Hello! I’m Dr. Porkovich. I created The Integration Workshop course to assist international students entering the British independent school system for the first time.

The course is designed to teach students to anticipate then solve common problems so that the ‘shock factor’ is diminished. It also provides behavioral strategies that permit a smooth transition into a new social environment.

The following slides are a small sample of a 2-day custom integration course with tools and exercises that could be created for your school.

OK. LET’S GET STARTED

BRIDGING THE INTEGRATION GAP

So why are we here? Well, the main reason we’re here is to help you understand the British independent school environment so that you are happy, productive, and successful in your new adventure.

GETTING STARTED So now we have a good idea of what you hope to achieve through your British independent school experience, why you are attending the Workshop, and what we’ll be doing over the next two days. Now it’s time to get started on your foundation knowledge and skills.

The Basics Before you can bridge the Integration Gap, you need to ‘get the basics’ by understanding: ü The purpose of school, study & learning. ü The British education system. ü Individual student motivation & goals.

Key Concept 1: Bridging the Integration Gap Questions we will be answering; ü Why is there an Integration Gap? ü How do we experience it?

These questions will be answered during the Workshop. Don’t forget, Bridging the Integration Gap is your first Key Concept.

ü What is the impact of the Gap? ü What are the causes? ü What will we do to bridge this Gap?

Key ConceptS Bridging the Integration Gap is our first Key Concept (KC). Look out for these KC’s during the course; from now on, whenever you see this symbol …. then that’s a KC.

Key Concept 1: Bridging the Integration Gap

BRIDGING THE INTEGRATION GAP

Pre-entry: Student is under-informed & apprehensive.

You will see from the diagram that a journey to full integration takes place from Phase I to Phase II.

Post-entry: Student is confident, committed & fully integrated.

Foundation to Integration In the Workshop, you will begin this journey on Day 1 – Phase 1, when you develop the foundation. You then progress to Day 2 - Phase II, where you will learn how to use this foundation to become fully integrated into your new school.

What to Expect From Your School British independent schools expect students to be independent learners and selfstarters. This means the school wants you to motivate yourself to do what you have to in order to succeed.

Finding Information As a student, you have a right to information and you’ll get it by following the three unwritten ‘rules.’ These are: 1.

Be prepared before you seek information so that you know exactly what you need – and that you are in the right place to get it.

2.

Ask politely and say ‘thank you.’

3.

Always smile.

COMMUNICATING EFFECTIVELY So now you have a good idea of the techniques you can use to get what you need. But we all know that these methods won’t work without fruitful interaction and effective communication.

It’s the basis of full integration.

YOU SHOULD KNOW Right now, you should know that while academic results are very important, your school also wants you to develop positive personal values and qualities, and to help you grow as a whole person.

Phase 3: Out of the Woods I was feeling kind of down so I used the resources my school has available. After talking to my Tutor, Housemaster/Housemistress, and my Guardian, I feel a LOT better. I realize now that maybe I was very excited when I first arrived and then I had a letdown when the reality of study hit.

Phase 3: Out of the Woods But now I have settled into a routine and I’m working hard – and using the tools from my Workshop Toolkit. Now I know what’s required, I’m going to be tough. I’ll get there. I’m out of the woods and ready to do even better!

SAMPLE SLIDES:

POST-Entry integration

The Global View Going to a British independent school involves a whole group of people. If you want to be successful, you will have to take the viewpoints of all these people into consideration. Although this is sometimes difficult, it is one of the basic skills you must master if you want to be fully integrated into your new school; which is, after all, why we are here.

ENTERING THE SYSTEM Let’s move on now to discuss sociocultural factors in more detail.

Entering the System No-one will tell you that entering the British Independent School System is easy for an international student.

It isn’t. But after all, aren’t we in the Workshop to learn some strategies for making the process easier?

36

Pre-Departure Integration Workshop Proposal

Why is it so difficult? As I said, everyone agrees that entering the British independent school system is difficult for international students. So it’s only logical to ask: Why?

Why is it so difficult? I believe there are four reasons for this difficulty in adapting: 1.

Leaving home is daunting.

2.

The experience is tough and demanding.

3.

‘The Background Assumption’; international students do not have the same background as British students

4.

Differences.

Let’s take a look at each of these reasons.

38

Pre-Departure Integration Workshop Proposal

Leaving Home Is Daunting… Just think about the first reason I gave you a couple of slides ago … You are being asked to leave your home and travel to a country that may be very unfamiliar to you; with different customs and ways of behaving, and where everyone speaks a language that is not your own. Then you’re asked to do well in this environment. Talk about daunting! 39

THIS SOMETIMES MAKES STUDENTS FEEL OVERWHELMED BY THE DEMANDS OF THEIR NEW LIFE.

40

Pre-Departure Integration Workshop Proposal

So how do we deal with these challenges? We’ll be talking about this in a more detailed way tomorrow, but here are two general things: 1.

41

First impressions are the most important. It’s very hard to change a negative first impression so make sure the first one you give is POSITIVE!

So how do we deal with these challenges? 2.

42

You must be willing to ‘go the extra mile,’ to investigate and leverage school input once you enter school. This will put you in a better position to take full advantage of the unique opportunity you have been offered.

Differences Finally, we come to the topic of differences. No doubt about it, people, cultures, and societies are different – and that’s the great thing about the world.

The ‘Trigger Method’ Hi!

©

The ‘Trigger Method’ © – a wonderful tool that will help you in many situations. We’ll see how this method works in our next exercise concerning comportment, behavior, and etiquette; and talk about it again later in the Workshop.

44

YOU SHOULD KNOW I’m quite sure, however, that by the end of the Workshop you’ll have all the knowledge, skills, and tools to succeed in the system. Just like British students!

Summary WHAT DID WE LEARN TODAY? We learned that: ü The Workshop will help you bridge the ‘Integration Gap.’ ü In this way, you will be transformed from under-informed, apprehensive individuals to confident, committed, and fully integrated members of the school community who are equipped to flourish academically and personally.

Today’s Takeaway ü You will have a lot of support, but it’s all up to you. ü The more you put in, the more you’ll get back. ü Most importantly, your new-found stability will permit you to resolve problems before they become major obstacles – or know how to seek help to do so. ü Again, you’ll have the tools so it’s all up to you. 47
