QUIZ QUESTION ONE:

What colour was Rupert Bear’s face in early books and annuals?

fiveways Meet a local artist...

FIVEWAYS FACE – ANNABEL WYATT Annabel Wyatt is an artist and lives in Preston Drove. How long have you lived in Fiveways? I’ve lived in Fiveways now for around two years and in Brighton generally for three (I was born in Birmingham). Previously, I lived in London and tried to work as an artist there, but of course, it was unattainable! I’m glad I got the chance to give it a go though. I think the Fiveways area is perfect and am very grateful that I get to live here.  Tell us about your art... The monoprints and paintings I make are now very ab5 stract compared to my old work. I go through rounds of photos taken in the street, sketch them all out as simple line drawings and then I’ll work from those to create monoprints or large scale paintings. My front room is fast being taken over by my art, as is the rest of the flat to be honest, but I wouldn’t have it any other way!  Do you exhibit your art in the Fiveways Artists Open Houses trail? I would love to do this one day! At the moment, I am very much enjoying getting to know those that do, blogging about what I find and sharing my thoughts on my blog. In the future I’ll be writing my application, no doubt. For now, I sell my smaller prints on my Etsy shop (search Annabel Wyatt Art), and my larger works on my Saatchi Art page (search Annabel Wyatt).  Who are your own favourite artists? I have always been inspired by German Expressionist painters like Max Beckmann and Ernst Ludwig Kirchner. John Kørner’s work stood out to me when I saw an exhibition he was part of in Copenhagen as well as an amazing installation piece by Jacob Remin! I think Instagram is an excellent place for finding artists and new artwork to be inspired by too. I follow hundreds of artists and save their work to look at later.

What do you like to do when you’re not working? I think Brighton’s charity shops are amazing and do “the circuit” on the weekends when I’m not working my other job and making art. Going to galleries and crafting are also big pastimes - friends have found themselves making cards or collages when they come round on several occasions. fiveways News from the council...

PRESTON PARK ROSE GARDEN TO BE RESTORED The herbaceous borders in the Rose Garden at Preston Park will be blooming lovely next summer after winning a public vote for their restoration. Residents were asked to choose between two potential projects after Brighton & Hove City Council secured around £150,000 funding from car parking fees and local developers to be spent in Preston Park. The proposed projects were restoring the Coronation Garden (the former blind garden next to Preston Manor) and replanting the herbaceous borders at the edge of the Rose 7 Garden. Around 250 people voted and the results were very close with the Rose Garden winning by just six votes. Work on the garden, which includes clearing existing planting, redesigning and replanting the borders and installing heritage benches in the bays, is due to start soon and be completed by summer 2018. There’s also good news for those who voted for the Coronation Garden as the council is hoping to have enough funding left over to begin restoration work next year returning it back to a wildflower meadow.

Cllr Gill Mitchell, chair of the Environment, Transport and Sustainability Committee said: “It’s really important that local people are involved in helping making decisions over how money is spent in their local parks, and I’d like to thank all those who voted.” The public vote and projects put forward are part of the Preston Park Conservation Management Plan, a joint initiative with the Friends of Preston Park and the council’s Cityparks department. The council is hoping to attract further funding to support additional projects identified in the Management Plan.

Across the park can be seen Preston Park Avenue, Beaconsfield Villas, Havelock Road and Waldegrave Road, all in course of building. fiveways Our regular fitness column from Marianne Clark…

DRESS FOR (AUTUMNAL) SUCCESS So, the holidays are over, the kids are back at school, the evenings are drawing in and summer is officially over. I’m not absolutely certain when summer began; it seems to get harder every year to spot the start. We used to get little clues like sunshine and blue skies to help identify the seasonal changes, but they are not so reliable these days. You can be certain of one thing, however; the weather will only get worse from here on. If you thought that’s an excuse to stay in and bunk off the exercise though, think again. There’s no such thing as bad weather, only inappropriate clothing. So, here’s your essential autumn kit list to keep you outdoors whatever the conditions. 15

Base layer - Wear a thin, light, layer next to your skin to absorb sweat and keep you warm and dry. Go for technical wicking fabrics. No cotton vests! Running tights - Your legs really don’t need much insulation. Many run in shorts year round, but, if you don’t like the glowing pink knee look, get some long Lycra tights. Socks - Go for seamless construction and quick-drying materials like bamboo or sports wool which also insulate well. Avoid cotton socks, especially in the wet, unless you want blisters and trench foot!

Of course, for some conditions the only “appropriate clothing” is swimwear!!

Lightweight jacket - Something minimal, thin and light that can be easily carried when not needed. Fully waterproof garments are expensive, bulky and aren’t always very breathable, so go for a cheaper showerproof option that will keep out the wind and give you some protection from the rain. After all, what’s a bit of water?! Shoes - Invest in a second pair so you can alternate if the first pair get soaked and need drying out. Waterproof trainers sound great in principle, but if it really pours your feet will get wet, and you’re better off in shoes that allow water to drain out than those that don’t. Hat and gloves - Go for lightweight technical fabrics or merino wool which are easy to stow once you warm up. No sou’westers please - they just don’t accessorise well with Lycra! No excuse for staying indoors now. See you out there, rain or shine. Marianne Clark is a personal trainer, GB age group triathlete, and running & endurance sports coach and offers personal training, run groups and 1-2-1 run / swim / triathlon coaching for all levels from beginners up. Say goodbye to being overweight once and for all! Hands up all those who feel they’re in a constant battle to achieve a healthy and sustainable body weight. How many diets have you tried and failed, feeling totally frustrated and not knowing what to do next? Having had a weight problem for 35 years, Rachel was desperate to find a way of being able to lose weight once and for all. ‘I had just about resigned myself to the fact that I would be overweight for the rest of my life, when I came across the principles of the Metabolic Weight Loss Programme. I followed these and to my amazement, I lost 3 stone in just over 3 months and then went on to successfully maintain my weight. The relief was enormous to have found something that finally worked for me.’ Rachel became passionate about wanting to help as many people as possible with their weight problems, which led her to become a qualified weight loss consultant. In the last 14 years, she has helped over 5,000 clients from all walks of life to help bring their dieting days to an end once and for all. ‘My clients’ ages range from 8 years to 90 years old, so there is hope for everyone!’

For those who are not able to visit, a very successful remote support service is provided throughout the UK - distance is no object!

Joanne from Surrey.

Rachel and her team give weekly one-to-one consultations, guiding you through the programme with personalised support, lots of empathy and total conviction in the success of the programme. Email support is available in between consultations.

QUIZ QUESTION THREE:

‘This isn’t an open-ended slimming club,’ says Rachel. ‘We set your target weight at the beginning and then get on with the business of helping you lose the weight, addressing any difficulties along the way, then we concentrate on keeping it off – for good!’

“Your support was invaluable and made it possible for me to lose 3 stones. My health, energy levels and selfesteem have all improved. Thank you so much."

One of the popular aspects of the Metabolic Weight Loss Programme is there’s nothing faddish about it. There are no meal replacements, diet shakes or diet pills. All the foods on the programme are easily obtainable. Clients frequently say just how easy it is to follow, they don’t feel hungry and are not having to constantly battle with cravings. The four stages of the programme are tailored as necessary to provide the maximum results for each client.

16

Rachel Ricketts, Weight Loss Consultant

Clients often comment on how impressed their doctors are with their results. ‘My doctor is very happy– I’ve been able to come off blood pressure and cholesterol medication,’ says one. Another doctor said, ‘All my lady patients on thyroid medication are struggling to lose weight, but you’ve lost 2 ½ stone despite being on thyroxin – well done!’

With an average weight loss of 7-14lb a month for clients and hundreds of hand written testimonials, Rachel’s results speak for themselves. ‘I see real results daily, time after time I see people’s lives change in front of me.’

Rachel offers free consultations for those who are wanting to lose their weight once and for all.

fiveways Some tips on reducing your risk of bowel cancer...

LIFT THE TABOO ON BOWEL CANCER TO SAVE LIVES Bowel cancer is the fourth most common cancer but the second biggest cancer killer. Around 110 people are diagnosed with bowel cancer every day, but the good news is it can be successfully treated in over 90% of cases if caught early. The current high mortality rate is due to the high proportion of patients who are not diagnosed until the later stages of the disease when it is much harder to treat successfully. Most people are very surprised to hear how common bowel cancer is, as it is talked about much less than other common cancers, mainly due to the embarrassment many of us feel when talking about anything to do with bums and poo. In order to improve early diagnosis rates 17 we need to get everybody talking about the disease. What can we do to reduce our own risk? Bowel Screening Bowel screening tests are posted to everyone registered with a GP once they reach 60. The test is done over the course of a few days at home and is a quick and effective way of detecting any blood in your stools which could be a sign of cancer. The test is simple to do. It’s important to put aside a few minutes to do it even if you feel healthy.

When you are aged 55, you may also be invited to go for an NHS bowel scope screening, which is a relatively new test. It finds and removes any small bowel growths, called polyps, which could eventually turn into cancer. Know the symptoms Beating Bowel Cancer advises people to go to the GP if they have any of the following symptoms for three weeks or more: • •

fiveways Our book review from Gary Mepsted...

“MIDWINTER BREAK” BY BERNARD MACLAVERTY JONATHAN CAPE, HARDBACK, £14.99 Written after a sixteen-year hiatus, Bernard MacLaverty’s new novel, Midwinter Break, instantly made me realise how much I’d missed him. Retired couple Gerry and Stella Gilmore fly to Amsterdam for a long weekend, to both refresh themselves and to conduct an audit on their relationship which, on the surface at least, appears placid, safe and familiar. Over the course of their four days away, the hidden fragility of their marriage is horribly exposed. Not perhaps a recipe for the most thrilling or engaging 21 read, but in MacLaverty’s hands Gerry and Stella’s story takes on an extraordinarily powerful, indeed, heartrending dimension.  The writing itself is an exercise in restraint; yes, it’s clearly beautiful, but it’s MacLaverty’s exactitude in rendering his characters’ fractured emotional states that makes Midwinter Break so addictive. There’s much humour, too, to soften and counterpoint the grief which seethes beneath the carapace of ‘getting along’.  The ‘trick’ of the best writing is to make what is supremely difficult seem effortless. Relationships are the engine which drive most fiction, our eternal struggle to forge a connection and to discover fulfilment. It’s surprising that so many critically feted novelists are woefully maladroit in this area. I’m tempted to point the finger, but won’t. MacLaverty, though, is blessed with an almost supernatural gift when it comes to the dissection of our need to find ourselves through others. There’s little else to say, really. Midwinter Break is now in its fourth reprint and it’s gratifying to see how well it’s doing, despite not featuring on the list of Booker nominees or causing much of a hoo-hah in the media. It’s been called MacLaverty’s masterpiece and I don’t think I’d disagree with that statement.

So, grab a copy immediately. I can say with confidence that it’s one of the best novels of the year. Be sure, too, to seek out Bernard MacLaverty’s other novels. I’d especially recommend his first novel, Lamb (1980). Gary Mepsted

fiveways Meet a writer who has set much of her first novel in 1980s Blakers Park...

LOCAL AUTHOR – ALLIE ROGERS Allie Rogers is a librarian at the University of Brighton. She has recently published her first novel “Little Gold”, set in 1980s Brighton, much of it in Blakers Park. Tell us about “Little Gold”... The book is a coming-of-age story set in Brighton in the summer of 1982. The title character, Little Gold, is a boyish girl of twelve. She is struggling with her peers, her parents have recently separated and her home life is descending into chaos. During the course of the summer, Little Gold and her brother, Malcy, are targeted by predatory adults who recognise their vulnerability. But, luckily, that summer Little Gold also meets her elderly neighbour, Peggy Baxter. Their friendship is at the 23heart of the book. Little Gold is a book very much of its time – there’s Adam Ant, The Falklands War and the sort of denial and hypocrisy that put so many children at risk of abuse. Did you grow up in 1980s Brighton yourself? I did. I was born in Brighton General Hospital in 1970 and I grew up near Fiveways. Those people who know Brighton well will spot that a lot of the book takes place in Blakers Park, where I spent many hours of my childhood. But the book is fiction. What other childhood memories do you have of Fiveways? So many. I remember a lot of shops that no longer exist. One of my favourites was Julie’s the haberdashery shop. I can remember being taken there for winter gloves, which were kept in a traditional haberdashery cabinet with a glass top. The small back room was like a cave of yarn, with all the different colours in little cubby holes right up to the ceiling.

I wander about town quite a lot and sometimes walk the scenic Lewes Road to get to Falmer for work. Have you got any more books planned? Yes! I’ve finished a book about intimate partner abuse in a same-sex relationship, told in the voice of a dinosaurobsessed four year old boy – provisionally called ‘Tale of a Tooth’. Look out for it in 2018.

What else do you do in your spare time? I don’t really believe in spare time. There’s just time. When I’m not at work or writing then I am probably reading or walking.

“Little Gold” by Allie Rogers is published by Legend Press and is available from City Books in Hove, as well as all good bookshops. It can be ordered online from https:// mybooksource.com/ or Amazon – both in print or for Kindle.

fiveways A seasonal recipe from local kitchen coach Sarah McLoughlin...

OAT AND PLUM GINGER SLICE A delicious comforting bake full of autumn flavours! Ingredients 140g unsalted butter, plus extra for greasing 100g dark soft brown sugar 100g golden syrup 6 small plums 140g plain flour 1 teaspoon baking powder 1 tbsp ground ginger

27

1 heaped tbsp chopped stem ginger 85g porridge oats (not jumbo) 2 large eggs, beaten, at room temperature For the topping 25g plain flour 25g porridge oats

For the topping, work the extra flour and oats into the reserved 2 tbsp of batter to make a flapjacklike dough. Crumble this over the tin and scatter with the chopped ginger.

Method:

Grease a 17 x 23cm cake tin and line with parchment. Heat oven to 180C/160C fan/gas 4.

Bake for 30 mins or until golden and risen, then cool completely in the tin. Cut into squares.

Melt the butter, sugar and syrup together in a large pan.

This bake can be served as a dessert with custard or is an ideal lunchbox treat.

While you wait, stone and quarter the plums.

When the pan ingredients are smooth, stir in the flour, baking powder, ¼ tsp salt, the gingers, oats and eggs, then beat until even. Pour all but about 2 tbsp of the batter into the prepared tin, and then scatter the batter with the plums.

2 heaped teaspoons chopped stem ginger

Sarah McLoughlin is passionate about teaching traditional home baking through her locally held lessons and workshops. She also sells delicious cakes, fudge and home baked hampers locally. www.letscookathome.co.uk Facebook: Let’s Cook at Home Twitter: letscookathome 01273 646474 / 07905 701386

QUIZ QUESTION SEVEN : What daring raid was led by Guy Gibson?

fiveways Welcome to the October edition of Fiveways Gardens...

IN THE GARDEN...OCTOBER 2017 This is a good time of year to take a long, hard look at your garden and ponder on what’s worked well and what hasn’t. A keen gardener friend of mine recently observed that us gardeners are all too quick to point out our failings and I think she’s right. So, for the record, I’m all in favour of raising a glass to our successes, of which I see plenty. However, there’s no doubt that some plants and some ideas work out better than others. Personally, I think life’s too short to live with plants that either aren’t performing or simply don’t appeal any more. Make a few notes now and, even better, take a few photos. This way, if you don’t get round to planting new stuff till next spring, you’ll have a visual reminder of what you wanted to change. Time to get browsing bulb catalogues (or garden centres and nurseries) for spring flowering bulbs. As well as your tried and tested favourites, why not try something new this year? There are all sorts of bulbs that won’t be suitable for your garden soil or aspect so perhaps you’ve not considered them. However, many will grow quite happily in containers.

Euonymus europaeus ‘Red Cascade’

It’s a really good idea to incorporate a bit of horticultural grit (available at most garden centres) in with the compost as well as putting some broken crocks or bits of polystyrene (much lighter) in the bottom of the container. Bulbs, and incidentally most winter bedding, will perform all the better for having good drainage. Whether you order from catalogues or buy from your favourite nursery or garden centre it makes sense to buy early. This way, the bulbs will be in better condition when you plant them and you’ll have a much better choice, as many of the more desirable varieties sell quickly. Autumn is arguably the best time to plant most things – shrubs, trees, climbers and perennials. The soil is still warm from the summer and there’s now evidence that roots often continue growing into December. In Brighton’s mild climate this could be prolonged into January. If you can get plants in during autumn they’ll have a root system better able to cope with whatever kind of summer we get next year. Best wishes, Lisa

QUIZ QUESTION NINE :

What destroyed millions of British trees in October 1987?

fiveways Here’s a treat for classical music lovers...

BRIGHTON EARLY MUSIC FESTIVAL 2017 27th October to 12th November It’s only a short bus ride to some excellent music this autumn! There will be three long weekends of concerts in venues around Brighton & Hove, including two new productions of early operas. The theme of this year’s Brighton Early Music Festival (BREMF) is “Roots - discovering the tangled origins of classical music”. The festival will explore the origins of some of classical music’s bestloved forms, with over 30 events taking place across the city.

37

Flagship events include two new opera productions – Monteverdi’s Orfeo and Rameau’s Pygmalion which ‘bookend’ the early period of operatic development. Orfeo will be staged at The Old Market in Hove in a new production by Thomas Guthrie, and will feature a cast of talented young singers headed by tenor Rory Carver as Orfeo. Pygmalion, at the University of Brighton’s Sallis Benney Theatre, will present a new staging by Karolina Sofulak, in collaboration with the baroque group Ensemble Molière. The development of early oratorio is explored by Musica Poetica, culminating in a performance of Carissimi’s poignantly beautiful Jephte (4th November, St George’s Church). The festival ends with a rousing performance of Bach’s Christmas Oratorio (Sunday 12th November, St Martin’s Church, Lewes Road) anticipating the approaching festive season. Folk enthusiasts can enjoy performances by Old Blind Dogs with singer Siobhan Miller (collaborating with L’Avventura London, 27th October, St George’s Church), and The Askew Sisters (2nd November, Ropetackle Arts Centre).

John Hancorn, conductor of the BREMF Singers and Players

Families are catered for with OAE TOTS concerts for pre-schoolers (pre-festival, 7th October, Friends Meeting House) and Tales in Music: The Pigeon & The Albatross (for 5-11 year olds) with the Little Baroque Company (11th November, Komedia Studio & South Portslade Community Centre). For those who prefer to attend daytime events, there are matinée performances of both Pygmalion and Orfeo, and each weekend provides at least one lunchtime recital. Tickets start at just £5 and can be booked online at the festival website - www.bremf.org.uk (no booking fee) or via Brighton Dome Ticket Office (01273 709709). You can also request a festival brochure and join the mailing list via the festival website or by phoning 01273 833746.

Would you like time and space to write?

TIME TO WRITE Fiveways Time to Write workshops are an opportunity to write alongside others in a supportive space. The three-hour workshops are at The Room Upstairs at 300 Restaurant, Ditchling Road, on Saturdays 30 September, 28 October and 25 November, 10.30am - 1.30pm. They are facilitated by Diane Medhurst and Christine Hollywood. They offer: • • • •

Time to write alongside others Inspirations for writing if you need them Space to share your writing Opportunities for coffee and refreshments.

39well Christine says, “Writing can feel lonely at times as as easy to put off or difficult to start. Time to Write workshops are a space intended to get you in the writing flow whether you’re a beginner writer or someone who already writes. Writing is such an enjoyable activity once you start. It‘s got the added benefit of being good for you too! ”

Christine and Diane co-founded The WordTherapy Centre in 2015 inspired by their love of writing, reading and words. They were spurred on by research that shows writing and connecting with our own and others’ stories

have a positive impact on our physical, emotional and mental health. fiveways A message from the council’s road safety team...

CYCLISTS AND DRIVERS WARNED OVER CAR-DOORING Parking your car? Look out for cyclists before you open the door.  That’s the message from the road safety team at Brighton & Hove City Council who say riders are at risk of being knocked off by car doors swung into their path. Cyclists are encouraged to cycle 1.5m away from parked cars where possible to avoid opening doors.

News from Martlets hospice of a great fundraising event...

DANCE LIKE A DIVA FOR MARTLETS Gather a group of fun friends together for a dance party marathon at the Concorde 2 and have a ball raising money for Martlets hospice on the afternoon of Sunday 26 November.

Chair of the council’s Environment, Transport and Sustainability Committee Cllr Gill Mitchell said: “It’s great that more people are taking to cycling but there are risks particularly for new riders who cannot always see the dangers. So we’re urging both drivers and cyclists to be mindful of the dangers of dooring.”

DJ Alex Baker will pump out the best anthems from the last five decades over the course of six hours. Go full-on retro with fancy dress if you like. Entry is £16 and you can also raise money through sponsorship. For further details see www.themartlets.org.uk/events, email clem. hunnisett@martlets.org.uk  or contact Clem on 01273 747455. www.themartlets.org.uk

Conor's Conundrum

FIVEWAYS FUN... WHERE IN FIVEWAYS?

A woman is sitting in her hotel room when there is a knock at the door. She opened the door to see a man whom she had never seen before. He said, “Oh I’m sorry, I have made a mistake. I thought this was my room.” He then went down the corridor and in the elevator. The woman went back into her room and phoned security. What made the woman so suspicious of the man?
