a great February!

Meet a local Pilates instructor...

Hanover Person...Julie Crocker Julie Crocker is a physiotherapist and Pilates instructor at Pilates Plus, and runs beginners’ classes at the Hanover Community Centre. How long have you lived in Brighton?

I have lived in Brighton for one year, moving from rural Scotland, and before that the Netherlands and Spain! How did you become a Pilates instructor?

I was first introduced to Pilates after a car accident left me with very serious injuries and my fantastic physiotherapist introduced me to the method. My consultant at the time told me that my injuries were life limiting and I would have to give up my sports career; however, after a year of rehabilitation which included a lot of Pilates, I ran (limped!) a half marathon and went on to teach fitness classes! This led me to gain my BSc in Physiotherapy and certification in Pilates so that I could bring this to others.

For more information phone Julie on 07984 146003, email juliefiona.pilates@gmail.com or visit Pilates Plus on Facebook. What is Pilates?

Pilates is a system of exercises designed to improve physical strength, flexibility and mental agility. I like to say that it restores the body to its natural state and I have been teaching this for nearly 20 years. The original exercises taught by Joseph Pilates over 100 years ago have mostly been updated and modified with modern physiotherapy knowledge but the understanding of the effectiveness of the system remains!

Gentle, remedial, Physiotherapist-led Pilates for all ages and levels of fitness.

Classes in Hanover and Brighton Marina 6 week courses, walk-ins welcome but booking highly advisable as my classes are small. One 2 One for intensive results.

Please contact Julie Crocker 07984 146003

Is it suitable for anyone?

I would say yes, with the appropriate teacher in the appropriate class. Classes should always be small and closely monitored. With any serious medical condition I would ask for a referral from a medical professional, and would advise initial one-to-one. I have honestly never had a pupil say that the system didn’t work for them. What do you like to do when you’re not working?

I have a dog, so I love hiking and biking - I love to swim (in the sea during summer!) I love eating out at our local restaurants and catching up with my friends in our local pubs. I also invest in ongoing training both as a physio and Pilates instructor which I really enjoy - we are always learning...

A new project from Martlets hospice to support bereaved men...

News from the council...

The Healing Power of Nature

Ranger volunteer scheme

Martlets has begun a unique project to support bereaved men as they tend to a community allotment. Funded by Hospice UK, Earthworks is a weekly space for the men to get together to grow and harvest an abundance of vegetables, flowers and fruit. Led by a hospice counsellor and a volunteer gardener, it’s a welcoming and supportive environment in which to work, whilst enjoying getting outside in the fresh air.

Jane Cato from the hospice’s Bereavement Team said, “It’s all very relaxed; each morning begins with a cuppa in the allotment shed around the wood burner. Previous gardening experience isn’t important; you can take on whichever jobs interest you, whether that’s lighter work in the greenhouse or getting really stuck into the digging and clearing. Simply getting closer to nature can be very therapeutic, regardless of what the weather’s doing!

“It’s a very hands-on way for people to come together and to use their skills and energy to complete practical tasks, whilst gaining the benefit of talking to others who are in a similar situation – if that’s what they want to do. “Less than a quarter of those using our hospice bereavement services are men and there’s nowhere else in Brighton & Hove for bereaved men to get together. So, it makes sense to find an alternative way to support those men, since we know we can help them.”

To find out more about Earthworks, or to sign up, please contact the Martlets’ Patient and Family Support Administrator on 01273 273400, or email bereavement@martlets.org.uk.

If you’ve made a New Year’s Resolution to get fitter, learn new skills and help to protect your local environment, then the CityParks Ranger Volunteers could be right up your street!

They have been carrying out practical conservation projects in parks and nature reserves every Friday since 2011 and are now expanding to work at weekends. No experience is necessary and tools are provided, along with tea and coffee! You just need to be aged 18 or over.

To join the mailing list or for more information, email cityparks.volunteers@ brighton-hove.gov.uk.

There’s a lot going on at The Level...

A great event for gardeners...

Roller Disco and Circus Skills at The Level

Seedy Sunday - 3rd February

The Level Communities Forum, a volunteer group, are organising a free monthly roller disco at The Level for the local community. The roller discos take place between 5pm and 9pm on the last Sunday of every month in the family area of The Level (south of the skate park). The first disco was on 27th January and the next ones will be on 24th February and 31st March. You need to bring your own skates and flashing lights. Music will be supplied; out of respect to neighbours the noise will be kept to a reasonable level. Volunteer skate guards will be on hand for assistance. All ages are welcome and under-16s should be accompanied by an adult. The Forum are also introducing monthly performances at The Level by Brighton artists, including circus performances. At The Level Café (Tomato Dolce & Salato), there will be “Do it for Donuts” - a circus and performing arts open mic for those who have a skill, talent, song, dance or joke to share. All performers get a delicious vegan donut from Glazed Coffee. Contact the Forum if you would like to take part. Each month a different volunteer will host a free informal workshop, sharing their skills. Workshops will be provided by friends of Hoop O’Clock, Preston Park Pyro Parade and Brighton Freestyle Disc.

Seedy Sunday is Britain’s largest community seed swap. This year’s event is on 3rd February at BHASVIC, 205 Dyke Road, BN3 6EG, from 10.30am to 4pm.

Entry costs £3 but is free for children. There will be a seed swap area with a huge variety of seeds. If you don’t have any seeds to swap, you can buy them for 50p per packet. There will also be seed-saving experts offering advice; stalls with a range of produce; fascinating speakers; food and drink; and fun activities for children. For more information, see seedysunday.org.

For more information, visit thelevelbrighton.org.uk, The Level Communities Forum on Facebook, or keep an eye on the noticeboards in the park.

This month’s councillor report is from Emma Daniel, Labour councillor for Hanover & Elm Grove...

Emma Daniel... Reflections on my term as a councillor

This will be my last column to you before the local elections in May 2019. And by the time you read this it will be Valentine’s Day, although I will in true feminist, municipal style be celebrating Galentine’s Day on the 13th February with fantastic women friends. Fans of Parks and Recreation will recognise the Knopism!

Whether a womanly Galentine’s or a romantic Valentine’s, taking time to spread some love this month can’t be a bad thing. The environment politically is likely to be as hostile and uncertain as it is when I am drafting this in mid-January. Defiant love for our neighbours and community is for me a political act. Whether it’s helping someone on the bus, planting flowers for people to enjoy in your front window or a more formal action. Let’s try to keep doing as much of it as we can as a community. Ahead of the election, I thought I would reflect a little on the last four years: First, I have had the best time of my life … this is such a brilliant community full of care and love for one another. (Well, mostly!) If I do case work, you have all been so appreciative and kept me motivated and cheerful. On the other hand, we have had the biggest cuts in living memory to local authority budgets and it has been really draining trying to save services and develop new ones under those conditions. The projects I have worked on have been focused on trying to protect people from the worst harm of the welfare reforms (investing in the Credit Union, discretionary funds, advice services, protecting the funding to refuges for people fleeing violence) and being able with the support of the people of the city to help us play our part in the global refugee crisis. When things have gone wrong, for example the saga

of the parking permits not being printed properly, we have worked together to solve it. You have had patience with me as I try to sort things out. And sometimes when I have tried and not been able to solve something, you have appreciated the effort. It has felt like a joint endeavour where we have worked together. I have learned so much in the role, and from all of you. I have learned that being hated by the Daily Mail isn’t that hard to do. And I have also learned not to worry about it too much! So happy Valentine’s/Galentine’s Hanover and thank you for a great four years. See you on the doorstep. Cllr Emma Daniel

New exhibitions at Phoenix Brighton

There are two new exhibitions now on at Phoenix Brighton art gallery in Waterloo Place - David Bellingham’s Driving School in the main gallery and Edition 1 in the new Window Gallery. Driving School, which is curated by David Shrigley (Brighton Festival Guest Director 2018), features work which offers lessons in unlearning and relearning, undoing and redoing and unmaking and remaking. David Bellingham is an artist of near total obscurity, who scratches a living making and mending. His work is occasionally to be found in the regions but it does not stay long and is hard to spot. He does his best to keep a low profile. You will not have heard of him before and you may never hear of him again. The work takes its chances in the open air, travelling by word of mouth, as recollection and anecdote. Bellingham was born in South London and lives and works in Glasgow. The exhibition is open from 11am to 5pm and ends on 24th February. Edition 1 features small editions of artwork by Phoenix artists in different mediums. Window Gallery is a window into art made by Phoenix artists. It’s a space where Phoenix artists show finished work, explore new ideas, and present work in progress. For more information visit www.phoenixbrighton.org.

This month’s article from Hanover Action…

Radical action is neede The January Hanover Directory reported that Hanover Action petitioned Brighton and Hove City Council to declare a climate emergency and commit to going carbon neutral by 2030. The motion got passed by the city council and we hope real actions will be attached to this through discussion in further council meetings. More and more of us know that this emergency means marshaling all of our energy and resources to turn things around before it’s too late. As Swedish schoolgirl Greta Thunberg said, what is the point in “studying for a future that soon may be no more”? Politicians – with some notable exceptions - are ignoring the information we already have. We don’t need another report to tell us how bad it could be or what the solutions are – we already have most of those answers. We have to move towards renewable energy; we need to reduce, redesign, reuse, recycle - but this will only be effective enough if we do it on a huge scale.

15-year-old Greta Thunberg on strike in Sweden: “We can’t save the world by playing by the rules - the rules have to be changed”

ed

Tinkering has given governments green credentials and proved popular but we need to keep the pressure on so that we move beyond these small schemes (charging for plastic bags, increasing recycling rates only for it to be burned) and develop a truly sustainable economy. We need radical action nationally and internationally: taxing polluters, massive investment and support for green energy and sustainable industry and making public transport affordable. It is achievable

if we change the rules. This will only happen if enough people take part AND pressurise politicians. So - join Hanover Action and get involved. Join Extinction Rebellion, a growing international movement, active in Brighton, of people rising up and taking the issue into our own hands. Do whatever you can - find out - speak out - act out.

Heart Charity...

Men are more prone to heart disease and women are more likely to suffer stress - having a heart attack can be the first sign anything is wrong – so a visit to your GP at least once a year is important, ensuring you (and the GP) monitor blood pressure and cholesterol levels. Be aware of personal stress - understand feelings of anxiety/ nervousness, tiredness and worry, be more in tune with yourself, your body. Be more active, or simply try yoga/ meditation - focus your mind and physical being which will benefit from an increase in heart rate if you add 20 to 30 minutes of moderate exercise/movement three to five times a week! So far as diet is concerned, we can all benefit from change here: steak and chips - to salmon and green beans (with a mixed leaf salad on the side); drink fewer carbonated drinks - change to plain old water from the tap, or fresh fruit juice (avoid - fruit ‘flavoured’) - orange, apple or cranberry, topped up with a little sparkling water. Food is tastier when steamed, grilled or poached, preserving the flavour and essential vitamin/mineral content; add vegetables, mix it up - make it colourful. I add salt to chips – who doesn’t? Salt makes food taste better, but herbs, spices and lemon juice make for a good substitute.

Have a weekly weigh-in and know your happy weight, the weight you like to be (most of the time), give or take a pound or two. If you notice your weight creeping up then have a day or two of exercise; include portion-controlled regular meals, with no food treats - eat more fruit and drink lots of water. It’s not romantic, but this year – say it with a doctor’s appointment. Keep happy and healthy Jason x

Wear a hat to raise money for Off The Fence...

Woolly Hat Day 2019

Help the homeless on Friday 15th February by taking part in Woolly Hat Day 2019!

The number of people sleeping rough or in precarious living situations around Brighton & Hove is still too high. Twelve men and three women died on the streets of Brighton in 2018. We believe our services are needed more now than ever. Our homeless project need your help to support the vital work they do throughout the year: fighting against homelessness and supporting individuals through the process of being housed, overcoming addiction and entering work. All you need to do, on 15th February, is: • Wear a hat

• Donate by texting WOOL19 followed by £1 (or more), to 70070. • Tell your friends! This is a fantastic fundraising event to get your work, club or school helping the homeless. Don’t forget to Instagram, Facebook and Tweet your Woolly Hat Day photos using our hashtag- #OTFwoollyhatday.
