WELCOME TO THE FIVEWAYS DIRECTORY! There is so much going on in May that it’s difficult to fit everything into one magazine! We have the Brighton Festival and Fringe, as well as the Artists Open Houses, with many events in and around Fiveways. We also have a four-page pull-out from the Friends of Blakers Park, with news of their summer fair coming up in June, and an article from Young Cooks Club, who run after-school cookery sessions for 8-11 year-olds at One Church in Florence Road, encouraging children to eat healthily and to be adventurous with new foods. Remember there are local council elections on Thursday 2nd May and we may also be taking part in the European Parliament elections on 23rd May. Have a great month! QUIZ QUESTION ONE:

Which BBC television and radio presenter wrote an autobiography entitled ‘Banjaxed’?

fiveways A great new club to teach healthy cooking...

YOUNG COOKS CLUB... YCC is an after-school cookery club for children aged 8–11 (year 4–year 6) that launched in January 2019. The club’s leaders, Anna Haynes and Leona Vincent, felt that cooking was a skill very much missing in the local area’s clubs offering for kids and, having worked with some small groups at Downs Junior and Varndean schools, were keen to play their part in teaching young children to cook and eat healthy food. As parents themselves, they are both well aware of how healthy eating can become a battlefield. By teaching children to cook and enjoy the process they are giving them new skills and a sense of achievement as well as encouraging them to be adventurous with new foods. In this first term, they’ve made hummus and pitta bread, veggie chilli with homemade tortilla chips, a rustic cheese and tomato tart and hot cross buns with homemade butter and jam. The cooking is always healthy and most of all, tasty. Children are encouraged to try new flavours and textures, and each term focuses on new recipes with seasonal ingredients, enabling the children to develop their skills as the academic year progresses. When time allows, there is also a craft activity to go with the food such as making a container to take it home in. Leona says, “Our mission is to teach a range of skills such as pastry, safe knife skills and breadmaking and by doing so to empower kids with a knowledge about food and cookery to allow them to make sensible choices about their health in a fun environment.” The club currently runs on Tuesday afternoons during term time at One Church, Florence Road, for a maximum of eight kids and there are plans to add a second afternoon starting in September 2019.

They are also looking into the possibility of offering one-day workshops during the school holidays. For more information, email: youngcooksclub@gmail.com or sign up to the mailing list via the link on the website: www.youngcooksclub.weebly.com.

BRIGHTON FESTIVAL 2019: 4-26 MAY Featuring over 130 events with artists and performers from more than 20 countries, Brighton Festival 2019 is a space for contemporary expression from around the world, from 4 to 26 May 2019. This year’s guest director is Malian musician Rokia Traoré. As always, the Festival will include free and participatory activities for all ages, beginning with the annual Children’s Parade on Saturday 4 May - this year’s theme is folk tales. Without Walls bring a visually spectacular group of outdoor events - from Ghost Caribou’s magical illuminated animals to a day of family friendly performances on the beach level at the British Airways i360. Recognised cultural figures will bring new work. Authors Ben Okri and Jon Ronson discuss their latest publications; Grammy award winner Neneh Cherry performs songs from her new release, Broken Politics; and comedian Ruby Wax will teach us how to be human. At the Duke of York’s Picturehouse, you can see Yeelen (Brightness) a film made in Mali in 1987, with English subtitles. QUESTION THREE:

LOCAL FIVEWAYS BUSINESS www.stclairbuilders.co.uk

In which British city might you find the Bull Ring shopping centre?

fiveways This year’s Artists Open Houses Festival starts on 4th May...

ARTISTS OPEN HOUSES IN FIVEWAYS... The Artists Open Houses festival 2019 will take place in Brighton, Hove and beyond over four weekends in May, starting Saturday May 4th. Free to visit, the festival will see over 1,500 artists and makers opening the doors to their houses or studios to exhibit and sell their artworks direct to the public. The work of marginalised artists is an increasingly important strand of the Artists Open Houses festival. For the first time, the festival will be setting up an artists’ materials bank at St Luke’s Church in Brighton, to recycle artists’ materials to help excluded artists. The Artists Open Houses festival dates for 2019 are: May 4 & 5; May 11 & 12; May 18 & 19; May 25 & 26. Open houses in Fiveways include: Crying Shadows, Flesh and Bone: Brian Mander, a previous Best AOH winner, will be questioning the validity of seemingly innocuous ‘indigenous science’ and highlighting how such parochial knowledge can be murderously allied to witchcraft, superstition, ignorance and prejudice. One Church, Florence Road One-Six-Nine: Hiroko Lewis presents a brand new collection of fine works created by a diverse range of inspired artists. 169 Preston Drove Jane Palmer and Friends: Opening for the first time, a treasure trove of fine art. 239 Preston Drove Jehane’s Open House: Artwork by leading artists and bluebells in the garden! 89 Waldegrave Road Geoff Hands & Guests: Painting, ceramics, textiles and mixed media. 127 Havelock Road Art at 80: Affordable artwork, prints, cards and home accessories. 80 Havelock Road

Circus Extreme will be at the Preston Park Big Top, merging modern and contemporary styles with extreme stunts and classic clown escapades (10-19 May). At Preston Old Church (Preston Drove) there’s a beautiful adaptation of Macbeth by This is My Theatre, combining the play’s original language with traditional Scottish Gaelic, choral song and live music (4, 10, 15-18 May 7.30pm; 17-18 May 11.30pm; £10). If you like escape rooms, you might enjoy End Times: An Immersive Adventure at Nether Regions, 59a Clyde Road. Award-winning Fringe veterans 2headedpigeon have nuked the fourth wall to invite you into an interactive experience like no other in a secret bunker hidden beneath an ordinary Brighton home. Can you solve the puzzles, untangle the plot and save the world? (4, 11, 18 & 25 May, £15, age 10+) Fiveways comedian Katherine Atkinson will be at the Brighthelm Centre, North Road, in Mocking Birds. Join Katherine and Fatiha El-Ghorri for an hour of stand-up. Fatiha smashes Muslim stereotypes and challenges you to re-think what you think you know about Islam and Muslims, and Katherine offers up an acerbic, sideways view of motherhood... if she can be bothered. (Nonticketed, donations, 3-4, 22-25 May 8pm, at Junkyard Dogs: The Howler, Brighthelm Centre, North Road) To book tickets for Brighton Fringe events, call 01273 917272 or book online at brightonfringe.org

fiveways Our regular literature column from Gary Mepsted...

THE FRENCH LIEUTENANT’S WOMAN BY JOHN FOWLES, VINTAGE CLASSICS, PAPERBACK, £9.99 Not so much a book review as an author review this month. I recently became reacquainted with John Fowles through my daughter reading The French Lieutenant’s Woman as part of her dissertation. Fowles’ death in 2005 is, I think, only partly responsible for him having fallen off the literary radar. The brutal capriciousness of literary tastes and movements has completed the job and pretty much buried Fowles. He’s rarely mentioned or referenced now; he’s a novelist from the past and, so current wisdom has it, is probably better off remaining there. I hope this brief piece will encourage you to take a look at Fowles’ novels and shorter fiction. Your time will be well spent. Fowles’ reputation largely rests on his early output, his debut, The Collector (1963), its follow-up, The Magus (1965), and his masterpiece, the aforementioned The French Lieutenant’s Woman (1969). These novels defined, and profoundly influenced, British fiction in the sixties and beyond. Their diversity is astonishing, and rarely encountered now: a genuinely chilling and intelligent psychological thriller, a strange, epic, sexually-infused mind-game, set on the Greek island of Phraxos,

which spectacularly implodes after 600+ pages. I clearly wasn’t ready, or prepared for, The Magus aged 14, and vowed never to read another word written by Mr Fowles, a promise I’m glad I didn’t keep for I’d have been denied the inestimable pleasure of reading, and gasping in admiration at, The French Lieutenant’s Woman, Fowles’ postmodern meditation on the Victorian novel, with its double endings (there’s also a third false ending), and its sly deployment of metafiction, most obviously seen in the contents of Chapter Thirteen and the narrator’s sudden appearance in the railway compartment with Charles Smithson, the novel’s primary male character. The novel’s themes of feminism and associated gender issues give the book a piquant contemporary relevance. Sarah Woodruff, the French Lieutenant’s woman, is a superbly drawn character. The oft used criticism that Sarah is merely a plot device and lacks real substance through being viewed through the lens of the male characters doesn’t, for me at least, prevent her from being one of the greatest female characters in modern literature. Read the novel and decide for yourself. I can guarantee that you’ll not have read anything quite like The French Lieutenant’s Woman. It’s a novel that deserves revisiting every few years, and I regret leaving it so long before picking it up again. Gary Mepsted

fiveways Hannah from the Pet Shed gives her advice for pet owners...

PET PROBLEM CORNER... Following on from last month’s article about health problems, the most frequent question we get asked in the shop is: “How do I keep my pet’s teeth and gums healthy?” For small animals such as rabbits and guinea pigs, whose teeth constantly grow, a natural diet, rich in hay and natural chews is usually enough to wear teeth down. However dogs and cats no longer eat a completely natural diet so need a little help. Bad dental health leads to smelly breath and can often result in vet intervention. The average cost of a dental operation is over £300. Brushing: The most efficient way to keep on top of dental health is to brush your pet’s teeth. Dogs and cats should be trained early on to accept tooth brushing as part of their routine. The “brushes” that you wear on your fingertips are a good starting point but don’t work as well as brushes with softer bristles. Look for brushes with long handles and toothpaste designed for pets which is fluoride free. Dental Food: There is an assumption that dry food naturally cleans our pets’ teeth, but unfortunately this isn’t really the case. Kibble can remove plaque near the top of a pet’s teeth but your average dry food does not remove the plaque near the gum line where it does the most damage. Look for a specific dental diet or add Plaque Off, a granulated seaweed, to your current food. Canagan have also just brought out a dog kibble that contains Plaque Off and James Wellbeloved do an excellent Oral Health cat kibble that all three of my cats love! Treats and Chews: There are many dental chews and treats on the market but do be aware of the ingredients in the cheaper and popular options. Natural chews such as Lily’s Kitchen Woofbrushes are not only abrasive but contain active ingredients to promote your dog’s health. In the wild, animals chew raw bones, skin and fur which have a mildly abrasive texture. Raw bones and treats with fur are now available in all good pet shops which will also sell a wide range of other natural chews includ-

ing tendons, ears and antlers. Harvested after they are shed from the deer, antlers make a great humane and sustainable alternative to a raw bone. They are long lasting and odour free.

Finally, do ensure you attend regular vet appointments as they will check your pet’s teeth, particularly those less visible at the back of the mouth. Have a pet-related question?
