NEW BUSINESS COMES TO BRIGHTON 01273 530977 / 07554750499 IF YOU LOVE DOGS READ ON... Mark, I hear you’re bringing a new business to Brighton that will interest pet owners and particularly dog lovers. Tell us more.
www.lewisbyardplastering.co.uk
Yes, my brother has been running a successful dog boarding business in the Midlands for some years. Living locally, I know there are so many dog owners around Brighton & Hove who want to lead a more flexible life and need a trusted home for their precious pet while they’re away. Does that mean you will be looking for people to host these dogs in their own homes? Yes, we are keen to hear from people who have a secure home with space, and most importantly, love dogs. What sort of person would fit the bill? You may be retired or working from home, and you may already have a sociable or good natured dog who would enjoy the company. Pet lovers who’ve had a dog in the past often, in our experience, enjoy the chance to host a dog on a flexible basis. What would potential home boarders need to do? Firstly, get in touch with us and we can answer your questions. Depending on how many dogs you look after, you may need a licence. We are experienced in working with the Councils and will guide all dog boarders through the regulatory process. The website and contact details are below and you are free to call any time with questions

fiveways A writing competition for children and young people…
“IF I DON’T SPEAK, WHO WILL?” ALFRED HUBERMAN Holocaust Memorial Day, 27th January 2020, marks 75 years since the liberation of Auschwitz-Birkenau. Brighton & Hove resident for 65 years and Holocaust survivor Alfred Huberman dedicated his life to bearing witness to the Holocaust in the hope that his own harrowing story would help future generations learn from the lessons of the past, and to show how genocide is a process which starts with hatred, prejudice and discrimination. 11 Hailing from a close-knit Polish-Jewish family of over 50 members, only Alfred and one sister survived the concentration camps. One of the child Holocaust survivors brought to Britain at the end of the war, by 1946 he was living in Hove. He worked as a master tailor in Brighton, married a local girl and had three children. Alfred died in 2011, but his legacy is The Alfred Huberman Award to encourage young people to learn the lessons of the Holocaust and to ensure that its horrors should never be forgotten.
The writing can take the form of a short essay, letter, poem or creative writing (max 500 words). Entries should demonstrate understanding of the Holocaust; how the story impacts on them; and the hopes they have for the future. There are two categories: primary school children aged 8-11 years & secondary school children aged 11-18 years. Prizes are awarded for the most striking pieces of writing. Closing date 30 June 2020. Entries accepted from schools and individuals. Further information: http://alfredhuberman.com/ or email info@ldhp.org.uk

CARDIAC PATIENT INVOLVEMENT GROUP
COUNCIL TO CONTINUE WITH MANUAL WEEDING
We are a group of patients who have had experience of the Cardiac Centre – either as an in-patient or an out-patient, either cardiology or cardiac surgery. New members will be very welcome. We meet every three months in a relaxed and informal environment (alternate Mondays and Wednesdays 5-6.30pm) to: •
•
Provide an opportunity for staff working in the Cardiac Centre to hear patients’ views, for example reviewing patient information and advice on feedback questionnaires and focus groups Provide an opportunity where patients can raise issues that are important to them, for example information to patients on waiting lists, privacy and dignity issues
What you have to say is important to us and as a result of our discussions we can make changes to benefit other patients. If you would like further information, please contact: Sarah Young Nurse Consultant Cardiology Tel: 01273 696955 ext 7850 Email: sarah.young@bsuh.nhs.uk
Brighton & Hove City Council’s Environment, Transport and Sustainability Committee has agreed to end the use of glyphosate by its Environmental Management services with immediate effect, other than in exceptional cases to kill invasive plant species or tree stumps. Glyphosate is the world’s most widely sold weed killer, but many experts believe it causes cancer. The removal of weeds in parks and on hard surfaces will instead be undertaken manually. An additional six staff will be employed during the growing season and information from a trial in 2019 will mean that weed removal will be better planned in 2020. The committee will review this approach in autumn 2020 and a survey will be done to seek the views of residents. Theresa Fowler, councillor for Hollingdean & Stanmer, said: “I am really pleased that we’ve all agreed to reduce pesticides. I’ve heard of complaints from people that have been worried because their dogs have been poisoned from sniffing the weeds that have been sprayed and I’ve actually enjoyed walking up my road now, looking at all the weeds and the flowers that pop up from nowhere.”

What is the dot over a lower case i or j called?
fiveways Local person...
LOCAL PERSON... FIONA EDWARDS OF FOUND CAFÉ Fiona Edwards is the owner of Found Café – a new vegetarian/vegan café in Preston Drove. Why did you decide to open a vegetarian/vegan café? We come from a background of designing and realising event and festival spaces linked with the environmental protest movement. An integral part of this has always been thinking about the food we eat and its impact on the environment. We live above the café and so when the space became available we thought it would be an excellent opportunity to offer the local community in Fiveways/Preston Park a new, interesting and welcoming space providing delicious vege/vegan food whilst showcasing local artists’ work. We have teamed up with a local chef and friend who we have previously worked with in our festival days, who shares the same ethos and has experience in a range of culinary styles. What sort of food do you serve? We offer a good range of traditionally inspired breakfast and brunch items often with a twist.
We always have a wide range of cakes and pastries which change throughout the week. Our coffee is organic and carbon neutral supplied by local roastery Red Roaster. As well as our house single estate Costa Rican, we also offer freshly ground Swiss method decaf and guest roasts. Our delicious range of loose leaf comes from Brew Tea. We make our own house chai blend, and fresh juice. All of our menu is available vegan or vegetarian and new items are being added regularly. What is your most popular meal? Eggs Bang Bang - fried eggs on sourdough, spiced up with tangy hoisin, spicy sriracha, coriander, spring onions, crispy fried onions and pickled carrots. Which artists’ work are you exhibiting? Currently we have Clair Letton and her imagined worlds, and Sarah Walpole with her abstract pastel canvases, and myself and my mirrors. What are your future plans? We’d like to continue building up our base of regulars, expand and change the menu seasonally, specialising in homemade cordials as the spring arrives. We will be hosting regular pop-ups in the evenings with visiting chefs, and encourage the use of the space out of hours for book clubs, sewing circles and group meetings. Watch this space! Found Café is at 91a Preston Drove (near Balfour Road) and is open from Tuesday to Friday, 8am-4pm, and weekends from 9am-4pm. For more information, visit Found Café on Facebook.

fiveways A two-day showcase at the Brighton Waldorf School in Roedean Road...
BRIGHTON WALDORF SCHOOL SHOWCASE CELEBRATES PUPILS’ SUCCESSES Helping to create and nurture inspiring futures is the message from the Brighton Waldorf School as it opens its doors to prospective parents and pupils at its inaugural two-day Showcase of Pupil Performance and Academic Achievements on Thursday 23rd and Friday 24th January between 1pm and 4pm. Following the success of this year’s great GCSE results and recognition for the positive Ofsted improvements, the school is hosting the interactive Showcase to give pupils and staff a platform to demonstrate, exhibit and celebrate the strong improvements, new classes, initiatives and creative channels that have grown and excelled over the last year. School Director Damian Mooncie said: “The Showcase 19 will be a mix of original pupil performances of poems, songs and drama, plus Curriculum Exhibitions alongside bookable ‘live’ Classroom Tours. We believe the event will be the perfect way for the school - its teachers and pupils - to share their Waldorf education experiences and give visitors an opportunity to see the flow of intellectual and creative stimulation and enrichment within our school and its curriculum.” Each day Damian will be delivering a ‘Discover Waldorf Education’ Talk and Q&A session. There will also be two special performances at the end of each day - The Crucible (Thursday) and A Christmas Carol (Friday).
Damian added: “Through the Showcase, we hope visitors, prospective parents and pupils see how happy, enthusiastic and animated our pupils are at sharing their school experiences and educational journeys - and at showing their school and talents at their absolute best.” To find out more about The Brighton Waldorf School, get more details on the Showcase and its activities, to book on to a ‘live’ Classroom Tour during the Showcase or to arrange a general visit, please contact: The Reception Team on tel: 01273 386300, visit www.brightonwaldorfschool.org/ contact-us or email: enquiries@brightonwaldorfschool.org

QUIZ QUESTION SEVEN:
“Amazing results, saved me £300, thank you!” Mrs B. Hove. Which insects get their name from an ancient superstition that they crawl into the ears of sleeping people?
fiveways Mike Doodson has written a short history of Glovers Yard in Havelock Road...
GLOVERS YARD... If you’ve ever walked along Havelock Road you may have noticed a building on the west side of the street at numbers 121-123 called Glovers Yard, which houses a couple of businesses and homes.
21
Photo from the James Gray Regency Society Collection
Glovers Yard is so named because from 1955 to 2002 it was the home of Cornelia James Ltd, glove makers By Appointment to the Queen. Cornelia James was born Cornelia Katz in Vienna in 1917 and came to Britain in 1939. (Her son, Peter James, is the well-known novelist, who bases many of his crime stories in Brighton.) Cornelia set up her glove making business initially in Davigdor Road in Hove, in 1947, in the same year that she was asked to make gloves for Princess Elizabeth for her wedding to Prince Philip. Cornelia James died in 1999 but her business continues in Ripe in East Sussex, where they have continued to make high quality gloves since 2010. The buildings at 119 to 125 Havelock Road were designed in 1883 by a local architect, Thomas Henry Scutt, when the area between Preston Park and what is now Fiveways was first being built on. The design included the double fronted house at No. 119 and the narrower house at 125 intended to be a foreman’s cottage. Numbers 121-123 were to be a builder’s yard, complete with stables for three horses out back, a timber store and plumber’s workshop on the ground floor, and joiner’s shop and paint shop on the first floor. Despite this design, the first business operating out of 121123 Havelock Road was actually a laundry – the Sunlight Sanitary Laundry Ltd, one of nearly 200 laundries in Brighton and
Hove in the late 1890s. A photo from 1897 in the Regency Society James Gray Collection shows the back of the building when No. 125 was the last completed building on Havelock Road, clearly showing the words “Sunlight Laundry” painted on the roof. Sunlight Laundry occupied the premises from 1891 to 1927. By 1930 the laundry had gone, and a building business took over the place. Walter Saunders was there from 1930 to 1938, and when he retired W. A. James, another builder, took over. And as described above, in 1955 Cornelia James took over, making gloves! So now you know why it’s called Glovers Yard, though it could have been called Laundry Yard! Mike Doodson, Southdown Road fiveways directory January 2020

fiveways Al-Anon provide support for anyone affected by someone else’s drinking…
AL-ANON FAMILY GROUPS Al-Anon Family Groups provide support to anyone whose life is, or has been, affected by someone else’s drinking, regardless of whether that person is still drinking or not, with currently over 700 meetings around the UK and Ireland and over 24,000 meetings worldwide. Lisa, 49, shares her story: “I met my husband when I was 20 years old. There was an instant attraction and within a month of meeting we were living together and inseparable. I knew he liked to have a drink, but I had no idea what an alcoholic was. “On our wedding day, he was hung-over even though I had pleaded with him not to drink the night before. 25 I worried every time he wasn’t home when he was supposed to be – “Is he dead?” I would ask myself. It got worse when I got pregnant; when our first child was born, he disappeared for almost four days. After our second child was born things got even worse; he was hardly ever home. “When the children cried for his attention, he would put on earphones and turn the volume up. It was so awful that I began to realise I was happier when he wasn’t there, so finally I asked him to leave and he did!
With the help of Al-Anon meetings I am improving. I have begun detaching from responsibilities that are not mine. “With the help of Al-Anon meetings I am improving. I have begun detaching from responsibilities that are not mine. For almost 30 years I have carried the responsibility that it was my fault the children were not raised by a decent father. My children ended up having a good life, and that was thanks to me. It’s hard to feel comfortable
with that, but it is necessary for me to let go of blame, both of him, and of myself.” There are meetings at several venues in Brighton including the Friends’ Meeting House, the Brighthelm Centre, Cascade Coffee Shop in Baker Street and the Salvation Army hall in Park Crescent Terrace, near The Level. You can find your nearest meeting at www.al-anonuk. org.uk/find-a-meeting/ or call our free and confidential helpline on 0800 0086 811 (10am-10pm).

fiveways Join woodland volunteers and get more exercise...
NEWS FROM THE FRIENDS OF HOLLINGBURY & BURSTEAD WOODS If one of your new year’s resolutions is to get out in the fresh air and do more exercise then we have the answer - come and join our volunteers working in your local woodlands. Spending time outdoors, especially in woodland, is also said to be good for the soul and can help with depression too. You don’t need any particular woodland skills, but any experience you have can be put to good use, and we have tasks suitable for everyone. We supply tools and training and always stop for a mid morning refreshment break 29 and a chat. Recent tasks have included glade clearance, hedge maintenance and removing pernicious plants from the chalk banks to help the downland wild flowers so beloved by our bees and butterflies. We also regularly tackle litter and illegal dumping of waste, which in some areas of the woods is very prevalent. To try and deter this on our boundary with Hollingbury Rise West we planted a hedge a few years ago, but unfortunately this was continually trampled down by the fly tippers leaving builders’ rubble, bottles, old Christmas trees and garden waste. We decided therefore to use our funds, generously donated by our supporters, to purchase some chestnut paling fence to protect the replacement hedging. To erect the fencing along the entire length of Hollingbury Rise West in one session proved to be a task requiring extra volunteers. We therefore called upon the help of Ranger Neil Doyle’s Friday team, affectionately known as the Nomads as they move around from one green space to another supporting the many nature conservation groups we have in our city. Hopefully the hedge will now thrive and the fruits of the hawthorn, blackthorn, holly and wild roses will help sustain the birds and small mammals through the harsh winter months. If the new fence does its job we hope to plant some more wild daffodils in front of the hedge.
If you do decide to join us we have other tasks lined up, including path maintenance, dividing up the congested clumps of snowdrops so that they can be replanted in other areas of the woods, and we are also hoping to put up some bird boxes in the northern hedge. Remember, no gym membership fees to pay, just a nominal membership subscription if you decide to join us after a trial work session. More information on our website: www.fhbw.org.uk

fiveways Our regular article on the literary world from Gary Mepsted...
SO, YOU WANT TO WRITE A NOVEL? Another year dawns and, for many, I suspect their New Year resolution to finally write that - apply expletive - book is now bearing fruit. From my decades of teaching experience, the beginning of a new year is the most popular time to kickstart a writing career. For those folk currently sweating over their laptops the following might prove salutary. My writing partner and I were recently engaged in a meeting with a major London literary agent. The coffee was wonderful, the content of our conversation much less so. What I took away from our encounter is that now, 31 dear writer, is not the best time to be embarking upon the writing of a novel (non-fiction is a different game) with the environment being so tightly proscriptive. There are an increasing number of hoops to be jumped through when the poor novelist is unaware of the existence of said hoops, and/or their size and location. Acquisitions committees sit, Caligula-like, in judgment of the novels they are required to pass sentence on. The rules applied are arcane, draconian and, frankly, stupid beyond belief. Novels shouldn’t cross genre, have forewords, afterwords or prologues; they shouldn’t be too original. Genuine originality is a hard sell. A novel can be commercial but it’s the wrong kind of commercial, the noncommercial commercial. Those in charge will also bring their own ethical and moral stances into the equation, which can further muddy the already filthy waters. As William Goldman - novelist, playwright, screenwriter - famously said, ‘No one knows anything’. This dictum certainly seems appropriate for those individuals and committees responsible for selecting which novels will live and which won’t. Agents and publishers are always looking for reasons to reject, rather than accept manuscripts, and their reasons for rejection can very often appear spurious or mad. When my ex’s novel was being sent out and returned we appeared to be inhabiting an alternative reality.
BELLS WALL & FLOOR TILING 01273 561160 07708584220
GT
So, given the admittedly depressing statements above, all a novelist can, and should, do is to write a novel they’re truly passionate about and wholly committed to, and not give a second’s thought as to its ultimate fate. Live, eat, sleep and breathe your book. Make it the best book you can and be crazily proud of it. When it’s done, send it out and start a new novel. During our meeting we were informed that ‘95% of all submissions are cr*p’. Do make sure your novel is part of that blessed 5%. Good luck! Gary Mepsted
