“False Start was the result of certain limitations in my work, and I had the need to overcome those, to break with certain habits I had formed, certain procedures I had used. The flags and targets have colors positioned in a predetermined way. I wanted to find a way to apply color so that the color would be determined by some other method. Jasper Johns

“I’ve found when you get old you must return to certain things in the beginning, or things you have a sentiment for or something. You tend to be nostalgic. And I think about my boats. When I grew up, in summer with my parents we were always in Massachusetts, and I was always by the sea and now I live by the sea.” Cy Twombly

“Even today, nearly twenty years later, the images in the Colored Paper Images have a fresh, raw strength that belie the passage of time. They still have an abrupt, singular quality that questions anew with each viewing. They provide a pivot from which to look back at the prints that preceded them and to review the prints that followed. David Kiehl Former Curator of Prints Whitney Museum of American Art

“During the late 1980s Marden became interested in calligraphy. Based on poems of a celebrated Chinese poet named “Cold Mountain,” it is made up of tangled webs and vertical gestures suggesting poetic couplets. The etching process for this print— sugarlift—allows for flowing gesture, which Marden created by dipping a stick in a sugar solution and drawing with it on a prepared etching plate.” Deborah Wye Chief Curator Emerita, Department of Prints and Illustrated Books Museum of Modern Art
