Children, Youth, and Families Girls and Young Women Borough of Manhattan Community College, for a program, now operating at other City colleges, that helps students graduate through tutoring and career, financial aid, and advisory services. NYC Housing Authority, to expand a literacy program for 4th- to 6th-grade girls in 11 Brooklyn public housing projects that includes field trips to literary events and readings by female and minority writers.

Hunger and Homelessness City Harvest, to make affordable fresh produce more available in Melrose and Mt. Hope in the Bronx, Stapleton on Staten Island, Bed-Stuy in Brooklyn, and Washington Heights.

Phipps Community Development Corporation, to hire a bilingual financial counselor to advise homeless families in seven shelters in the South and central Bronx.

Social Services and Welfare MFY Legal Services, for the Kinship Caregiver Law Project, which helps grandparents caring for their abandoned grandchildren get legal help to keep the children fed, healthy, and educated. Nontraditional Employment for Women, for apprenticeship programs in construction and green jobs.

League Treatment Center, to help autistic children with speech and behavioral problems.

Outreach Project, to strengthen discharge planning in two outpatient programs for addicted Brooklyn and Queens youth. Staten Island Mental Health Society, for lifecoaching, crisis, and in-home counseling for addicted youth, and for rehabilitated youth to counsel groups of 10- to 14-year-olds on avoiding drugs.

Youth Development Fund for the City of New York, Center for Court Innovation, to strengthen educational services in Queens for juvenile delinquents with mental health problems. Public Allies, to provide paid apprenticeships to highly motivated, but cash poor, young adults who want to work for nonprofits.
