How many of Snow White’s seven dwarfs have names ending in the letter Y?

fiveways A great place to buy gifts...

LOCAL SHOP – LIVING AT FIVEWAYS Nicky Priddle runs Living at Fiveways, a gift and homeware boutique at 296 Ditchling Road. How did you come to run your own shop? Following a 13-year flying career with Virgin Atlantic I started a family and the lack of a trendy gift shop at Fiveways prompted me and my husband to open a new business in 2004. What do you most enjoy about running the shop? I enjoy being part of the local community, meeting mums, children, dads, grandparents and teachers. What sort of products can we buy? We lovingly source gifts, clothing, jewellery and accessories for the individual and the home from all over the world, mostly for women but we’re popular with the husbands and dads for special occasions too. What’s your best-selling item? Our best selling items are jewellery and scarves at present, but handbags and affordable clothing are popular all year round.

What do you like to do when you’re not working? Life is always busy with two teenage children, but I find time to cook and love to entertain guests at home or dine out. I enjoy the gym and also practise yoga. Occasionally I get a chance to horse ride but that’s more my daughter’s hobby now than mine unfortunately. Come along and experience Living at Fiveways. For more information, visit www.livingatfiveways.co.uk.

An exciting new event for all cyclists...

MARATHON CYCLE RIDE

A new 50km mass participation bike ride, BM Ride, will take place on Sunday 14th April as part of the Brighton Marathon Weekend.

Both Nurseries OFSTED Outstanding

It won’t be a race but an opportunity to enjoy the city’s streets together, traffic-free, with a minimum speed. The ride will take place early in the morning, before the 10K and the marathon, and will mostly use the existing marathon road closures, which will be set up earlier. There will also be an additional 8km loop to the east of the city. The event is targeted at around 1,600 riders of mixed abilities and will start and finish on Hove Lawns. fiveways A new website for local residents and businesses...

KNOW BEFORE YOU GO…. We think we know what you guys are thinking before you use a business for the first time. How do I know they will do a good job? Will they overcharge me? What if they mess it up and don’t put it right? Lots of natural fears kick in before stepping boldly into the unknown and using a business for the first time. The above factors are why word of mouth is such a valuable thing. A positive word from a neighbour or a family member can often make the difference as to who you choose to do a job for you but these golden nuggets of information aren’t always readily available. Well, the above factors combined with these statistics…

91% of people have used and many use

regularly online reviews when thinking about using a service or buying a product.

86% of people will trust an online review as much as a personal recommendation.

61% of people form an opinion on a business

..have led us to the development of a new website just for you – the readers of our magazines!! On this website you will be able to read reviews of local businesses that are advertising in our magazines. Each review will be verified as genuine by phone and email and will have been added to the site by a local resident. In addition to reviews each business on the site will also have a business profile page with more information about the business, links to their website, any official bodies they are members of as well as a logo to indicate that we have checked that they are insured. To add further confidence for you, the potential customer, it will also state how long they have been advertising with us. Also each business has a page where uploaded photographs of their work are available for you to see.

after reading between 1 and 6 reviews.*

The website is called Trusted and Local. If a business is featured on the site their advert will carry the Trusted and Local logo on it so please look out for the logo and check out the reviews!

fiveways A great new project from One Church Brighton to get people talking...

TABLE TALK BRIGHTON TABLE TALK has been launched. The mission is to make Brighton even more friendly by offering opportunities to talk to new people. The simple idea is that cafés have an assigned table, marked with a TABLE TALK BRIGHTON stand, where people sit if they’re happy to talk to other customers. It’s for everyone, alone, with a friend, child or carer. We want people to TAKE TIME TO TALK. Maybe you’d like to meet and talk to more people, or take a break from your phone or laptop. Even a short conversation could make a big difference – you never know who you might meet. TABLE TALK has been supported enthusiastically, not only by cafés but by people of all ages and by the leader of Brighton & Hove City Council. Already participating are cafés in different areas of the city, including the seafront and Preston Park. Among them are independents, cafés within stores such as M&S, Debenhams and Waterstones, the national café Starbucks, the two main Royal Sussex County Hospital cafés and community cafés. The idea developed when sadly there were accounts of people going for days without speaking to anyone. More recently BBC research has shown that many people, especially 16-24 year olds, feel lonely at some time. Brighton is a friendly city but can be lonely for some. We want an assigned table to become the norm in city cafés for everyone to enjoy. Some cafés will offer TABLE TALK all the time whilst others on a specific day or time. Details are on the website www.tabletalkbrighton.org or Facebook.com/ tabletalkbrighton. More cafés are being added, aiming to have one close to each medical surgery in Brighton. Why not give this a try as the new year starts? It could make 2019 a more interesting and enjoyable year for you. Some of us feel uncomfortable going into a café alone but it’s a safe environment.

fiveways News from the Friends of Hollingbury & Burstead Woods...

THE FRUITS OF OUR LABOUR Going by the name of our group you could be forgiven for thinking that we just look after the woods, but in fact we also help with the care of the meadow area between the covered reservoir and the lane leading to the golf club house off Ditchling Road: here we were instrumental in creating the chalk banks at the top end of the meadow and the wild flowers we planted on these have been a great success in attracting bees, butterflies and other insects. We have also planted flowering shrubs along the western edge of the woods bordering Hollingbury Park and on advice from the local branch of Butterfly Conservation we nurtured the thistles here and have been rewarded with the sight of white-letter hairstreak butterflies feeding on them; we have even seen them mating! Our members have, over the years, extended the hedge along the south side of the lane to the golf club house right up to the recycling area and created another hedge which borders the southern slopes of the woods running along Hollingbury Rise West. This has deterred the dumping of garden and builders’ waste to a large extent, but unfortunately some people still seem determined to break through the hedge at the bottom end, especially at this time of year, when we often find Christmas trees, sometimes complete with decorations, thoughtlessly discarded even though the council provides recycling points nearby! Despite this our hedges are, on the whole, thriving and we are seeing the fruits of our labour with bright red rose hips and the darker red haws of the hawthorn, purplish black of the sloes on the blackthorn, the black berries on dogwood and, perhaps the most curious of all, the bright pink and clashing orange centres of the fruits of the spindle bush. All these, together with the nuts from the hazel we have planted in the hedgerows, help to feed our birds and small mammals through the cold winter days.

fiveways You can support Chestnut Tree House by buying Maggie Theed’s fruit leathers at local shops...

FIVEWAYS RESIDENT TAKES ON INCA TRAIL CHALLENGE FOR CHILDREN’S HOSPICE I think life is about giving and challenging ourselves - this challenge incorporates both of these aspects for me. Chestnut Tree House Children’s Hospice is an amazing place that supports children with life shortening conditions. It is a place of support and respite for the whole family. I have always wanted to go to Peru and follow the Inca Trail; little did I know that I would be doing this in my 70th year as a challenge for the Chestnut Tree House Children’s Hospice. This is a major challenge for me, as I have never done anything like this in my life, but somehow I feel the time is right. My friend Jude will be trekking alongside me and we will be training together over the next year. This past Summer/Autumn I have been inundated with lovely organic fruits which I have turned into very tasty fruit leathers to help fundraise for the challenge. They make a great healthy snack and are available to buy in the Fiveways area at Tilt, Wigwam, Blakers Park Café and Choice Cuts.

You can buy these fruit leathers in Fiveways

fiveways Our book review from Gary Mepsted...

THE COLLECTOR BY JOHN FOWLES Christmas is, for me, a pretty dispiriting time books-wise. The bookshops are never so stuffed with stock and customers but, for many of the purchasers, it’s their once-a-year-trip to a bookshop, and the books on sale, huge piles of ghosted autobiographies of minor celebrities and sports persons, do not contribute to the joy of the season. Okay, enough of the cynicism. Having failed to find a worthy recently published book to bring before you, I’ve explored my shelves and come up with a couple of titles which have fallen off the literary radar, the first being John Fowles’ debut novel, The Collector, which was published in 1963 and made into a rather good film two years later starring Terence Stamp and Samantha Eggar. The novel tells the story of a lonely 21a pretty art student, Miranda young man, Frederick Clegg, who is obsessed with Grey. A substantial pools win enables butterfly collecting Frederick to buy an isolated country house in which he holds Miranda prisoner in the cellar he has converted into living accommodation. Frederick hopes that the proximity between them will result in Miranda falling in love with him. I’ll say no more so as not to ruin the story. The final line - no peeking - packs a real punch. The material is the stuff of many psychological thrillers, but in Fowles’ hands it takes on a philosophical dimension which greatly adds to the heft of the novel without ever threatening to sink it. The Collector is one of the most accomplished first novels I can think of; utterly compelling and truly chilling.

ROOM BY LYNNE REID BANKS My eye fell next on Lynne Reid Banks’ novel, The L-Shaped Room, which first appeared in 1960. The story, set in London in the late 50s, follows a young woman, Jane Graham, who has been evicted from her parents’ house because she’s pregnant. She ends up living in a seedy boarding house populated with social outcasts. Biting social commentary lies at the heart of this brilliant, and affecting, novel but it never takes charge of the narrative. The reader is left in no doubt as to how difficult it was for a woman in Jane’s position to navigate society’s moral code with regard to living independently and being pregnant out of wedlock. A riveting read, and a none too flattering portrait of British life just before the swinging 60s. Oh, the author wasn’t too thrilled with the film adaptation. Gary Mepsted

BIKE THEFT IN FIVEWAYS There has been a recent spate of bike thefts in Fiveways. Local resident Andrea Jones reports: “My partner had her bike stolen on the morning of Thursday 6th December from in front of our house; it was chained to a bar on the wall and they pulled the bar off. She reported it to the police. When walking the dog later and going to the shops at Ditchling Road, she saw it tied up against a lamp-post! So she untied it and brought it home. She noticed about five other bikes unlocked in the same area in front of the deli and Beaumonts estate agents on Ditchling Road. Someone seems to 23 have been stealing local bikes, lining them up on the Ditchling Road, then coming through and picking them up in batches.” This process has also been witnessed by staff at Beaumonts. Andrea and her partner have reported it to the police, who at the time of writing were looking into it. In the meantime, Andrea has been daily taking some of the bikes and putting them in her garden (pictured above) because, she says, as a daily cyclist she cannot bear to see people’s bikes stolen so blatantly.

Anyone who has had a bike stolen locally may be able to recover it from Andrea’s garden. St Matthias Church have also offered to store some of the bikes. If your bike has been stolen in Fiveways, you can contact Andrea at aj@goodhealthprojects.co.uk to find out more.

QUIZ QUESTION SIX:

In the opening scene of The Godfather movie, what is the name of Don Corleone’s daughter whose wedding is taking place as her father takes requests?

fiveways Hannah from the Pet Shed gives her advice on your pet problems...

PET PROBLEM CORNER Welcome to our feature helping pet owners around the Fiveways area with advice. Now Christmas is a dim and distant memory, many of us turn our thoughts to getting fit and healthy. This can and should also apply to our pets as they, too, overindulge on Christmas dinner and treats over the festive period. How do I know if my pet is overweight? Your vet can give you a good idea of the ideal weight for your pet at your next check-up. They will also have kept a track of their weight and can easily see if this has gone up or down significantly. This handy visual guide (kindly borrowed from burnspet.co.uk) can also help you decide if 25 your pet’s weight needs addressing. (There is also a cat condition chart and more information at: burnspet.co.uk/dog-cat-bodycondition-chart.html.) So, my pet is overweight, how do I address this? There are three main areas you can concentrate on to help your pet lose weight. 1.

Food – Are you feeding a good quality food that satisfies them? Consider switching to a light or diet version of your current food. Measure and weigh the correct amount of food and keep a marked measuring cup handy.

2.

Treats – Do you treat a lot? Reduce treats or break in half. It is the action of treating that most pets enjoy, not the quantity. Use food from the daily allowance or substitute treats with lower calorie versions or fruit and veg. Carrots and apples make great treats for dogs.

3.

Exercise - Make sure your pet is getting the right amount of exercise for their species, breed and age. Build your dog’s exercise into your own exercise routine or invest in some toys to help stimulate your cat.

All of these things can be done slowly and gradually and will have benefits for your pocket and your pet’s health. Never starve your pet and always have a source of fresh drinking water available. If you are worried about your pet’s weight do chat to your vet and also bear in mind there can be medical conditions and medicines that make pets prone to weight gain and weight loss. Have a pet related question? Drop a line to Hannah at thepetshed1@gmail.com or pop in and see her at The Pet Shed, 100 Preston Drove, BN1 6EW. fiveways directory January 2019

fiveways Local personal trainer Liz Fulford gets a new client ready for a half marathon...

MONTH THREE

TRAINING FOR A HALF MARATHON

To set the scene it was over 10 years ago when a new local personal trainer contacted us at the Fiveways Directory wanting to promote her fledging business. What transpired was a series of articles culminating in the editor running the New Forest Half Marathon. Now 10 years on the challenge is whether the same can be done again with no running since and another 10 years on the clock!! Liz Fulford: 31.25% 30.75% Running can be as much a mental challenge as it is a 30.25% physical test of fitness. Like Tim, runners can often find 29.75% that their body is willing to run for longer, but mentally 29.25% 27 it’s too hard to keep going. There are various strategies 28.75% used by runners to help overcome mental barriers. Tim 28.25% will be trying these out during his runs! 27.75% T 27.25% A Focusing on a training schedule on a week to week 26.75% R basis helps it become less overwhelming. Dividing 26.25% G up runs into smaller segments will make the distance 25.75% E feel more manageable. Visualising the event and most 25.25% T importantly the finish line, how you’ll feel, who you’ll 24.75% see etc. Making plans for the day/evening ahead, it will 24.25% give you something to look forward to during your run 23.75% 23.25% and keep your mind occupied. Finding a mantra you can 1 2 3 4 5 6 play over and over in your mind to keep you centred and focused. Never underestimate what you are doing; run - there just isn’t space in there for all this stuff running long distances is hard. whilst running as you need all your mental capacity and strength to get you through the run. All that noise in Tim (the client): your head goes and when you finally finish running your Getting these longer runs in is tough!! There are times mental counter is zeroed and the big ‘reset’ button has whilst running that all I want to do is stop but somehow been pushed and you are in a better frame of mind to manage to continue to the end. The reward however is face the challenges of life with fresh eyes. well worth the effort. All that said it is still pretty challenging though!! I Sorry for another analogy but I am finding that running guess without the challenge you wouldn’t experience is like having a big ‘reset’ button in my head. When I the benefits. Have done a few 5-mile runs and up to 6 set out I have all the normal things bouncing around next week. Have had some great runs under the cliffs my skull: work issues, family stuff, upcoming dates and between the Marina and Rottingdean and up on the events etc etc. South Downs Way. Running is definitely a great way to get out and experience more of our beautiful region. The truth is, however - especially whilst doing a longer

fiveways News from the council...

FIELD OFFICERS ARE GO! A new role bringing council services out to the city’s communities seven days a week is proving an instant hit. The Field Officer team became fully operational in December. The service has been developed to work closely with communities and partners, and the team act as troubleshooters to deliver co-ordinated, fast and effective enforcement and inspection work across a number of council services. These include environmental health, housing, planning enforcement, community safety, seafront services and parks. A key feature is working within and with communities to promote a more proactive and preventative way of working to resolve issues efficiently and effectively. While it’s still early days, the service is already showing real benefits. The Field Officer team working between 12 noon and 8pm seven days a week allows them to visit residents at home to discuss complaints and identify quick solutions. It also allows information and intelligence to be gathered out-of-hours on more complex cases, which can help resolve them more speedily. And early face-to-face communication has meant the team can deal with cases quickly. The team has received a lot of positive feedback about the speed of the response. A ward councillor who reported an issue with rubbish scattered around a recycling point commented: “The two Field Officers that were on duty on Saturday morning performed their duties admirably. Please thank them.” One of the duties the team have taken over is a new weekend out-of-hours noise nuisance service, aiming to provide a safer and more effective response. Residents are now able to email or phone in noise complaints on

Friday, Saturday and Sunday nights, and will be contacted the following morning with the offer of a visit that day. Councillor Emma Daniel, chair of the Neighbourhoods, Inclusion, Communities & Equalities committee, said: “Introducing the Field Officers is a key part of our work taking council services out to our communities and a great example of how collaborating with residents and partners can help us to deliver better services. We’ve recruited a team who, as well as expertise in enforcement and inspection, can engage and work effectively with the diverse communities in the city and encourage residents to get involved and work together to improve the quality of life for everyone.” For weekend noise complaints, call 01273 293541 or email outofhoursnoise@brighton-hove.gov.uk, from 5pm on a Friday through to 9am on Monday morning.

QUIZ QUESTION EIGHT:

In hospitals, Nephrology departments generally treat medical issues related to which organs of the body?

fiveways This article is by Nick, a volunteer for the Impetus Neighbourhood Care Scheme...

READY TO SHARE YOUR NEIGHBOURLY GOODWILL? Today I picked up Terry from his home, as I do once a week. We collected his prescription from the pharmacy and then drove to a café in Kemptown and enjoyed a pot of exquisite Chinese tea and sumptuous cake. We talked about his Pilates class, his time living in Thailand, his life as a designer, about cataloguing his photographs, documenting his personal history. He is 81 with poor health and sight, the result of a stroke, and with some mobility issues.  The combined effect of these conditions has resulted in him being 31 confined to his flat for long periods. Due to his sight he is unable to watch TV or read and his days can be long and boring which causes him to feel depressed.  When I signed up as a volunteer for Impetus Neighbourhood Care Scheme, it was because I believed I could help make someone’s life a little better.  Giving a couple of hours every few weeks to provide some companionship for a lonely, isolated individual seemed an inconsequential use of my spare time to me and was a way of doing something for the local community. I had expected to bring some small solace into the life of the person I was assigned to visit. I had not expected to make a difference to someone’s life, neither had I expected to find a friend; “You are the highlight of my week”, “I always look forward to our outings”, “I forget about my problems when I am with you”, “You inspire me to do more” are some of the comments Terry has made about the difference our meetings have made to his life. I have been visiting Terry for over a year now and we meet once a week, rain or shine, to get him out of his home and find somewhere to have tea where he can share, with wit, energy and passion, stories of his fascinating life.
