All About Ani – page 2

Ana Anderson, that’s me! I’m a seventh grader at Kenmore Junior High and this is where you come to learn about me. This is all about what I eat and what I do to stay healthy. Do you like your vegetables? Do you work out – at what intensity level? Do you get enough sleep? Read on to find out if I do! Veggies are not my favorite food, but I know that I still have to eat them. I need them to keep me healthy and strong, fruits are good too, but I don’t over eat fruits – they are still sugar after all. I don’t like the taste of vegetables because they taste like grass. The texture of the vegetables I have to say is way worse than the taste. The texture is soft and squishy that makes it feel like mashed potatoes when you chew. Although, I just got my braces off, so I can start having crunchier veggies now. I like vegetables raw; like carrots, celery, and broccoli. I fit them into meals like lunch and dinner, but not breakfast. Fruit helps to balance the scale so you don’t have too much vegetable taste. For exercise I love to play soccer, tennis, and dance. I like those because they involve the movement of the legs. I say that because I also love to run. Running is good for your legs and heart. Taking my dogs on walks is great too because that is a good way for me to get fresh air and vitamin D from the sun. Plus, it helps my puppies stay healthy too! Usually, I will take them for 10-15 minute walk because one is a puppy only three months old and can’t go that far, but I run half of it. Running is good for me not just because it helps my heart, but because it helps me grow. I have grown a lot since 6th grade; I was around 4’ 11,’’ but now I am 5’ 6’’. I am one inch shorter than my grandpa, two inches shorter than my sister and three inches shorter than my mom. Right now is the height that I think I am going stay around, but I hope that I get somewhere between 5’ 8’’ and 6’ 0’’ not just 5’ 6’’. My great grandmother was 6’ and my mom is 5’9’’ so I am hopeful. I think if I keep drinking water and stay active I will keep a healthy lifestyle – and learn to like veggies more. Also in ten years I see myself as an orthodontist. I used to have braces on to straighten my teeth. Now my smile is big and straight and makes me happy. I want to share that with others. Now I am hoping that when I get older I can go to countries in Africa to help out and do some charity work helping children with teeth problems. My family’s history is one that puts me at some risk with my health. My great-grandmother on my mom’s side died from diabetes and my GaGa (my dad’s mom) has diabetes now. My Granny (my mom’s mom) has heart problems. One of the biggest issues though is the life style. It seems like both sides sit a lot and don’t do many activities. I think they worked so hard that when they finished they just were tired and sat around. They also don’t drink much water, but they all are good about eating vegetables – even the real bad tasting ones like brussel sprouts and lima beans! I try really hard to drink lots of water. I know it is unhealthy to eat a ton of candy, but I also know that it is not good to try to give up everything so I just have a little. If I have just a little of the things I know aren’t good nutritionally and more of the ones that are good nutrition then that will help me to stay fit and not make the same health choices that my family has made.

When I look at my food log I am pretty happy. I know I need more veggies, but I don’t eat much junk food and I really don’t like to eat out. I would rather stay home and make something. Foods that are deep fried make my tummy hurt. I do like salty stuff like popcorn and chips, but I try not to eat too much of them.

DIFFERENT HEART RATES AND WHAT THEY DO… What is a heart rate? – A heart rate is a count of how many times your heart beats per minute. What is a resting heart rate? - A resting heart rate is the number of times your heart beats per minute when you are completely at rest or you just woke and haven’t done anything and are just laying there. My resting heart rate is 64. What is a target heart rate zone?- a target heart rate zone is a heart rate goal for exercise and is often 60- 85 percent which is for the healthy heart rate for prior exercise testing. My target heart rate is between 125- and 166 beats per minute. Why is cardiovascular fitness so important? – Cardiovascular fitness is important because it helps strengthen the cardiovascular system which is made up of the blood vessels and heart and it improves your circulation.

My intensity levels are pretty low and when I look at my activities I think they look pretty lame! I haven’t been going outside much because I don’t like to be cold – unless there is snow! I can clearly see that I am not getting enough exercise. I think I can improve what I do – especially since it will be getting warmer. As it warms up I will take my dogs to the park and chase them around and go for longer walks with them. I could also start dancing inside instead of sitting on the computer or watching television all the time.

8 Hours and 30 Minutes 8 Hours and 30 Minutes 8 Hours slept

What happens if you don’t get enough sleep? If we do not get enough our minds and bodies will not and cannot properly function. Most people miss about one hour of sleep needed, but don’t feel it right away, after a long time though it adds up so every hour is important. If I don’t get enough sleep, to quote my mom, I am “little miss cranky pants”. Plus, it is hard to focus on anything for more than a few minutes. My thoughts about sleep as it relates to my normal daily routine are that I feel like I could go to bed a little earlier because when I go up to wash my face and brush my teeth I spend time talking to my sister, playing with my dog, reading or drawing, which keeps me up. Also on weekends sometimes I will stay up till about two-o- clock in the morning and I will take a nap in the afternoon. If I take a nap in the afternoon it is only about 20 minutes long because, I learned that if you take a nap longer than twenty minutes you’ll want sleep all day, but if you sleep less than that you won’t get the energy you need so, that is why 20 minute naps are called “POWER NAP” and one of my favorite things to do on the weekend. Doing this project has shown me that I actually eat pretty well, but could use more vegetables. I also need a lot more activity, something without a screen in front of my face.  My sleep is good and I need to make sure I keep getting enough. I drink lots of water and green tea when it is iced.
