QUIZ QUESTION ONE:

a unique, deeply personal gift

07798 627035

Which book begins “Christmas wouldn’t be Christmas without any presents”?

fiveways Meet an actor who has returned to her first love of painting...

FIVEWAYS FACE – ANNA DAVIS Anna Davis is a portrait artist and actor, and lives on Stanford Avenue. She played Lady Tara in Emmerdale from 1997 to 2002 under her stage name of Anna Brecon and won the Most Popular Newcomer Award at the 1998 National Television Awards. How long have you lived in Fiveways? Nine years now. When my husband and I first moved down to Brighton, we did the typical London thing - we hit the sea and decided we had to live on top of the beach. Six years and two kids later, we moved from Kemp Town up to Fiveways and we love it here. Did you enjoy your time in Emmerdale? It seems a lifetime ago, but yes! I was working with some very talented people and my character was a real gift to play: witty, bitchy and with a penchant for rolling in the hay with her underlings - what wasn’t there to enjoy? For an actor in their twenties, it was a great adventure, but it would be a whole different challenge to do it now. What led to your change of career? All I ever wanted to do, as a child, was to be an artist but I had an unhappy time at art college. I fell into acting by accident, when someone dropped out of an amateur production. I stepped in and fell head over heels with acting and being a part of a theatrical company. I’ve loved all the challenges and the absurdities of being an actor but, a couple of years ago, I found a beautiful charcoal life-drawing in a charity shop on the London Road and it echoed to me the kind of work that I had been striving towards as an art student. I bought it and asked my husband for life-drawing classes for my birthday present and fell into the safe and supportive arms of Debbie Hinks, who teaches at the Hummingbird Studios. I came out of my first class in tears of joy at finding my first love again and I’ve not stopped painting since. Tell us about your art... I guess it’s a natural thing for an actor, whose passion is people and bringing their stories to life, to shift medium and turn to portraiture. I use acrylics on large canvases to create bold but very nuanced works that use a wide-ranging palette to draw out the subtleties of light and tone. It is a huge honour to have someone put their trust in you and to sit for their portrait. It is their work, not mine, and I never forget that. Where can we see your work? I was lucky enough to be approached, earlier in the year, by Bailey Contemporary Arts in the Kings Road Arches, to exhibit in a group exhibition there. They have retained some of my work on permanent display, which I’m delighted about. What do you like to do when you’re not working? I’m usually found at Preston Lawn Tennis Club or on the touchline of a windswept football pitch, cheering on an offspring or two. If I’m left to my own devices, though, I like nothing better than a rummage through the antiques shops of Kemp Town, a good film at the Komedia and lunch in the North Laines, what could be better?

BRIGHTON LIONS CLUB PROJECT WENCESLAS Brighton Lions Club is launching Project Wenceslas, a campaign to help combat fuel poverty in Brighton and Hove.

People who receive the annual Winter Fuel Payment and feel they do not need it are invited to donate the amount to Brighton Lions, who can assure that every penny will go towards alleviating fuel poverty. Fuel poverty has increased mainly due to rising energy prices and more people die from cold housing than die on the roads each year. Most deaths occur among people aged 65 or over. Donations can be made by credit/debit cards through Brighton Lions Club’s website at: www.brightonlions.org.uk or cheques payable to Brighton Lions Club should be sent to the club at Lions Dene, The Deneway, Brighton, BN1 5AZ. People sending cheques are asked to confirm that their donations may be treated as Gift Aid so that the value of the donation can be increased by 25%.

fiveways Rosie Greenaway visits The Cleveland Arms in Cleveland Road...

THE WELCOMING ARMS OF THE CLEVELAND If you’ve spent much time living around Fiveways, you’ll be well acquainted with the old pub gentrification routine. Photo by Rosie Greenaway

Gastropubs, glossy watering holes - whatever you call the metamorphosis of the beloved public house, the bottom line is that the disorienting patterned carpets are long gone, along with every carvery-esque morsel of disappointing grub. And the latest in a run of Fiveways boozer revivals is The Cleveland Arms. It’s been under the watchful eye of Sarah and Jamie since June, and their treatment of the interior is refreshing. The space has been opened up by stripped floorboards, soothing blue-grey hues on the lower wood panelling and crisp white paint on the upper walls. On each table there are individual vases of fresh flowers. But while the décor might have evolved and the menu might have upped its game, this still feels like a pub for the everyday drinker, the Sunday roaster, the darts competitor and the board games player. It’s a true local, for the locals. On a need-to-know-basis, they serve goblets of Brighton Gin. Say no more. And what can you expect to eat? Well, if you’re a meat feaster or a seafood

Fish tempura and wasabi pea tartare lover you’ll have your pick of the usual pub classics, but peppered amongst them are a few star dishes: fragrant moules marinière; ham hock, pickled cucumber and pomegranate mixed leaf salad with honey-mustard dressing; pan-fried prawns and chorizo in a rich tomato sauce with charred toast; and chicken caesar croquettes. Neatly presented on a wooden board, my highlight is the fish tempura and wasabi pea tartare. The tender white chunks of Icelandic haddock are coated in fluffy batter and served with a daring kick of wasabi. It’s a Marmite situation; you’ll either dig this dish or you won’t, but it gets my personal seal of approval. A cold night demands a hearty main, so I opt for the lentil and vegetable sausages: one of two vegetarian main courses. It has to be said that vegan sausages are of a consistency that is notoriously tricky to hold together. Were it not for the embracing nest of crushed new potatoes, roasted vegetables and red wine jus, I might object to the way the sausages crumble apart, but the flavours overtake any potential disappointment. Smoky and substantial, this is an excellent dish with which to segue your appetite from summer into winter, and the perfect comfort food for the dark nights of December. fiveways Our book review from Gary Mepsted...

NOTES ON MY FAMILY by Emily Critchley EVERYTHING WITH WORDS, PAPERBACK, £8.99 I doubt it’ll come as any surprise to you, but my exposure to Young Adult fiction has been both limited and largely negative. I wrote, scathingly, about the genre an issue or two back. Now, in what might be seen as a violent volteface, I’m about to heartily recommend a novel which has just been published under the YA banner, Notes on My Family by Emily Critchley. I should immediately declare my relationship to both author and book. Emily is my partner and I’ve watched ‘Notes’ blossom from tentative opening pages to published novel. The book was originally conceived as a novel for adults but, as all writers know, the work has a way of finding its true destination. The foregoing review is written entirely without bias. The author, and my readers, would expect nothing less. The novel’s greatest strength lies in its central character, confused and alienated Louise Coulson (Lou) who witnesses the breakdown of her family through a series of surreal crises, not least seeing her mum burning the family photographs in a saucepan on the living-room floor and setting the carpet alight. To escape her bizarre and unhappy existence, Lou has created an alternative reality for herself and another set of parents, Annabel and Neil, both successful architects who live beside a beautiful loch. There’s also an adorable dog, Renzo. Each of the novel’s cast of characters is marvellously evoked. These people are real and authentic, not there to serve the author’s greater purpose, as is the case with so much YA fiction whose raison d’être is to draw attention to some societal injustice or whatever; nothing wrong with that of course, but a novel needs to work as a novel and here ‘Notes’ succeeds admirably. The story is tight as a drum, Lou’s take on life is both humorous and often painfully acute. You can’t help but admire her fortitude as she wanders through life in an autistic haze, for Lou is clearly somewhere on the autistic spectrum but, wisely, the author has chosen an oblique approach

here. This is, avowedly, not a novel which seeks to explore the subject head-on. Lou’s autism is merely a facet of her personality and the hectic, almost baroque world she inhabits. Notes on My Family is far too entertaining and accomplished to only be read by teens. It’s a novel for everyone seeking a warm, wise and witty tale about a young girl struggling to make sense of life, something which very few of us succeed at. Gary Mepsted

fiveways A new exhibition at Brighton Museum...

GLUCK...ART & IDENTITY BRIGHTON MUSEUM & ART GALLERY, UNTIL 11 MARCH 2018 The 20th century artist Gluck (1895-1978), now also recognised as a trailblazer of gender fluidity, is the subject of a major new exhibition at Brighton Museum & Art Gallery. Gluck: Art & Identity brings together around 30 rarelyseen paintings and extensive personal ephemera. Born Hannah Gluckstein into a wealthy Jewish family, Gluck attended art school in London and ran away to Cornwall with fellow students during World War I. The artist mixed with the Newlyn School of painters, and was sketched by Alfred Munnings smoking a pipe in Roma-style dress, before adopting the name Gluck and creating a controversial masculine identity incorporating men’s tailoring, barber-cut short hair and a mannish demeanour. Gluck, who demanded “no prefix, suffix, or quotes”, became known in the inter-war years for portraits, landand seascapes and stage scenes, and in the 1930s for floral paintings - influenced by society florist Constance Spry with whom the artist was having a relationship. Having developed a cult following among collectors and celebrities in the second half of the 20th century, many Gluck paintings are today owned by private individuals and seldom exhibited. This major public exhibition brings together key works like The Devil’s Altar (1932), which depicts Constance’s favourite flower Brugmansia and was donated to Brighton in 1953 in an innovative three-tiered frame developed by the artist. Other paintings in the exhibition range from The Pine Cone, painted in 1919, to Credo (Rage, Rage Against the Dying of the Light) of 1970/3. Key inclusions are the signature Lilies (1932-36), which perfectly complemented the fashionable all-white interiors of its time, the striking nude Primavera (1920) and the almost-black The Punt

(c1937), which depicts Gluck lying with lover Nesta Obermer in a punt on Plumpton’s pond. Taking the experimental approach of a forensic investigation, the exhibition also presents other surviving evidence of Gluck’s life - including clothing (mostly worn by girlfriends and preserved by Gluck), accessories, photographs, press cuttings and personal ephemera. This was largely donated by Gluck to Brighton & Hove’s collections, a year before the artist’s death. For further information visit: brightonmuseums.org.uk/gluck.

A LONG DISTANCE RUNNING GLOSSARY... HOW TO TALK THE TALK The marathon season is looming, so make sure you’re fluent in run-speak. Gait - How your feet strike the ground when you run, i.e. she’s got the gait of a gazelle / inebriated donkey.

A course profile

LSD - Unrelated to hallucinogens, or 60s culture, but long slow runs: the staple of every marathon runner. Fartlek - Not as rude as it sounds. It’s Swedish, and means randomly changing your run pace. Intervals - A training approach that involves running a number of repetitions of determinate duration with fixed recovery intervals. Yes, it can be as tedious as it sounds. Recovery - Not rehab for runners, but rest between intervals. Always welcome, never long enough! Negative Split - Denotes a pacing strategy in which the second half of a run is faster than the first half. It’s generally a positive thing in the running fraternity. Elevation - The total vertical distance of any route, i.e. how hilly. Top tip - if you convert to metres it sounds much lower, i.e. 458 metres or 1502 feet.

PB - A personal best time. Note, never assume a PB is current. They have no time limit, so could date from the last decade. PW - A personal worst time. Will trigger endless performance analysis, deep depression and another race entry. Bonked - Not what you might be thinking, and not a reason to take up running. This means running out of energy during a race due to inadequate fuelling. Fuelling - Note, unlike ordinary folk, runners don’t eat and drink, they fuel and hydrate...and they carb load.

Course profile - A diagram which shows the elevations of the race. Warning! Any event with a profile probably has lot of elevation. Consider carefully whether you really want to see it beforehand!

Carb loading - Sounds scientific but actually means eating a lot of things you wouldn’t ordinarily eat for a few days before an event to increase your body’s energy reserves. Bring on the cake! Tapering - Aka pre-event rest. During the taper, training is reduced and fuelling, hydration, inactivity and carb loading are increased proportionately. A runner must be granted the freedom of the sofa and the fridge during this period. QUIZ QUESTION SEVEN : Who was the Christmas cracker invented by?

fiveways Welcome to the December edition of Fiveways Gardens...

IN THE GARDEN...DECEMBER 2017 After a few years of very mild winters, we’re now forecast a cold one so it’s worth reminding you of the need to protect your more tender plants in pots. As they are above ground, the roots can freeze, doing serious damage or killing the plant. Remove all trays from under containers, so plants aren’t sitting in water (or ice), and for the tender specimens, wrap pots in bubble wrap or layers of horticultural fleece and if possible put pots in the most sheltered bits of your garden. Keep bird feeders topped up, especially if it does prove to be a cold winter, and don’t forget to keep fresh water available too. A shallow container for a bird bath is a worthwhile thing to have on view from the house, to watch our feathered friends having a splash about. Gardening is not always a tempting prospect at this time of year. Time, then, to decide whether to tidy the garden or leave it as it is. Traditionally, autumn is the time for clearing away what remains of your herbaceous perennials in your borders, raking up leaves from beds and so on. These days, however, more of us have become aware of how important urban gardens are for all sorts of wildlife. With other natural habitats

A complete range of ethical tree services provided by a qualified and experienced Arborist Please call Iain on: 01273 275726 thearborbarber.co.uk info@thearborbarber.co.uk

diminishing, it’s widely considered a good idea to leave much of the gardening tidying till spring when things start to warm up. Maybe you’re not mad about creepy crawlies, but I bet many of you have a soft spot for ladybirds. Not only are they very pretty for a beetle, but they can also devour up to 5,000 aphids during their lifetime. You can help them hibernate by providing a cosy habitat where they can hide out until spring. If buying a ladybird house is a step too far, you could just tie together small bundles of hollow stems and place around your garden. If you prefer things to look tidy, consider leaving a specific area of your garden alone, but tidying the rest. Reedging the lawn will go a long way to making the whole garden look generally neater. Leaf litter and a stone or log pile in your designated wild area will still provide a winter home for plenty of beetles, frogs and newts. Www.wildlife-gardening.co.uk and the gardening bit of the BBC website are good online resources or hunt out the Ken Thompson book, “No Nettles Required”. Other Christmas present ideas for gardening friends or family include vouchers to attend one of The Garden House courses, or one of the brilliant courses run by the local Permaculture Trust. Wishing you all a merry Christmas Best wishes, Lisa
