Love food and drink? Love local! Sara Whatley notes some of the great produce that our beautiful country provides and celebrates buying local for our foodie month feature Few things taste better than locally produced food. It’s part of the magic when away on holiday, and can bring a new dimension to everyday life at home. Expand your menu when you buy local seasonal food with ingredients you wouldn’t normally choose. We all get stuck in our shopping ruts so it’s nice to be challenged with a new flavour in the kitchen. Buying local is also good for the planet as well as your taste buds, cutting down the carbon footprint and supporting the local rural economy.

Cycle or walk to your local shops for an even lower carbon impact, and remember to be prepared with a reusable bag at all times. We are absolutely blessed in southern England with a cornucopia of fruit, vegetables, meat, fish, cheese, bread, chocolate – as well as a wide variety of drinks, both alcoholic and non-alcoholic, to wash everything down. The south has become something of a drinks haven with a large variety of vineyards, distilleries and breweries popping up all over, many winning awards and gaining popularity globally. It’s a great day out to visit one of these establishments, take a tour and enjoy a sampling session. Enjoy!

Generation Distillers

Bolney Wine Estate

Generation 11 Sussex Dry Gin is juniper forward, smooth with zingy citrus, warm spice and elegant floral notes. 11 generations ago, our ancestors William of Orange & Queen Mary inadvertently started a gin revolution in England. Today, celebrating the resurgence of gin, we are creating beautiful spirits in our distillery near Lewes in Sussex. In our gins we use local botanicals and pure Sussex water from our own well. For more on our brand, our range and stockists please visit us at: @generationdistillers

It’s hard to beat Bolney Wine Estate for a great day out. It’s a great place for a spot of lunch with guests or with the family (and they include the dog in that). Enjoy locally sourced food on the stunning viewing balcony overlooking the ripening vines while their chef serves up scrumptious dishes for breakfast and lunch. On Friday evenings, visit their wine bar and watch the sun go down with a glass of wine, plus a variety of beers, spirits and a selection of small dishes.
