LOCATION

Memories of Old Eastbourne

Long time Eastbourne resident Robert Edwardson met with Helen Stockton to unwrap his memories of a lifetime spent by the ‘beautiful seafront’

I

f you live in one place most of your life, it has to be somewhere special. Robert Edwardson was actually born in Hastings, but moved to Eastbourne in 1949, aged two, and he has remained there for the past seventy-one years. During this time, he has witnessed many changes, but the attractions of a beautiful coast on one side, and the downs on the other, have not diminished over time. His father was a police officer in

Eastbourne Borough Police Force which disbanded in 1967 becoming part of Sussex Police in 1968. Robert grew up as part of a close-knit community in the old town, where the majority of people lived in rented housing and everyone knew each other. The local corner shops on every street provided a hub. “You didn’t have to walk far for anything. It was a wonderful experience,” recalls Robert. The fact that shops were so close was particularly helpful to local children as they were often sent to run errands for their mothers. The local shopkeepers provided more than just goods however, being a source of information, chat, and even entertainment. Robert remembers two brothers who ran the newsagents on Albert Parade. “They were just like Morecombe and Wise, quick-witted with funny little quips.” Robert recounts the steam trains bringing smartly dressed day trippers to Eastbourne for some sea air and shopping. The Hailsham Flyer used to connect Hailsham to Eastbourne, before the Beeching cuts, although there was a single track from Polegate, where the drivers used to stop and exchange keys. Robert is grateful for the good education he received locally. There were only two infant schools in the 1950s and the children progressed

from these, to single-sex junior schools, with Robert attending St Mary’s Boys’ School in Green Street. He remembers the Head Teacher, Alan Clark, in particular, “He had a real appetite for learning. He was terrific.” Old Town High

Street

Eastbourne had the dubious honour of being the most bombed southern coastal town Robert sang in the Parish church of St Mary, and was a choir boy at St George’s Church, a church long since demolished. He remembers being selected at the school church parade. Robert sang at three services on Sundays and particularly enjoyed singing at weddings, not least because the choir got paid. They also got new, white,

starched surpluses on Easter Sunday, so they always looked well-presented. In a more sober reflection on his childhood, Robert saw the impact of two world wars on the town. “Every other house seemed to have a widowed lady and a younger daughter.” He felt that family dynamics were altered, with loss distancing parents from their children. It also affected the town’s infrastructure. Eastbourne had the dubious honour of being the most bombed southern coastal town due to planes dumping any remaining bombs before flying home, together with the deliberate bombing of the railway station because of its connection to the port at Newhaven. In the old town, there was a bomb site with shored-up walls, in Albert Parade. Every year,

Robert recounts the steam trains bringing smartly dressed day trippers to Eastbourne for some sea air and shopping up until the age of about ten Robert remembers, there was a civil air raid practise with sirens going off at 11.00am, something he found quite frightening. Robert, however, has also witnessed the rebuilding and updating of Eastbourne that followed the wartime destruction. When the library was built, in the 1960s, Robert was an apprentice in a joinery works and remembers the shelves, counters and racks being made.

He also recollects the Congress Theatre being built and Princess Margaret coming to open it. He remembers the Arndale Centre opening and people enjoying the arcade as, in addition to a range of shops, it provided shelter from the weather. Robert has seen many changes to Eastbourne over the years, but he has always felt an affinity with the town and the local community, which is why he has remained, living for forty-five years in the same house. “I’ve driven as far as Cornwall and I’ve never come across a town with such a beautiful seafront.” He still relishes the wider environment too, with the town nestling in the embrace of the South Downs, and he has no intention of moving. Eastbourne is where he will stay. l

t was a dark rainy October evening when Annie Jackson first set eyes on the cottage where she and her partner Nicholas Dawe and their son William now live. “I noticed that despite the weather, the cottage was light inside, which is unusual for a property of this early date.” Annie recalls what an exacting brief they had set themselves. “Ever since our decision to leave London for the country we were determined to find a house with character, history and a large garden for William. It seemed to take forever. Most cottages for sale were either near a noisy road, or too dark. We were looking for a quiet but not too remote location. When I drove up the driveway, I was sure this was the right home for us.” Nestling in a hamlet not too far from a pretty English village, the house was steeped in history. “When we first moved in, architectural historians threatened to pay us impromptu visits. The cottage was known to have had a

central open fireplace with smoke rising through a hole in the roof,” Annie smiles. At a later date the house was gifted to one of Cromwells’ Lieutenants and Roundhead soldiers occupied the property after he left. In 1912 it was extended to create two separate dwellings before being knocked back into one and modernised in the 1960s. It remained untouched until Annie and Nicholas moved in; it was still locked in a 1960s time warp. For years the couple were happy with the existing layout, and all they needed to change were the old carpets, replaced with limed oak

A vintage French larder cupboard provides useful extra storage in the downstairs cloakroom for paint tins and tennis racquets

floorboards. The electrics and plumbing also needed an upgrade. Lightening the beams with a lime wash was their most dramatic visual improvement. “I could not face the dust and disruption of sandblasting them,” says Annie. “The lime wash was comparatively easy although it is a labour of love because you have to work in small sections. You apply one coat of emulsion and then wipe it off with a rag while the paint is still wet. It accentuates the texture as well as lightening the whole room.”

To say Annie is extremely passionate about recycling would not be an exaggeration. Her coffee table is made from reclaimed timbers, the pendent lights came out of a sweet factory, one of her tall table lamp bases in the sitting room was converted from a fire extinguisher and doors throughout the house came mainly out of old French buildings or local reclamation yards; the front door came from an old bank building being demolished in the city. Many years buying stock for Holly Park, her interiors shop in Haslemere, took Annie on buying trips to France. Some of the most special esoteric decorative purchases have now found their way into their home. “I kept the pieces which I liked too much to sell,’ she admits. “Inevitably there were a few items which did not sell, and they have also ended up here.”

KITCHEN

The recently installed kitchen in limed oak replaced the old dining room

“The open fires, homely well proportioned rooms and charac terful beams, nooks and crannies, wh ich give the house a feeling of timelessness”

SITTING ROOM

The main sitting room is centred on a stone fireplace dating back to the 1600s. The coffee table and chaise longue are French finds

“Being partnered to an art agent is a huge plus,” says Annie pointing to a favourite primitive painting propped up on the shelves in the dining room. “Nicholas has a great eye and provided all the beautiful artwork throughout the house while I collected the furniture. We are a great team.” Recently the couple undertook their most adventurous project to date. They designed and have installed a new limed washed oak kitchen, which has revolutionised their lives. “We spend almost as much time in this room as in the sitting room; especially seated in the bay windows overlooking the garden. The kitchen is now my dream place to cook and eat,” says Annie singing the praises and extolling the skills of Antony Jee who built it. “Everything in the kitchen is stored in drawers, even the dishwasher is a huge drawer; two actually. They are so practical. No more bending down!” The top cupboards were deliberately omitted in favour of one huge shelf made from a cleaned up old scaffolding plank. Nicholas found the leather stools, which are so comfortable they are difficult to persuade guests to leave. Annie smiles. “We both love living here and especially as we have so much more room to entertain friends. Last Christmas fourteen sat down to Christmas lunch. We both love giving parties all the year round. In summer there is the garden and the pool. Even with no other neighbouring houses in sight, I never feel alone.” l Text and Styling: Narratives/Maggie Colvin Photography: Narratives/Robert Sanderson

HOMES

Is your bedroom crying out for a makeover? Take a little inspiration from the latest design trends, as Hanna Prince finds out

Amazing BEDROOMS

I

t’s the first thing you see when you wake up – so why is bedroom decor so often an after-thought when it comes to home design? This is the one area of the house where you can really give your creativity full reign. Bedroom furnishings needn’t be hardwearing, easy to clean or super functional. In other words, forget compromise and let your imagination take wing. Need a little inspiration? From cosy Nordic style to flamboyant expressionism, here’s our pick of the top up-andcoming bedroom trends for 2020. MIDCENTURY MODERN The obsession with simple, clean home designs from the 1950s and 60s shows no signs of abating. Vintage midcentury pieces are hard to come by, but there are some beautiful contemporary reproductions out there. Think minimalist wooden furniture and parquet floors paired with shaggy printed rugs and opulent bed linen.

30 SUSSEX LIVING | April 2020

Midcentury modern styles tend to display best against a white backdrop, but you could always mix modes and experiment with another top bedroom trend: 70s-style feature walls. 50 SHADES OF GREY Grey is the new white when it comes to bedroom design. Don’t be afraid to mix and match shades of grey, picking slightly different tints for curtains, bed linen, headboards and floors. It’s a trend that works well with the industrial

look – slim-legged metallic furniture, factory-style lighting and concrete walls or floors. Use pictures or even pot plants to add a final touch of colour. NORDIC RETREAT ‘Hygge’ might have had its day, but Nordic design remains in the spotlight. Cosiness is the key to this look, which is what makes it so perfect for bedrooms. Use textures instead of colours to add interest, draping soft furnishings with sheepskin rugs, woollen blankets, cotton throws and cushions. Opt for a warm, neutral palette, adding impact with a dark accent colour. Finally,

Introducing navy into your bedroom could be the key to getting more sleep

ramp up the cosiness with soft lighting and candles. ABSTRACT EXPRESSIONISM The antithesis of Nordic comfort, this style takes its cue from the abstract expressionist art movement of the 1940s. It’s all about geometrics and bold colours – if you want your bedroom to be fun and flamboyant rather than understated, this is the look for you. Go with punchy colour combinations (red and navy or yellow and mauve) and make a statement with geometric shapes on cushions, duvet covers, rugs and wallpaper.

JAPANDI Blend elegant Japanese design with the calm and clean Scandi mode and you get Japandi – the interior design trend that’s set to dominate home style this year. Clean lines, functionality and simplicity are key. When it comes to bedrooms, that means stripping out nick nacks and opting for hard floors, futon-style beds and zero clutter. Bringing nature indoors with pot plants, climbing greenery or bonsai trees will also help create a Japandi feel. Try organising your space according to the principles of kanso, the Japanese equivalent of feng shui, to complete the aesthetic.

way of experimenting with bold colours without any pressure. If a full wall of florals seems like too much, consider a nod to the botanical trend with printed cushions, blankets or bed linen. MOODY BLUES The 2020 Pantone Colour of the Year is Classic Blue – a clear sign that blue tones are enjoying a renaissance. Paired with white accents, navy works on bed throws, walls, cushions and bedside tables. Introducing navy into your bedroom could also be the key to getting more sleep. Researchers have named it the world’s most relaxing colour, making it perfect for bedrooms. Luxurious textiles, soft lighting and a clutter-free minimalist style can also help to create a peaceful, serene bedroom environment. l

PERFECT PRINTS Statement wallpaper and fabric prints are making a splash this season. Botanical wallpaper is set to be particularly popular – but it has to be bright and bold. Use it to create a feature wall or spruce up an en-suite bathroom. The aim is to bring nature indoors with tropical leaves, painted palms or zingy flower designs. Scared to commit? Stick-on wallpaper is a great

love your lawn! With spring finally on its way, Helen and the GreenThumb team at Lewes share some top tips on caring for your lawn this April.

Over the winter, your lawn may have gone into dormancy. Now, with the weather improving, it will need a spring feed to help stimulate it back to growth. Our slow release fertiliser contains the perfect blend of nutrients for healthy growth and a vibrant colour. On dry days you can again begin to mow your lawn. Make sure the blades are sharp and

ensure you do not scalp the grass as this will attract unwanted weeds and moss. Top tip - just clip the tops off. Once you have completed the first cut you can then start to trim the lawn back to the desired height, no lower than an inch and do not cut more than a quarter off the tops at a time. The best defence against weeds is a thick, healthy sward of grass and a regular feed and weed programme. If you have any mossy or dead patches, now is a Together, we will give your lawn the love and great time to repair them. Seed attention it deserves. must be in contact with the soil to germinate so rake out old organic matter and thatch first, then rough up the surface so it’s crumby, before scattering seed. Cover thinly with a lawn dressing and make sure the seed is kept moist until it germinates.

Unfortunately, this season we have seen an increase in leather jacket populations. The mild wet weather has been beneficial to their survival. If you discover any bare, thin, or yellowing patches ask our local Lawn Operative to help! We can then analyse and advise the best course of action. For further information about how GreenThumb can help you make your lawn lush and weed free, call your local branch on 01273 020720 or email us at lewes@

BLOOMING TIMES

Peas please! Easy to grow, versatile and super-healthy, freshly-harvested peas are the quintessential taste of summer, says Flo Whitaker

G

iven a bright, open spot and reasonable soil, peas are mostly undemanding plants. Seeds can be sown from March to June, approximately 5 cms deep and 8 cms apart. Adding leaf mould or well-rotted compost to the soil will help lock in moisture. Be sure to get supports in quickly as young plants produce climbing tendrils at an early stage. They also hate root disturbance – wind rock will make them miserable. Pea seedlings (both edible and ornamental flowering types) belie their delicate appearance and are surprisingly tough characters, but keep newspaper or horticultural fleece at hand to cover plants if frosty nights are forecast. Birds, especially pigeons, 34 SUSSEX LIVING | April 2020

adore pea foliage. Protective netting or reflective birdscare ribbon may be required to deter them. There are many varieties to choose from. Some are more resilient to cold and are faster to reach maturity. These are known as ‘earlies’ and will be labelled accordingly. If you select an ‘early’ and a ‘maincrop’ variety, you can extend the growing season. ‘Kelvedon Wonder’ is an old early variety that remains extremely popular. ‘Feltham First’, another early type, offers excellent

Some peas have gorgeous purple/ mauve pods which greatly adds to their ornamental value

resistance to cold weather, whereas ‘Onward’ and ‘Hurst Green Shaft’ are tried and tested main croppers. Different varieties grow at different heights. Carefully read the information on the packet; remember, tall plants will cast shade onto their neighbours. Lofty varieties may reach 2 metres, but in a height competition, the aptly-named ‘Victorian Colossal Climbing’ wins the prize. This heritage variety is still available and, providing you have space, a stepladder and a head for heights, is well worth growing as it produces heavy crops over a long season. In a good summer, Victorian Colossal can attain 4 metres – that’ll get the neighbours talking!

At the other end of the scale, bush-type varieties have modest height aspirations, require minimal staking and are good for patio pots. ‘Mange Tout’ peas are simply immature peas/pods, (the name roughly translates as “eat it all”). Theoretically, Mange Tout can be grown from any variety, but fastgrowing types usually make for tastier results; a young, succulent pod is preferable to a tougher one that’s taken longer to reach cropping size. Some peas have gorgeous purple/ mauve pods which greatly adds to their ornamental value, although the pigments are unstable when exposed to heat and usually disappear when cooked. Pea shoots/tips are scrumptious, nutritious and can be grown in seed trays in the greenhouse. An extensive root system is not required as the plants have a very short lifespan – like cress seeds growing on a damp paper towel. Cultivating pea shoots in a controlled, indoor environment also helps to keep the foliage clean. Use them raw in salads or add them to a stir fry, delicious! l

PETS

It’s a Dog’s Life Easter is fast approaching and Teddy has been sniffing around the animal kingdom. This month he educates us about bunnies, chicks, lambs, and bees, as barked with ease, through his human interface Helen Stockton

I

think ‘Her Indoors’ is a bit confused. At her age, these things can start to happen so it’s up to me to keep her on the straight and narrow as far as possible. I’m not entirely sure what to do about Easter though. I might be just a dog of limited understanding, but I know that there are certain animals, other than Border Terriers of course, who are automatically associated with this time of year. The Easter bunny is an obvious example. The history of this particular seasonal furry is debatable. Some say it comes from German folklore where the Easter hare, was supposed to decide whether children had been good or bad, which presumably influenced the quantity of Easter eggs delivered. Others suggest that rabbits have a long history as symbols of fertility, associated with the spring equinox and the coming of life. I don’t know what the truth is but I’m hoping the Easter bunny will overlook any minor misdemeanours that may have occurred, and head to the pet shop for a special doggy chocolate egg, as real chocolate is poisonous to us dogs. I can also confirm that rabbits are very fertile, breeding, well, like rabbits really, and that any making an appearance in our garden, are likely to be symbolic of a premature loss of life, rather than its arrival. I’m a terrier, what can I tell you. Another animal associated with Easter are chicks, presumably due to their connections with eggs, although which came first is a mystery to me… We don’t have chicks in our garden, but one of our neighbours used to keep

36 SUSSEX LIVING | April 2020

hens, and my predecessor, the late, great, Rolo, once escaped into their garden and chased their chickens. Although the timely intervention of an angry ‘Her Indoors’, prevented any serious outcomes in the chicken fatality department, let’s just say, feathers flew! Around Easter time, another of the prime animal contenders for the Easter top spot, lambs, put in an appearance in the fields around

Let’s just say, feathers flew! us. I am definitely not allowed to bark at those. As it’s ‘Junior Her’s birthday around this time, it is traditional for the females of the family to go lamb spotting so they can enjoy a bit of cuteness overload. I can’t see the attraction of it myself. If they want something small,

cute and furry, to make a fuss of, I’m more than willing to oblige, they don’t even have to ask. Which brings me back to my original point, about ‘Her Indoors’ confusion. We are acquiring some additions to the family this spring, but they are not rabbits, chickens or lambs. We are getting bees, a whole box full of them in fact. I’m not sure what the doggy protocols are for these, but I suspect steering clear will be in order. ‘Her Indoors’ has got a protective suit to wear when handling them, so I think I’ll leave her to it and sit inside, waiting nicely for the Easter bunny. I’m certainly not confused! l

ARLINGTON

BLUEBELL WALK The sight of bluebells herald spring and the life enhancing feeling that those warmer, longer days of summer are just around the corner, as Robert Veitch discovered when he visited John McCutchan at Arlington Bluebell Walk

helping fund over 75 different charities. When I met John, his team was repainting the Bluebell Barn and creating a new terraced picnic area in preparation for the new season, beginning on April 9th. His enthusiasm was beguiling for a man in his

eighties; he showed me the animal petting area, sun terrace, and themed toilets. “Each charity receives a guaranteed amount of income, but they have guidelines to follow so we can offer a consistent, high quality experience. Charities provide refreshments and man the

t was instigated by my wife, Carolyn,” revealed John McCutchan as he spoke warmly of her serendipitous idea of 1972. “We began as a spontaneous fundraiser for an open-air swimming pool at Park Mead Primary School in Upper Dicker.” The response to that initial spontaneity was overwhelming and so the gesture was repeated for a second year, third year, and now into a forty-eighth year. Since 1972, over £1,100,000 pounds has been raised,

‘meet and greet area’ as well as The Gatehouse.” Twentynine charities will benefit this year and there’s a waiting list of ten. John’s devotion to his wood was obvious as he showed me Beatons Wood, the area that sparked things off. It incorporates The Millennium Walk, Upper and Lower Ponds, and Memorial Glade. Beatons Wood undulates gently, offering enchanting vistas, captivating panoramas, and the chance to slow down to the speed of Mother Nature. Every four years an area is coppiced. Oaks in a recently coppiced area look majestic, stretching up to the heavens above. Early season sees white anemones predominate, then the first bluebells flower and intersperse. As anemones fade, bluebells become sovereign. The bluebells are English native Common Bluebells (Hyacinthoides nonscripta), a protected species. They’ve grown in these woods for generations, for centuries. Over time, seven coloured walks of varying lengths with different things to see have evolved. John recalled “They got their colours from the fertiliser bags we used to indicate each route in the early days.” The first decade saw 58,000 visitors. Last year alone 25,000 visited and the 14 mobility scooters were used 500 times. John’s father, Stanley, purchased Beatons Wood from the Michelham Priory Estate in 1925. It’s a 23-acre deciduous ancient woodland, consisting of oak, hornbeam, hazel and sweet chestnut. John paused when asked if he could imagine things as they are today, back in 1972. “No”, he chuckled, “back then I had a lot of Turkeys, all year round. I was born in the house I still live in. I hope to take my last breath in the room I took my first. I walk around the woods and just think how lucky I am.” John McCutchan is as impressive as the woods he maintains for all of us. l www.bluebellwalk.co.uk Open from: Thursday 9th April Sunday 17th May Opening Hours: 10am to 5pm

SECTION SUBJECT

Healthy Eating Our gut health is just as important to our wellbeing as the rest of our physical bodies. Here Lisa de Silva explores some healthy eating options

O

ur wellbeing series continues moving on to explore ways we can improve our physical wellbeing. This month we’ll consider how healthy eating habits can be beneficial in influencing how we feel. There is much truth in the saying ‘You Are What You Eat’ and growing evidence to suggest that what we eat can affect our mood. While there’s an ongoing debate about what we should or should not be eating for optimum health, it is clear that improving our diet can boost our energy levels and lift our spirits.

Try to eat a diet based on natural foods – unrefined carbohydrates, protein and good fats that release energy slowly MANAGING BLOOD SUGAR LEVELS Eating a diet that keeps our blood sugar balanced and at a steady level is the first step to improving our physical wellbeing. When our diet is overloaded with refined sugar, carbohydrates and processed foods (often full of hidden sugars) our bodies becomes less effective at converting this food into energy and will resort to storing it as fat. In this state, we can feel constantly tired, hungry and irritable. To rectify this and to keep blood sugar levels stable, try to eat a diet based on natural foods – unrefined carbohydrates, protein and good fats 42 SUSSEX LIVING | April 2020

that release energy slowly. The basis of a mood-boosting diet should include a good balance of the following food items: • fresh vegetables and fruit • unprocessed grains, cereals, basmati rice and high-fibre pasta • lean meat, fish, eggs, cheese • peas, beans, lentils, soya • nuts, seeds, avocado, yoghurt

MANAGING GOOD HYDRATION Dehydration can cause us to feel dizzy, tired, light-headed and irritable. Cheap and incredibly healthy, drinking water is the best way to avoid this and it is recommended that we all drink around 2-litres a day to keep us healthy, improve our bodily functions and increase our energy levels. Do be wary of caffeine; while it can provide quick bursts of energy, once the effect has worn off many are left feeling anxious and with disturbed sleep patterns. Combat this by not drinking caffeine after lunch, or switching to decaffeinated products. MANAGING GUT HEALTH Much has been written lately about the link between gut health and emotional wellbeing and there is growing evidence to suggest that your gut acts as a second brain – we often make decisions based on our ‘gut feel.’ These two brains talk to each other and it is believed that activity in our digestive system may affect our mental and emotional abilities. So, gut health in the form of good and balanced bacteria could also improve our physical wellbeing. To promote this, do incorporate as many fermented products in your diet as possible, including: • yoghurt, kefir • sauerkraut, kimchi, miso, tempeh • pickles • cheddar, mozzarella and cottage cheese • apple cider vinegar, kombucha l

ACTIVE RETIREMENT

Retirement is not the end, in fact it’s just the beginning! Ruth Lawrence looks at some of the exciting options awaiting you and your newfound freedom

TIME TO LIVE!

R

etirement is a misleading word; it suggests withdrawal or retreat yet for today’s new pensioners, a more accurate description might be ‘engaging with your freedom and dreams.’ Released from the shackles and responsibilities of work, people in their mid sixties are finding they finally have the chance to channel their energies in directions that never seemed possible in the preceding decades. This newfound freedom can allow them to explore facets of their personalities that have never been expressed and hidden talents can now emerge. Many people revel in limitless free time by travelling both in England and overseas; suddenly the world is your oyster so why not visit the places you’ve always dreamed of? This country is awash with varied scenery and interesting villages so why not hire a camper van and take to the road; head to Scotland and you’ll scarcely meet a soul all day out of season, quaint villages and stunning scenery await 44 SUSSEX LIVING | April 2020

you in Wales or how about the laid back life in Cornwall where you can hit the beach and enjoy the refreshing coastal walks. Try taking smaller roads for a more interesting journey than the motorway; the slow road is usually way more interesting.

Age doesn’t have to mean abandoning sport or even extreme sport

Why not write about your travels? Imagine how wonderful it would be for your descendents to follow your travels centuries into the future as we could have done had our ancestors had the technology we now possess. If you’ve always had a yearning to improve your photography, take a class, buy a decent camera and use it to record your travels or focus on a subject you have a passion for and explore it more deeply. There are numerous ways to share your images and gain inspiration from others of all ages. Age doesn’t have to mean abandoning sport or even extreme sport. There has been a centenarian who took a skydive from 10,000 feet and pensioners who have taken up parkour, usually assumed to be a teenage sport. The trick is to start slow and keep within your body’s present limitations while building confidence and flexibility. If there’s a skill you’ve always wanted to try, now is the perfect time; not only will learning a new discipline stimulate your mind, it will also expand

your social life. How about learning to draw or make prints? People who always assumed they ‘can’t’ draw walk away from a class delighted at their own ability and armed with another hobby to practice at home or away. Each person has their own unique style and having lived for several decades has already given you a wealth of experience to fall back on. These experiences can be translated via art or craft and results in rewarding work that you will never have considered possible. Try throwing pots, doing calligraphy, making a small boat or musical instrument or crafting a stained glass

Try throwing pots, doing calligraphy, making a small boat or musical instrument

window. If they sound too ambitious, join a class with other older beginners and soon you’ll be creating with growing confidence and be amazed at your results. If your only experience of music was scratching away at the violin aged four or abandoning your school recorder, you can now access first class tuition in any instrument of your choice. Start with a keyboard and in a year you could be playing a piano with confidence, pick up a cello and you could be hooked by the potential you know is waiting in the instrument. Ever yearned to play

in a band? There are numerous opportunities to learn folk music and jam together or even take up guitar or drums and form a band with friends. Education centres across Sussex and beyond offer a plethora of courses for adult education and of course there are clubs and groups available in every town and village. If you do fancy something more formal with regular hours why not think about volunteering? From your local school to historical houses you could discover a new lease of life in a totally different environment and really feel that you are giving something back at the same time. Retirement is a time of enjoyment, whatever form that takes. Now is the time to live, discover and enjoy life. l

RECIPE

Easter isn’t Easter without some freshly baked hot cross buns, slathered with butter and enjoyed while still warm. Sara Whatley highly recommends having a go at these, they are not as hard as you might think!

Makes 12

Easter

Hot Cross Buns

INGREDIENTS 500g/1lb 2oz strong white flour, plus extra for dusting 75g/2¾oz caster sugar 2 tsp mixed spice 1 tsp ground cinnamon 1 lemon, finely grated zest only Grating of fresh nutmeg 10g/¼oz salt 10g/¼oz fast-action dried yeast 40g/1½oz butter 300ml/10fl oz milk 1 free range egg, beaten 200g/7oz sultanas or raisins 50g/1¾oz finely chopped mixed candied peel For the topping 75g/2¾oz plain flour 2 tbsp honey, for glazing

and yeast, placing them on opposite sides of the bowl. Melt the butter in a pan and warm the milk in a separate pan. Add the butter and half the tepid milk to the dry ingredients. Add the egg and bring the mixture together, incorporating the flour from the edges of the bowl as you go. Gradually add the remaining milk to form a soft pliable dough (you may not need it all). Tip the dough out on to a lightly floured work surface. Lightly knead for 10 minutes until silky and elastic and forming a smooth ball. Flour a bowl, place the dough in and cover with a damp tea towel. Leave to rest in a warm place for at least an hour or until doubled in size. Turn the dough out on to a floured surface. Knock the air out by bashing it with your fist, then sprinkle over the dried fruit and mixed peel and

knead into the dough for 1 to 2 minutes. Divide into 12 balls. Line 1-2 baking trays with paper and place the balls on the tray, placing them fairly close together and flattening them slightly. Cover with the damp tea towel. Leave for 30-40 minutes or until the buns have doubled in size. Preheat the oven to 220C/200C Fan/Gas 7. For the topping, add the flour to a bowl with 100ml/3½fl oz water. Mix together to make a thick paste and spoon into an icing bag. When the buns have risen pipe a cross on each one. Bake for 1520 minutes until pale golden-brown, turning the baking trays round halfway through if necessary. Brush the buns with a little honey to give a nice shine, before setting aside to cool on a wire rack.

Unsolicited telephone calls are a two-fold nuisance. They’re often illegal and usually occur at highly inconvenient moments; when you’re painting a ceiling or dealing with something unpleasant the cat’s brought in. Some marketing calls are perfectly legitimate, so I try to be polite in my responses. Everyone’s got to make a living and charmless call centres are full of stressed-out individuals working on commission – what an awful job it must be. However, the other day I received a fraudulent call from a person so inept, it was irritating and laughable in equal measure. He had a long list of topics and was intent on finding the right line to hook me with. Sadly, for him, this old trout didn’t take the bait. His opening gambit was to inform me that my online bank account had been hacked. “I don’t do online banking,” was my honest reply, so he referred to my recent car accident. “I don’t drive and have never owned a car,” I replied – again in complete honesty, so he swiftly selected another topic, informing me there was a payment error regarding a booking with a well-known airline. “I haven’t flown for 30 years,” I truthfully said. Sensing defeat, he made a final cast of the net, telling me that my TV licence had expired. When I genuinely stated that I’ve never owned a telly, he decided he was either speaking to a lunatic or a time traveller from the 19th century, muttered an expletive, then hung up. I almost felt sorry for him. Almost.

MONEY MATTERS

NEW PARTNER, OLD HAND with Swindells, how her role and the industry has changed and where she sees the accounting industry moving in the future.

Swindells Chartered Accountants are appointing Sally Webber as a new partner at their firm, but it’s no ordinary story how she got there. Stuart Mack tells us more

When did you join Swindells? I joined Swindells at the age of 18 after completing my A levels at Heathfield Community College. I spent two years as a trainee studying for my AAT, followed by further studying to become a Chartered Accountant [Sally actually achieved the top mark in the world for her first exam at the time with a score of 96%] and most recently qualifying as a Chartered Tax Advisor last year. How has Swindells helped you progress in your career? As a training firm Swindells has been excellent. The firm is committed to developing staff internally, they have funded my training, provided study leave and people are always around if you need to check something. Having a strong partnership team including a mentor and role model in Melanie at the firm has been a real influence on my career. What are the biggest challenges you’ve faced? During my time at Swindells, the business has been through some monumental challenges and changes. From having a fire burn down our offices in the middle of the night to tough economic times… we’ve all gone through a lot. I think it’s a testament to the team that’s been built here that we’re still going strong.

“T

he partners are very excited to Having a mentor announce that we and role model in are appointing Melanie has been a new partner here at Swindells as from 1 April. Sally Webber joined us a real influence straight after leaving college 11 years on my career ago; she first qualified as a Chartered Accountant and more recently a Chartered Tax Advisor. We are looking forward to Sally joining the partnership team and helping us continue to grow the business,” says Melanie Richardson, Managing Partner. I sat down with Sally to talk about her eleven-year journey

What do you think are the biggest challenges for the industry in the future? Adapting to and adopting technology; there have been huge changes to the way every industry in the world operates and ours is no different. Cloud accounting, Making Tax Digital, even remote working; but the real challenge here is not to lose the human side to our business. The cookie cutter approach rarely works for anyone in our industry. We pride ourselves on our client service. What do you think has helped you progress so quickly and successfully? Being headstrong, having a goal and not being afraid to go after it. I’d also like to take this opportunity to thank the partners and the wider team at Swindells for the training, support and guidance I’ve received throughout my career. I’ve been here over a decade and in that time, I’ve worked with an amazingly talented and committed group of colleagues. I’m looking forward to the new challenges ahead and to working with the partners to grow the business. 52 SUSSEX LIVING | April 2020
