GYC Wins Sailing Awards Second week of January, Gulfport Yacht Club hosted the annual Gulf Yachting Association (GYA) winter meeting. For those who don’t know, the GYA winter meeting is where all the clubs within our area get together and plan sailing regattas and various other activities for the entire year. This includes both one design and offshore sailing events. During this time the GYA also conducts its annual sailing awards banquet where sailors and clubs are recognized for their achievements throughout the year. I’m proud to announce that GYC won three awards this year which includes 1st place in the Mississippi Capdevielle Challenger Series (Flying Scot); recognized for participating in all 16 Capdevielle Regattas for the 3rd year in a row, and lastly GYC won the prestigious Race Management award for running a great regatta during Challenge Cup last summer. Special thanks and congratulations go to Sam Vasquez and John Morrow (PRO of Challenge Cup), entire race committee, sailors and GYC staff for a job well done! ~Sam Hopkins

New Year’s Fun with the Commodore

Commodore’s Report January was a busy month at the club and it’s only going to get busier in the coming months! The GYA Winter Meeting, held at the club on January 9-10, was a great success, with approximately 100 persons registered from throughout the GYA. At the Awards Banquet, the GYC received the GYA Race Management Award for its work at the Challenge Cup. Congratulations to John Morrow, Michael Hage and all the others who were involved in this effort. Also, the club was recognized for being one of the five clubs, out of the 32 GYA clubs, who fielded a team for all 16 Capdevielle events. Great job. We did have some damage from the recent record low temperatures during early to mid-January. Some pipe coming into the club and on the docks and piers, along with a number of plants, were damaged and had to be replaced. Speaking of docks and piers, there are 18 slips available of various sizes. If interested, please call Gary Robinson, docks and piers chairman. This month kicks off the Taste of the Town series of dinners, which you can find out more about in the Log Sheet. This will be a great opportunity for our members to experience cuisine from other restaurants here on the Coast, served by our staff in a comfortable setting. If you’ve missed the last two Saints football parties, you have an opportunity to make up for it by coming to the Super Bowl Sunday Spectacular. (That feels good, saying Saints and Super Bowl in the same sentence!). The entertainment committee, junior activities committee, and the staff have a “Super” party planned that you don’t want to miss. It will be followed a week later by Mardi Gras Madness and Valentine’s Day Brunch. I told you it’s going to get busier! See you at the club, Marty Warren, Commodore

Thursday Taste of the Town! Beginning Thursday February 4, every Thursday evening we will feature meals from some of Gulfport’s finest restaurants. The first Taste of the Town will feature a gourmet meal prepared for you by Salute! The deliciousness starts at 6pm.

Auxiliary Happenings… Officers for 2010 met on January 19th to plan what promises to be an exciting year for GYC Ladies Auxiliary! Notices are mailed quarterly about upcoming meetings. You should have received a notice for the January, February and March meetings. If you did not, please let me know. The new officers were installed and they are: Jana Jarrell, President; Candace Ozerden, Vice President; Joyce Smith, Secretary; and Liz Flatt, Treasurer. Jana Jarrell thanked outgoing president, Judy Karl for a very productive year. Hostesses for January were Margaret Blount, Willidora Kremer, Mary Ann Nicholson and Maybelle Dukes who provided a very festive Mardi Gras theme for the tables. February hostesses will be Rosemond Boardman, Stephanie Bass and Margaret Cannon. The honored guest for the January meeting was our new commodore, Marty Warren who gave us encouraging remarks about the year ahead. Events are planned for our Yacht Club that promises a fun-filled year with Marty at the helm. Bridge winners this month were Dean Hunter, first place and Lil Jobe and Rosamond Boardman tied for second. Congratulations! The program for February will be on the 24th with Walt Rode from the Broadus Association and David D’Aquilla from the City of Gulfport who will report on the development within the Small Craft Harbor. You will not want to miss this very informative meeting. If you have not signed up to be a hostess for next year, please volunteer at the February meeting. There is a budget provided for decorations. Our Directory will be published hopefully sometime in February so if you name is not in the directory or if you would like to add your email address or change a phone number please contact Liz Flatt at eflatt@cableone.net or 228-324-8248. Joyce Smith (228-861-3397or 228-222-3146) or jsmith77@cableone.net makes the reservations for the Wednesday Luncheon on the Monday before so please let her know by then so that she can provide an accurate number for the lunch menu.
