February is Heart Health Month Know Your Numbers Your cholesterol, blood pressure, blood sugar and body mass index numbers are key indicators of your risk for serious illness. If you know these important numbers, you can make changes to improve your health and reduce your risk of developing heart disease, diabetes and other serious illnesses.

TOTAL BLOOD CHOLESTEROL – goal is < 180 mg/dL Cholesterol is a fatty substance that our bodies need to function. When there’s too much cholesterol in your blood, it can build up on the inside walls of your arteries and increase your risk of heart disease and stroke. The normal range for total cholesterol is 180 mg/dL or less. You also need to know your “healthy” HDL cholesterol and “bad” LDL cholesterol numbers. The optimal range for HDL cholesterol is more than 60 and LDL cholesterol should be less than 100. High total cholesterol, high LDL, or low HDL may increase your risk for a heart attack or stroke. There are no definite symptoms of high cholesterol, so it’s important to see your doctor and know your cholesterol numbers.

BLOOD PRESSURE – goal is 120/80 mmHG or less High blood pressure (hypertension) increases your risk of heart attack, stroke, and kidney disease. It also can damage your brain, eyes and arteries. Anyone can have high blood pressure, and many people do not have symptoms, so it’s important to check with your doctor, and know your numbers.

BLOOD SUGAR (GLUCOSE) – goal is < 130 mg/dL Glucose is sugar stored in your blood as your body’s main source of energy. The average blood sugar range is between 70 and 130. If your blood sugar is too high or too low, you may have diabetes.

BODY MASS INDEX – goal is < 25 kg/m2 Your body mass index (BMI) measures your weight in relation to your height. A BMI over 25 means that you are overweight, and a number over 30 indicates obesity. That extra weight can lead to health issues. A Heart Health article by UnitedHealthcare

Last year Surrey provided 15,500 rides 55,600 home delivered meals 32,400 nutritious meals at our sites 60,000 hours of volunteer services 68,000 hours of home services To more than 6,200 individuals

Bob’s Blog STAY WARM AND SAFE Here we are in February, one of the coldest months of the year. While the blooms of Spring are not that far away, we need to think about friends, neighbors and family members who may struggle when the weather is cold and wintery. Here is a story that I recently read: Vermont winters can be very cold. Last December, I wanted to save some money so I turned my heat down to 62°F. I didn’t know that would put my health in danger. Luckily, my son Tyler came by to check on me. He saw that I was only wearing a light shirt and that my house was cold. Ty said I was speaking slowly, shivering, and having trouble walking. He wrapped me in a blanket and called 9-1-1. Turns out I had hypothermia. My son’s quick thinking saved my life. Now on cold days, I keep my heat at least at 68°F and wear a sweater in the house. Here are some tips that you can share with your friends and family: • S et the heat to at least 68–70°F. To save on heating bills, close off rooms you are not using. Close the vents and shut the doors in these rooms, and keep the basement door closed. Place a rolled towel in front of all doors to keep out drafts. • When you go to sleep, wear long underwear under your pajamas, and use extra covers. Wear a cap or hat. • M ake sure you eat enough food to keep up your weight. If you don’t eat well, you might have less fat under your skin. Body fat helps you to stay warm. Check in on your loved ones on a regular basis to make sure they are OK and to show them that you care. If you think there is someone who would benefit from a friendly call, please contact our Member Services team at 610-647-6404. Stay warm!

Home Care Services News

Through the years, a number of individuals have contacted Surrey’s Personal Finance Management after the death of a partner. All too frequently, they do not know where to locate important paperwork including wills, bank statements, power of attorney etc. Grief makes a difficult task even more challenging. This Valentine’s Day, show your love, albeit in an untraditional way, and ease the burden on your survivor by discussing key financial matters.

If you are not sure where to start, this list, from AARP, is very comprehensive.  Gather financial papers. Store deeds, passports, estate documents in a fireproof box where they can be easily located by your partner.  Make a “must call” list. Compile contact information for accountants, lawyers and other professionals who need to be contacted.  Share passwords.  Update beneficiaries. Make sure beneficiary designations for your pension, 401(k), IRA, brokerage accounts still reflect your wishes.  Check credit cards. Make sure your partner’s name is on the credit card account. In some areas individuals can’t use a card that does not have his/her name on the account and will need to reapply for a credit card.  Set up advance directives. Make sure your living will and health care power of attorney are up to date and easily located.  Review wills and trusts. Make sure these documents are updated every few years.  Discuss funeral plans. This can save money and ease anxiety by letting the surviving partner know your wishes.  Make sure both of you know how bills are paid. Keep a list of how bills are paid so the survivor doesn’t miss a payment or overdraw an account.

Caregiver Support Groups Are a Lifeline in More Ways Than One Being a family caregiver is many things; rewarding, stressful, overwhelming and time consuming. The idea of taking precious time away from the person you are caring for to attend a monthly meeting may seem impossible. However, researchers have found that one of the main difficulties being a caregiver is isolation, which can lead to depression. And although online resources exist for questions, nothing replaces the sage advice and support of those who are in the same situation. They’ll understand the everyday successes and frustrations that others just don’t get. Not all support groups are the same. Here are a few different types to consider.

CONDITION SPECIFIC GROUPS These include groups for people caring for loved ones with Alzheimer’s, ALS, stroke or multiple sclerosis.

GROUPS FOR SPECIFIC KINDS OF CAREGIVERS These might be for specific relationships such as spouses/partners, adult children or men’s groups.

PEER LED SUPPORT GROUPS Members share responsibilities for facilitating the group.

GROUPS LED BY A TRAINED FACILITATOR The facilitator can be a social worker, clergy person or psychologist who helps keep the discussion on track and offers professional resources. Surrey offers a caregiver support group, Caregiver Connections, the third Tuesday of every month. I am a licensed social worker and lead the group. The group is free and all topics discussed are confidential. Surrey’s group has the extra benefit of being able to access all the services that Surrey offers. We welcome anyone in the community who would like to join. Donna Marshall, MSW, LCSW is a Clinical Assessment Manager for Surrey’s Home Care Services.

The Surrey Gala: Fun and Fundraising Does Surrey really need to throw a big party every year to raise money? YOU BET! The spring gala is Surrey’s most important fundraising event. Funds raised are directed to Surrey programs and services where they help keep prices and fees low and innovation high. Every year the gala is a great way to celebrate the unique community that is Surrey. Sponsors, guests, advertisers, volunteers, members and staff all support this event in different ways to help continue Surrey’s mission. We welcome and encourage participation from everyone. Here are a few ways you can help. If you know of a company or organization who is interested in being a gala sponsor, please ask them to contact the Development office at 610-6479774. Tickets will go on sale later this spring so watch for more information on the Surrey website. You can also help by purchasing a raffle ticket or bidding on an auction item. Each year the gala is a wonderful way to “friend-raise” and fundraise all for a great cause!

Consignment Corner One of the most popular items purchased at the Surrey Consignment Shop is silver. Some clients consign their silver because they don’t want the added work of cleaning it regularly. Here is an easy way to shine up your silver without a lot of elbow grease. Bring one liter of water, one tablespoon of baking soda, and one piece of aluminum foil to a boil. Drop silverware in the pot for 10 seconds (longer if it’s very tarnished), then remove using kitchen tongs.

EXCITING CHANGES AT THE SHOP The shop is pleased to announce an exciting change for 2019! The fee to consign items at the shop is now $20 annually. This is a great option for younger consignors who may not need all the benefits of a full Surrey membership, but want to help support Surrey through consignment. Existing Surrey members will continue to enjoy the ability to consign with us at any time as one of the many benefits of an annual membership. Questions or to make an appointment, call Liz at 610-647-8632.

MAKE A GIFT That Costs Nothing During Your Lifetime Did you know that you can make a gift today that will help support Surrey far into the future? This gift, also called a bequest, is a gift through your will or trust. It’s simple to make, costs you nothing during your lifetime and has flexibility so that it meets your personal objectives. You can direct your gift to meet Surrey’s greatest needs or to support a specific program that’s meaningful to you. You can also use a bequest to make a tribute gift that honors someone special. Surrey has a variety of resources that can help you plan your gift with your financial advisor. Visit surreyservices.plannedgiving.org for more information or call Kathleen at 484-321-6101.
