QUIZ QUESTION ONE:
Hecate (the queen of the witches) appears in which Shakespeare play?
fiveways Meet a Fiveways resident with many talents...
FIVEWAYS FACE – PHILIPPA STANTON Philippa Stanton is an actress, an artist and an author. Her first book, Conscious Creativity, is published in November and she will also be exhibiting her art at her open house at 64 Sandgate Road. What is your book about? It’s about building your creative foundation through process, experimentation and time. Focusing on the senses and a deeper awareness of our surroundings, it offers the key to the door with simple explorations prompting visual and visceral experiences which sit alongside memory and abstract thinking. New photography has been created to reinforce each lesson. You will also be having an artist’s open house again this year… Yes, on two weekends; the 17th/18th and the 24th/25th November, from 11am - 5pm. I love the Christmas Open House here, particularly because I open up a little earlier than most of them which means it always has the feeling of a gentle and cosy step into the Christmas season rather than a panicked one, plus visiting the Shed Installation has become an essential Christmas tradition for a lot of local families. I’ll have about 10 different artists showing their work here alongside mine, including ceramics by Holly Bell, paintings by Sophie Abbott and jewellery by Vivienne Ridley. It’s a great opportunity to buy beautifully handmade gifts from local artists, as well as grabbing a mince pie and some mulled wine. What sort of art do you create? I create quite a wide range of work which includes abstract paintings as well as my work as @5ftinf on Instagram where I currently have over 400k followers.
I sell calendars, cards, coasters, jigsaws and limited edition prints, all with my images on them. This year I have also moved into textiles, producing a range of hand sewn silk scarves as well as collaborating with fellow Fiveways artist, the upholsterer Emily Boo, who has rejuvenated a 1930s chair with velvet fabric in my own design. And of course I’ll obviously have lots of copies of my new book for sale. You’re also an actress. What sort of acting work have you done? All sorts really, but mostly theatre, although you might occasionally catch me in a Radio 4 play too! What do you do to relax? I love cycling…it always clears my head. I like to get out early and be on top of Ditchling Beacon or down on the seafront by about 8am. It’s so quiet and clear at that time of the day. I also love gardening…often in my pyjamas! “Conscious Creativity” by Philippa Stanton will be published by Leaping Hare Press on 15th November. MB Landscapes Creating Outdoor Spaces

fiveways There will be a nationwide commemoration of the First World War Armistice on 11th November...
REMEMBRANCE SUNDAY On 11th November there will be a nationwide day of commemorative events, “Battle’s Over”, marking the centenary of the end of the First World War and paying tribute to the millions killed or wounded in battle, and those on the home front who helped ensure freedom survived. At 6am 1,000 pipers around the world will commence the day’s commemorations with the traditional Scottish lament played at the end of battle – Battle’s O’er. At 6.55pm buglers will sound the Last Post at more than 1,000 locations, where at 7pm World War One Beacons of Light will be lit in a tribute signifying the light of peace that emerged from the darkness of four years of war. Then at 7.05pm 1,000 cathedrals and churches will ring out their bells in celebration of peace and more than 140 town criers will join in an International Cry for Peace around the world.
out and then the traditional silence is held at 11am. Lay preacher Geoff Harrington always takes this very moving service. Two years ago the young people researched all the names (only one could not be done) and produced a display of their evidence with pictures and a map, and this will be out for people to look at too. This year the church is being “poppy bombed” and parishioners have been busy knitting poppies.
Stanford Avenue Methodist Church will have a remembrance service when they will especially remember those who were connected to the church. They have two memorials in the church - one on the wall and the other on the font - as during World War Two the Methodist Church on Preston Road was bombed, so the two congregations joined together. Their names are read

fiveways You can find some great Christmas gifts at the Artists Open Houses‌
ARTISTS OPEN HOUSES CHRISTMAS FESTIVAL Brighton and Hove Artists Open Houses date back to 1981 when an artist from Fiveways, Ned Hoskins, opened his house to the public to view his work and that of a group of friends. Other artists in the area followed suit to form the Fiveways Artists Group and soon Artists Open Houses sprang up all over the city.

QUIZ QUESTION FIVE:
What is commonly known as the national fruit of India?
fiveways An annual film festival...
ANNUAL FILM FESTIVAL...CINECITY CINECITY – a citywide film festival - is returning from 9th to 25th November 2018, with the best in world cinema, a mix of premieres and previews, treasures from the archive and live cinema events. Highlights will include a 25th anniversary screening of Derek Jarman’s Blue, a reflection of his losing battle with Aids against the backdrop of a blue screen. The soundtrack will be performed live by Simon Fisher Turner with narration by poet and musician Black Sifichi. With a single static shot of the colour blue, the live sound and spoken word evoke powerful images and provide Blue’s narrative and emotional core. As the blue screen glows, the richly layered and evocative sound collage from Jarman’s longtime musical collaborator Simon Fisher Turner combines with the live voice to create a unique sensorial experience. Another highlight of this year’s festival is Lizzie, directed by Craig William Macneill. Chloë Sevigny stars as the notorious 19th century alleged murderess Lizzie Borden opposite Kristen Stewart as an Irish housemaid with whom she begins a secret romance. In The Kindergarten Teacher, directed by Sara Colangelo, Maggie Gyllenhaal gives a career-best performance as a kindergarten teacher who oversteps her bounds in a mission to help one of her students. Legendary Czech film-maker and Cinecity favourite Jan Švankmajer returns with Insect, which he reports will be his last film.

Mixing live action with his trademark macabre stop-motion animation, Insect is also punctuated with behind-the-scenes footage to reveal the mechanics of the animation and Foley effects. A customs agent who can literally sniff out contraband is the intriguing premise of Border, directed by Ali Abbasi, winner of Un Certain Regard at this year’s Cannes Film Festival and based on a short story by the author of Let the Right One In. Venues this year for CINECITY include Duke of York’s Picturehouse, the Sallis Benney Theatre in Grand Parade, Fabrica Gallery and The Basketmakers Arms in Gloucester Road. Although a car is not essential, to take advantage of our great rates of pay, it would be an advantage. We work from 7am – 10pm in three shifts, carers can work morning, lunch or evening shifts or a combination of all three. We are very flexible with hours and can fit round your commitments.

QUIZ QUESTION SEVEN:
Billy Corgan is best known for fronting which American alternative rock band?
fiveways Local personal trainer Liz Fulford gets a relapsed client back up to speed and ready for a half marathon...
MONTH ONE
TRAINING FOR A HALF MARATHON
To set the scene it was over 10 years ago when a new local personal trainer contacted us at the Fiveways Directory wanting to promote her fledging business. What transpired was a series of articles culminating in the editor running the New Forrest Half Marathon. Now 10 years on the challenge is whether the same can be done again with no running since and another 10 years on the clock!! Liz Fulford: I have been working as a personal trainer for over 12 years and met Tim 10 years ago when I trained him for the New Forest Half Marathon, followed by the London Marathon. Like many people I meet, Tim has found it challenging to be consistent with exercise due to injury and general life commitments. However, 10 years on and he has decided to challenge himself to run the Hampton Court Half Marathon in March 2019. My first session with any new client is a thorough consultation where we discuss past or present injuries or illnesses, stress factors, food consumption, sleep patterns etc. Physical examination includes checking resting heart rate, blood pressure and posture. Body fat, circumferential measurements and weight are recorded and some basic resistance exercises completed. This session enables us to discuss short and longer term goals for health, fitness, weight or whatever they want to achieve so that I can set them realistic and measurable targets. The plan for Tim is that within four weeks he should be running continually and comfortably for 30 minutes. He will be doing some core exercises at least twice a week to help reduce back strains and facilitate good posture during his running. My initial and main piece of advice for Tim is to invest in some new trainers. Running is tough on your joints, and with Tim’s previous issues of back and foot injuries he needs cushioned and supportive trainers. This in itself can be a minefield to figure out what is best. The most expensive trainers are not necessarily the ones for you. Take yourself to a running shop, and try out the trainers they advise before you buy. This will be the best investment you can make towards getting fit.

Tim’s % Body Fat…
Months Tim’s body fat measurement currently falls into the category of ‘obese’. In order for this to be within the ‘acceptable’ range he needs to reduce it to 25% or under.
Tim (the client): I feel a slight sense of trepidation embarking on another training programme to do a long distance run! However, call it a midlife crisis or whatever you like, but I really want to prove to myself I can still run a half marathon 10 years on from the last (and only) time I did. The trepidation I am experiencing seems to be around whether my body will hold up; I am prone to a bad back and have had a little trouble with one of my feet. That, combined with the memory of the torturous agony I seem to remember last time I embarked on the journey from totally unfit to relatively fit, and I am seriously questioning my sanity deciding to go through this again!! However, all that said, I also remember feeling stronger, fitter and generally happier and more productive in all areas of my life so maybe it doesn’t sound like such a terrible idea!! Time will tell…

fiveways Meet a local resident who’s written a book on his hero, David Attenborough...
LOCAL AUTHOR...
NATHAN JOYCE Nathan Joyce of Chester Terrace has just published his first book “A Celebration of David Attenborough – The Activity Book”. Tell us about your book... It’s a celebration of all things Attenborough with quizzes (some very tricky ones!), facts, quotes, and very silly games like Patternborough, where you have to design an animal print for him to wear. It’s a fun and highly addictive book that will make a great little Christmas present for 29 people of all ages. The publishers have printed it on eco-friendly paper and taken out corporate sponsorship of the Bumblebee Conservation Trust in honour of the book, so there’s a fitting environmental message to it. How did you come up with the idea? I was writing a Private Eye-style spoof annual on Donald Trump and I figured wouldn’t it be lovely to write a book about someone I don’t detest?! And so the first name that popped into me head was my hero: David Attenborough! How long have you lived in Fiveways? Four fantastic years. I was born in Brighton but moved away when I was three, so I’ve now happily returned to my roots. We discovered Fiveways by accident though, after getting lost trying to find a friend’s house. I’m so glad we made that mistake! What do you like about the area? The people, the parks and the Preston Park Tavern! We went to the Artists’ Open wHouses event this year, which was great. Also, my wife Tarah came up with the idea of putting on a Chester Terrace Street Party this year, which we held in June, after finding an old photo of a street party on the road for VE Day in 1945.
Have you got any more books planned? I certainly do! I’ve written four books this year, but this is the first one with my name on the cover. There will definitely be at least one more out next year, including a trivia book that aims to teach you everything you learned at school but have forgotten. Watch this space! “A Celebration of David Attenborough – The Activity Book” by Nathan Joyce is published by Pavilion Books priced £7.99.
It was wonderful meeting so many lovely people in our neighbourhood.

QUIZ QUESTION NINE :

What is the main seasoning of Goulash, one of the national dishes of Hungary?
fiveways Our book review from Gary Mepsted...
FIRST YOU WRITE A SENTENCE by JOE MORAN Viking, hardback, £14.99 “First You Write a Sentence” is the perfect companion to Francine Prose’s “What to Read and Why”, which I reviewed last month. Joe Moran’s superb, and timely, book takes an intriguing, and surprisingly exciting, journey into the power of the sentence, the building block for all forms of writing. Eschewing unnecessary pedantry or scholarship, Moran explains with passion and clarity how words, when used together, can create a synergistic energy and patterns of extraordinary complexity and beauty. He shows how good, in the sense of being precise and melodious, writing can fundamentally alter our view of the world and, indeed, ourselves. 33 This book is not meant just for the hardcore grammarian or etymologist, but for the general reader, and for writers seeking a greater understanding of their craft. In many ways “First You Write a Sentence” is a pretty depressing read. The book forces you to acknowledge the vast number of authors, many of them critically feted, who singularly fail to grasp the basic tenets of sentence structure and who produce prose which mitigates against the reader’s pleasure when engaging with the text. I recall a comment I heard recently from a well respected literary agent. They declared that beautiful prose is not enough to sell a novel. I would argue that if the prose is not beautiful a novel should, perhaps, be disqualified from publication. I applaud Moran’s plea for giving the written word the care and attention it deserves. Christmas is approaching at an alarming rate. Treat yourself, and others, to a copy of this wonderful and important book.

Originally published as one of Greene’s ‘entertainments’ this novel, set during the Blitz, deserves to have a much higher profile in the Greene canon. Arthur Rowe, a man with a distinctly shady past, visits a charity fete and correctly guesses the weight of the delicious cake which is being offered as a prize. From that moment on Arthur’s life is plunged into chaos as he becomes the target of sinister enemy agents who will, as the saying has it, stop at nothing to gain possession of said cake. Greene excels at mixing comedy with menace and he’s at the top of his game here. There’s elements of Buchan and a dash of Orwell to add spice to the story, but this novel is quintessential Greene: astute, disturbing, quietly brilliant.
