People often have a financial plan for retirement but how about a health plan? Adopting a plan for healthier habits can make a huge difference in aging well. Here are seven tips from experts.

6 DEVON Calendar

Buy great sneakers designed for comfortable walking. Leave them in a prominent place where you see them often. Start by walking around the block. Expand that to 30-minute walks three times weekly.

Practice your balance. Stand on one leg with your eyes closed for a few seconds. This is a good exercise to do while brushing your teeth. Fix breakfast. Stop eating donuts, bagels or other breakfast foods with low nutritional value. Try fruit, almond milk or plain yogurt. Cut out excess sugar in all your meals, especially soft drinks. Attend the Breakfast and Learn program at Surrey Havertown beginning on March 19. Reduce stress wisely. Rather than unwind with a glass of wine or cocktail, try meditation or yoga breathing. Practice resistance training. To keep your muscle mass from disappearing, lift hand weights or use weight machines.

Work on a project. Choose a project that has meaning to you. Learn to paint, write a story or try something you’ve always dreamed about. Embrace self-improvement. Take a class, try a program or attend a lecture series. Self-improvement isn’t just physical, it’s mental too. Being a member at Surrey can help you age well. Exercise classes, health screenings, interesting programs and nutritional lunches are all available for Surrey members. Check out the calendar pages and make up your health plan today. Winter Weather Closing Bob’s Blog NEW WEEKEND PROGRAM HAS BENEFITS FOR EVERYONE When I first began working at Surrey, I did not fully understand the incredible commitment of family caregivers. These people dedicate their lives to caring for a spouse, a parent or other family member. Very often, they need to manage health insurance, medical care and finances while juggling personal care for their loved one. In many cases they are on call 24/7. They receive no breaks.

In the event of inclement weather, all Surrey sites will follow local school closing policies. If your School District is closed, Surrey activities will be cancelled, and the site closed. If the school districts announce a delay, all Surrey centers will open at 9:30. If you are not sure, please call your Surrey location before venturing out. Which is why Surrey Home Care developed Weekend Respite Care. This new, fee-based program is available on Saturdays and Sundays, two weekends per month. The program provides a 5 hour day of personalized activities, gentle exercise, lunch and snacks in a safe, caring environment. The wonderful part of this program is that it benefits not only the older adult but also gives the family caregiver some time to relax, see friends or run errands. Family caregivers have been delighted to hear about all the new things that clients tried and liked (chair yoga is one example) during the day. It is truly a benefit to all involved. If you know someone who is caring for a loved one and could use support, please tell them about this valuable program or have them call 610-647-9840.

Take the Stress Out of Driving to Your Procedure If you are having a same day procedure that requires anesthesia, such as a colonoscopy, cataract surgery or endoscopy, transportation to and from the medical facility can be a difficult problem. Usually, you must arrive early in the morning. Then, due to the anesthesia, you cannot drive yourself home. A taxi or Uber service is not an option because you must be accompanied by someone who will ensure that you are safely in your home. Surrey’s professional staff can help. Clients who use our Medical Procedure Transportation Service will be accompanied round trip from arrival through the discharge process and travel home. If necessary, this service can include prescription pick up, light meal preparation and same day post procedure care. Surrey takes the stress out of getting to and from these procedures. Find out more about this excellent, fee-based service at 610-647-9840.

Surrey Launches Weekend Respite Care Program Surrey’s Weekend Respite Care Program gives caregivers time away to reduce stress and refresh energy. For participants, it provides a program of activities, music, gentle exercise, hobbies and meals to help them stay socially connected and engaged.

APPRISE Counseling

HOW THE PROGRAM WORKS

New to Medicare? Have questions about your medical insurance? Having a problem with a bill?

The first step to enroll is a free assessment conducted by a Surrey staff member. This is necessary even if the individual has received services from Surrey in the past. Call Surrey Home Care at 610-647-9840 to schedule.

TRAINED APPRISE VOLUNTEERS CAN HELP.

The assessment is a critical component for optimal care. During this process our staff will collect all necessary medical and contact information. More importantly, this is also when we discuss the client’s interests, hobbies, preferences and more. Individual’s needs will be incorporated in a personalized care plan to ensure they are engaged and comfortable. Participants will have a choice of activities to participate in each day. Snacks and meals are included as part of the daily schedule.

SCHEDULING THE WEEKEND The Weekend Respite Care program will be offered for a daily fee two weekends per month, from 10 am to 3 pm during the launch period of January – June 2019. Clients will be able to schedule the days they would like to participate during the assessment meeting. Transportation may be available for an additional cost. “I had not left my husband alone outside our home in five years. He had a great time at Surrey and even tried chair yoga.”

Save Money with These Sites From clothing to groceries, many retailers offer discounts to seniors. Very often discounts are available only on certain days of the month and are not always actively promoted. Usually senior discounts provide savings somewhere between 5% and 20%.

Another way to save is to visit websites that offer money saving coupons and offers. You can sign up using your email account and you will receive discount notifications and coupons. You can also price shop using some of the sites. This is especially useful when shopping for larger items such as appliances and autos.

Essential Oils: A New Trend That Might Have Benefits Essential oils are a new trend that has become so popular, even grocery stores carry them. They are compounds extracted from plants by distillation or cold pressing. The oils capture the plant’s scent and flavor, also called its essence.

Time to Think About Taxes Tax season is right around the corner!

HOW DO ESSENTIAL OILS WORK? Essential oils are most commonly used for aromatherapy. They are either inhaled, using a diffuser, or diluted with oil and rubbed on the skin. Inhaling the aromas from essential oils can stimulate areas of the limbic system, which is a part of your brain that plays a role in emotions, behaviors, sense of smell and long-term memory. This reaction is one of the reasons why familiar smells can trigger memories or emotions. The limbic system also plays a role in controlling some unconscious physiological functions, such as breathing, heart rate and blood pressure. Some people claim that essential oils can exert a physical effect on your body in this way.

HERE’S A LIST OF 10 POPULAR ESSENTIAL OILS AND THE HEALTH CLAIMS ASSOCIATED WITH THEM: Peppermint: Used to boost energy and focus. Lavender: Used for stress relief and induce sleep. Sandalwood: Used to calm nerves.

Sign up for a 1 ½ hour appointment with a trained, IRS certified volunteer who will help you complete your state and federal tax returns. Please call Nancy or Sonia at 610-647-6404 to schedule your appointment and receive the list of required documents that you will need to bring along to complete your return. You do not have to be an AARP member. There is no charge for this service, which will run from February 8 through April 5, however donations to Surrey are appreciated. Each year, requests for appointments exceed availability so please make your appointment today. March 1, 8, 15, 22 and 29 9 am - 3 pm by appointment

Bergamot: Used to reduce stress. Rose: Used to improve mood and reduce anxiety. Chamomile: Used for relaxation. Ylang-Ylang: Used to treat headaches. If you’re interested in trying an essential oil, find one that contains only aromatic plant compounds, without additives or synthetic oils. You can purchase an inexpensive diffuser that uses water to distribute the scent in your home. Then relax, take some deep breaths and enjoy the scent.
