WELCOME TO FIVEWAYS!! We can’t really complain about the weather this summer has given us so far. There has been plenty of sunshine and some really hot days so far…the liability of anything I write here is that it is about 10 days before you read it, so fingers crossed. Hopefully as I finish this the clouds won’t move in and we won’t have record rainfall and flooding!! The start of July signifies the halfway mark of the year - time to review your plans and ideas you had in January for what you wanted this year to be. It’s too late to make a new beginning to the year but it isn’t too late to make a different ending!! We have our usual mix of local items for you to enjoy this month and we encourage you to get in touch if you are doing anything locally that you would like to publicise. Enjoy the July edition and have a great month!!

QUIZ QUESTION ONE:

Who is the dictator of Cuba?

fiveways An update on this year’s Take Shelter event...

TAKE SHELTER This May at Downs Junior School we opened our air raid shelters to the public. The event has left us with an incredible sense of the community; looking around the playground and seeing up to three generations of families surrounding us was overwhelming. There were stories and anecdotes being shared between strangers, new memories were made and older people were connecting with the younger generations to bring the experience of Brighton in war time alive. What a wonderful and historical legacy we have beneath our feet! It was emotional witnessing people’s reactions to their experience beneath the ground. There was shock, disbelief, people lost for words, intrigue and surprise. Grown men wept, children were quiet (!) and we were lucky enough to listen to our veterans comment on how accurate the shelter was. Soon this generation will be lost, as will the precious information that goes with it. Our job is to preserve these memories and stories to ensure that our children do not forget what has gone before them. Our work in the run-up to the Take Shelter events was never about generating money as a priority, it was about bringing our community together to create a lasting, authentic learning resource for the children.

However we were delighted to raise an astounding £5,000 for the school, and for the preservation of the shelter for years to come. Here are some things our visitors said: “Really superb, a great piece of history brought to life.” “Everyone young and old should see this. Amazing visit!”  “What a fascinating tour, really well researched and presented.” Barry Gooders, volunteer veteran for Downs Junior School’s educational programme, commented: “We really have felt privileged to help bring these memories back to life.” The team are already working on school tours next term and schools can contact us via the website - www.takeshelter.org.uk - if they want to book. We will be opening again to the public as part of Heritage Open Days on 9th September from 12-4pm, to offer an opportunity for those that didn’t get to experience the shelter this time. (Pre-book only via the website.) We are a volunteer-led organisation and rely solely on donations and fundraising. We are always keen to work with local businesses to ensure we preserve these wartime memories. We would also be delighted to hear from anyone with any artefacts that they would like to donate to our museum. Thank you. Sarah Fitzpatrick

Quality Kitchen Facelifts

On Tuesday 18th July, John Funnell of Brighton and Hove Archaeological Society will give a Bite-Size Talk at Brighton Museum on Roman Brighton and its Roman Villa, in celebration of the Festival of Archaeology 2017. The Roman villa was found at the bottom of Springfield Road in 1877 and partially excavated in 1915. The villa is dated to the 3rd century AD. The excavations revealed walls, mosaics and wall plaster, and a female burial. The Endeavour Garage was built on the site in 1962. Further excavations in 2003 found another burial, walls and a chalk-lined well. Other numerous finds have included pottery, brooches and a pair of statuettes now in Brighton Museum. This is now the site of the Wellend Villas flats. QUIZ QUESTION TWO:

Who was the dictator of Iraq?

fiveways News from Green Rooms...

FIVEWAYS GARDEN HIGHLY COMMENDED A Fiveways garden was ‘highly commended’ in an award ceremony earlier this year, organised by the Association of Professional Landscapers (APL). The garden in Havelock Road was given the award - the equivalent of coming second within its category - for projects with a value of under £20,000, at the APL Awards Showcase 2017 in central London in March this year. The garden project was undertaken following extensive building works at the rear of the house to create a new kitchen and open up access to the garden. Building contractors had already dug back the rough shape of the lower patio area, when Green Rooms Landscape & Gardens were taken on to create garden design drawings and complete the landscaping work and planting. The design brief was to create a family garden with an upper and lower patio to catch both the morning and evening sun. As the garden was very overlooked, privacy was crucial, and this was achieved through the use of horizontal timber screening to enclose the whole garden. Good low maintenance planting was essential to complete the design, and a focal point at the rear of the garden was created using a corten steel sheet with a rusted finish that was cut into a circle.

The garden was described by judges as being: soft and appealing to the eye, completed to a very high standard and a great transformation. If you are interested in a free garden consultation contact Green Rooms Landscapes & Gardens at info@green-rooms.biz, or call 01273 507555 for further information.

fiveways Our book review from Gary Mepsted...

“FIRST LOVE” BY GWENDOLINE RILEY GRANTA, HARDBACK, £12.99 Well, hello, it’s nice to be back. I’m not a betting man, but I would have been happy to put fifty quid on Gwendoline Riley not winning the Baileys Women’s Prize for Fiction. Most, if not all, literary prizes can’t resist novels which are big, brash, glib, issue-driven, preferably featuring exotic locations and, most important of all, clearly freighted with MEANING. Riley’s gorgeous novella - easily the most 15 accomplished of those books which reached the shortlist - never really stood a chance of snatching the prize. This disturbing and quietly devastating dissection of a poisonous marriage displays a remarkable deftness and subtlety in its execution, despite the hot vividness of its prose. Neve, a writer in her mid-thirties, is married to an embittered older man, Edwyn. ‘First Love’ is a recollection of the events and decisions which led Neve to become Edwyn’s wife. It’s as simple as that really, but therein lies the novella’s incandescent power.

Riley scrupulously examines a life shaped by a bullying father, a self-absorbed mother, unsuitable lovers and a series of bad choices which have led Neve into the trap of wedlock. There’s a marvellous exactitude to the writing, each word in each sentence is carefully, and perfectly, placed for maximum impact. There’s not a single sloppy line in the novel. I found myself reading ‘First Love’ a few pages at a time over a period of several weeks, in order to prolong the experience; this is definitely a novel to sip rather than gulp. Of all the books on the Baileys shortlist, ‘First Love’ is the one which truly deserves your attention.

“LETTERS TO A YOUNG WRITER” BY COLUM MCCANN BLOOMSBURY, HARDBACK, £12.99 I’ve just got space to sneak in a mention of Colum McCann’s fabulous book, ‘Letters to a Young Writer’, comprising fifty-two short essays on the professional, artistic and philosophical aspects of writing. Selfconsciously modelled on Rilke’s ‘Letters to a Young Poet’, McCann’s book is the best treatise on writing I’ve come across. He tells it like it is; no ifs, no buts. McCann, himself a novelist and teacher, unflinchingly examines the psychopathology of the author, and sets out clearly, and emphatically, those mental and emotional tools one requires to write well. If you’re considering taking up writing, a decent course and McCann’s book will provide the perfect start. Both Riley and McCann have proved the old adage that good things do come in small packages.   Gary Mepsted fiveways directory July 2017

QUIZ QUESTION THREE:

In which state was George W Bush governor before becoming President of the United States?

fiveways News from the Friends of Hollingbury and Burstead Woods...

WILDFLOWERS IN AND AROUND HOLLINGBURY WOODS In June we organised a Wildflower Walk to identify some of the many wildflowers that we see every time we work in Hollingbury Woods. We relied on the super knowledge of some group members as well as a large number of wildflower ID books. We look after two very different ecosystems: the woodland of Hollingbury and Burstead woods, and the more open area at the northern edge of Hollingbury Park, where we have created chalk banks to attract bees and butterflies. The bluebells were all finished but we found many 17 as other woodland species with fantastical names such Hoarehound, Jack-in-the-Hedge and Hedge Woundwort. The term “wort” is often found within wildflower names and signifies that it has had a medicinal use in the past. Many of these were just about to flower and it will be interesting to see them in their full glory. The warm south-facing chalk bank was in bloom already and had a very wide range of colours, from the beautiful pinks of Sainfoin and Ragged Robin through to the yellows of the Hedge Mustard and the clean whites of White Campion. We were unable to identify one plant despite our best efforts but BHCC Ranger Paul Gorringe came to our rescue and this inconspicuous flower, but much loved by the bees, is Common Gromwell, although not that common in the south east - for more info http://www.seasonalwildflowers.com/commongromwell.html We are building up a photo album of the wildflowers that we find in the area on our Facebook page. If you see anything we’ve missed then please send a photo to us and we’ll add it to the album. We all enjoyed this walk very much and plan to run it again next year. If you join the Friends of Hollingbury and Burstead Woods group you will get invited to this and our other events.

fiveways Welcome to the July edition of Fiveways Gardens...

IN THE GARDEN...JULY 2017 If you’re going to be away for a few days or more, your containers will stand a much better chance of survival if you move them to the most shady part of your garden. If you’ve got some way of standing pots in a tray of water, that’s great. As well as water, don’t forget to feed plants in containers – it’s easy to forget. Covering the soil with a mulch (I use horticultural grit, as it’s a fairly neutral colour) will also do a lot to reduce the watering needed. July’s a bit of a tidying and sorting month, dealing with the early flowering plants that are probably looking tatty by now and thinking of what to fill gaps with. The fresh green leaves that emerged in April and May are looking decidedly browner and crispier. Prime tasks are21 deadheading, watering and perhaps a bit of staking. In spite of the walls and fences around here, the wind always seems to whip up mischief, and a bit of discreet staking can make a big difference. Cutting some herbaceous perennials back, removing tatty, tired leaves, is often worth it. It lets in plenty of light and encourages a fresh flush of new green leaves, which really freshens up the garden. Plants that will respond well to this include lots of perennials that flower early in the season, such as most hardy geraniums and delphiniums. Feed any of the herbaceous plants that you cut back. In terms of filling gaps, you may find you need a bit more structure and height in the border. Among my favourite shrubs are Japanese tree peonies and I’ve finally found a local nursery that supply a range of them. South Downs Nurseries are on the A273 just outside Hassocks. They had about half a dozen varieties when I was out there about a month ago and were very well priced too. For more variety, a good mail order option is Kelways in Somerset. Plant now for amazing flowers next spring. Given a sunny-ish spot and importantly, shelter from strong winds, they’ll give 3-4 weeks of pleasure with their amazing flowers next April-May.

Rose ‘Bobbie James’

They’ve great foliage too, so I think they earn their place in our little gardens. Mock orange, or Philadelphus, and Weigelas flowered heartily in June, and if you haven’t already, prune them now. Happy gardening. Lisa

fiveways An update on what’s happening at Coachwerks...

COACHWERKS IS BACK IN ACTION Coachwerks is a community space in Hollingdean that has something for everyone – whether you want to discover new music at a Saturday gig, get your weekly shopping from the vegan wholefoods store, or relax in the sun with an ale from the micro-brewery, Coachwerks is the perfect spot. Having closed temporarily for renovation over the winter, the café, pub and restaurant is now back in action and open to the public four days a week. We now serve proper coffee, a selection of teas and cakes, as well as kombucha, matcha lattes and our own serotonin-boosting smoothies – designed to get your positivity flowing! Some of you will know Hail Seitan’s Rabbit Food Thursdays – every Thursday evening we host a two-course 25 vegan meal and rotate the menu every eight weeks to keep it fresh, seasonal and exciting. Because we believe waste should be actively avoided, Rabbit Food is on a booking only basis – email info@fork-the-system.com to book a table and/or ask for menus. We now also have a beautiful beer garden filled with plants where you can come and chill outside in the sun with food and a drink, sourced ethically and sustainably. Everything on offer at Coachwerks is vegan – the shop even sells cashew ice cream!

fiveways The next of our series of recipes by local Kitchen Coach, Sarah McLoughlin...

STRAWBERRY CITRUS CAKE This super easy cake with a refreshing citrus bite is just perfect served with English strawberries and enjoyed in the garden! Ingredients 175g margarine/butter 175g caster sugar 175g self raising flour 1 teaspoon baking powder 3 medium free range eggs 1 lemon, zest 1 lime, zest 27

For the drizzle: 4 tablespoons caster sugar Juice from the lemon and lime 300g strawberries

When the cooking time is up, test that the cake is done by pushing a metal skewer into the centre; if it comes out clean, it’s done!

While the cake is still in the tin, pierce all over with a skewer and spoon the lemon/lime drizzle all over the cake.

Leave the cake in the tin until it is cold before turning out and placing it onto a serving platter.

Mix the 2 tablespoons of icing sugar with a tiny dash of water and mix until smooth and runny enough to drizzle across the cake.

Finish by decorating the cake with sliced strawberries and a few mint leaves.

Serve with some freshly whipped cream and the remainder of the strawberries.

2 tablespoons icing sugar Method: •

Grease and line a 1 kg/2lb loaf tin and preheat the oven to 170C/160C fan assisted oven.

Place the margarine, caster sugar, lemon and lime zest into a bowl and beat until pale and creamy. Add the eggs, flour and baking powder; mix until all the ingredients are combined.

Chop about 6 of the strawberries into small cubes.

Spoon half the mixture into the lined loaf tin, spreading into the corners of the tin. Sprinkle over half the chopped strawberries and spoon the rest of the cake mix over the top; sprinkle over the rest of the chopped strawberries evenly (they sink into the cake as it cooks).

Bake for about 45 minutes or until a skewer inserted into the cake comes out clean. If the cake is not cooked but browning on top cover with foil and pop back into the oven. To make the drizzle mix the juice of the lime and lemon with the 4 tablespoons of caster sugar and set aside.

fiveways Hi. I’m Nelson, a four-legged Fiveways resident. I am a black Miniature Schnauzer, now a year old...

NELSON’S COLUMN...HOLIDAY TIME I love going on holiday - the new friends, the new smells and the increased chances of a stray sausage falling my way - but I can find it rather stressful, particularly in the run-up when routines are all out of whack and everyone is getting excited. • Travel water bottle - sightseeing is thirsty work I get excited too but I don’t always understand what is • Seatbelt restraint/harness or crate - better safe going on. than sorry As an increasing number of humans take us pets on holi• Bed and/or blanket - the smell and feel of home can day and as holiday companies wake up to this fact and be very reassuring offer more pet-friendly holidays, we need to ensure that our pets’ needs are taken into account.

Toys - for those relaxation moments

Imagine, for a moment, being your dog. He is probably asking himself what is going on. Why is everyone so excited, what do the big suitcases mean, and 35 most importantly, what about me? Find time to reassure your pet and use the following list to ensure you are prepared with all the essentials for a great holiday.

Treats and chews - well it s a holiday!

Natural calming/travel sickness remedy - because we can get overexcited.

Food - stock up on his normal food so you don t run out when you are away

Stake and longline - the feeling of freedom without the worry!

Travel bowls for food and water - collapsible for easy storage

But above all remember to enjoy your holiday and quality time with the WHOLE family! Nelson was talking to Hannah James, dog translator and owner of... The Pet Shed, 100 Preston Drove, BN1 6EW. Tel: 01273 554164

fiveways Keep the beach clean...

TAKE TWO MINUTES TO KEEP THE BEACH CLEAN Every summer thousands of visitors flock to Brighton & Hove, with many heading to the beach. But sadly, after a sunny weekend, it’s not unusual for several tonnes of rubbish to be left strewn across the city’s beaches. Beach litter costs the council thousands of pounds in cleaning costs. But what if beachgoers took a couple of minutes out of their day to pick up rubbish?  The difference could be dramatic. With this in mind, Brighton & Hove City Council’s Seafront Team has joined the #2minutebeachclean campaign, alongside several local businesses. It’s a simple campaign to provide beachgoers with the opportunity to ‘do their bit’ for the beach they love, encouraging them to spend two minutes picking up litter before beginning their journey home. People taking part are encouraged to take photos of themselves cleaning the beach and upload them to the social media sites using the hashtag #2minutebeachclean, increasing awareness of the fate of the beaches and oceans.

37

Seafront Officer Charles Branson explained why he was keen to launch the project in Brighton & Hove: “Growing up on the beaches of Cornwall, I have had it instilled in me to care for the coastal environment, and I find it quite upsetting to see the state of the beaches of Brighton and Hove after a sunny weekend. The city has so many passionate, environmentally conscious local people but sadly there are many more who aren’t so diligent and are unaware of the potential harm to other beach users, marine wildlife and the environment. We hope #2minutebeachclean may go some way in reducing the impact of our annual summer beach litter crisis and that we as a city can provide more stations as the summer progresses.” Four distinctive #2minutebeachclean A-boards have been placed along the busy seafront, with local businesses as official ‘guardians’. The stations hold several litter pickers for public use and a supply of standard reused supermarket plastic bags which can be dropped into any council waste bins. The A-boards can be found at the Seafront Office (between the two piers, in King’s Road Arches), the World Cetacean Alliance (just east of the Palace Pier), Rottingdean, and the i360. Local businesses interested in becoming a guardian or sponsoring a #2minutebeachclean station can contact Charles at the Seafront Office on 01273 292716. For more information about the #2minutebeachclean campaign visit: www.beachclean.net. fiveways directory July 2017

Injury, extreme weather, malfunctioning equipment, or sometimes a combination of all three. The plausibility of excuses is often questionable, but are invariably due to third party failure (never one’s own fault). The ultra-competitive - these types are easily identifiable by consistently positioning themselves half a length ahead of the pack at all times, even on a trip to the supermarket. They can generally recite the split times of every race they’ve ever done. Ultra-competitive individuals like to indulge in a bit of e-stalking to research the sporting form and history of their rivals. The socialite - the opposite of the ultra-competitive personality. Likes to participate as much for the social as the sporting benefits. The socialite is largely uninterested in gadgets or kit, and much more interested in getting to know their sporting companions, having a good chat and planning the coffee and cake afterwards. Which am I? I couldn’t possibly say! FIVEWAYS FUN... WHERE IN FIVEWAYS?

Where in Fiveways was this photo taken?

The Smith family is a very wealthy family that lives in a converted windmill. One morning, Mr. Smith woke up and saw a strawberry jam stain on his new carpet. He figured out that everyone who was there that morning had a jam sandwich. By reading the following excuses, figure out who spilled the jam.
