a Year In Review What a year it has been in the Surf Soap House. We've hired two amazing teammates, and I couldn't be more grateful to them for their flexibility and creativity when times got tough. This was our first full year in business, and it came with its challenges. During the busiest time of the year - summer - we were hit with a family emergency, and our customers reached out immediately to send their love while they patiently waited for orders. We felt so much love and aloha this year and we cannot wait to see where this next year takes us.

Our highlights: - Hired Mia and Maria! Couldn't have done this without you! - Hit over 1000 IG followers - Finalized and released our Post Surf Collection - Made the front page of Google - Released our Perfume Oils

There is so much more to come and I want to thank you from the bottom of my heart for your love, your support and your loyalty to our Hale and our mission.

Here's to 2022!!

5 neighbor gifts T H E Y ' L L

A C T U A L L Y

L I K E

Struggling to come up with a gift idea for a neighbor, coworker, or friendly acquaintance that is actually liked and/or used by them? You’re not alone, but fear no more! Your neighbors will love these gifts, and the thought you’ve put into them!

Anything in a jar! For one, we love this as 1) you may already have some jars laying around to be repurposed; 2) no need for extra wrapping as glass jars are cute and trendy on their own (bonus points for decorative recipe layering); and 3) jars can be re-repurposed by its new owner! This low-budget gift idea can turn into a fun activity and tasty treat for your neighbors to cook or prepare a recipe in a jar.

Artwork Artwork is often something that people don’t spend money on for themselves. From refrigerator magnets, paintings, small table ornaments and even holiday themed decorations, there are many possibilities for you to either create your own art or support a local artist.

Plants I have yet to hear of someone who has been displeased with being given a plant. You’re likely to know enough about your neighbor to see if they have a green thumb, but in the case you don’t - keep the plant babies small and easily managed. Both succulents and airplants are pretty low maintenance.

Bath Salts and Candles Help make a DIY spa night a reality for your neighbor! Imagine soaking in a tub with a fresh bath scrub and a smelly good candle to keep the zen during the chaos of the holiday season. These are great gifts because you can find some really neat local candle shops, and many Zero Waste Stores offer refills for bath salts and soaps!

Zero Waste Kit Utensil kit, beeswax wraps, mesh produce bags, metal straw and straw brush. There are many zero waste gifts that your neighbors may not know they’re missing! When you share your love for these products, your neighbor is bound to love them too.

Winter is as much a time for wonder as it is

more easily snagged and tangled. When going to brush and detangle your hair, the yanking action of the brush can cause further breakage and split ends.

The dryness and breakage that comes along with winter weather also aren’t doing your hair color any favors either, especially if you have color-treated hair. This is because dry weather causes the hair to lose its sense of vibrancy and shine.

If you’ve ever brushed your hair out in the morning, only to have it stand on end as if you’d just rubbed a balloon all over it, then you’ve experienced winter’s not-so-fun hair punishment: static. It’s that combination of dryness and tangles that creates the perfect conditions for hair static.

Sounds like a lot of damage, right? Well, all of this damage can be easily avoided with a few hacks!

TOP WINTER HAIRCARE TIPS Hats Wool, cotton, and other fabrics can cause breakage as well, so make sure to line your hat with silk or satin to help prevent damage. Fight static

electricity under your hat by using a dry oil spray. Dry oils are weightless and contain natural oils that moisturize hair, bringing back its shine.

avoid heat styling Allowing your hair to air dry is best. Blow drying draws moisture out of

your hair, increasing the chance of breakage while heat-free drying helps keep your hair shiny and healthy. Embrace your natural hair and air-dry whenever possible. Don’t have enough time to air dry? Try taking your

shower in the evening so your hair can dry naturally overnight - you can use a silk pillowcase or cotton t-shirt to prevent overnight static.

WET HAIR IS INDOORS ONLY Wet hair is more vulnerable to damage than dry hair. When hair is wet, the proteins form weaker hydrogen bonds than when hair is dry. The

structure of the hair strand changes, causing it to stretch and become

thinner. Thus, walking outside with a head of wet hair can cause hair to

freeze and break. While air drying is best, if in a hurry, it’s better to blow dry your hair than leave it to air dry in the cold.

Surf Soap Sledding Through!

Pssst… In addition to the at-home hacks, we have a few products that will work wonders for your icicle tresses!

LEAVE-IN CONDITIONERS FOR WINTER HAIR Rehab Balm Rehab Balm uses coconut milk and cupuacu butter to provide deep conditioning, aloe, and marshmallow to promote hair growth, and mango and quinoa to provide protection and strength - after all, protection is what our hair craves during the winter.

Muku milk Muku Milk utilizes chlorella to assist in tissue regeneration, a high concentration of amino acids to build collagen, and carrot to provide moisture - an array of ingredients to combat any winter storm.

"Be like the sea consistent and wild and free." SURF SOAP'S QUOTE OF THE YEAR 2021; BY KAYLA PEARSON

The Love You Found when holidays are hard Between balancing finances, expectations, obligations, time and travel the holidays can be a challenging time for many, and it’s easy to get wrapped up in the chaos.

Be patient and be kind. Not only to others but to yourself as well.

Feel like there’s too much going on for the amount of time you actually have? Take it one day at a time. Write out your to-do list or spend some time organizing your calendar. Checking off boxes and crossing off calendar days can be very therapeutic.

Money during the holidays can be tight and unfortunately the consumerism of our capitalist society rages high during this time. Spend your time in the moment, and celebrate the little, simple joys with friends and family. “The thought that counts” really does go far.

Obligations. Or situations that may feel like obligations. Remember that you can’t give others your best when you’re not giving yourself your best.

Yes there are many real reasons that the holidays can be hard. Find time to meditate, take a walk, treat yourself to a holiday coffee or cocoa, snuggle in with a blanket and a movie, create your own expectations for what you want your holiday season to look like. Much easier said than done, but you deserve grace and peace and joy as much as you look to give others that same grace, peace and joy.

The love we find for ourselves can light the love we share to others.

CHANGING MAT/BAG Many surfers, particularly during cold temperatures, wear a wetsuit to maintain their body heat. Changing in and out of that wetsuit is a quick process that often forces a surfer to lay their wetsuit on the ground to rinse off their board. This causes the neoprene to wear and tear - which is an unfortunate circumstance because wetsuits are quite expensive. Here's our pick: Surf Grass Mat

TRACTION PAD Traction Pads are used on the tail of a surfboard (typically a shortboard) to increase grip and allow for more extreme maneuvers. They aren’t easily interchangeable so I would make sure the person you’re getting this for has a new board without a traction pad or is getting a new board soon. Not every surfer uses traction pads, but if they do and they buy a lot of surfboards, they will find it to be a great gift. Here's Our Pick: ecoPro Cork Pad

LEASH Surfers can’t shout it from the rooftops enough, “Surf leashes are a must!” Every surfer needs a leash, or two. At least one for each board is the minimum. What a lot of surfers don’t have is a backup leash. If the surf is good, and the surf shop is closed, your leash can break, and you’ll find yourself scrambling to search for an old leash or a buddy to borrow one from. Leashes can also break during a surf sesh, forcing you to either end it early or search for the nearest shop to purchase one. Get them a new leash as a backup and they’ll be stoked. Here's Our Pick: Sympl Supply Co

G I F T ,

CHANGING PONCHO Changing ponchos are quite literally lifechanging. A changing poncho is a handy piece of gear as it makes changing in and out of a wetsuit a little more discrete and a lot warmer than a towel. They’re also multi-purpose, a changing poncho easily doubles as a bathrobe or as part of a wizard costume next Halloween. This is one gift that any surfer would use and appreciate. Here's Our Pick: Nomadix Surf Poncho SURF SOAP We’re specially formulated for surfers, providing them with skin and hair care products that are safe for them as well as the ocean. Surf Soap is also travel-sized for on-the-go and smells like the best parts of the beach. Choose from our Dawn Patrol Collection, Post Surf, or Build Your Own Kit

gases during this time of year.

HERE ARE THE BEST TIPS WE COULD FIND TO CREATE A SUSTAINABLE THANKSGIVING FEAST WITH EVERYONE YOU LOVE.

Getting Ready / Party Planning Use a meal planner, such as Perfect Potluck, to coordinate with guests and avoid having too much food (or not enough bread rolls..)

Encourage guests to bring their own reusable dishes rather than disposable ones. This is tough for a bigger party, so a balanced suggestion we have is to utilize things like paper cups, real silverware, and strong paper plates instead of plastic utensils. Then, leave out a bin labeled “used utensils”. At the end of the day, you can fill the bin with soap and water and use it as the wash bin.

Have an obviously labeled Recycle / Compost bins out for everyone to use

Utilize small washcloths or towels instead of paper towels for guests to use in the bathroom

Make things from scratch wherever possible. Around 83 percent of greenhouse gas emissions from food comes from its production, so the less packaged and prepared food you buy, the lower your carbon footprint. Plus, there’s just something so magical about putting your own TLC into a meal for sharing with others.

Take stock of your ingredients before you shop. There’s a good chance you’ll find an unopened bottle of vanilla extract in the back of the cupboard. You’re welcome.

Plan ahead for food storage options. If you have a local thrift store close by, this is a great time to find some cute antique casserole dishes that can be given to guests to take leftovers home in. Alternatively, you can encourage them to bring some of their own.

Sustainable Thanksgiving Shopping

There are two types of people in the world – those who love to shop for a party and those that detest it. Whether you’re on one side of the coin or the other, the shopping’s gotta get done. Here’s 5 ways to make it more sustainable.

Bring those shopping bags – and don’t forget your produce bags! This might seem like a no-brainer, but ask yourself. Are your bags back in the car right now after your last shopping trip? (You’re welcome)

Buy in bulk whenever possible. Make use of the bins – you’ll probably save yourself a few dollars as well. This also goes for bigger portions, which use less packaging than buying 3 of the same item from a smaller grocery store.

Buy as much locally produced food as you can. The closer your food is, the lower its environmental impact. Many local farms are offering “farmboxes” that offer not only locally and organically grown produce, but also make use of what’s in season near you – this means more flavorful, fresh and fun meals to create while also supporting your local food economy.

Stick to your list. Not only is this healthy for your wallet, but also helps reduce food that looks great on the shelves but ends up not being used come Thanksgiving day.

Meal Prep – Sustainably.

Save your veggie scraps! You can freeze them and use them for stock later on.

Recycle everything you can. Check your packaging beforehand, and recycle appropriately while things are quiet and you’ve got the brainpower.

Make prepping as easy as possible by setting out a compost bowl, a recycle bowl and trash bin.

Invest in a good roasting pan. The aluminum pan we all love to use won’t be able to be recycled if it’s covered in turkey dinner. Also, that pan will last for ages and actually save you money in the long run!

Minimize and coordinate oven time. If you live in a warmer climate, you can also make use of your outdoor grill – while not as good for baking, it can hold a fairly steady temperature that you can use for cooking vegetables, casseroles, etc.

Now, Hawaii has some of its own unique Christmas traditions. CHRISTMAS PALMS

This tree is known as the Norfolk pine, a pine tree that grows extremely well in humidity and replicates a traditional Christmas tree.
