What is MMDS? MMDS stands for Multichannel Multipoint Distribution Service. This is a wireless point-tomultipoint specification. It uses Ultra High Frequency (UHF) communications. Overview The Multichannel Multipoint Distribution Service works with frequencies licensed by the FCC. The FCC has separated the US into Basic Trading Areas (BTAs). It gave the Multichannel Multipoint Distribution Service transmission rights to the providers in those areas. The hand plan for the service can be found at the FCC website. Technical Specifications The service is fixed with a maximum bandwidth of 10 MB. Packets/circuits are not applicable. The frequency is 2.5 GHz to 2.686 GHz. The range is 70 miles. The definer is the IEEE (Institute of Electrical and Electronic Engineers). There is no host network. DOCSIS+ The Multichannel Multipoint Distribution Service and LMDS are using the DOCSIS (Data over Cable Service Interface Specification). This is taken from the world of cable modems. The DOCSIS used is DOCSIS +. It has been modified from the standard DOCSIS so it works with wireless broadband. MMDS Data Transport The chief form of security is traffic flow encryption. The encryption is done between the WMTS (Wireless Modem Termination System) and the broadband wireless modem. The WMTS is found at the network provider’s base station. It is done by way of Triple DES. DOCSIS+ has many functions. In terms of security, it reduces the possibility of service theft. This is made possible because WMTS encryption is mandatory. It also requires authenticated client/server key-management protocol. The WMTS manages the keying material distribution material to the modem. The LMDS and the Multichannel Multipoint Distribution Service employ the DOCSIS+ keymanagement protocol. This is used to get traffic encryption material and authorization off the WMTS. It also provides key refresh and periodic reauthorization. The protocol uses Triple DES encryption, RSA public key encryption and X.509 digital certificates. Using these components, data exchanges between the WMTS and the modem are kept secure. For this to work, it is imperative that all the components are working properly. Other Information Multichannel Multipoint Distribution Service has some similarities with LMDS. However, the range is much wider compared to LMDS. In some cases, the Distribution Service is referred to as Multipoint Microwave Distribution System. Some call it Multi-channel Multi-point Distribution System. All three point to the same technology.
