Located just south of the Sechura Desert in Central Peru, exactly 1 hour north of Trujillo by car, not only is Chicama arguably the world’s longest wave - at around 2 miles - but it’s essentially a perfect wave on any scale. The winds are offshore virtually all day/ every day and, together with the well groomed sand bottom, conditions are of high quality more often than not. Due to Chicama’s steady pace and machine-like precision, the wave is really suitable for all skill levels. Together, with its length of ride (about 3 minutes or more from El Point to the pier) and its steady, predictable pace, Chicama gives you time to think and to play and to line up sections and to try new things. It’s also suitable for all kinds of surfers, from flashy shortboarders to cruisey longboarder.

Right in the town of Mancora is a beautiful, long left point break. This is a very user-friendly wave that is suitable for (and fun for) surfers of all kinds. The wave tends to be mellow but there are enough walls to allow for nice turns and airs. When the sand banks and tides are right, barrels are occasionally an option as well. Mancora is a fun little town too and it’s a great spot to spend a few days surfing, relaxing and enjoying what the town has to offer.

Lobitos is one of the best left-hand barrels in northern Peru and it can be an absolute gem of a wave that peels down the line perfectly. To access the waves here, you’ll either jump off the rocks or paddle out from the beach, depending on the section you’re surfing and the conditions. The Lobitos area is made up of a series of beautiful left sections that begin out at the fartherst point, known as El Hueco. The wave starts off breaking right in front of the rocks, with a critical takeoff that turns straight into a hollow barrel. When conditions are right, this barrel will stay open the whole way through to the next section, known as La Frontera. The wave continues to peel and barrel as it runs through. The next section is simply known as Lobitos and this is either a top to bottom wave that produces beautiful carving walls and a barrel, or a slightly softer, more user-friendly wave that can be more forgiving, depending on the wind and tides. Pacasmayo is a very long left-hand pointbreak located just north of Chicama. Like its famous neighbor to the south, Pacasmayo can be absolutely perfect, while picking up twice as much swell and delivering an equally long yet faster and more barreling wave. It’s often referred to as Chicama’s big brother and just 35 minutes north by car, its the go-to wave when Chicama is small. Some even find the wave to be more mechanical than Chicama, with less noticeable sections. The downside here is that Pacasmayo is often affected by poor winds, especially in the afternoons, while Chicama will stay offshore all day, everyday. The south to north running current also makes for a tough paddle and it can almost run like a river on bigger days. Crowds at Pacasmayo are on the rise but the length of ride and frequency of sets still tend to provide enough chances for everyone.
