HAPPY CHRISTMAS TO EVERYONE IN FIVEWAYS!
It’s hard to believe it’s December already, but Christmas is fast approaching. We have details of some Christmas events to help you get into the festive spirit, including Fiveways traders’ annual late-night shopping evening. Where you can, please try and use these wonderful local businesses for your Christmas shopping. This month’s featured local person is Jason Rhodes, who has just published his first book. There’s also news from Brighton Lions of Project Wenceslas, where people who don’t need their Winter Fuel Payments can donate them to help people in fuel poverty, and Hannah from the award-winning Pet Shed has some advice on how to keep your rabbits and guinea pigs warm in the winter. We wish you all a peaceful and happy festive period! The Fiveways Directory Team info@fivewaysdirectory.co.uk www.fivewaysdirectory.co.uk Cover picture: Laura Doff

QUIZ QUESTION ONE:
Which German city, famous for its Christmas market (Christkindlmarkt) and Christmas gingerbread (Lebkuchen), was once known as the ‘gingerbread capital of the world’?
fiveways Meet a Fiveways resident who’s just published a book for children...
FIVEWAYS FACE – JASON RHODES Jason Rhodes of Grantham Road has just published his first book, “Imagine Eating Lemons – A Children’s Introduction to Mindfulness”. He’s also an actor and model. How long have you lived in Fiveways? I’ve lived in Fiveways for around eight years now. Tell us more about your book... The book revolves around the tiny woodland creature Chester Chestnut. We follow Chester as he experiences challenging thoughts and emotions during his first day at school, on the day of a performance and also preparing for a snowy walk accompanied by his pet firefly Pippa. He uses mindfulness to help manage his anxious thoughts and feelings and because the book is in rhyme the reader can naturally follow and learn the actions that repeat throughout the book. How did you come up with the idea? I came across mindfulness to help with the extreme anxiety I experienced myself for several years. It has become the most powerful tool I use to keep myself grounded in challenging situations and is something I
practise every single day. I believe that if children can learn these tools whilst they are young it will hugely impact their ability to deal with the common difficulties we all face in day to day life. Have you got any more books planned? Yes, I have five other Chester Chestnut books planned which touch on various important issues, as well as a book for adults breaking down the reasons behind their suffering in a fun and quirky way. What do you like to do in your spare time? I love to go for quiet mindful walks in the forest and on the beach. I also love to simply walk around Brighton with absolutely no aim or destination in mind and see who I meet and where I end up. “Imagine Eating Lemons” by Jason Rhodes and Richard Dearing is published by Happy Sapling Books and available from Wigwam in Fiveways, About Balance and also from Amazon.

fiveways An appeal to help people in fuel poverty...
BRIGHTON LIONS CLUB - PROJECT WENCESLAS Brighton Lions Club is launching Project Wenceslas, a campaign to help combat fuel poverty in the city of Brighton and Hove. People who receive the annual Winter Fuel Payment and feel they do not need it are invited to donate the amount to Brighton Lions, who can assure that every penny will go towards alleviating fuel poverty. Fuel poverty has increased mainly due to rising energy prices and more people die from cold housing than die on the roads each year. The main causes of excess winter deaths are heart attacks and strokes caused by increased blood pressure from living in a cold home, as well as respiratory and breathing infections. The cold can lower the immune system’s resistance to respiratory infections. Mental health is also affected. Some people become cut off from friends and family because they don’t want to invite them into a cold house. Cold housing can also make it difficult for children to study or do homework, therefore affecting their education, work opportunities and long-term health. Donations can be made by credit/debit cards through Brighton Lions Club’s website at www.brightonlions.org.uk or cheques payable to Brighton Lions Club should be sent to the club at Lions Dene, The Deneway, Brighton, BN1 5AZ. People sending cheques are asked to confirm that their donations may be treated as Gift Aid so that the value of the donation can be increased by 25%.

fiveways A new project from Martlets hospice to support bereaved men...
THE HEALING POWER OF NATURE Martlets has begun a unique project to support bereaved men as they tend to a community allotment. Earthworks is a weekly space for the men to get together to grow and harvest an abundance of vegetables, flowers and fruit. Led by a hospice counsellor and a volunteer gardener, it’s a welcoming and supportive environment in which to work, whilst enjoying getting outside in the fresh air. Jane Cato from the hospice’s Bereavement Team said, “It’s all very relaxed; each morning begins with a cuppa in the allotment shed around the wood burner. Previous gardening experience isn’t important; you can take on whichever jobs interest you, whether that’s lighter work in the greenhouse or getting really stuck into the digging and clearing. It’s a very hands-on way for people to come together and to use their skills and energy to complete practical tasks, whilst gaining the benefit of talking to others who are in a similar situation – if that’s in Brighton & Hove for bereaved men to get together. So, what they want to do. it makes sense to find an alternative way to support those “Less than a quarter of those using our hospice men, since we know we can help them.” bereavement services are men and there’s nowhere else To find out more about Earthworks, or to sign up, please contact the Martlets’ Patient and Family Support Administrator on 01273 273400, or email bereavement@martlets.org.uk. www.themartlets.org.uk

QUIZ QUESTION FIVE:
What kind of water is added to high quality marzipan?
fiveways News from the council...
ELECTRIC VEHICLE TESTING POINT IN WALDEGRAVE ROAD Five electric vehicle (EV) test sites have been installed in residential areas across the city as part of the council’s commitment to developing the EV charging point network.
The test sites are at Waldegrave Road, Montpelier Road, Ventnor Villas, Maresfield Road and Norton Road. In this testing period, council officers will be assessing usage to see if there are any issues to resolve before the roll-out of other chargers across Brighton & Hove. In May 2018, Brighton & Hove City Council was awarded a £300,000 government grant from the Office of Low Emission Vehicles to install 200 new electric vehicle charge points across the city. These are being installed in suitable locations on existing lamp columns as this is where the electricity is delivered from for this scheme. Developing the electric vehicle infrastructure is one aspect of the council’s strategy to tackle air pollution and improve air quality in the city. Other initiatives include providing funding for low and zero emission buses; improving junctions and introducing a Low Emission Zone. Major projects,
including the Valley Gardens scheme, aim to improve transport routes for cyclists and pedestrians and enhance the city centre’s green spaces. Chair of the Environment, Transport and Sustainability Committee, Councillor Gill Mitchell, said: “We are committed to expanding our electric vehicle charger network to ensure we meet the needs of our residents, businesses and visitors. There has been a growing demand for charging points in recent years and we want to make it as easy as possible for people to make the switch to electric vehicles, which will help reduce emissions and improve air quality.”

fiveways Our book reviewer Gary Mepsted on getting a novel into print...
THE TYRANNY OF THE SUBMISSION PROCESS... Nothing of note has come to my attention this month, book-wise, and so I’d thought I write a short piece, from an author’s perspective, about how those books I recommended find - or fail to find - their way into print. A trio of my more resilient and determined creative writing students - Liz, Grace, Jim - have recently finished novels and are currently seeking either an agent or a publisher, an arcane and archaic process which appears to have changed little since I began submitting my own work many years ago - okay,21 back in the pre-internet age of the late sixties when agents/publishers had to be contacted by letter and manuscripts had to be typewritten, first on quarto sheets and then A4. Initially agents/publishers required the first few chapters for perusal, sensibly not wanting to consume available office space with books consisting of several hundred printed pages. Only if they were sufficiently interested did they request the full manuscript. There were hoops to jump through, obstacles to be negotiated: synopses, covering letters and the like. These impediments, and many others, still exist today. Even though a lengthy novel rarely consumes more than 1Mb of disk space, agents/publishers still insist on the author submitting the opening few chapters or the first 5,000 to 10,000 words rather than the book in its entirety, which will save them time, and give the reader a quick, accurate idea of the book’s merit, if any. Many novels start well but fall apart in the middle. Today’s novelists are often forced to draw comparisons between their work and the work of other published writers, to describe their ideal reader, and state where their novel exists in the canon. The author must be social media savvy, have their own website/blog, be on Twitter, Instagram, etc. A high profile presence in the virtual world is now mandatory. How marketable, indeed, how sexy the
author comes across, is of more importance than the quality of their writing, as is a juicy bio. It’s the author who is being sold rather than their book. My lovely, and prodigiously talented, students are all finding the submission process horribly frustrating and unnecessarily complex, and are beginning to suspect that the system is designed specifically to discourage writers from submitting their work. When I speak of the time when a novelist could remain largely anonymous, a time when readers were more interested in an author’s words than their favourite pizza toppings, they give an envious sigh. Gary Mepsted

In ‘The Christmas Song’ (Chestnuts roasting on an open fire...), what are the “folks dressed up like”?
fiveways Hannah from the Pet Shed gives her advice on your pet problems...
PET PROBLEM CORNER Welcome to our feature helping pet owners around the Fiveways area with pet advice. As winter approaches it’s time to make sure that all animals that live outside are as comfortable as possible. How do I keep my rabbits and guinea pigs warm and dry this winter? Most small animals adapt well as the temperature changes and are perfectly happy outside in the colder months. The first thing to check is that any hutch is still sound, off the ground (4 inches), waterproof and sheltered from wind. Many people move their pets into sheds or garages but do ensure the new location is pet friendly and free from fumes from engines 25or chemicals. You can add cardboard nesting boxes filled with warm hay and other bedding to keep pets cosy. Hutch covers, and heat pads can also add to their comfort or use old sleeping bags, blankets or carpet plus waterproof tarpaulin on top and around the cage to keep things snug and warm. Do remove these from the front during the day and allow some air to circulate at all times. In very cold weather water bottles can freeze and it is a good idea to have a bowl of water as well as a bottle as you will need to compensate for the reduced moisture intake now that they are not out on the grass as much. Moisture in toilet areas can also freeze so should be cleaned daily. With less access to grass, ensure eating hay is available at all times and give a handful of fresh leafy greens such as carrot tops and broccoli and good quality nuggets every day. Did you know a guinea pig should be eating their own body size in hay every day? If your pet has lost a companion during the year and is now on their own or is getting on in years you could also consider bringing them indoors but make sure you do this before it gets too cold as they would not react well to a sudden change in temperature. QUIZ QUESTION SEVEN:
What did Harry Potter get as a Christmas present during his first semester at Hogwarts?
fiveways Local personal trainer Liz Fulford gets a new client ready for a half marathon...
MONTH TWO
TRAINING FOR A HALF MARATHON
To set the scene it was over 10 years ago when a new local personal trainer contacted us at the Fiveways Directory wanting to promote her fledging business. What transpired was a series of articles culminating in the editor running the New Forest Half Marathon. Now 10 years on the challenge is whether the same can be done again with no running since and another 10 years on the clock!! Liz Fulford: Our focus this month was to build Tim’s running up to 4 miles, which he managed with a gradual build up of the duration of his runs. He did experience his first “bad” 27very run where he felt dizzy and weak which he found disheartening after the progress he’d made. However, when we discussed the events of that day it was apparent that he had taken on insufficient water so the likely cause of this was dehydration. Nutrition is a vital part of any fitness programme and so food input needs to be considered carefully. Put simply, your body is made up of what you put into it. With some guidance from me, Tim is now aware of some small and simple changes he can make in his diet to achieve the best results. He has already seen a reduction in body fat (see table) and will continue to do so whilst simultaneously increasing his energy levels and banishing his cravings for “bad” food. Research strongly suggests that moderate dietary changes such as Tim’s not only make you look better and become stronger, but reduce the risk of heart disease, type 2 diabetes, some cancers and various forms of depression. Tim has really shown his commitment and “staying power” this month, and that’s due to his personal determination to succeed, his increase in aerobic fitness and his ability to address any issues presented and change bad habits. I am sure there will be the odd setback which we will overcome, but right now we are on track to achieve Tim’s goals.

Tim’s % Body Fat… Tim is already beginning to see a reduction in body fat, great result Tim!
Months Tim (the client): It has been a really interesting month…difficult in many ways but also interesting and beneficial. I feel like a car that has been kept in a garage for years under a sheet and has been rolled out as the owner has decided to use it again. The car isn’t going to run smoothly straight away and there are going to be issues and things to sort out. I have had a few little physical niggles that my newfound activity has brought to the fore but I have persisted and am getting the better of these. I have noticed that as I am more active I am hungrier than before with a tendency to eat more unhealthy food and think it is OK because I have been for a run… Need to get to grips with this if my body fat graph is ever going to drop! Also I had a dizzy spell on one run and Liz and I isolated that I drink too much coffee and hardly any water. We have sorted this out and I feel much better! I don’t think I could do this without a personal trainer… on a run day I would definitely find reasons not to go for a run if I didn’t have Liz to answer to. Also I wouldn’t have the support and advice available on my little body aches and pains and diet etc. Running 13 miles still seems an unreal distant dream so only thinking about the next run…up to 4 miles now! fiveways directory December 2018

QUIZ QUESTION EIGHT: In which fictional land was it always winter but never Christmas?
fiveways This local community-run shop seeks volunteers...
HOLLINGDEAN WHOLEFOODS... Tucked away in the Coachwerks building on Hollingdean Terrace, just a few minutes’ walk from Fiveways, a dedicated group of volunteers is working to bring fresh, affordable and healthy food to our community. And they could use your help. Hollingdean Wholefoods is a kind of health food TARDIS. It can’t travel in time, but it does manage to pack an impressive array of food, drink, herbs, spices and household essentials into its compact, cosy shop space. There has been a health food shop in Coachwerks for several years, but earlier this summer the couple who were running it had to leave Brighton. Faced with 31 the sad possibility of the shop closing for good, a dozen members of the community banded together to keep it running. “We really didn’t want to see it go,” says Rachel Entwistle, one of the team who jumped on board to save the shop. “It’s such a wonderful resource for people in this area – a great place to do your shopping, to meet your neighbours, to support ethical producers/ local growers, and to cut down on wasteful packaging. I was happy to give a few hours of my week to keep it running.”

Whether you’re after classic Brighton-ish staples like Smorl’s hummus, avocados and British quinoa, or everyday items like flour, dish soap and organic veg, the shop has you covered. There is a variety of fresh bread most days from the Flint Owl Bakery. Particularly popular is the extensive range of scoop & weigh items – rice, nuts, grains, dried fruit, oats, pasta and more. The shop even offers a 5% discount to customers who bring their own containers for scoop & weigh purchases or refills of detergents, shampoos, etc. “It’s a really convenient way to buy cheaply,” says one customer. “I love that I can bring jars and bags from home, get them filled with delicious and healthy ingredients, and save money by doing it.” Hollingdean Wholefoods is open Monday to Saturday, and they are keen to attract more volunteers to help behind the counter. “If you’ve got a few hours free during your week, we’d love to hear from you,” says Leila Randall, another of the core volunteer team. “We’ll train you up and get you into the swing of things. It’s easy enough, really. And to thank you for your time we’ll give you a 25% volunteer discount on all your shopping!” If you’re interested in being a part of this team effort – and saving some money on your groceries – send an email to hollingdean_wholefoods@riseup. net or just stop by Hollingdean Wholefoods at 19A Hollingdean Terrace, BN1 7HB. fiveways directory December 2018
