hanover Happy Christmas to everyone in Hanover!

It’s hard to believe it’s December already, but Christmas is fast approaching.

We have details of some Christmas events to help you get into the festive spirit, including the very popular Hanover Street Advent Calendar, now in its third year; a family carol concert in aid of Amaze at the Hanover Community Centre; and “Ghost Stories for Christmas”, which is produced by Hanover resident Craig Johnson at the Lantern Theatre in Rock Place. There’s also news from Brighton Lions of Project Wenceslas, where people who don’t need their Winter Fuel Payments can donate them to help people in fuel poverty. We wish you all a peaceful and happy festive period! A countdown to Christmas...

Hanover’s Living Advent Calendar...

Hanover Advent Street Calendar 2018 (part 1)

Hanover_christmas_map_2018.pdf

This December, more than 40 streets are creating a massive Advent calendar in Hanover and Elm Grove – and you can be part of it. From 1-23 December, different streets will be invited to bling up their front windows, in whatever seasonal style takes their fancy.

T he Hanov er Christmas St

Hampden Road resident Gareth Dee carried out the task of allocating dates to each street, which Andrew Short, of local graphic design agency One Stop Creative Shop (www.1stopcreativeshop.co.uk), used to create the map. Each street has at least one co-ordinator. Now in its third year, the Advent calendar is a chance for residents to show off their decorating flair and Yuletide spirit. Why not help us make Hanover’s windows sparkle with seasonal cheer. Hanover_christmas_map_2018.pdf

Meet a local dance teacher...

Hanover Person... Kate Adams Kate Adams lives in Lincoln Street. She runs Magic Moves and BollyMoves dance classes.

How long have you lived in Hanover? Nineteen years.

What do you like about the area? The people - the community.

How did you come to be a dance teacher?

I took a BA in Contemporary Dance and Choreography at London Contemporary Dance School. Two years later, I moved to Brighton, started teaching contemporary dance and dancing with a West African Drum and Dance group. I joined the newly formed samba group, Carnival Collective, and became their Dance Director, teaching and choreographing samba/carnival dances. If you were living in Brighton in 1999, you may have taken part in, or seen, Carnival Collective’s “Beating Time”. Five parades, starting in different areas of Brighton (including Hanover and Queen’s Park) converged on the seafront for an epic drum and dance performance. Dressed in purple satin stretched over my 7½ months pregnant stomach and afraid of being crushed, I directed the dance from the pavement above. Eighteen months later, with that child in tow, I set up Magic Moves creative dance for children. Magic Moves is now in its 18th year. Tell us more about your classes...

MAGIC MOVES: With the help of a variety of props, music, stories and lots of imagination, children are encouraged to express themselves freely through movement. Older children learn dance technique

and choreographic skills to create their own dances and often take part in local community dance performances. I teach five classes in Hanover and run a session every Monday at Happy Days Nursery. You may have seen me trudging up and down the hill with my trolley – I am not an obsessive shopper – this is my bag of props. BOLLYMOVES: These are Bollywood style dance classes for adults (and sometimes kids). A few years ago, I qualified to teach Bollywood dance and I love it! It’s very accessible - great for all ages and levels. The music is infectious, and the dance can be both precise and random, referencing both traditional and popular modern Indian dance styles. Allow your inner Bollywood film star to shine! What’s happening this month?

Both Bollymoves and Magic Moves are excited to be performing in Brighton & Hove Dance Active at the Brighton Centre on December 8th. Make & Move Holiday Workshops Friday 21st December and Wednesday 2nd 10:00-12:00. Christmassy and wintery themes.

This article is by Tanushka Marah of Windmill Young Actors…

Folk Tales...

Most of the folk tales we have been read or read to our children have been passed down generations through oral tradition. We now have thousands of stories to choose from for our children, many of which can reappear in different forms and from different countries. Reading many new stories to my two daughters over the years, I’ve been surprised by how sanitised and neutralised many stories are becoming. I remember how the thrill of adventure and the intensity of the darkness from stories of old enthralled me and gave me a love of literature, as well as an insight into the depth of humanity. I always feel that the original sad ending to The Little Mermaid sparked my creativity at the age of seven. Bruno Bettelheim, the Austrian-born American author of The Uses of Enchantment, argued how important folk and fairy tales are for children’s development. Folk tales deal in archetypes and these are great for children to find themselves and project themselves into. Also the extremities of light and dark actually give children a space to understand and locate their own feelings of darkness and their fears. He argued that psychologically instructive tales devoid of symbolism could have damaging effects on children as they can take the story literally. A clear message like ‘try harder and you will achieve’ can leave a child frustrated and angry when trying doesn’t achieve results, whereas a princess trapped in a tower is a potent symbol that both girls and boys can relate to. Making this show at Windmill Young Actors with older teenagers, I realise how these stories still inspire and excite them as they do me too! Come and join us at The Old Market theatre to start the Christmas season with a warming, exciting family treat. Meet Baba Yaga, the little beggar, some crazy birds, a princess, a guinea fowl, a flirty fish and many

more in this balloon trip around the globe. Florence escapes the pressures of her family and travels by balloon to the Far East, the Middle East, Europe, Eastern Europe and Africa collecting stories as they used to be told. Recommended for children age 6-106 “Everywhere”, The Old Market Theatre, December 11th 01273 201 801 www.theoldmarket.com

If you know an aspiring actor, Windmill Young Actors runs weekly classes and rehearsals most days of the week, for 5-21 year olds. Everyone welcome. For more information please get in touch: www.windmillyoungactors.com 07932 776 113

Check it out now! Pup-Snail Brother!

The Hanover Centre garden had an unexpected guest in the form of Norman Cook aka Fatboy Slim recently. Norman visited all the Snailspace snail sculptures in one day to raise money for Martlets Hospice. He took a detour to say hello to Hanover’s Snowdog Process Pup, painted by Josh Ford for last year’s charity art trail. www.snailspacebrighton.co.uk

This month’s councillor report is from David Gibson, Green councillor for Hanover & Elm Grove...

Councillor News...David Gibson New Communities Forum to launch on 1st Dec, 2pm, at Hanover Community Centre I have been working with local groups towards a launch of a forum that brings groups and individuals together to improve our area. The forum will monitor an action plan for improvements and be able to bid for projects to improve our area with money from the incoming Community Infrastructure Levy. All are welcome. Housing milestones First Living Rents: At September’s housing committee, my amendment to achieve the first truly affordable new council house (at a Living Rent) was supported by the other parties. Hopefully this will lead to more truly affordable rents on new council houses. Good landlord first letting: After spending what feels like an age of planning and development I’m pleased that the good landlord scheme, where landlords voluntarily charge lower rents in the private rented sector, is up and running. The first tenancy was agreed this week, several landlords have signed

up, and it is hoped the momentum will pick up over the coming months. For info see www.goodlandlordsbrightonhove.org Hanover community petition on recycling forces action

A community petition of over 3,000 signatures started by Hanover residents Tea and Ali, calling for more and wider recycling from the council, was debated in October. I seconded a proposal calling for costed proposals for food waste collection, wider plastics collection and more frequent recycling collections (which have been proven to increase recycling elsewhere in the country). Sadly neither of the other parties supported more frequent recycling collections but thankfully, though Labour opposed costing food waste and wider plastic collection, the Tories supported this and the proposal was agreed. Climate change doom

With the recent IPCC report calling for urgent action, I have been pleased to support the “extinction rebellion” efforts to wake up the politicians and call for carbon neutrality by 2025.

hanover There are two concerts at St Luke’s Church this month…

Music and Wine at St Luke’s... We are hosting two concerts this month, both on the same weekend. On Friday 7th December we welcome string players from the inspiring Ensemble Reza with pianist Nancy Cooley. They will perform two masterpieces of French chamber music: Fauré’s romantic first piano quartet, with its melting, exquisite harmonies and abundant lyricism, and Ravel’s exquisite piano trio, alongside a movement from a Mahler piano quartet. The following evening on Saturday 8th December we will hear the award-winning Brighton Youth Orchestra String Ensemble with outstanding young pianist Berniya Hamie playing music by Chopin, and from Baroque Britain to 20th century Greece. This will be a special concert, the proceeds of which will help young people, who could not otherwise afford it, to get into music or help them progress. Music & Wine at St Luke’s would like to take this opportunity to wish you all a very happy Christmas and New Year.

Because every life is unique …we are here to help you make your farewell as personal and individual as possible, and to support you in every way we can.

The concerts take place at St Luke’s Church, Queen’s Park Road, BN2 9ZB, and start at 7.30pm. Tickets £7 / £5 unwaged and low waged / under-16s free. Disabled access. Wine and refreshments served. A Christmas show produced by Hanover resident Craig Johnson...

Ghost Stories for Christmas

Now in its sixth year, Brighton’s original Ghost Stories for Christmas returns to the Lantern Theatre for an evening of macabre and chilling tales. Created in 2013 by Blind Piper Productions, the Ghost Stories for Christmas project has established itself as a regular feature of the Brighton Christmas season whilst raising funds and awareness for local charities. Although originally focusing on classic ghost stories, in recent years the producers have gained permission from Stephen King, Ramsey Campbell and Agatha Christie Ltd to include their stories in the show. This year “Ghost Stories for Christmas – Now We are Six” features stories by the legendary Joan Aiken and British masters of horror Clive Barker and Ramsey Campbell, and promises a journey through the darker sides of childhood, with tales of New Orleans spirits, vengeance from beyond the grave and something rather nasty lurking in the chimney.

Hanover resident Craig Johnson, producer of “Ghost Stories for Christmas – Now We are Six”, said: “Over the last five years we have raised more than £3,000 for a wide range of charities including The Clock Tower Sanctuary, RISE, FareShare Sussex, Allsorts Youth Project and The Sussex Cancer Fund. But this year we have chosen Alzheimer’s Society because I have personal experience of the impact that Alzheimer’s and dementia have, not just on those living with dementia but also those close to them, and it seemed like an opportune time to draw attention to the cause.” Alzheimer’s Society community fundraiser Amber Woodward, who covers the Brighton and Hove area, welcomed the group’s efforts and said: “It’s great that Craig and the team have given their time and energy to support Alzheimer’s Society. Dementia can

hanover This article is by Nick, a volunteer for the Impetus Neighbourhood Care Scheme...

Ready to Share your Neighbourly Goodwill? Today I picked up Terry from his home, as I do once a week. We collected his prescription from the pharmacy and then drove to a café in Kemptown and enjoyed a pot of exquisite Chinese tea and sumptuous cake. We talked about his Pilates class, his time living in Thailand, his life as a designer, about cataloguing his photographs, documenting his personal history. He is 81 with poor health and sight, the result of a stroke, and with some mobility issues. The combined effect of these conditions has resulted in him being confined to his flat for long periods. Due to his sight he is unable to watch TV or read and his days can be long and boring which causes him to feel depressed. When I signed up as a volunteer for Impetus Neighbourhood Care Scheme, it was because I believed I could help make someone’s life a little better. Giving a couple of hours every few weeks to provide some companionship for a lonely, isolated individual seemed an inconsequential use of my spare time to

me and was a way of doing something for the local community. I had expected to bring some small solace into the life of the person I was assigned to visit. I had not expected to make a difference to someone’s life, neither had I expected to find a friend; “You are the highlight of my week”, “I always look forward to our outings”, “I forget about my problems when I am with you”, “You inspire me to do more” are some of the comments Terry has made about the difference our meetings have made to his life. I have been visiting Terry for over a year now and we meet once a week, rain or shine, to get him out of his home and find somewhere to have tea where he can share, with wit, energy and passion, stories of his fascinating life. As Terry’s senses diminish and his world gets smaller it is a privilege to be able to bring some joy and happiness into his life and I value the opportunity volunteering with Impetus has given me to know and be friends with this charming and interesting man. News from the Sussex Community NHS Foundation Trust...

Health hub plan for Brighton General Hospital site Plans for a brand new, purpose-built community health hub on the site of Brighton General Hospital have moved a step closer following approval by local NHS leaders. The Sussex Community NHS Foundation Trust (SCFT) Board has agreed to move forward with plans to create a new health hub which would be constructed fronting Elm Grove, with much of the rest of the site released for local housing. Under the plan all of the Trust’s clinical and back office teams currently based at the site will be at the hub, unless patients or the services provided by SCFT would benefit from a future move. It could also see primary care and pharmacy services brought in.

Siobhan Melia, Chief Executive of SCFT, said: “This ambitious plan is a once in a lifetime opportunity to ensure that the local NHS and community services in Brighton General Hospital particular can meet the changing needs of local people. I want to thank the many patients, staff, local residents and community groups hundreds of patients, staff and members of the to gather views and to help ensure that its plans public that have been in touch with us to help reflected local need. shape this project.” SCFT will now start detailed design work, with its plans still subject to the approval of clinical commissioners, the NHS regulator NHS Improvement, and Brighton and Hove City Council.

The Trust, which provides NHS services in homes, schools, clinics and hospitals across Sussex, had previously set out five options for the development of the East Brighton site. SCFT engaged with

Brighton General Hospital was built in the 1860s as a Victorian workhouse, becoming an NHS hospital in 1948. Its wards fell below required standards and in 2009 the last inpatient beds were removed. The redevelopment of the Brighton General site, only half of which is currently being used by the NHS, is essential to help fund the creation of a modern, purpose-built health and care facility.

Christmas Studio Sale...

It’s that time of year, nights drawing in, days getting colder and, dare I say it, Christmas over the horizon. Amongst all the various Christmas activities on offer, here’s one you might want to put in your diary. One of our local artists is having her annual Studio Sale. You’ve probably seen Janet’s distinctive linocuts and screenprints around Brighton….she’s a regular exhibitor in Artists Open Houses and several of her designs have even graced our front cover. She has a way of capturing that special quality of this neighbourhood and beyond, without resorting to cliché. As she’s done in the past, she has decided to open her home and studio for a pre-Christmas sale when everything will be on offer at a reduced price. It’s a chance to view her prints in situ and to see her working studio whilst enjoying a mince pie and a glass of mulled wine. And you never know you might even pick up a bargain while you’re at it.

Project Wenceslas Brighton Lions Club is launching Project Wenceslas, a campaign to help combat fuel poverty in Brighton and Hove. People who receive the annual Winter Fuel Payment and feel they do not need it are invited to donate the amount to Brighton Lions, who can assure that every penny will go towards alleviating fuel poverty. Fuel poverty has increased mainly due to rising energy prices and more people die from cold housing than die on the roads each year. Donations can be made through Brighton Lions Club’s website at www.brightonlions.org.uk or cheques payable to Brighton Lions Club should be sent to the club at Lions Dene, The Deneway, Brighton, BN1 5AZ. People sending cheques are asked to confirm that their donations may be treated as Gift Aid so that the value of the donation can be increased by 25%.
