GENERAL BU

01273 530977 / 0

Amy Heley was elected in May as a Green Party councillor for Preston Park ward.

www.lewisbyardpl

Do you live in this part of Brighton? Yes, I grew up in the Fiveways area and still live here. Tell us about your background... I grew up in the Preston Park area, attending Downs, Stringer and BHASVIC. I’ve recently graduated university, where I studied Modern Languages. I got involved with activism in the Green Party in 2016, where I’ve been on the executive committee of the Young Greens of England and Wales, and now I’m a Councillor! I also work for a youth organisation called Our Future, Our Choice, which campaigns for more youth involvement in the Brexit debate and calls for a People’s Vote. What made you want to become a councillor? My interest in becoming a Councillor started in the Young Greens, where I realised the importance of getting young people elected, to tackle the huge issues of today such as austerity, the climate crisis and Brexit. Older generations have failed to address these problems, and I’m so passionate about getting more young people involved in politics, so I decided to put my money where my mouth is and run for election myself. I’ve also been inspired by politicians such as Caroline Lucas and Molly Scott Cato MEP in particular, who really showed me the impact that a single Green politician can have. What do you hope to achieve in the Fiveways area? During the local election campaign we heard from many residents about the local issues and problems, and top of that list is recycling and waste. The Green Party want to review the City’s contract with Veolia, so

This publication is made entirely possible through the support of its advertisers!! Support them where you can!!

particularly for young people in the area. On a city-wide level, I’m on the Housing and New Homes committee and the Environment, Transport and Sustainability committee, and I’m looking forward to getting stuck in. We have a lot of work to do ininfo@jtpugh order to achieve the target of a carbon neutral city by 2030, and www.jtpugh I’m excited to be a part of that.

fiveways This year’s Pride events begin on Sunday 7th July in Preston Park...

FREE PRIDE COMMUNITY DAY AND DOG SHOW The theme of this year’s Pride is “Generation of Love”, marking the 50th anniversary of the 1969 Stonewall Inn uprising that ignited the Pride movement. Photo © Chris Jepson

Pride events will celebrate the progress that has been made over five decades of campaigning while recognising that there is still more to be done. Events this year begin on Sunday 7th July in Preston Park with the free Pride Community Day and Dog Show (12 noon to 5pm). There will be loads of family entertainment, stalls, food and a bar. The Dog Show features awards for numerous categories (eg Cutest Puppy, Fancy Dress, Waggiest Tail, Sausage Catcher and Golden Oldie) as well as a glamorous catwalk doggy fashion show. You can enter via the Pride website. The annual Pride Community Parade and the Pride Festival itself are on Saturday 3rd August. This year’s Community Parade begins on Hove Lawns at 11am and will take a slightly different route this year due to roadworks – it will make its way to Preston Park via North Road and not down North Street or past the Royal Pavilion.

On Sunday 4th August is LoveBN1Fest – Pride Sunday in the Park - a community and family festival in Preston Park (1.30-9.30pm), which will celebrate everything Brighton & Hove and raise extra money for the Pride Social Impact Fund. The two-day Pride Village Party is on 3-4 August in St James’s Street and Marine Parade. For more information, visit www.brighton-pride.org.

QUESTION THREE:

What ancient weapon can be described as having a heavy head on a solid shaft and is used to bludgeon opponents? (there’s one in the House of Commons)

fiveways A new local group...

FATHERS WHO FRISBEE... FUN WITH A FRISBEE Over a decade ago, having just moved to Brighton, Fathers Who Football was born. Agility, athleticism and turn of pace may have left me, but FWF lives on! However, this time it’s not fun with a football, it’s fun with a frisbee! Fathers Who Frisbee is a new and exciting sporting activity based around the hugely popular sport of Ultimate. It’s been described as “a non-contact team sport that mixes the best features of sports such as football, basketball, American football and netball into an elegantly simple yet fascinating and demanding game”. So, why should you get involved? Whether you’re a sporty spice or a couch potato, Fathers Who Frisbee is for you. We aim to be an inclusive club that’s fun, friendly and sociable. It’s a great opportunity to be part of a team, develop a new skill and improve your level of fitness. We’ve partnered with Brighton Ultimate (www. brightonultimate.co.uk) who are one of the UK’s leading and most successful Ultimate Frisbee clubs. For a small fee, they will provide us with their expert coaching and rules of the game, and before you know it you’ll be throwing a hammer, scoober or thumber like a pro! So where and when does all this frisbee fun begin? It all starts on Sunday 7th July at 5pm in Preston Park for our inaugural frisbee throw-off. Joe from Brighton Ultimate will be coaching us through some basic throws, the principles of Ultimate and a game. Regular one-hour games will then be played every Sunday throughout the year. We’ll then cool down and rehydrate in The Park View pub! If you’d like to get involved, we’d love to welcome you to the club. For updates of club events, games and everything Fathers Who Frisbee, please follow us on our Facebook page using the following address: www.facebook.com/groups/fatherswhofrisbee. Malcolm Burden

fiveways Here are some lovely local gardens to visit...

MACMILLAN COASTAL GARDEN TRAIL There are 12 brand new gardens this year on the eighth Macmillan Coastal Garden Trail, which takes place over the weekend of 27th and 28th July. The annual event, organised by Geoff Stonebanks’ Driftwood Fundraising Group, raises money for the Macmillan Horizon Centre in Brighton, which offers local support for people affected by cancer. At least 22 gardens between Brighton & Hove and Seaford will be opening their gates. All the gardens will open between 11am and 5pm on Saturday 27th or Sunday 28th July, or both days, many serving home-made tea and cakes. Entry costs £3 per garden, or £8 for a day ticket. The following gardens are in the Fiveways area: 11 Rugby Road, BN1 6EB This little house is home to Adam and Dan, one pug and bundles of creativity. Now with a beautiful garden opening for the first time for Macmillan, it started as part of the Artists Open Houses and is a must-see on the Open House trail twice a year. (Open both days.) 31 Preston Park Avenue, BN1 6HG Lindy Craighall will be opening her garden for the very first time on the trail. She describes it as a rectangle

11 Rugby Road

located on four levels with some large well-established trees and brick walls on either side. The soil is very chalky and thin. The steps are a big feature, full of planted-up pots. Delicious home-made tea and cakes served too. (Open both days.) The trail website,www.macmillangardentrail.co.uk, has details of all the gardens on the trail, or you can get more information from Geoff Stonebanks on 01323 899296.

fiveways This sounds like a fascinating new booklet…

HISTORY OF THE FIVEWAYS SHOPS... I moved to the Fiveways area in 2003. A year or two later I found myself talking to a neighbour, aged 92 at that time, who had lived in the road all his life. It gave me the idea to try and find out how life had changed over the hundred or so years that the houses in the road had been occupied. I ended up talking to sixteen households, all ages and lifestyles, some having lived there most of their lives, some having come in more recent years. It was a fascinating experience which resulted in two booklets, in 2010 and 2011. After that I expanded my territory somewhat, round the corner into the shops. I imagined the shops must have started to appear as the houses did, and so it was. The first shops opened their doors in 1901. This time my information has come partly from archives and partly from the memories of people who have lived and/or traded in the area. This has resulted in another booklet, produced together with my friend and colleague Julius Smit. Below are a couple of short extracts of the history. It is interesting to look at the ways in which the shops have changed over the years, adapting to the needs of a growing residential population and the development of public (and private) transport. In 1901 there were only six shops, mainly providing food: 2 grocery and general provision stores, 2 butchers and a greengrocer. The roads north of Ashford Road had not yet been completed. The following year, 1902, was similar but with additionally a tearoom and a vet. The vet didn’t continue beyond 1904 so pet owners would have had to look further afield. On the other hand, by 1905 there were many more shops, now going beyond just food…

By the start of the First World War in 1914 there were 29 shops. By this time, almost all personal needs could be met in these local shops. There were the usual bakers, grocers, greengrocers, butchers and sweet shops – several of each. There were also a furniture dealer, a newsagent, 3 bootmakers, 2 estate agents, a bank (National Provincial) and a post office. There was now pretty well everything a family might need: food, heating, furniture, clothes, chemist and somewhere to save their money (if they had any to spare). The booklets are available for purchase at £4.99 from several shops in Preston Drove: Wigwam, Streakers Hair Studio and The Pet Shed, or direct from me, Rena Feld, at renafeld@btinternet.com.

BE A SUPERHERO WITH MARTLETS KAPOW!

RUN 5.30

Martlets are calling for local people to join in the family fun at their KAPOW! event – a superhero-themed 5k inflatable obstacle course - taking place at 11am in Preston Park on Saturday 14 September. Fun runners are encouraged to dress up as their favourite superhero and tackle a course of ten huge inflatables. Enter as a team or take on a personal challenge - there will be lots of super-friends to meet on the way. Everyone taking part will be helping to make a positive difference to lives of people needing hospice care in the Brighton and Hove area. Mum of two Katherine Spalding commented: “I completed the KAPOW! course with my two children last year and we had such brilliant fun together – from planning our superhero outfits to climbing up and then sliding down huge inflatables. It was a laugh from start to finish!  I would 100% recommend it and it’s all to support a fantastic local charity.” Tickets are available at www.themartlets.org.uk/kapow19 or call the team on 01273 747 455.  www.themartlets.org.uk

LETTERS TO MILENA PLAYWRITING

BY STEPHEN JEFFREYS

BY FRANZ KAFKA

Two, what might seem rather niche titles this month but, as I often say, take the plunge, the water might be just to your liking! I’ll kick off with Kafka’s “Letters to Milena” which I picked up as a result of a friend of my daughter’s using it as a key text for her dissertation. I’ve never been a fan of Kafka’s fiction and, if you feel the same, you might, like me, be enchanted by his letters to Milena Jensenská, whom he first met in 1920 whilst she was translating his works into Czech. Their two year relationship was tumultuous and infinitely complex. Milena was married and, therefore, physically unobtainable. Kafka’s feelings for her ran perilously deep and, it might be argued through reading the letters, were essentially destructive. Milena, too, suffered through her attachment to Kafka, but saw suffering as part of her great appetite for life and experience. Her ‘genius for living’, as Kafka describes it, gave him new life, but it exhausted him too. These wonderful letters display a warmth, humour and passion, and a disarming fluency which I’ve failed to discover in Kafka’s fiction. As a chronicle of impossible love, Kafka’s correspondence to Milena have no peer. They are frequently heartbreaking and will, no doubt, remind every reader of those tortuous times when they lost their heart to someone they could never have. Franz Kafka “Letters to Milena” Vintage Classics, paperback £8.99

My second choice is Stephen Jeffreys’ “Playwriting: structure, character, how and what to write”. Jeffreys was a playwright, screenwriter and teacher who died in 2018. His editor, Maeve McKeown, has gathered the material comprising this essential book on dramatic writing from material they began working on in 2012, much of it from Jeffreys’ playwriting masterclasses. As a playwright and creative writing teacher I’m always on the lookout for recommendable texts and Jeffreys’ book has quickly found its way to the top of the pile. Everything the playwright manqué needs to be aware of - and beware - can be found here, served up without the merest hint of didacticism. The layout, critical in a book such as this, is exemplary. All the bases are covered and the book’s appeal is broad enough to attract absolute beginners as well as seasoned playwrights. The author’s assured, and witty, presence as he guides you through the art and craft of writing drama is almost palpable. This is as close as one can get to actually being in the room with Jeffreys as he delivered one of his acclaimed workshops. A brilliant book and a mandatory purchase if you fancy yourself as the next Buffini or Bennett. Stephen Jeffreys, “Playwriting: structure, character, how and what to write”. Nick Hern Books, paperback, £16.99.

fiveways An update from a local volunteer group...

NEWS FROM THE FRIENDS OF HOLLINGBURY & BURSTEAD WOODS At our AGM in May we were joined by local community group HK Hedgehogs. They brought along their stand with equipment and leaflets and after our break for tea and homemade cakes they gave us a very informative talk about how we can help our hedgehogs whose numbers are sadly declining. One of the reasons for their falling numbers is impenetrable barriers preventing them from wandering between back gardens and finding enough food and most importantly a mate! In conjunction with Hedgehog Street and the British Hedgehog Preservation Society this local group are spreading the word that a simple hole in a garden fence would allow hedgehogs to roam freely from garden to garden: apparently they can explore five gardens or more in a single night! For more information visit www.facebook.com/hkhedgehogs. As well as working in the woodland glades to encourage greater biodiversity we have been doing some maintenance along the base of our hedgerows, clearing suffocating growth from around young trees that are still trying to get established, although the warm spell in April followed by the excessive amount of rainfall in June has seen our hedgerow trees put on a lot of growth. Similarly the wild flowers on our chalk insect banks in the meadow above the covered reservoir (adjacent to Ditchling Road) are flourishing due to this combination of early warmth followed by rain. Thanks to our volunteers’ help we have curtailed the spread of the more robust coarse grasses resulting in a riot of colourful flowers beloved by bees, wasps, hoverflies and butterflies. We also have a thriving population of beetles scurrying around amongst the roots of the wild flowers: good news for hedgehogs as this is

their favourite food, although they also eat caterpillars, earthworms and slugs. With help from HK Hedgehogs we hope to be able to establish if we have hedgehogs in the area of the woods or adjacent allotments. We meet on the first weekend of the month, alternating between Saturdays and Sundays (10:00 13:00) with a break for refreshments and a chat. We supply tools and training; all you need do is turn up in suitable footwear, and bring gardening gloves if you have them. If you would like to get involved we meet outside the green container just inside the southern gates to Roedale allotments, accessed via Golf Drive. For more information visit our website www.fhbw.org.uk. All welcome!

fiveways Great activities for the summer...

SCHOOL HOLIDAY ADVENTURES... Stand-up paddle boarding (SUP) - one of the fastest growing water sports in the world - is taking the UK by storm with a number of active and enthusiastic SUP communities springing up across the South East. Calum, co-director at Bike SUP Brighton (an adventure sports company based in Brighton) outlines why mountain biking and SUP combine to make the perfect adventure experience: “SUP has similarities to other water sports like surfing or kayaking, but it is much more accessible than either. Beginners can achieve a basic level of competence relatively quickly and it is suitable for a wide variety of ages. It’s incredibly relaxing once you get the hang of it! Mountain biking offers more of a thrill, as you get that rush of adrenaline by exploring and navigating flowing trails. Both activities give people the opportunity to invest in both their physical and mental wellbeing.” If you have tried SUPing you’ll appreciate the physical benefits - although it looks quite sedate you’ll still probably discover muscles you never knew you had! As a BSUPA instructor, Calum adds that “once you have got to grips with the basic paddle technique, SUPing can be a fantastic way to unwind, engage your core and escape the urban jungle.” Visitors to Sussex beaches may have seen SUPs out in the waves, but there is an abundance of inland SUP venues in Sussex too, including rivers such as the Arun, Ouse and Adur, with many routes providing a chance to escape and enjoy unspoilt beauty and an abundance of wildlife. First-timers will appreciate the accessibility, safety and views of the meanders at Cuckmere Haven, whereas more experienced paddlers can enjoy the fast-flowing fun of the rivers Adur and Arun. Mountain bikers are also spoilt for choice in the Sussex area, with great riding to be had at Friston and Bedgebury forest, not to mention the abundance of secret singletrack spots for more experienced riders.

With the numbers of SUPs set to increase again this summer, Calum notes that new paddlers should have a good understanding of the potential hazards, including wind and tides, and should consider doing a ‘ready to ride’ course with a BSUPA-recognised school. Bike SUP Brighton offer Paddle Board and Bike Adventure Days over the school holidays for 12-15 year olds as well as Paddle Board lessons for all ages and adventure days for groups.
