WELCOME TO THE FIVEWAYS DIRECTORY!! Autumn is well and truly here now and it’s great to have the Martlets Snailspace giant snails to brighten up our city. Our featured local person is Fiveways artist Emma Fish, who has created two of the snails. Another event this month is the Brighton Early Music Festival, which begins on 26th October. If you’re a classical music fan, it’s a good idea to get hold of a brochure or look online and book your tickets now. The Brighton Science Festival is back and there’s a Lantern Walk in Preston Park for Halloween. The Friends of Hollingbury & Burstead Woods bring us news on their move from an old flint barn to a storage container on the allotments. If you enjoy fresh air and nature, they could do with some help to keep the woods looking good. Have a great October! QUIZ QUESTION ONE:
Often connected to Halloween, who wrote the original story of Frankenstein?
fiveways Meet a local artist who’s designed two of the Snailspace snails...
FIVEWAYS FACE – EMMA FISH Emma Fish lives in Fiveways. She is the art co-ordinator for the Martlets Snailspace trail and has created two of the snails, Geronimo and Conch. She also designs and makes jewellery, under her company name of Brighton Jewel. What did you have to do in your role as art co-ordinator for the project? I liaised with the artists and helped with any technical queries they had regarding the painting of their snails. We were fortunate to have the use of an empty warehouse as our Snailspace HQ, so many of the local artists worked there. It was great for me to get to know them and for them to get to know each other. I kept an eye on progress and made sure all the snails were finished on time. I was also involved in delivering the snails to their positions out on the streets. I fix them if they get broken, which we always hope they won’t! I help with collecting them in at the end of the trail and touch up any damage to get them looking as good as new, ready for the auction.
Emma with Conch
Where can we see your snails? Geronimo is on The Level and Conch is on Gloucester Road. How did you get the inspiration for your designs? Geronimo was a design based on the marketing brand created for Snailspace. I created it with a lot of masking tape and spray paints, although many people think it’s stickers. The silver studs are turned aluminium and the blue nose stud is actually a door handle embedded in its nose. I met When I heard Punktured were a sponsor I said we should with Julie, the owner of Punktured, to discuss my design have a punk snail and the concept of Conch was imagined. and she said if she had designed it herself she would have My favourite colour is bright pink, a lot of my jewellery created the same one, so it was a perfect match. is made in fluorescent Perspex and silver, and Conch What do you like to do in your spare time? combines all of this. I like simplicity in my work. I knew the problem of attachments on sculptures, having worked I like to kayak and go to the beach. on the Snowdogs project, so the practicality of creating Conch was worked out over a few beers at my dining For more information on Snailspace, visit www.snailroom table with my partner Ashley, who has a background spacebrighton.co.uk, and for more on Emma’s work, in engineering. visit www.brightonjewel.co.uk.

fiveways Ray, the popular local shopkeeper, who used to run Corner News three years ago has returned to the shop...
LOCAL SHOP...CORNER NEWS Rezan Ihsan Baksi runs Corner News at 178c Ditchling Road with his brother. What made you re-buy your newsagent in Fiveways after a three-year break? Corner News always had its own potential. The customers are very nice and polite. Consistency of the trade has always made Corner News special. The moment we sold and left Corner News two years ago, we realised what a big mistake we had made. Now I have my brother with me as well and running the business is a lot easier and more fun. What do you most like about running your shop? It’s very easy to work in Corner News because of its size, and it’s close to the cash-and-carries. I especially like chatting to the elderly customers who live in the tower buildings across the road and listening to their experiences.

This drawing, based on a photograph, shows the site of the present Preston Circus. On the left is New England Farm and New England Road, then known as Montpelier Road. The viaduct had been built a few years earlier, in 1845, but there were no houses north of the farm until Preston Village was reached. fiveways An opportunity to see a Holbein portrait in Brighton...
NATIONAL GALLERY MASTERPIECE AT BRIGHTON MUSEUM Hans Holbein the Younger’s “A Lady with a Squirrel and a Starling (Anne Lovell?)” has travelled the length and breadth of the country this year and is coming to Brighton on 13th October as part of the National Gallery’s Masterpiece Tour. The Masterpiece Tour reflects the National Gallery’s commitment to promoting the understanding, study and appreciation of its collection to as wide an audience as possible. A major Gallery painting is touring the UK each year between 2018 and 2020. The painting is one of Hans Holbein the Younger’s earliest English portraits and one of his most engaging and beautiful works. This touching portrait holds many secrets to decode. Alongside this 16th century masterpiece, the functions and meanings of portraiture from the period will be explored through a selection of works from Brighton Museum’s own collection. The picture will be on its final stop before returning home, so don’t miss this unique opportunity to see it here in Brighton. 13 October 2018 to 6 January 2019 For more information, visit brightonmuseums.org.uk

fiveways Hannah from the Pet Shed gives her advice on your pet problems...
PET PROBLEM CORNER Welcome to our feature helping pet owners around the Fiveways area with advice. This month, as nights are drawing in, pet owners are starting to think about keeping their dogs warmer during the cooler weather and the impact that Bonfire Night has. Should I be getting my dog a coat? This really depends on the dog and the breed. Some dogs are fine in cooler weather, particularly those breeds, such as huskies, that were bred for cooler climates and have a thick double coat. Other dogs benefit from a warm layer and there are lots of different coats and jumpers on the market. Watch for tell-tale signs of shivering as the days get cooler. Even if the cold isn’t a problem, a coat can also be useful for keeping your dog dry in the wet. My pet hates loud noises and I am worried about him around Bonfire Night. What can I do to help? It is a sad reality that, with fireworks being so easy to get hold of, pets suffer a great deal around Bonfire Night. Indiscriminate use of fireworks has a lasting effect but there are steps you can take to help. Bourbon is a prime example of a nervous dog so I start her on a course of Dorwest Herbs Skullcap and Valerian tablets at least a week before 5th November. This allows the tablets to get to work in her system and by the time Bonfire Night comes along she is quite relaxed. You can also use other remedies such as Valerian Compound (fast acting so also great for sudden, unexpected noises such as thunder and also good for travel sickness) or a plug in/spray such as Pet Remedy. On the day itself a nice long walk during the day for a dog will ensure they are suitably tired. At home make sure that your pet has a safe place to go, close all windows and turn the TV or radio up a little louder to drown out the noise. Try not to change your routine but offer play or new toys to distract. Each pet is unique so some will just want to hide until it is all over.
Hannah is the current proud pet parent of 15 including her dog (Bourbon, a regular at her shop), three cats, Starsky the tortoise, two snakes, turkeys, chickens and guinea pigs. Have a pet related question? Drop a line to Hannah at thepetshed1@gmail.com or pop in and see her at The Pet Shed, 100 Preston Drove, BN1 6EW.

fiveways News from the Friends of Hollingbury & Burstead Woods...
THE FRIENDS OF HOLLINGBURY & BURSTEAD WOODS NEED YOU! So far this year it’s been a case of ups and downs for the friends’ group... We were feeling very down after the council sold the old flint barn we’d used since the early 1990s; however the move to our storage container on the allotments went better than anticipated. We do hope the council will allocate some of the £305,000 it made from the sale towards environmental conservation projects in the city or to the ranger service so that something positive for nature and the community can come of its sale. The downside of the move is that our meeting place on the allotments is not so prominent and volunteer numbers for our monthly work sessions have on average almost halved since the move. Hopefully this is due to holidays and not a sign of waning interest as we have a full autumn and winter work programme and can only do this with the help of volunteers. Another down of the move is that we are having to amend our membership forms and get them reprinted, but thanks to the generosity of our supporters we have the funds to cover this. We do still need help with the running of the group so if anyone out there would like to help with social media, the website, publicity or our newsletter please do come forward; you wouldn’t necessarily have to be on the committee so it wouldn’t be an onerous task, but if you did want to join us you’d be most welcome on the committee. We’ll end on a high with the news that the group’s hard work in the woods has been recognized by the South & South East in Bloom organization with a Silver Gilt award in the ‘Large Conservation Area’ category.
We were entered by our Ranger and showed the judges around in June but weren’t expecting to win anything so we were delighted to accept this award on behalf of our volunteers and supporters. If you enjoy getting some fresh air and exercise and doing something worthwhile then why not give us a try? You don’t have to come every month but you’ll be made very welcome: tools, training and a cuppa/biscuits midmorning are provided; just turn up in sturdy footwear and bring gardening gloves if you have them. Next session is 10:00–13:00, Saturday 6th October – for more details see fhbw.org.uk

COMMUNITY BUYS DEFIBRILLATOR... The Cleveland Arms in Cleveland Road has installed and is hosting an Automated External Defibrillator (AED) for the Fiveways, Blakers Park and Preston Park community. Jamie and Sarah Davies who own the independent pub opposite Blakers Park were keen to ensure they house an AED that will help save lives. Working with its customers, local businesses and the Blakers Park Tennis Club, within a few months enough money, along with a grant from the Sussex Heart Charity, has been raised to buy one for the local area. The Cleveland Arms donated all its profits from the Beer Tent at the Blakers Park Summer Fair. Heineken donated stock to help increase profits on the day. The Blakers Park tennis team donated their Summer Tournament entry fee to the cause and there was also a generous donation made by Iain Carter of My Mortgage Company. What is an AED? It’s a portable device that diagnoses life-threatening cardiac issues and treats them through defibrillation. The electricity provided by the device stops the cardiac arrest and allows the heart to establish an effective rhythm. How do you use it? If you feel you are with someone who needs the support, you call 999 for an ambulance. Whilst you are waiting for the ambulance, the emergency services will advise you of your nearest AED and the code of the cabinet it is in. Once you open the device, you will hear clear instructions on how to use it. It’s very easy to use and you don’t need to be trained to use it.

THE ATLAS OF BEAUTY.. WOMEN OF THE WORLD IN 500 PORTRAITS
HOW TO READ AND WHY
BY MIHAELA NOROC
Harper hardback, £18.99
Penguin paperback, £10.99
Francine Prose’s Reading Like a Writer is, as I tell my writing students, an essential purchase. How to Read and Why picks up where that wonderful book left off. This collection of essays celebrates the unduplicable pleasure of reading in an age where we are relentlessly assaulted by visual stimuli, which has reduced our attention spans to that of the average goldfish. The solitary nature of reading, the investment required to get to the final page is, Prose argues, amply rewarded in the pleasure it brings and the stimulation it provides. We are better people if we read. Prose features many of the great novelists, Dickens, Shelley, Eliot, Austen, and a few contemporary writers too. Because the authors featured are favourites, her joy in their craft is powerfully communicated. There are a couple of pieces on the practice of writing as a bonus. There’s definitely a space on your shelves for How to Read and Why. Gary Mepsted
BY FRANCINE PROSE
Two books were competing for review status this month. Not being able to decide which one would make the cut, I’ve decided to feature them both. Let’s kick off with The Atlas of Beauty: women of the world in 500 portraits. Mihaela Noroc’s project - originally small in scope and funded with her own savings - has taken her across the globe, photographing women from all countries and cultures. Some portraits have brief stories attached to give the images context, others offer nothing but location. The portraits themselves are fascinating, technically perfect obviously - and command more than a brief look. The book is thick at 350+ pages, but the images encourage you to linger rather than turn the page; always a good sign for a photography book where immersion is the sine qua non for success. I do have a quibble, and that’s related to the size of the book. Photography books are frequently large, cumbersome volumes designed for impact, rather than ease of reading. While it’s convenient to have a portable, read anywhere book, these photographs would greatly benefit from being larger and printed in a higher quality. This would inevitably increase the cost and probably dent sales too. A compromise then, but perhaps a legitimate one. The Atlas of Beauty is not just for photographers; it’s a valuable, and salutary, account of the role of women and the enormous contribution they make. Mihaela Noric is to be applauded for this beautiful and enlightening book. It may, as the song has it, be a man’s world, but it wouldn’t mean nothin’ without a woman or a girl.

BRIGHTON SCIENCE FESTIVAL The Brighton Science Festival is back this October. For young folks (age 7-14) and parents, Hand-On Half-Term is back in various places around Brighton (October 20-26). The concept is simple: you look out for people who would like to show young people extraordinary things and help them do extraordinary things, then you let people know about it. The result is an avalanche of humanity romping through the nooks and crannies of Brighton, having a whale of a time and learning new skills, from sewing to computer programming, to space flight to Einstein. For adults, The Big Monstrous Day (Sunday October 28) will be dealing with monstrous subjects in this anniversary year of Frankenstein - 200 years old in November, and still not quite dead. In modern times we are seeing the ascendance of Frankensteinianism: we can modify the genomes of our beloveds (puppies at the moment, children soon); we can use surgery and medicine to extend our lives by decades (nobody need die!); we regularly donate our body parts to others; we

have robots replacing us in the workplace; we are being watched, judged and manipulated by social media and internet monsters. We will hear all about these. More than that, we will be encouraged to debate the issues, partly because it’s a good idea, partly as a demonstration of our freedom to speak and think for ourselves. Big Science Saturday (Saturday October 27) has speakers on six different and fascinating topics including: Brian Clegg - The Graphene Revolution Graphene is far stronger than steel and a far better conductor than any metal. Components made from it are a fraction of the size of silicon chips and can be both flexible and transparent. The possibilities are limitless. Brian tells of the dreams, the discovery, the hectic research being carried out and the magical future of graphene. Andrew Elliott - Is That A Big Number? Impressive statistics are thrown at us every day - the cost of health care; the scale of an earthquake; the distance to the nearest star; how many atoms in a full stop. How can we hope to grasp what they mean? Andrew Elliott is at hand to help. Giving us the tools and tips to tame the numerous beasts, he will take the Tera out of the Nano for us. fiveways A local group who have been raising money for charity for over 100 years...
ROTARY CLUB OF BRIGHTON When we recently took a stall at the Rottingdean Village Fair which, this year, commemorated the outbreak of the First World War, we discovered that our club was possibly the only organisation present which would have been in existence at that time. We were founded in 1913 and chartered in 1917 which makes us one of the oldest Rotary Clubs in the UK and we are the oldest of the four Brighton Rotary Clubs, some of which are daughter clubs of ours. Several people asked us about Rotary and some told us what they thought Rotary is. The following is an attempt to correct misconceptions: 29 Rotary is NOT: a secret society a branch of Freemasonry a political or religious organization. We do not just collect money for our administration (everything we collect goes out to charities - our subscriptions cover any overheads). WE ARE: part of a worldwide organisation of over 1.2 million people in 33,000 clubs. Members provide humanitarian service, encourage high ethical standards in all vocations and help build goodwill and peace in the world. The Rotary motto is “Service above Self”. What do we do? As a club we organise events for members and friends and the wider community (eg quiz nights, race nights and occasional outings). We have our annual Santa “Round the Houses” which we have done for 40 years which raises revenue to go to charities. We run youth events such as Young Citizen and Youth Speaks. We sponsor students on gap years, give donations to local charities and to schools and also host students from overseas who are studying here on Rotary Scholarships. In the same way, UK students are hosted by overseas Rotary Clubs when studying abroad. Recently we have raised money for: the Air Ambulance, Chailey Heritage, Patcham High School, St Mark’s School, medical students doing an elective, the Royal Sussex
This publication is made entirely possible through the support of its advertisers!! Support them where you can!!
The Rotary Club Young Citizens Awards County Hospital (which we have been supporting for 100 years!), schools overseas where we have a local connection, and for disaster relief. So this is the Rotary Club of Brighton, founded by five local businessmen with vision over 100 years ago and serving the community ever since. However, Rotary is not all about good works. Friendship and fellowship are important too. We meet on a Wednesday lunchtime (12.30pm) at the Royal Albion Hotel in Brighton and there is an additional meeting on the first Monday of the month at 6pm in their verandah. We are always happy to welcome new members and if you would like to find out more about us then visit us at the Royal Albion or see our homepage: www.rotary-ribi.org/clubs/homepage.php?ClubID=1439
