Ashton Street, photographed in April 1956. This street ran from Albion Hill south to Richmond Street and was swept away in the general clearance of December 1958. It was a typical mid-Victorian working class street, similar to many others in the area. The view is looking south from the Albion Hill end to Richmond Street School in the distance. hanover hanover A fabulous Hanover festive event...

Be part of Hanover’s Advent calendar

’Tis the season when the streets around Hanover get bolder, brighter and sparkle with seasonal cheer. Why not join in and let your front window shine with Christmas and community spirit. This year’s Advent calendar boasts 43 streets around Hanover, Elm Grove and Queen’s Park. If your street’s on the map, you’re invited to bling up your windows on your day in December.

Co-ordinating the Advent calendar has been something of a team effort. Gareth Dee allocated a date to each participating street. He shared his list with Hanover’s favourite artist Lisa Holdcroft, who created our fabulous Advent calendar map. Meanwhile, Moyra Scott has kept street reps informed

of their tasks, while Cllr Elaine Hills has been on media liaison duties. Fr Anthony Murley is coordinating this year’s charity collection, for the Clock Tower Sanctuary. You can donate through your street rep or by giving to: www.justgiving.com/team/ hanoveradventcalendar2019.

For daily updates, join the Hanover Advent Calendar 2019 Facebook group. And if you, like us, are in love with Lisa’s map, you can pick up her Brighton Cartoon Calendar 2020 from her website: www.lisaholdcroft.com.

hanover hanover News from the council...

New bins to help seafront recycling More than 100 new bins have been installed along the busy seafront in the hope more people will recycle plastic bottles, cans and glass. The waste containers are part of 300 special ‘Heritage’ bins that are being put in place along the 13 kilometres (8 mile) stretch from Saltdean to Hove Lagoon. The bins have three separate sections in different colours to help people recycle more easily, with two that reflect the city’s seafront heritage Brighton Borough blue for plastic bottles and cans and Hove Borough maroon for glass. The third section will be black for ordinary rubbish.

Cllr Anne Pissaridou, chair of the council’s Environment, Transport and Sustainability committee, said: “The council quite rightly received complaints about there being no recycling bins along the promenade, so we’ve listened to people and installed these bins to address that situation. There is now no reason for anyone to leave their plastic bottles, empty cans, glass or rubbish on the beach or next to a bin that may be full. If people find a bin that is full, there will

be another very close by they will be able to use.”

Although the new bins can take plastic bottles, empty cans, glass or rubbish, they should not be used for barbecue materials as these can create a fire hazard. There are though special barbecue bins along the seafront near the sections of the beach where barbecuing is allowed. The different sections of the bin will not have plastic bin liners inside, which will reduce the council’s plastics use and costs, and will be emptied straight into the small dust cart. hanover hanover Meet a local resident producing a show this Christmas...

Hanover Person... Craig Johnson

Producer and actor Craig Johnson lives off Islingword Road. His company, Blind Piper Productions, produces the annual “Ghost Stories for Christmas” show, this year at the Lantern Theatre in Rock Place, in aid of The Clock Tower Sanctuary. How long have you lived in Hanover?

I moved to Brighton 20 years ago and lived on the seafront for the first two years, then moved to Hanover, so 18 years now. What do you most like about the area?

It’s a lot quieter than when I lived on the seafront! But it’s central enough to be able to walk everywhere if I want. Tell us more about Ghost Stories for Christmas... It’s storytelling meets theatre – we perform three different ghost stories in aid of local charities, and are

about to produce our seventh show. It’s inspired partly by the BBC TV Christmas Ghost Stories that were televised during the 1970s and partly by the tradition for telling ghostly tales at this time of year.

We tend to tell modern stories and over the years have performed tales by Stephen King, Ramsey Campbell, Clive Barker, Agatha Christie and many others. So people come along, drink mulled wine (there’s a glass included in the ticket price) and listen to ghost stories - some of the stories are scary, some are sad and some are funny but they all deal with the supernatural. Over the years we have raised just under £5000 for local charities, including RISE, Allsorts Youth Project and The Sussex Cancer Fund. What have you got planned for this year’s production?

We are really happy that this year Neil Gaiman has given permission for us to perform one of his stories, and we are also telling stories by Ramsey Campbell and John Paul Fitch. It’s a “dark selection box” – featuring messages from beyond the grave, mysterious wedding gifts and a man who hates Christmas. The show is in aid of The Clocktower Sanctuary, which provides help and support for homeless and insecurely housed young people in Brighton and Hove. What do you like to do to relax?

I read a lot but also go to the gym and watch a lot of Netflix. Ghost Stories for Christmas is at The Lantern Theatre, Rock Place, from 18th to 21st December. Tickets cost £10 and are available from ghoststoriesforchristmas.com or from the box office. Show contains some strong language and descriptions of horror.

hanover News from Volunteering Matters...

Come and Join Us...

Are you over 50 and looking to get involved with a new activity in your area? Do you want to meet people, get fit, learn a new skill or give back to the community as a volunteer? If so, Volunteering Matters - Lifelines is the place for you. Volunteering Matters supports volunteer-led activities for older people in Brighton and Hove.

Our volunteers lead activities, such as Bridge, Seated Pilates, Gentle Exercise, Tai Chi, Crossword Club, Movie Night, Knitting, Art and Reminiscence, which increase social engagement and reduce isolation Our members tend to be older people in their 70s and 80s, many of whom are socially isolated, and these activities, which take place in local sheltered accommodation, provide them with friendship, social connection and a sense of purpose We are actively seeking new volunteers at the moment so if you are aged 50+ and have a few hours to spare each week we are looking for

volunteers to support a variety of activities including producing our monthly Volunteer Newsletter. Our volunteers enjoy giving back to the community…

“I really do enjoy volunteering, meeting people, making people happy. It’s an honour and privilege to be an official volunteer.” “I love working with people in my group sharing life stories, chatting and socialising as we watch films together.” For more info please call 01273 688117 or email lifelines@volunteeringmatters.org.uk

Don’t forget to vote in the General Election...

Election Candidates

These are the candidates in the Brighton Pavilion constituency for the General Election on Thursday 12th December: Bob Dobbs (Independent)

Nigel Furness (UK Independence Party) Emma Hogan (Conservative Party) Adam Imanpour (Labour Party) Caroline Lucas (Green Party) Richard Milton (Brexit Party)

Permission for Electronic Billboard Refused

In last month’s issue we heard from a Hanover resident who was concerned about a planning application from an advertising company to install an illuminated billboard to replace the current unlit poster billboard at 185 Elm Grove. 43 letters of objection, as well as two petitions signed by a total of 186 people, were submitted to the council by residents worried about the effect of such a large bright light in a quietly lit neighbourhood.

Objections were also submitted by all three Hanover & Elm Grove ward councillors. There was just one letter of support. These are the candidates for Brighton Kemptown: Graham Cushway (Brexit Party) Joe Miller (Conservative)

Alexandra Phillips (Green Party) Lloyd Russell-Moyle (Labour)

Ben Thomas (Liberal Democrats)

Brighton & Hove City Council has now refused permission for the illuminated sign. The council’s notice of refusal said: “The proposed illuminated billboard, by reason of its large scale, modern appearance and highly visible location, in conjunction with the context within a historically established, primarily residential setting, would result in an incongruous feature that would cause substantial damage to the visual amenity of the local area contrary to policy QD12 of the Brighton and Hove Local Plan.”

hanover Our regular article from Hanover Action...

Climate crisis is beyond politics...

11,000 scientists from across the world have signed up to a statement that “the world’s people face untold suffering due to the climate crisis”. A proportionate response entails major transformation in the ways our global society functions and interacts with natural eco systems.

Hanover Action has welcomed and joined Extinction Rebellion in its first year of rebellious action to raise the issue of the climate crisis. In the lead-up to the election 54% of people say the climate crisis will affect how they vote. (Why not 100% when the climate crisis is the biggest issue humankind is facing?)

Extinction Rebellion does not support particular political parties but asks all of us to ask our representatives “Where’s your plan for the climate crisis?”

Act Now and

3. Set up an independent Citizens’ Assembly of randomly selected citizens to learn, debate and define what actions need to be taken because we are facing a crisis that is Beyond Politics.

Just one concert this month at St Luke’s Church…

Music and Wine at St Luke’s On Friday December 6th we are celebrating the 70th birthday of regular composers who we feature in our series, Barry Mills and John Hawkins. Local violinist Ellie Blackshaw and pianist and composer Michiko Shimanuki pair up and dedicate a celebratory concert to our much loved local (and international) septuagenarian composers Barry Mills and John Hawkins. The programme includes Mozart’s sonata in G - K301, a Debussy sonata, Rachmaninov and Shimanuki, and the atmospheric ‘Flos Ferri’ for solo violin by Michiko alongside Mills and Hawkins. Free cake will be provided. We will then have a break until our next concert which is on January 24th, 2020. Music & Wine at St Luke’s would like to take this chance to wish you all a great Christmas and Happy New Year.

The concert takes place at St Luke’s Church, Queen’s Park Road, Brighton BN2 9ZB, and starts at 7.30pm.

This month’s column from the local WI...

News from the council...

New Electric Vehicle Charging Points More than 200 new electric vehicle charging points are set to be installed across the city over the next few months. Following a tender process, the council has appointed Electric Blue to install and maintain the electric vehicle charge points. The project is being funded with £300,000 from the Office of Low Emissions, and £100,000 from Electric Blue.

The 207 new points will include 30 in areas with high parking demand where the council are proposing mandatory Electric Charging spaces, many of them in response to requests from residents who own or are thinking of buying electric vehicles but have no off-street parking available. Lamp post chargers: Most of the charging points will be installed on lamp posts and will provide a full charge for vehicles parked overnight. These will be installed by January next year. A mobile phone app showing the locations of all points in the city and whether they are in use will be available to

download. Drivers will pay 28p per kilowatt hour to charge their vehicles at the public points.

Fast chargers: Fast chargers, taking around five hours, which are already installed in the city centre, will be integrated into the new app. The council will consider installing further fast chargers outside the city centre if there is a clear demand from residents. All the public charge points will be powered by renewable energy. The council has also been awarded £86,265 research funding from Innovate UK for a trial of smart network extenders, which increase the number of vehicles which can be charged at each point.

Councillor Details The Green Party councillors for Hanover & Elm Grove, David Gibson, Elaine Hills and Steph Powell, hold an advice surgery every second Saturday in the month, from 10.15 to 11.15am at Elm Grove School. You can also email them at:

An annual event to usher in the coming year... Photo by Simon Dack

Burning the Clocks Burning the Clocks is back on Saturday 21st December at 6.30pm.

Held on the shortest day of the year, Burning the Clocks sees around 2,000 local residents parading the paper and willow lanterns they’ve made through the city, before passing them into a huge bonfire on the beach. The lanterns are filled symbolically with their hopes and dreams. The coming year is then ushered in with a dazzling fire show. The parade begins at 6.30pm and the fire show begins on the beach by Madeira Drive at approximately 7.15pm.

Burning the Clocks was created by Same Sky in 1994 as a way for the whole community to enjoy the festive season, regardless of faith or creed. Burning the Clocks has a unique theme every year and this year it is a reflective one, in response to the current challenges of global warming, community cohesion and migration. The title is taken from Marcel Proust’s masterpiece “A la recherche du temps perdu”. The

– Stephen P, Carer

This book fulfils my needs. Firstly, it is authoritative, written by someone who has had many years of close contact with people living with dementia. Every person living with dementia will not exhibit exactly the same symptoms or in the same order as another person living with the disease. Secondly, it is written in a language more suitable to the lay person – labels or expressions which have specific meanings to the medical profession are not used, or if they have to be, are fully explained. Thirdly, the book is divided into self-contained chapters dealing with separate subjects, which may have relevance at a specific time. I can thoroughly recommend it.

News from the council...

A few ideas for being more eco-friendly...

New seafront food hall...

Planet-Friendly Tips

An exciting new eating experience awaits residents and visitors to Brighton & Hove’s seafront next summer.

Use bicarbonate of soda to clean loos, or if really bad the remains of a bottle of coke.

The historic Shelter Hall, which has been completely rebuilt and is due to be completed early next year, will be home to the city’s first food hall. Businesses were invited to submit food and drink proposals earlier this summer. The new food hall will be run by Sessions Market and will include up to ten independent Brighton & Hove based operators including restaurants, top street food vendors and up-and-coming chefs from the city, seeking an opportunity to start a food business.

All vendors will be encouraged to source ingredients from Sussex producers. There will be seating for over 250 diners. There will also be two bars on the upper and lower levels, run by the Sessions team and serving locally brewed beer. The Rotunda, on the street level, will be the new beach location for Riddle & Finns, the champagne and oyster bar which has been a prominent name in the city for nearly 14 years.

The Shelter Hall project is part of the council’s Seafront Investment Programme. The scheme also includes public toilets located on the lower promenade, with a new walkway and sea wall. The busy West Street junction is also being remodelled to help people and traffic flow more smoothly.

Nettie Heron-Middleton has sent us these environmentally-friendly tips. Please email us at info@hanoverdirectory.co.uk if you have your own tips you’d like to share.

Use vegetable peelings to make stock for soups. Put left-overs in the fridge in a bowl with a plate on top instead of using foil or cling film. Put empty containers or polystyrene packing in the freezer when it’s not completely full, so it uses less energy. Use old sheets, duvets or T-shirts that aren’t good enough for the charity shop to make cleaning cloths, rather than using wet wipes that don’t biodegrade.
