QUIZ QUESTION ONE:
Which two countries are located closest to the North Pole?
fiveways An update from a local group‌
NEWS FROM THE FRIENDS OF HOLLINGBURY & BURSTEAD WOODS Friends of Hollingbury & Burstead Woods invite you to a free talk on Saturday 25th April to hear about the work of the East Sussex Wildlife Rescue Ambulance Service. The talk will be held at the Brian Foster Environment Centre, which is located behind Dorothy Stringer School and accessed from Stringer Way which runs across the school playing fields from the top of Balfour Road to Draxmont Way. Vehicle access is from Draxmont Way, via Surrenden Road (turn left just below Varndean College). The talk and slides will begin at 2:30, followed by free homemade refreshments (donations gratefully accepted). Afterwards you are welcome to stay on for our short AGM and hear about the work our volunteers undertake in the local woods: Burstead in Hollingdean, and Hollingbury, sandwiched between the park in Ditchling Road and the Roedale allotments. Although we seldom come across injured animals in our woods we do see lots of creatures as we go about our work in the woods and glades. From the aptly named white letter hair-streak butterfly feeding on the thistles on the edge of the woods, the pink-coloured elephant hawk-moth on the rosebay willow-herb, the voles and frogs in the long grass of the glades, the solitary mining bees on the chalk bank, and the robins and wrens making their nests in the ivy or upturned roots of the trees that were blown over in the great storm of 1987, to name but a few. The devastation caused by that storm and the desire to restore these woods was the reason why concerned residents got together to form the friends group, and all these years later we are still maintaining and improving the woods for both nature and visitors alike.
Why not take a few moments to stroll through the woods to see the wild daffodils we planted, or the violets under the hedgerows, or to enjoy the snow-like spectacle of the white flowers of the blackthorn. On our March work session we saw this seven-spot ladybird emerging from hibernation and witnessed the blue tits busily gathering nesting materials; perhaps this spring they will use one of the nest boxes we put up. For the latest information, and to check whether the coronavirus will impact on our talk and AGM please follow us on Facebook or check our website www.fhbw.org.uk

PRESTON CIRCUS Motor coach halted at the semaphore traffic signals, at the corner of London Road and Beaconsfield Road, in 1929. Following the introduction of similar signals at the bottom of West Street in December 1927, Brighton Council decided in late 1928 to install them at Preston Circus. Controlled by the policeman in his central box, they came into use here in March 1929. Thanks to the Regency Society for this image from their photographic archives, The James Gray Collection. fiveways A photo competition from Hannah at The Pet Shed…
DO MORE WITH YOUR DOG... In this third instalment of “Doing more with your dog” I would like you to set up an Instagram account for your dog and find unique spots for Instagram photo-shoots. Your favourite walk, view or a city landmark make great pictures and who needs an excuse to take more pictures of your dog eh? If you already have an Instagram account for your pet (Bourbon does – see her at @Bourbonthedachshund) you can still plan outings that are a bit different and would make great locations. You can also check out a few celebrity dog Instagram accounts such as @spaniellife (29.2k followers) and ladybelleofberkeley (8.4k followers) or search #dogsofinstagram to get ideas. You could take pictures in local dog-friendly shops and cafés (supporting small businesses), take selfies with your dog or funny moments at home, such as nap or bath time. Get creative and involve family members too. For an extra incentive tag the shop @thepetshed (don’t forget to follow us!) with the hashtag #domorewithyourdog and #fivewaysdirectory and your picture will be entered into a prize draw for a bundle of dog-related goodies. Entries will be counted up to and including 14th April and the winning photo
Bourbon the dachshund in Preston Park (Instagram @Bourbonthedachshund)
will be included in the next issue of the Fiveways Directory. Runners-up will also receive a small thank you so get snapping!! Have a pet-related question? Drop a line to hannah@ thepetshedbrighton.co.uk or pop in and see her at The Pet Shed, 100 Preston Drove, BN1 6EW.

EASTER EGG HUNT
I SEE THE SEA
On Easter Sunday, Friends of Preston Park will once again be running our hugely popular Easter event for children aged 12 and under.
Looking for something to get you in the mood for spring?
Their task will be to track down the answers to questions about interesting features of Preston Park in order to win a chocolate egg (we’ll have a vegan option). We’ll also have a drawing competition and face painting. The charge is just £1 per child. We start at 10.30 and close at 2.30. Note that, unlike previous years, the event will be held in the north of the park, near the Chalet Café. Friends of Preston Park (In case of cancellation due to coronavirus, please check with the organisers whether this event is still taking place.)
Working from Home?
I See the Sea is a must-catch new exhibition at Jubilee Library (Jubilee Street, BN1 1GE), starting 5th April until 19th, featuring paintings and 2D work. The exhibition has been organised and managed by local artist Annabel Wyatt-Dunford, featuring an exciting group of emerging creatives including Ella Husbands, Johanna Cragg and Lily Rigby. I See the Sea aims to encapsulate the moment of excitement and wonder when you visit seaside towns from the city and finally “spot the ocean on the horizon” for the first time. Jubilee Library remains a great place to drop by and see artworks, with its coffee shop and accessibility for a wide range of visitors. Annabel Wyatt-Dunford says: “It was a great choice to host an exhibition at the library given its central location and easily accessible nature; I hope the artwork appeals to a wider range of visitors, whether they’re into the arts or not.” This spring sees the start of Fiveways’ arty period with the Artists Open Houses Festival kicking off once again. I See the Sea offers a great entry point into the artistic offering from Fiveways as well as across Brighton and Hove.

News from the council…
EXPERTS SUPPORT SWIFT ACTION TO WILL WRITING PROTECT BIRDS FORTNIGHT Thirteen local will writers are offering their expertise during Will Writing Fortnight, 11-22 May 2020, in return for a donation to Martlets hospice.
‘Swift bricks’ will be incorporated in new developments across Brighton & Hove to help halt the decline of the distinctive birds.
For many people, thinking about what happens after they’ve gone isn’t easy; however, having a profession17 ally written will can offer peace of mind. Having a will is particularly important for families, parents, cohabiting couples and for those with dependants who are unable to care for themselves. The Martlets Will Writing Fortnight booking period for appointments is open from 13th April until 8th May; anyone can set up an appointment with a local will writer by selecting from the list of supporting companies at www. martlets.org.uk/give-in-your-will. Booking through the Martlets scheme offers a significant discount on will writing, as the donation required is only £150 for a single will and £200 for joint wills.
The bird boxes are designed to look like bricks, but feature a small hole where swifts can enter and build their nests. Although known as swift bricks, they can be used by a variety of other birds. At a meeting of the council’s Tourism, Equalities, Communities & Culture Committee in March, members For further information, or for a free copy of our Gifts in agreed to a new planning condition which will see swift Wills booklet, visit www.martlets.org.uk/give-in-your-will boxes and bee bricks incorporated in most new developor contact Gary on 01273 718778 or ments in the city. Bee bricks have been required for new email gary.moyle@martlets.org.uk build developments since November last year. Swifts are urban birds which make their nests in rooftops or in old buildings, after flying over 6,000 miles from Africa in the spring. However, modern building methods, along with the demolition of old buildings, have reduced their access to rooftops, resulting in a serious decline in numbers. The council’s new planning condition will require swift bricks to be incorporated in all new developments that are five metres high and above.

LOOKING AFTER THE LITTLE THINGS If you are getting out into the garden this spring remember to look after the little things - our insects. These are dying at an alarming rate (75% in the last 25 years). Insects are inextricably intertwined with our fate and that of the planet: as a food source for birds and mammals, as pollinators for food production, as waste recyclers and as soil improvers; their loss is proving catastrophic. We call them ‘pests’ and we use ‘pesticides’ to protect our plants. Our supermarket and garden centre shelves are filled with these poisons, killing not only the ‘pest’ but killing bees, other insects, contaminating the19 soil, water, fish, humans and other animals. In France these are all banned for amateur use. Stop buying them and they will stop stocking them. Let’s make our gardens a refuge for nature. We may come to love the little critters; in the meantime there’s lots you can do without chemicals: www.pan-uk.org/gardening-without-pesticides/ Save our insects by signing this petition: www.pan-uk. org/take-pesticide-products-off-supermarket-shelves/ Learn to love insects - read ‘The Garden Jungle’ by Dave Coulson.

fiveways A book review from Gary Mepsted...
“HERE WE ARE” BY GRAHAM SWIFT Hardback, Scribner, £14.99 Apologies for my absence last month, but this month’s choice is an absolute corker. After giving us the miniaturist masterpiece that was “Mothering Sunday” (please read it if you haven’t already done so), Graham Swift retains the short form with “Here We Are”. The novel (novella?) is set largely in Brighton in 1959. The theatre at the end of the pier is enjoying a fantastic summer season. Ronnie is a brilliant young magician; Evie is his beautiful assistant and Jack Robinson is the show’s charismatic compère. All three are about21 to be caught up in a series of events which will have unforeseen consequences for them all. Without giving too much away, love and betrayal are the main themes. This beautiful book is a magic trick itself, so deft is it in withholding, and then revealing, its secrets, and blending humour and tragedy to such devastating effect. As with Mothering Sunday, Swift is truly brilliant at handling his material, never resorting to overindulgence or unnecessary expansiveness. The novel is lean and brisk of pace, and its transitions are marvellously well executed. This is perhaps best seen in Swift’s use of time. The story moves neatly between the pre and post-war period, from one transformative summer into the present with a breathtaking economy that many contemporary novelists could - indeed, should - learn from. Here We Are exemplifies the axiom that less is more. Its concision is integral to its considerable charm and power. I do subscribe to the idea that it’s much more difficult to write a great novel than it is to write a great short story. (Be sure to check the author’s collection, “England and Other Stories”.) The book’s subtlety might be its undoing for some readers, though. The story isn’t opaque, but you occasionally have to work a little to find, and enjoy, the tasty truffles of nuance and meaning. This is definitely not a negative as far as I’m concerned.

Maugham said, “To write simply is as difficult as to be good.” Swift’s prose is simple, in the sense that it doesn’t erect barriers between the reader, the story and the characters, all of whom we immediately bond with. Thinking about simplicity when writing, I’m reminded of a very, very much larger, and much anticipated, novel which has just been published whose prose, for me at least, is the equivalent of cold porridge. Graham Swift is an extraordinary writer and Here We Are is a testament to his brilliance. Gary Mepsted

fiveways Accommodation in Abbey Road for families with children in hospital…
RONALD MCDONALD HOUSE Ronald McDonald House Charities UK provides free accommodation and support to families with seriously ill children in hospital.
There are currently 11 houses across the UK, just a short walk away from the partnered NHS hospitals which provide specialist care for children. Equipped with communal kitchen/living areas, laundry facilities, Wi-Fi, en-suite bedrooms and hospital line phones, the houses provide families with everything they need. Parents are able to have their other children stay with them at the house and have friends and family visit them whenever they wish, making it a true ‘home away from home’. Here in Brighton, we have an 18-bedroom house. Working alongside the Royal Alexandra Children’s Hospital and the Trevor Mann Baby Unit, we are able to accommodate around 200 families from all over Sussex, Surrey, Kent and even further afield each year. In 2019, families stayed with us for an average of 26 nights. In 2017, Poppy’s family stayed with us for 356 days after she was born with Gastroschisis. Without our house in Brighton, the family would have had to make a 45-minute journey to and from the hospital each day just to see their little girl. Spending a fortune on petrol, they 26

would have the added stress of not being able to be at the hospital as much as they wanted, especially if there was an emergency in the early hours of the morning. Staying with us completely removed those worries. They were able to be as close to Poppy as possible, along with their other daughter and Poppy’s big sister, Grace. The family have been back to visit the house many times since being discharged, to meet up with the House Team and let them know how well they are all getting on now back at home. Poppy is doing remarkably well; she is almost three and will be starting nursery this year. On their last visit, the family expressed some kind words about the house and charity: ‘’Truly, being so close to Poppy in hospital impacted her recovery. This charity provides a beautiful, beautiful service. It’s an integral part of a child’s life in hospital – keeping their family close. The impact having these houses makes is heart-warming.’’ For more information, visit rmhc.org.uk/our-houses/ brighton-house/
fiveways News of a council consultation…
WOULD YOU ADOPT A TREE? Residents are being asked if they would like to adopt and care for a tree in their area. Locals may also have the chance to become trained tree wardens and check trees for possible diseases. The ideas are included in a council consultation as part of a strategy to save and develop the city’s historic tree population. City Parks, the council’s open spaces team, also want the public’s views on planting more trees, off-street parking, dropped kerbs and tackling tree-destroying infections like elm disease and ash dieback. Looking after trees for future generations Councillor Anne Pissaridou, chair of the council’s Environment, Transport & Sustainability Committee, said: “Trees are one of the most valued and loved assets managed by the council, so we must make sure they are looked after properly now and for future generations. They are also an extremely important part of helping the council’s pledge to become a carbon neutral city by 2030.” The consultation was launched in mid-March and it is due to be open for six weeks.
Councillor Pissaridou added: “It’s really important we hear people’s views on our tree strategy, so I’m encouraging everyone to get involved. We want to understand what’s important to our residents, what they want us to be doing more of and what, if anything, they can do to help.” The consultation includes about 10 questions and should take no longer than 15 minutes to complete. The strategy is 48 pages long and will appeal to people who are more technically minded. There will be a much shorter summary of the strategy for easier reading. You can find the consultation at consultations. brighton-hove.gov.uk, and there is also a link to the Tree Strategy. fiveways directory April 2020
