WELCOME TO THE FIVEWAYS DIRECTORY! We have details of plenty of events for you this October, including the Ageing Well Festival, where anyone over 50 can try new activities such as electric cycling. To commemorate the evacuation of children from London 80 years ago at the beginning of World War Two, we have a report on a former evacuee who has retraced the last leg of his journey from London to Brighton at Brighton Station and Downs Junior School, accompanied by schoolchildren and the Take Shelter team, who look after the school’s wartime air-raid shelter. We also hear from new local Hollingdean & Stanmer councillor Martin Osborne.

A NEW TYPE OF DINER

We offer incredible new versions of food and drink that you might find familiar. We have sodas made in house with some help from our centrifuge machine. They have around one tenth of the sugar of regular sodas. Our cocktails are crafted with loving care using house made essences, bitters and artisanal spirits. Some of our cakes have no added sugar. Some are completely dairy free. We are really proud of our velvety, house made, organic cashew and tiger nut milk blend.

Our coffee has to be tasted to be believed. We only use the best butter, virgin coconut oil (for our many non dairy/vegan creations) and extra virgin olive oil for dressing. Our tea is brewed in clean glass, to the perfect temperature.

Everything we have is completely free of gluten. That's right, everything. Even our house made sourdough, sweet bakes and our buttermilk pancakes. Our aim is excellence as standard. We make super food for super people.

QUIZ QUESTION SIX:

What is Prince William’s second name?

LOCAL FIVEWAYS BUSINESS www.stclairbuilders.co.uk

fiveways News from the Friends of Hollingbury & Burstead Woods...

SEASON OF MISTS AND MELLOW FRUITFULNESS Yes, autumn is here again and John Keats’ poem To Autumn describes so poignantly this season of change. Sadly the “warm days” he mentions are diminishing now, but the mix of high humidity, sun and torrential downpours we’ve experienced this spring and summer have resulted in filling “all fruit with ripeness to the core”. These fruits can be seen in abundance in the woods and hedgerows of Hollingbury and Burstead. Over the years our volunteers have planted a variety of trees to provide fruits, nuts and berries for the birds and small mammals to help sustain them through the long winter months. We have a healthy population of voles and shrews judging by the numbers we see when working in the glades, and the birds that inhabit the woods appreciate the haws and hips of the hawthorn and wild roses. This year the dogwood has flowered profusely and produced many clusters of shiny black fruits that are particularly liked by the blackbirds and thrushes. You may have been taking advantage of nature’s bounty too as you try and reach those succulent blackberries amongst the vicious thorns but we hope you remembered to leave some for the birds and field mice. The wasps and bees make good use of the late-flowering ivy and the berries, which last well into the winter, help sustain the birds when little else is around. Now that the nesting season is over and winter is imminent we can turn our attention to working on the hedges we’ve planted; clearing competing undergrowth, trimming back where necessary, but retaining the fruits and berries that haven’t yet been eaten. We will also be repairing the hedge on the boundary fronting Hollingbury Rise West which has been trampled and damaged

The fruits of the dogwood

by people dumping garden waste and rubbish. The garden waste will eventually rot down, but sometimes it introduces non-native or invasive species into the woods and is often accompanied by plastic seed trays and flower pots. If you would like to get involved and help your local woodland you are very welcome. We meet at 10:00 on the first weekend of the month (alternating between Saturdays and Sundays) by the green container just inside the southern gates to Roedale allotments accessed via Golf Drive, off Brentwood Road. Tools, training and refreshments provided, but please wear sensible shoes and bring strong gardening gloves if you have them. For more information www.fhbw.org.uk

fiveways Do you have fruit trees in your garden but don’t use all the fruit?

UNWANTED FRUIT... Brighton Permaculture Trust is a small local charity which promotes reducing food miles and food waste by collecting fruit that would otherwise go to waste. We use it to make additive-free fruit juices, cider, jams and chutneys. We estimate that more than five tonnes of fruit in Brighton & Hove is not used and therefore wasted so if you have spare garden fruit, we would like to use it. From now until the end of the year, we will be juicing apples and pears on weekend days and making them into delicious local products. Please bring any unwanted fruit to us at the Fruit Factory in Stanmer Park, BN1 9PZ (opposite Stanmer Tea Rooms), on Saturdays or Sundays from 11am to 2pm when we will be available to take it (weather permitting). In return we will give you some of our raw fresh fruit juice. If you are unable to bring your unwanted fruit to Stanmer Park but could pick it and leave it outside your property, please text/phone 07905 671453 and we will arrange a day when we can collect it. Please keep tree and ensure that picked fruit and windfall fruit separate the fruit is clean and in good condition.

QUIZ QUESTION SEVEN:

Which is Britain’s oldest Sunday newspaper, published for the first time in 1791?

fiveways Gary Mepsted with a review of work by Clare Chambers...

AUTHOR REVIEW: CLARE CHAMBERS Not so much a book review, more an author review this month. The author under scrutiny is British novelist, Clare Chambers. Clare who? Exactly. Ms Chambers’ first novel, Uncertain Terms, appeared in 1992. I reviewed it back then and recall being deeply impressed by her sinewy, amusing, and perfectly observed tale of four Oxford students attempting to come to terms with the problems that life is beginning to assault them with. A wholly delicious debut.

In a Good Light (2004) brings us Esther who, at 34, discovers herself to be imprisoned by routine and her relationship with her disabled brother, Christian. When Donovan reappears in her life, long buried memories are forced into the light. ‘Light’ shows how brilliant Clare Chambers is at creating characters which truly convince.

Back Trouble (1994) gives us Phillip, a failed 40 year old, laid low by an accident who, now bed-bound, attempts to write the story of his life. The humour and pathos here is much more focused and effective than in ‘Terms’, which was no slouch in these areas. A wonderful read. I’ve just reread it for the fourth time. Learning to Swim (1998) tells the story of Abigail who meets an old acquaintance after an absence of 13 years with unexpected results. This novel about discovering the joys, and perils, of love, sharpens Chambers’ considerable skills as a writer and makes for a thoroughly immersive read. A Dry Spell (2000) deals with the repercussions of a trip undertaken by four students to the Algerian desert in 1976. Chambers’ trademark humour is as present and joyous as ever, but this a much bleaker tale and all the better for it.

PAINTER & DECORATOR Paul Robertson Insured Referenced Reliable 01273 240160 07961 125069 PR Decorating

The Editor’s Wife (2007), my personal favourite and, thus far, Chambers’ last novel for adults, introduces us to aspiring novelist Christopher Flinders who drops out of university to write his masterpiece. He’s taken up by editor Owen Goddard and Diana, his lovely wife. A horrible misjudgement forces Christopher to abandon London and take up life in rural Yorkshire. Despite the wit, this novel is shot through with compelling and necessary sadness. I’m aware that these brief sketches hardly do Clare Chambers, or her novels justice, but they will, I hope, bring this superb writer more devoted readers. The quality of Chambers’ writing outshines that of any current novelist I can think of who’s exploring similar territory, the riches and grinding emotional poverty which are part of all human relationships. I cannot understand why Clare Chambers is not much better known than she is. Read her and recommend her. She deserves it.

What is the hard, set polymer used in old-fashioned telephones and electrical insulators?

fiveways This article is by Yajie Dong…

BRIGHTON BROTHERS RECREATE EVACUEE JOURNEY On the 80th anniversary (September 3rd) of the declaration of WWII, two Brighton brothers, Barry and Gerald Gooders, recreated their journey as child evacuees from London to Brighton in 1939, before visiting Take Shelter, the only restored school air raid shelter and public interactive museum in the UK. Barry and Gerald were evacuated to Brighton from their home in Thornton Heath, London, when they were 7 and 5 years old, after war was declared. Brighton school children and veteran evacuees accompanied Barry and Gerald on this emotional journey. They travelled to Brighton on a modern Thameslink Class 700 train, then took a classic Routemaster bus to Downs Junior School, which houses the only school air raid shelter open to the public in Britain. The room fell silent when Chamberlain’s declaration of war was replayed on the radio at precisely 11.15am. Barry and the children recreated this pivotal wartime moment, 80 years on from the original broadcast of the iconic ‘Declaration of War’ speech at Downs Junior School. Thereafter, Barry invited guests to share his personal memories and first hand wartime stories in the underground air raid shelter.
