WELCOME TO THE FIVEWAYS DIRECTORY! In our April edition we have details of the 10th Brighton Marathon – good luck to anyone participating, especially if you’ve run them all. Our Fiveways Face this month is children’s author Paul Stewart, who is possibly best known for his Edge Chronicles series, cocreated with another Fiveways resident, illustrator Chris Riddell. We also have news of this year’s chosen City Reads book, Let Me Be Like Water, and Hannah from The Pet Shed has more good advice for pet owners – this time on pets with health problems. If you’re looking for a way to entertain the children, the Friends of Preston Park are organising an Easter Egg Hunt on Easter Sunday. Have a good April and Happy Easter! QUIZ QUESTION ONE:

Onychophagia is a common habit particularly for many near the end of a sporting event. What is Onychophagia?

fiveways Meet a prize-winning children’s author who lives in Fiveways...

FIVEWAYS FACE...PAUL STEWART Paul Stewart lives in Fiveways and is a children’s book writer. Many of his books are co-created with another Fiveways resident, illustrator Chris Riddell. The first book in their Far Flung Adventures series, Fergus Crane, won the Nestlé Smarties Gold Prize in 2004 and the final book in their Edge Chronicles series, The Descenders, has just been published. How long have you lived in Fiveways? 27 years and counting... How did you start writing for children? As a boy, I was always writing. I made a series of miniature picture books for my little sister about a troubled snail called Gulliver. I filled a notebook with characters and plots based on bad puns… At university, I continued to write, but by this time, for adults. Then, during the 80s, I was teaching in Sri Lanka when the civil war broke out. Traumatized by things I witnessed, I abandoned an adult novel I’d been writing and withdrew into the child-like fantasy world I’d created all those years earlier. The Thought Domain became my first published children’s book.

Tell us more about your books… After that, I continued to write – everything from fantasy to football, horror to puzzle adventures, as well as numerous short stories. (Plus one adult book, Trek, the tragic true account of four Brits who, in 1955, attempted to drive from Nairobi to London in a Morris Traveller, but got stranded in the middle of the Sahara.) With the children’s fiction, my publishers would find illustrators. The results, however, were mixed. Occasionally there was little similarity between what I had described and what was drawn. So it was wonderful to meet Chris at the nursery our sons attended. We subsequently collaborated on books for children of all ages, from the Rabbit and Hedgehog picture books to Wyrmeweald, a YA trilogy about cowboys and dragons. Working so closely on the books meant that words and pictures always went together seamlessly. The Edge Chronicles encapsulates our working method. Chris gave me a map he’d drawn, saying: ‘This is the world. Let’s explore it.’ The series is now 13 books long, comprising five individual sagas. This year we celebrate the 21st anniversary of the publication of the first chronicle: Beyond the Deepwoods. What is your favourite children’s book? The Phantom Tollbooth by Norton Juster; illustrations by Jules Feiffer. This clever, often hilarious, novel explores language and the way we see the world. I loved reading it as a boy; loved reading it to my kids, and look forward to reading it to my grandchildren! What are you working on at the moment? A book about a bear who believes he is brilliant at everything, but is sadly deluded. At the moment his name is Bogus. But I might change it to Boris… For more information on The Edge Chronicles, visit edgechronicles.co.uk.

QUIZ QUESTION TWO:

For some beginners, Pratt, Shelby and Windsor can be confusing examples of what?

fiveways News of this year’s City Reads book...

CITY READS 2019

“LET ME BE LIKE WATER” BY S.K. PERRY City Reads is an annual citywide reading festival, when one book is selected for everyone to read. This year it runs from 23rd April to 12th May as part of the Brighton Festival and the chosen title is “Let Me Be Like Water” by S.K. Perry, who at 29 years old is the youngest writer ever chosen. Sarah Perry was born in Croydon but currently lives in Leeds and is working on her second novel. She said: “I have a deep love for Brighton and Hove and feel really moved that, through City Reads, “Let Me Be Like Water” will reach more of the city’s readers. It’s such an honour, and I really can’t wait!” In the book, songwriter Holly is in a state of limbo, having impulsively escaped to Brighton following the death of her boyfriend. The solitude she had so craved in London leaves her feeling stranded and alone in her grief. It is when she meets Frank, a retired gay magician, that the tide begins to turn. Gradually, as she is introduced to his eclectic group of friends, she starts to heal. The book is simultaneously

about nothing and everything: about the humdrum yet extraordinariness of everyday life; of lost and new connections; of loneliness and friendship. You can see S.K. Perry live at the Brighton Festival in conversation with writer Bridget Minamore (Sunday 12 May, Brighton & Hove High School, 5.30pm, £8, tickets from brightonfestival.org). fiveways Hannah from the Pet Shed gives her advice for pet owners...

PET PROBLEM CORNER... We often have pets with health problems popping into the shop for a treat after a visit to the vet. Many require diet restrictions and we’re often asked what would be suitable. Fortunately the majority of our treats and chews are natural so it is easy to suggest something. My dog suffers from pancreatitis. What would be a suitable treat? Pancreatitis is inflammation of the pancreas and vets advise a low fat diet. Many meats are naturally low fat but did you know that some more unusual meats such as ostrich and goat are also low in fat. Also, chews that have been “puffed” during cooking have a reduced fat content and vegetarian chews and treats are low fat. All of these are also great for obese dogs. My pet is getting old and is struggling to move, particularly first thing in the morning. Is there anything I can do? Just like humans, as dogs and cats get older joints become stiff and sometimes inflamed. Many pet foods contain what is known as the “joint pack” of glucosamine, chondroitin and MSM or you can buy this as a supplement (YuMove is a popular brand).

Some treats also contain naturally occurring glucosamine and chondroitin (beef tendons and air pipes for example) and many people swear by Golden Paste, a turmericbased food supplement that you can buy in store or make yourself at home. Obviously if your pet is getting old consult your vet and always check with them before using supplements, particularly if they are on any other medication. Golden Paste Recipe • ½ cup of ground turmeric • 1 cup water • 1/3 cup of coconut oil • 2-3 teaspoons (depending on your dog’s taste) of freshly ground black pepper 1. Place the turmeric and the water into a small pan. On a low heat, stir for 7-10 minutes until ingredients turn into a thick paste. 2. Add the coconut oil and ground black pepper. Stir until everything is incorporated. 3. Leave to cool then put in a glass jar in the fridge for use. Hannah is the current proud pet parent of 14 including her dog (Bourbon, a regular at her shop), three cats, Starsky the tortoise, two snakes, turkeys, chickens and guinea pigs. Have a pet related question? Drop a line to Hannah at thepetshed1@ gmail.com or pop in and see her at The Pet Shed, 100 Preston Drove, BN1 6EW.

fiveways Springtime in the woods...

NEWS FROM THE FRIENDS OF HOLLINGBURY & BURSTEAD WOODS In our March work session our volunteers braved the inclement weather and with heads down against the rain trudged up the main path through Burstead wood to the glade at the top that we created from a redundant golf tee a few years ago. By the time we reached the glade the rain had eased and, with the help of one of our volunteers who has her own scythe, the long grass was quickly cut and raked off to encourage the wildflowers that like the chalky alkaline soil. Nearby, just off the top path there is a patch of more acidic clay soil and we17 were pleased to see how well the gorse we planted last year was doing. After our much appreciated hot cuppa we carried out some maintenance to the trees we planted along the perimeter fence and started to collect litter on the north slope, but to quote the well-known song, “If you go down to the woods today you’re in for a big surprise” but not a very pleasant one! No cute teddy bears having a picnic but loads and loads of rubbish, broken glass, car parts, a sofa etc...

It was too much for our members to tackle so we’re asking the council’s Tidy-up Team volunteers to help us as part of the Keep Britain Tidy Great British Spring Clean event which runs from 22nd March - 23rd April. We will post the date of our litter clearance on our website (www.fhbw.org) once we have confirmed with the Tidy-up Team. We are pleased to announce that on 18th May we have a speaker from HK Hedgehogs to give us a presentation at our AGM. She will tell us all about hedgehogs and how we can help this once abundant mammal, which sadly is now in decline. She will bring an example of a feeding station, a mammal footprint monitor and some leaflets to take away and spread the word. The formal part of our AGM is short and starts at 2:30 followed by a break for refreshments including home-made cakes and a chance to look at HK Hedgehogs’ display board before settling down to learn how we can encourage hedgehogs back into our gardens. All welcome - details of the venue, the Brian Foster Environment Centre on the Dorothy Stringer school campus, will be on our website mentioned above, or email us at info@fhbw.org.uk. fiveways directory April 2019

QUIZ QUESTION FIVE:

Which antiquated nautical word for ‘old cable or rope’ now describes some foods we eat?

fiveways Gary Mepsted interviews a Sussex-based poet...

POET KAREN SMITH... After reviewing her glorious collection of verse, Schist, last month, Karen and I met up to chat about poetry in general and her own work in particular. The utterly delightful two hours we spent together is distilled below. I began by asking Karen about the evolution of Schist. It took many years to complete. I don’t write very quickly or prolifically. I knew I wanted to write about the coast, about landscape, and that served as a canvas to explore my childhood and family. The poem ‘Schist’ is inspired by Mullion Cove in Cornwall. There’s something about the quality of the light there. There was a large rock rising out of the sea that was at 21once beautiful and yet possessed a sense of foreboding. The poem ‘Schist’ came from that moment. I asked Karen if she thought that a poem is created by its author, or pre-exists and needs to be discovered, rather like a fossil. There’s definitely a large element of discovery, of having to dig into the subconscious, of being sensitive to what has caused you to catch a glimpse of something that might become a poem. Then there’s the hard graft in transforming the raw material into poetic form.

There’s a discomfort present, which I think is a good thing, that not being quite sure what you have, or what you’re dealing with. Karen also spoke about her working methodology... I draw on my experience of what I’ve read, of those elements in a work that have grabbed me and mean something to me personally. Reading can provide that fuel, that sustenance, to keep me working with my own material. Working with language is a pleasure, but when you’re writing there’s a lot of leg work involved, a lot of stumbling around. Sometimes a poem is abandoned because I don’t know how to fix it, but that’s part of being a writer and you have to accept it. I make notes for future poems that I will eventually write, or hope to, when the time to do so finally arrives. I asked Karen about those poets who had influenced her work... Plath has definitely been an influence, as have John Ashbery and other poets from The New York School. I try and read as widely as possible to discover poets who speak to me, like Emily Berry and Fiona Benson. My job as Cataloguer at The National Poetry Library gives me access to many new voices. Poetry is in a really healthy state at the moment, and I’m very heartened by that. Gary Mepsted fiveways directory April 2019

fiveways An annual event held by Hallifax Care...

GREAT CAKE AND JAM SALE Once again, Hallifax Care will be holding its Great Cake and Jam Sale on Friday 5th April between 9am and 4pm. The sale will be outside the Hallifax Care offices at 297a Ditchling Road. As usual, no cakes, jams or marmalades are priced and you can donate what you like to the nominated charities. This year they will be raising money for The Clock Tower Sanctuary and Sussex Voiceworks Community Choir. The Clock Tower Sanctuary receives thousands of visits from young people aged between 16 and 25 who have nowhere else to turn. They offer washing and laundry facilities, hot meals, confidence-building activities and help with accessing health services, benefits, accommodation, training and work. 25 Sussex Voiceworks is a community choir based in Shoreham and its members enjoy singing a wide variety of music. On June 29th the choir will be joining the girls of Brighton and Hove High School in a concert in Arundel Cathedral. The cake and jam sale has been greatly supported by the Fiveways community and last year raised over ÂŁ1,500 - this total is a credit to the generosity of the people around Fiveways and, of course, the staff and friends and relatives of Hallifax Care who make and bake such wonderful items.

One carer even takes a few days holiday before the sale and turns her home into a wonderful bakery! Hallifax Care Ltd is a family-run home care business providing a high standard of personal care enabling clients to live full, safe, independent lives in their own homes. For further information visit www.hallifaxcare.co.uk or ring 01273 542200. Please support this charity sale.

HOUSING PLAN AT VARNDEAN REJECTED... Brighton & Hove City Council’s Planning Committee refused on 6th March an outline application to build 10 residential dwellings on land at Varndean College, with new access from Surrenden Road. The site is part of a wider area, “Varndean Green”, which has been listed since November 2018 as an Asset of Community Value. The planning officer’s report said that the development would make a positive contribution to the city’s housing needs, including much needed affordable family housing, on a section of open space which is not used for sports, recreation or education purposes. The application proposed that 27 a new biodiversity reserve be created within the college campus to replace the existing butterfly reserve that would be lost. The council received 289 objections to the application and 27 letters of support. The main grounds for objection included loss of open space, loss of biodiversity, increased traffic and loss of views. Local councillors Ann Norman, Ken Norman, Nick Taylor, Lee Wares and Geoffrey Theobald all objected to the proposal. Sue Dibb from the Green Varndean group told the Planning Committee that the site is designated open space land, which includes an important butterfly haven that can’t be successfully relocated. It had taken five years for the small blue butterfly to be established there. She said the development would destroy strategic views of the city. Phil Harland, Principal of Varndean College, said that the application represented a unique opportunity to help the college achieve its aspirations. The current sports facilities are woefully inadequate, 40% of the curriculum is taught in temporary accommodation, there are 25 toilet cubicles for 1,600 students and a kitchen designed for 400 covers a day is now serving 1,200 covers.

L J‘s BARBERS 253e Ditchling Rd

01273 551270

Cllr Clare Moonan supported the application for “much-needed housing”. She said, “What is the alternative? We do need to build across the whole city.” She thought it was a sympathetic development which would be low impact, and said there was plenty of other green space in the area. However, Cllr Dick Page said he wasn’t convinced that there were strong enough reasons to take away the open space and Cllr Jackie O’Quinn said: “It really starts to set a precedent if you start building houses on school land.” The councillors voted five to four against the proposal, on the grounds of loss of open space and the impact on biodiversity and local views. A separate application to install an artificial turf pitch with floodlights at Varndean College was approved unanimously by the committee.

What is the Finnish name for Finland?

fiveways News from the council...

EASY-TO-USE RECYCLING A-Z... Brighton & Hove City Council have launched a new A to Z guide on how you can reduce, reuse, recycle or dispose of almost 180 different materials. The easy-to-use guide gives detailed explanations of what to do with everything from aerosols to mattresses and nappies to Tetra Paks, to ensure we’re all being as environmentally friendly as possible. The A to Z also gives advice on what to do with materials like rubble, plasterboards, asbestos, bathroom fittings, furniture, white goods, batteries and metal. In the case of plastic bags, first of all the A to Z 33 suggests using a reusable bag rather than a plastic one. If that can’t be done, the next suggestion is how to reuse the plastic bag, for instance as a bin liner. If that’s not possible, the guide says whether it can be recycled – plastic bags cannot – and then how it should be disposed of. The guide launches the council’s new drive to help residents recycle the correct things far more. In turn, this will help reduce the large number of recycling bins contaminated with non-recyclable products.

fiveways If you haven’t made a will yet, here is a great opportunity...

MARTLETS WILL WRITING FORTNIGHT It is estimated that over half of adults in the UK don’t have a will, potentially causing future difficulties for their families and loved ones. Martlets is encouraging local people to plan for the future and book a place for its Will Writing Fortnight, which runs from Monday 13th to 24th May. Twelve local will writing experts have offered to give their time free of charge to people in exchange for a donation to Martlets to help them provide care for people living with terminal illness and their families across the Brighton & Hove area. Setting up an 35 appointment is simple to organise, just choose from one of the will writers listed at www.themartlets.org.uk/givein-your-will and contact them during the booking period from 15th April to 10th May. Making a will during Will Writing Fortnight is an opportunity to get important plans in place while also making a real difference to patients and their families. THE GROUP For men and women who are single, there’s plenty to do in Brighton and Hove but it’s a matter of knowing what and where.

Thursday 30th May Thursday 27th June Thursday 18th July Thursday 8th and 29th August Thursday 12th September

Well, if you’re over 50, there’s a club which doesn’t assume that you’ll be staying home with your memories. Those who join The Group look forward, not back. They look forward to lunches, walks, theatre, cinema, quizzes, golf and holidays. It’s not a business. It’s a club for people who want to meet people. The Group has been introducing new friends to people in the Brighton area for ten years, and now it’s got a new venue. The Group doesn’t publish its venues. You’ll need to go to www.thegroup.org.uk and then call one of the contact numbers for a chat.
