QUIZ QUESTION ONE:

Who invented the barometer?

fiveways Meet the Chair of Brighton Orpheus Choir...

LOCAL PERSON – ROBERT EASTWOOD Robert Eastwood lives in Harrington Road and is Chair of Brighton Orpheus Choir, who have an Open Rehearsal on 20th September. How long have you lived in this area? Since 1973. Where do you go to relax? I play tennis at the Preston LTC and cricket in the summer at Horsdean with Brighton and Hove Crescent CC. The highlight of my week, though, is my Orpheus Choir rehearsal at Varndean School on Wednesday evenings. However I might feel before the rehearsal, I always come out feeling terrific, sometimes singing to myself as I walk down Balfour Road. Perhaps singing produces a rush of endorphins! How long have you been singing with Brighton Orpheus Choir? Five years or so. Tell us more about the choir… We have about 90 members of all ages and backgrounds.

In Autumn and Spring we prepare major choral works that we then perform with professional soloists and full orchestra, at Christmas and Easter respectively. Being right in the middle of one of those concerts is very exciting. I shall never forget the thrill of singing Dvorak’s Requiem in March this year in All Saints Church in Hove. Our Summer concert has a varied programme of songs, ranging from early madrigals to 20th century blues. How much musical background do new members need to have? Not much, really. I had done very little singing (almost none when sober!) since my schooldays when I joined, but I have learned so much from our Musical Director and also from a very experienced tenor whom I stood next to for my first few years. And I am still learning. Most people, whatever they might fear, can sing perfectly well in tune. The advantage of joining a big choir is that you won’t be very conspicuous if you are struggling a bit to begin with. It does help to be able to read music, at least to some extent, but this is something that most people find it quite easy to pick up as they go along.* There are also some clever online audio files that make it possible to do almost everything by ear, for those who prefer doing things that way. The next Brighton Orpheus Choir Open Rehearsal is from 7.30pm-9.30pm on Wednesday 20th September at Varndean School (main hall) in Balfour Road. To find out more, visit www.brightonorpheus.org. *There are some very helpful workbooks, aimed mostly at children, which take things from scratch; see: https://www.amazon.co.uk/d/Books/Music-TheoryPractice-Grade-ABRSM/1860969429

NEW BRIGHTON BIKE SHARE SCHEME SET TO LAUNCH Set to launch in early September, BTN BikeShare in association with Life Natural Spring Water will offer 450 smart bicycles with built-in GPS and wireless capabilities. Users will be able to easily locate and rent “Life Bikes” locked in any location across the city via an app, or online. Dropping off is equally simple - riders can return bikes to any docking station or lock them up at any legal location around the city. BTNBikeShare is a UK first - a smart bike system that combines the London docking station and the new Chinese dock-less systems.  The scheme will offer a range of tariffs to suit both regular and occasional users. Occasional hire costs will start from £1.80 for trips of up to an hour. After 7 this costs go up by 3p per minute. Or riders can purchase an annual membership at £72 (£6 per month), which includes one hour free use every day. Brighton & Hove City Council has awarded a three year contract to run the city’s new bike share scheme to UK owned operator Hourbike.  Hourbike, who operate sharing schemes in other cities including Liverpool, Oxford and Reading, was selected as the preferred bidder after a tender process which attracted a total of four proposals.  The company will be responsible for managing and maintaining the service, as well as supplying the bikes and associated equipment.   For further information, visit www.btnbikeshare.com.

fiveways Our regular fitness column from Marianne Clark…

THE PERILS OF RUNNING IN A HOSTILE ENVIRONMENT It has been a testing few weeks as far as my training is concerned; virtually every outing has been thwarted. Usually I don’t let much stop me, as those who train with me will testify. This month, however, has been different; I have encountered all sorts of extraordinary obstacles I’ve never had to consider before. I should explain. I have been travelling in Sri Lanka with my family, and, whilst it is a truly fantastic place to visit, with so much more to see than you can possibly fit into three short weeks, it is not an easy place to get an endorphin fix. 15

This, of course, is very much a luxury problem, and not one that troubles the average Sri Lankan, particularly the many for whom the daily grind of hard manual work isn’t a choice. I also understand that for most people a holiday is a time to relax and put your feet up. But not me. I need to move - and it’s my job to stay fit. The first difficulty was the attention. People, especially women, simply don’t run in Sri Lanka, so every outing drew a crowd of incredulous locals. People pointed and stared. It was distinctly uncomfortable.

The heat was fierce and the energy-sapping humidity was equally debilitating. Add to that the intimidating domestic wildlife - I was accompanied by a troupe of screeching monkeys on one outing, and by an intimidating pack of dogs on another, both of which reduced me to a nervous homewards shuffle. The rivers and lakes were bursting with all sorts of fascinating but predatory wildlife from leeches to crocodiles - definitely no swimming there! Road running wasn’t an option: the pollution is choking, and the drivers are terrifyingly reckless. Once we reached the east coast, the balmy and beautiful Indian Ocean beckoned, but it wasn’t long before I discovered the jelly fish. With a much nastier sting than anything I have run (swum) into in Brighton, they certainly added a frisson of danger, turning each swim into a watery game of chicken. I persevered but it didn’t end well. I was stung. It hurt. Eventually I threw in the towel and conceded defeat. Marianne Marianne Clark is a personal trainer, GB age group triathlete, and running & endurance sports coach and offers personal training, run groups and 1-2-1 run / swim / triathlon coaching for all levels from beginners up. fiveways News from Martlets Hospice...

PEDAL IN PRESTON PARK FOR CHARITY Hop on your bike for a family friendly sponsored bike ride in aid of Martlets Hospice and the Motor Neurone Disease Association at Preston Park on the afternoon of Saturday 14th October. The ride will be taking place safely away from roads on Britain’s oldest velodrome in Preston Park. It’s an ideal cycling challenge for the whole family to enjoy since the laps are just 600 metres long and are perfect for even the littlest of legs to try. Antonia Shepherd from the Martlets’ Fundraising team said, “This is a lovely afternoon for all the family: Mum, Dad, kids, teenies, aunties, uncles and grandparents. There’s plenty of time so you can all cycle at your own pace. Everyone’s welcome and 19 it would be great to see some wheelchair users too. We’ll even have bike mechanics on hand to sort out any punctures. We are quite firm though that all cyclists must be wearing helmets; without one I’m afraid you won’t be able to take part. “Registration for over 16s is £10 and for under 16s it’s just £5. We’d love you to raise as much sponsorFor further information and to register please contact ship as possible ahead of the ride, but if you want to just turn up on the day and make a donation then that 01273 747555 or email events@martlets.org.uk. www.themartlets.org.uk would be great too!”

Because every life is unique ...we are here to help you make your farewell as personal and individual as possible, and to support you in every way we can.

fiveways Our regular book reviewer Gary Mepsted with his thoughts on Young Adult literature...

YA LITERATURE, A BAD THING? My partner has just had her first novel published. It’s being marketed, expediently, under the YA category and as a result of working closely with her on the book, I’ve found myself in an unhealthy proximity to a great many YA titles. YA is a genre for which I’d had a sneaking disrespect, and I’d kept a safe distance between me and it. Given my advanced years, I’m clearly way outside the demographic for such fiction although it is, apparently, read by a high proportion of adults.  Being a writer and editor, I think (hope) I can claim to know what constitutes ‘good writing’, and I feel passionately that teenage readers are having a thor21 oughly shoddy product foisted upon them. Reading appears to have become more and more proscriptive as marketing has tawken hold and dictates what is available. There’s horrible conformity to the bulk of YA output, which is evident from the covers alone. The prose style appears to be algorithm generated. I often find it impossible to differentiate between author X, Y or Z.    Back in t’old days children were largely left to navigate their own way through the literary landscape, hence it was possible to move from Enid Blyton to Conan Doyle to Thomas Hardy and back to Richmal Crompton and A.A. Milne. No barriers were set. Children had the freedom, and were frequently encouraged, to read whatever took their fancy. They were not corralled so confiningly by categories. And how self-reflexive and desiccated those categories have become, YA perhaps exemplifying the worst elements of writing for young people with their over-familiar, off-theshelf storylines: boy/girl from different cultural/social backgrounds thwarted in love; boy/girl have their love destroyed through one of them having some terminal illness; boy/girl battle the forces of a brutal dystopian society; boy/girl enter a dragon filled fantasy world via some hitherto undiscovered portal, etc, etc.

So, might I make a plea for a more stimulating and varied reading model; let’s liberate our teenage readers from the literary gulag that is YA and foster a much broader and more inclusive approach. Younger readers should be exhorted to explore the riches of literature without having their hands held or, indeed, tied. A fifteen year old tackling Nabokov, Waugh, Murdoch, etc, is preferable to that same fifteen year old being marooned in the chill and sterile environment of YA literature. Gary Mepsted

Congratulations to Fiveways funeral celebrant Frances Tulley...

The latest column from Nelson, a four-legged Fiveways resident...

NELSON’S WALKS September is a great time to reclaim the seafront for dog kind. The weather is still dry (most of the time), the sea is warm, if you fancy a dip, and the tourists have more or less gone home. Restrictions to beaches for us dogs still exist until 30th September (from 1st May every year) but this walk includes a lovely stretch of dog friendly beaches with a stop at Ovingdean Café for a cup of tea, a slice of homemade cake and a drink of water and treat for me!

GOOD FUNERAL AWARDS 2017 Fiveways resident Frances Tulley has been selected to go through to the final stages of this year’s Good Funeral Awards ceremony in London on Thursday 7 September.

Start: Brighton Marina – parking is free in the multi-storey and many buses run to the Marina from the town centre 25 Walk length: approx 3 miles (longer for us dogs as we don’t walk in a straight line!) Time: 60 minutes Terrain: Flat and wheelchair/buggy friendly (with the option of a hillier walk on the way back) Other: Dog friendly beaches - between West Marina wall and Rottingdean Slope The walk: Make your way to the West Marina wall (above Asda Superstore) and follow the cliff wall all the way to Ovingdean Gap. Return: retrace your steps or take the steps to the cliff top and follow the edge of the cliff back to the Marina. Do let me or Hannah (at The Pet Shed) know if you like this walk and if you have any favourite walks you would like me to try out – ending in a nice dog friendly watering hole. Hannah can be contacted via email on thepetshed1@gmail.com. Map data ©2017 Google

She is now in line to win the prestigious national title of Funeral Celebrant of the Year. Brian Jenner, co-organiser, said: “The Good Funeral Awards recognise all those unsung heroes who work so hard for the bereaved and whose role can so easily be overlooked. Some of the nicest people in Britain work in the funeral business.” For more information go to www.goodfuneralawards.co.uk or contact Frances on 07884 438049.

fiveways The next in our series of recipes by local kitchen coach Sarah McLoughlin...

CHOCOLATE CHIP AND CHERRY SHORTBREAD COOKIES Crisp buttery shortbread bursting with chocolate chips and cherries, a perfect ‘back to school’ lunch box treat! Ingredients 240g butter, room temperature (not margarine), 120g caster sugar, 360g plain flour, 100g chocolate chips,

27

100g glacé cherries halved. Method: •

Cream butter and sugar until light and fluffy, add the flour and stir until the mixture starts to come together. Add the chocolate chips and cherries and tip out onto work surface and knead until smooth.

Divide the mixture in half and roll out to about 1cm thick, cut out cookies (I used a 9cm round pastry cutter), place on trays lined with non-stick baking paper and sprinkle with caster sugar. Repeat with other half of mixture.

Cook at 150C for about 30-40 minutes until the cookies start to brown around the edge.

Leave to cool for a few minutes and then transfer onto a cooling rack.

These cookies must be made with butter as you don’t get the nice buttery taste if you use margarine. They can also be cut into different shapes or made with smaller cutters but the cooking time would have to be altered accordingly.

This shortbread mix can be cooked plain or have many other ingredients added such as raisins, dried cranberries, lemon or orange zest to name a few. It is a simple recipe that is great for getting the children involved with baking and makes a lovely treat to pop into lunchboxes. It is also the perfect gift to take when visiting friends, wrapped in cellophane and tied with a bow! Sarah McLoughlin is a local kitchen coach, passionate about teaching traditional home baking through her locally held lessons, workshops and baking group. Sarah also sells delicious cakes, fudge and home baked hampers locally. www.letscookathome.co.uk Facebook: Let’s Cook at Home Instagram: lets_cook_at_home 01273 646474 / 07905 701386

QUIZ QUESTION SEVEN : What is the substance known by the chemical formula NH3?

fiveways Welcome to the September edition of Fiveways Gardens...

IN THE GARDEN...SEPTEMBER 2017 Carry on dead-heading late-flowering plants like dahlias, rudbeckias and penstemons, as well as your annuals in hanging baskets and containers. These can be kept going well into autumn, with a bit of tlc like this, and another feed. Lots of herbaceous perennials (plants that emerge in spring, do their thing and die back again in winter) are way past their best and many can be cut down to a few inches above ground. It’s worth thinking about doing this even with plants that don’t necessarily look scrappy, but have flowered and are now in the way of plants just coming into their own. For example, I recently cut down a large iris, that was growing in front of some sedum and Miscanthus (zebra grass). Now the iris is out of the way, I can really appreciate the contrasting forms of the flat heads of the sedum associating really well with the tall stripy grass. If we get a warm sunny month, some of the plants that we cut back hard now will grow fresh leaves, keeping the garden looking fresher into autumn. It’s also worth looking at clumps of tired-looking perennials. Many can be dug up now, divided and re-planted. This invigorates many plants, giving a much better show next year. If you’ve got gaps in the borders, and you probably do, treat yourself to some late-flowering perennials, such as Echinaceas, crocosmia, asters, sedums, penstemons and dahlias. There are a few heleniums that do well in our free-draining, dry soil, but do check as most need moist soil. You’ll find some fab pots of all sorts of grasses that will keep looking great well into winter and associate well with these plants.

Dahlia ‘Bishop of Llandaff’

Finally, for those of you that can’t resist a bargain, it’s worth nosing around garden centres and nurseries for the herbaceous plants that are now way past their best.

M: 07957 751 218 lisa@lilybud.co.uk

Although they look rubbish now, get them planted in the autumn and you’ll have some lovely, strong plants to delight you next year that will have been a bargain. Best wishes, Lisa

Garden centres will want them out of the way to make room for the autumn stock coming in.

Local news...

SNOWDOG CELEBRATION DAY AT BALFOUR PRIMARY SCHOOL At the end of the summer term, Balfour Primary School held a Snowdog Celebration Day and After School Party. The school had raised enough money to buy one of the Snowdogs to raise money for the Martlets hospice in memory of one of their students who died three years ago due to a rare type of cancer. Her name was Niamh Storey Davidson and her twin brother Zach is moving from Balfour School to secondary school in September. Niamh’s family thought that Niamh would have loved the Snowdog trail and would have had a few favourites - as 37any she absolutely loved all dogs. Her answer to almost question was “Get a dog!” In fact, if you ever had the pleasure to play “vegetable, mineral or animal” with Niamh, you would know that her choice was always dog! Niamh also loved the snow and a special family memory was escaping the hospital to go to Ditchling Beacon for an hour where they gathered a pot of snow and took it back to the hospital with them, so the school community believed that the image of the dog and the Snowdog story would make it a perfect memorial to Niamh and a fun and friendly addition to the Balfour campus.

The school bought Bobby the Snowdog – the first choice of the family - at the auction and he now sits in a beautiful garden in the playground. Sussex Police who sponsored Bobby attended the event with police dogs, as well as Katherine Griffin, the artist who painted Bobby, local YouTube star Alfie Deyes, and staff from the Martlets.

BRIGHTON AND HOVE OLDER PEOPLE’S FESTIVAL

ORPHEUS YOUNG SINGERS!

An exciting two-week festival for people aged 50+ will once again be held across Brighton and Hove this September.

This is a fantastic opportunity for 9-14s who enjoy singing. Launched in 2015 by the Brighton Orpheus Choir and led by its director Stella Hull and soprano Shona Knight, OYS performs with an adult choir, professional soloists and orchestra in prestigious venues as well as having other concert opportunities. Such a beautiful performance... It was wonderful...thank you for creating such a brilliant opportunity for the children.

Starting on September 25th, the Brighton and Hove Older People’s Festival will see a packed programme of events such as the Notorious Women of Brighton History Walks, a Houses of Parliament tour, Facebook for Fun classes, special Silver Screens at the Duke of York Cinema, the Brighton & Hove Buses Bus depot tour, Hollingbury Hillfort Healthwalk and golf taster session, a tour of Preston Circus Fire station, some walking football activities and a Southern Water Sewer tour. The Theatre Royal is putting on a 1960s backstage tour and talk, and there is also a science afternoon and a tour of the Amex stadium for older LGBT people, to name just a few of the events. Also confirmed is the “Full of Life Fair” at The Open Market on Sunday 1st October (Older People’s Day) with Herbie Flowers and The All Stars at 1pm. Other musical contributions will be presented by Singing for Better Health, a local choir of volunteers aged 50+, Silver Sounds Senior Samba Band, and the Silver Strings. Details of all of the events, times and locations can be viewed at www.opf.org.uk and festival programmes will be in venues across the city from 1st September.

After a great performance last year we’re honoured to have been asked again to join BOC in leading the City Christmas Charity Concert in All Saints Church Hove on Thursday, December 7th. OYS meets in Balfour Primary School BN1 6NE on Wednesdays from 5.30pm-6.30pm from September 13th. Cost is only £40 per term after a free first rehearsal. Parents - you can sing too! Why not try our BOC Open Evening on Wednesday, September 20th. www.brightonorpheus.org 07783 909629
