WELCOME TO THE FIVEWAYS DIRECTORY!! Welcome to the February Fiveways Directory. This month we have our usual selection of items, including an old photo of Ditchling Road School, now Downs Junior School – if you know anyone in the picture we’d love to hear from you. We feature Lucy Williams, the Fiveways artist who has designed new signs for Brighton Palace Pier, and we also have news of a couple of February events – the Brighton Science Festival over half-term and the Brighton Half Marathon. Our fitness expert Marianne has a new running route through Fiveways for you, and Hannah from The Pet Shed has a suggested walk for the dogs. Do get in touch with us and let us know what’s going on – all feedback is very welcome. Have a great February. QUIZ QUESTION ONE:

Rudyard Kipling, author of The Jungle Book, was born in which country?

fiveways Meet the artist who won the competition to design new signs for Brighton Palace Pier...

FIVEWAYS FACE – LUCY WILLIAMS Lucy Williams is an artist and lives in Waldegrave Road. She recently won a design competition for new signs at the Brighton Palace Pier and her other works include the Brighton Open Market archways and the Hollingdean Veolia Dragonflies. What do you like about living in Fiveways? I grew up in Lewes and visited the Fiveways Open Houses when I was 15. I thought it was very Bohemian! I love the community. It’s a good place to bring up kids. I’ve also got an allotment that I share at Roedale. My partner and I co-own a workshop on Beaconsfield Road, but mainly I work from a posh shed at home, so we are very embedded here. Tell us more about your art... My art is about a sense of place, celebrating places and what places mean to people. I am now doing less large-scale works. I am concentrating on making things from found items from different, often local places. I work with twigs, thorns, grass, mud and shells - whatever I can find. I am working with basketry techniques, wild pigments and geology – take a look at my Instagram account. When will we get to see your new signs at the Palace Pier? Everyone asks me that! ..and I can’t wait to see them. Unlike other works I am not responsible for their construction – which is a relief as it’s such an exposed location. The pier signs have been held up in planning, but work is due to start at Easter. Brighton Palace Pier are already using the design as their logo. What projects do you have planned for 2018? As my work has taken a huge change of direction, I am building up a portfolio and learning different techniques. I am also looking at how to use different local plants to make stuff. For instance I’ve been making brushes from pine needles and corn husks; weaving grass from Hollingbury Hill Fort and making things from oak apples. I hope to run courses too, but that’s for the future. I will have some works for sale at our studio – Archipelago Studios on Beaconsfield Road - for the May festival and also some sculptures that I designed going up at Riverside Park in Newhaven. They have been made by Fiveways resident Jon Mills.

fiveways The latest column from Nelson, a four-legged Fiveways resident...

NELSON’S WALKS When the weather is rubbish (like it is today) it is a real struggle to find somewhere to walk the dog. Waterhall is a good option as it is large (38 acres) and away from the road. A great location also for nervous dogs and there is a huge amount of space. On the down side there isn’t much shelter and also no café but Patcham is a short walk away and The Coach House at 108 Old London Road allows well behaved dogs. Start: Difficult to access on foot - the best option is to travel by bus: the 5, 5A and 56 bus routes serve Patcham Village and Waterhall is a short walk from here or there is limited parking. Walk length: Any length depending on how far you want to wander. Time: As long as you want. Terrain: Paths run through the park or you can venture onto the grassy areas. Plenty of space to throw and catch balls and walk off leads away from traffic. Other: Waterhall is in the South Downs National Park, has a large dew pond and, as a Conservation Area, contains a mixture of species, rich grassland and scrub; as a

Site of Nature Conservation Importance it attracts many rare and endangered birds and mammals. The walk: Just explore to your heart’s content! Do let me or Hannah (at The Pet Shed) know if you like this walk and if you have any favourite walks you would like me to try out – ending in a nice dog-friendly watering hole. Hannah can be contacted via email on thepetshed1@gmail.com

fiveways News of school admission arrangements for 2019...

SCHOOL CATCHMENT CHANGES SCRAPPED School admission arrangements for September 2019 were considered by Brighton & Hove City Council’s Children, Young People and Skills Committee on 15th January following a six-week consultation held late last year. Councillors agreed with a report recommending a reduction in admission numbers at three primary age schools and no changes for secondary school catchment areas. Council support for a planned new free school on the Brighton General Hospital site in Elm Grove has been withdrawn. The cross-party group that oversees admission arrangements had considered the feedback provided through the consultation as well as new information becoming available and new offers being made by the city’s secondary schools. The group recommended that proposed reductions in admission numbers should not go ahead for Hertford Infant School and Benfield Primary School, although reductions were recommended to go ahead at three other schools in the city. A majority of respondents to the consultation were against the proposed changes to catchment areas, which included a proposal to move an area north and east of Elm Grove out of the Dorothy Stringer / Varndean catchment and into the Longhill High School catchment.

Varndean School is set to expand

New annual pupil number projections based on data gathered in October 2017 point to a smaller rise in pupil numbers city-wide over the next few years than was indicated by the projections from October 2016 that informed the recent consultation. Also, Blatchington Mill is permanently increasing its intake by one form of entry as of September 2018 and Varndean has confirmed that it wishes to permanently increase its admissions numbers by an extra 30 pupils per year. Patcham High wishes to permanently increase its admissions numbers by an extra 10 pupils per year as of September 2019. Dorothy Stringer has confirmed that it is willing to provide 30 additional places in September 2019 and 2020 on a temporary basis. The working group recommended that the additional places outlined at Dorothy Stringer and Patcham should be agreed, and that the current catchment areas should remain unchanged in 2019. The report recommended that the temporary expansion of Varndean should be agreed and the request for a permanent expansion will be considered separately.  The Chair of the Children, Young People and Skills Committee, Councillor Dan Chapman, said: “Taking these changes in circumstances into consideration our administration believes that the new free school, as proposed in 2015, is no longer in the best interests of the city as a whole. We have therefore advised the University of Brighton Academies Trust that we have withdrawn the in-principle support for the new school.”

fiveways Would you like to design a snail?

SUSSEX ARTISTS WANTED FOR GIANT SNAILS This autumn the streets of Brighton and Hove will come alive with a colourful and magical art installation featuring up to 50 giant snail sculptures, in aid of Martlets Hospice. Snailspace, the much-anticipated follow-up to Snowdogs by the Sea, is reaching out to local artists to submit their designs for this unusual 3D canvas. Art and artists are at the heart of this unique fundraising event for Martlets. The originality, creativity and quality of the individual sculptures ensure that, not only do they delight the event’s visitors, but crucially, that they sell for a premium at auction, raising vital funds for the charity. Building on the success of the previous event, which raised £310,000 for Martlets, organisers are keen to encourage submissions from local artists to showcase the wealth of creative talent in the region. Artists are able to submit their designs online and the artists chosen by the Snailspace sponsors will be paid a commission to bring their design to life.  Speaking about her experience of being involved in Snowdogs, artist and illustrator Sarah Arnett said: “Every single aspect of being involved in Snowdogs and creating ‘Max’ has led to work or commissions. Having something so visible, over such a long period, meant that it really brought me to the attention of a new

Martlets nurses with Disco Snail

audience and has led directly to specific commissions as well as creating interest in my work.” Artist Katherine Griffin, who created the highly popular Snowdog ‘Bobby’, has already been commissioned to create a snail. Speaking about being involved, Katherine said: “The snail sculpture is fantastic, I love it. It’s a really great surface to paint on.” To find out more artists should visit www.snailspacebrighton.co.uk. Deadline for submissions is end of March 2018.

Are you thinking about returning to the workplace and want to brush up your skills?  Perhaps you’re looking for work experience to help you on the road to your career. fiveways Our regular fitness column from Marianne Clark...

THE SLOW ROAD TO FIVEWAYS... Were you one of the millions who resolved to get fit in 2018? According to a recent article, most fitness resolutions last under two weeks. In the first few days of January, gym memberships spike hugely, but just by 12th January most people have quit altogether and reverted to their unfit, old ways. It’s well past 12th January now, so if you haven’t quit, you’re doing pretty well, but there are a few things you can do to increase your chances of success. Recruit a friend to join you - it adds an element of commitment and accountability, as well as a social element, and might even bring a healthy pinch of motivational competition. Data from Strava, the sports social media app, suggests that people who work out with friends do 20% more exercise, and those in sports clubs do 50% more! Plan what you will do ahead of time - it’s way too easy to talk yourself out of going for a run if the weather is miserable and you don’t have a clear plan. The less you have to think about, the more likely you are to do it. So, get your kit ready the night before, decide on how long, and plan a route. Give yourself as few decisions to make as possible.

Fit your exercise into your daily routine. Using the journey to work to exercise is especially good - commuting on foot or by bike is not only super time-efficient, apparently those who exercise in the morning are more productive at work. fiveways News from The Sussex Beacon...

THE GRAND BRIGHTON HALF MARATHON 25TH FEBRUARY, 2018 Every year, Brighton-based charity The Sussex Beacon organise and deliver The Grand Brighton Half Marathon, a hugely popular event that features a beautiful seafront course and amazing crowd support, and is one of the first half marathons on the running calendar. The Sussex Beacon is supported by its incredible ‘Team Beacon’ runners, who have fundraised £66,000 over the last two years of The Grand Brighton Half Marathon, and will race for the Sussex Beacon again on 25th February 2018. The funds raised by each runner are fundamental to the continuation of the charity’s services for people 29 living with HIV, which cost over £2 million a year. Brighton has the second highest HIV prevalence in the UK, and access to specialist care and support is vital. With a 10-bed inpatient unit, The Sussex Beacon provides 24 hour medical and psychological care to people struggling with a new diagnosis, starting new medication, recovering from HIV-related cancer treatment and dementia, family services and end of life care. With final preparations for the Half Marathon underway, The Sussex Beacon is looking forward to another fantastic challenge event. Come along and join us for the incredible atmosphere of race day. The race starts at 9am on Madeira Drive between Brighton Pier and Brighton Marina, and you can cheer for our runners at various locations in Brighton and Hove. For more info, please visit www.brightonhalfmarathon.com/sussex-beacon

BRIGHTON SINGLES CLUB CELEBRATES 10 YEARS A Brighton club for unattached men and women is celebrating its tenth birthday. In 2008 Brighton joined the list of places where The Group, a Sussex club for unattached men and women, aged 50+, could meet. Says Tricia Bentley, co-founder, “We’re very proud that some people have met new partners through The Group, but it isn’t a dating agency. It’s an opportunity to meet new friends. We have a great time. So push open that door. Come in and join us. You’ll be very welcome.” The Group meets in Brighton on the third Tuesday evening of every month and also meets in Lewes, Burgess Hill and Horsham. Details: www.thegroup.org.uk

QUIZ QUESTION EIGHT :

Whose longstanding arch enemy is Baron von Greenback?

fiveways Our book review from Gary Mepsted...

‘THE DIARY OF A BOOKSELLER’ BY SHAUN BYTHELL PROFILE, HARDBACK, £14.99 Any passionate reader who loves to collect books has almost certainly fantasised about running their own second-hand bookshop, probably somewhere pretty and rural involving trips to gorgeous, sequestered manor houses to rummage through their vast libraries. If you are one of these people, Shaun Bythell’s “The Diary of a Bookseller” should be approached with caution. The Book Shop, Wigtown, is Scotland’s largest second-hand bookshop; a Georgian townhouse with a maze of corridors and a wealth of diverse titles which would seem to offer its owner the perfect life. However Bythell’s diary paints a considerably less joyous picture of the bookseller’s world, one where 33where the majority of the Amazon constantly nibbles at your profit margins, customers are either rude or mad (often both), and where staff are unreliable and problematic to deal with, eg, Nicky, who on Fridays brings in discarded food from the Morrisons skip. These gifts are often damaged beyond recognition and are probably hazardous to health if handled, let alone consumed. Notwithstanding the occasionally clunky prose, Bythell’s comedic approach to his diary guarantees much laughter. Little actually happens during the course of the year chronicled but there is a strangely compelling quality to the book which makes it a consistently entertaining read. It certainly offers a none too attractive view of humanity - at least that portion of it who visit second-hand bookshops - which makes Bythell’s misanthropy understandable, even commendable.

Each month is prefaced with a short extract from Orwell’s ‘Bookshop Memories’ which are fascinating in themselves. As Bythell informs us, Orwell worked parttime in Booklover’s Corner in Hampstead whilst working on “Keep the Aspidistra Flying”. Orwell’s character in ‘Aspidistra’, Gordon Comstock, also works part-time in a bookshop, having given up a successful career in advertising in order to lead a more purposeful life and have the necessary time to write. Needless to say, this being Orwell, things do not go well for Gordon. I’m not exactly a fan of Orwell, but I can recommend ‘Aspidistra’. Meanwhile, back at The Book Shop, Wigtown... The Diary of a Bookseller, despite appearing in time to capture the Christmas market, is much more than a stocking-filler or a last minute present for a difficult relative. It offers a rather dystopian view of the contemporary book trade and the way books are sold and marketed. It should, at the very least, make the reader value the bookshops we currently have (both new and second-hand), and do what we can to ensure they remain in business.
