“Successful aging: An Owner’s Manual” is the topic of a CARP gathering at White Rock Community Centre this coming Thursday, June 13. The lunchtime event features guest speaker Dr. Larry Dian, a geriatric medicine specialist in Vancouver, and his “top 10 successful aging tips.” Dr. Dian is recognized around the world for his work on healthy aging, according to event organizers. Forum participants will “learn about specific activities, changes and strategies that contribute to vital, energetic lifestyle.” Thursday’s event, which runs from 11:30 a.m. to 1:30 p.m., will also feature a Zumba Gold demonstration by Cherie Sutherland and a talk about the benefits of cycling with Damien O’Hagan, of Peninsula Cycles. The fee to attend is $5 (lunch included), at 15154 Russell Ave., White Rock. The event is hosted by the White Rock/Surrey chapter of CARP, a national organization devoted to “A New Vision of Aging for Canada.” To RSVP, contact Denise by phone, 604-538-5778.

ADVICE FROM PEOPLE WHO LIVE IN THE ROYALE PENINSULA RETIREMENT RESIDENCE:

Ask the Residents

for our personal appointments and shopping. Most importantly, think about how the building made you feel when you visited: is the atmosphere welcoming? Do the residents look friendly, comfortable and happy? Follow up with the places you have visited to clarify some details that may appear equal, but in fact may not be. IE: at our residence the emergency response is provided by a health care professional, but some residences only have a night-house person or are monitored by an outside service. If all things are equal, participating in events may help you to learn the culture of the building. Find out what you can join in, whether it is a meal, an activity, a social, or even a trial stay in the guest suite. Happy home hunting! - the Residents

DEAR RESIDENTS: I have toured a number of retirement residences and each one has different strengths. How do I choose the right one for me? - E.P. DEAR E.P.: Write a list of the things important to you, and then ask your family and friends for their insights. Also think to the future with honesty - your needs may change as the years progress, so you want to be sure there is personal assistance available in order to stay independent. Review the neighbourhood: at the Royale Peninsula we have a great location for amenities and also a shuttle bus available
