WRECK OF THE ‘JOSEPH H SCAMMELL’ CONT.: Extracts from ‘History of Torquay’ by James A Baines 1938 Mr P Holden, the Customs officer in charge of the wreck, with three mounted police and several constables were camped on the beach for the protection of the revenue. The remains of the hull and wreck had canted over to the weather side, and numbers of dark objects washed out after the decks had burst were seen floating in with the tide. In some places sections of the decking were found at high water mark, where the retreating tide had left them, and a little further on the lower half of the mainmast was lying. An interesting relic of the wreck was a considerable portion of the stern, wrenched off from the rest of the hull, and carved upon it in gilt letters, the words JOSEPH H. SCAMMELl, ST. JOHN, N.B. On Saturday a large trunk of clothing, belonging to the wife of the captain, was washed ashore unharmed, a suit of clothes owned by the mate, also arrived on the beach during the day, and was welcomed by the owner.
