The UAB Residence Hall provides housing for more than 700 students. The promenade project, also by Goodwyn, Mills and Cawood, provides additional campus green in the surrounding urban environment, and the courtyard provides a more intimate recreational area for the residents.

The double-height lobby is located at the base of the glass core and provides a grand entry. The stair allows circulation between the differing exterior grades, and larger adjacent stairs furnish seating for meeting, studying, or socializing. The reception desk is positioned to provide a vantage point of both the promenade and the courtyard entry doors for security.

The exterior appearance complements the adjacent fabric, including the standard brick look used to distinguish campus buildings from the surrounding downtown structures, while introducing a lighter feeling due to ample glass and a light-colored precast base.

Village Creek is one of seven corridors that comprise a county-wide trail system across Jefferson County, Alabama. The Freshwater Land Trust commissioned our team to provide conceptual graphics for the Village Creek Greenway in order to gain political and financial support. The creek stretches 44 miles, primarily through low-income residential neighborhoods, and will provide fitness and recreational opportunities for the residents to enjoy.

Village Creek is prone to flooding, and many of the homes adjacent to the creek are built in the floodplain. Sports fields and other terraced areas at low elevations mitigate flooding while providing low-cost recreational facilities.

The graphics also offer ways to address wildlife preservation. The creek is the only habitat in the world for an endangered fish called the Watercress Darter, and Great Blue Herons also live here. Large graphics raise awareness for the life that Village Creek supports while providing an identity for the Greenway.

Large, north-facing glass allows natural light to enter the space, and a deep overhang provides shading as well as a porch feel for the outdoor dining area. The barrel roof mimics other, more utilitarian athletic department buildings in the vicinity.
