Suquamish Partners with WDFW to Study Local Forage Fish Beach Spawning EPA grant-funded project will lead to better habitat protection throughout the Puget Sound

Their nickname comes from the fact that many species depend upon their nourishment to survive. Surf smelt and Pacific sand lance lay their eggs intertidally on our sandy beaches. Many of these beaches are disappearing due to shoreline development and modification.

As we move forward into the new year, we would like to focus on a summary of the grant results we realized in 2016. The majority of these were grants were highly competitive opportunities for funding new projects developed and proposed by your Tribal Department’s professional staff, with assistance from the Grants Department, while several were non-competitive, continuation grant funds that are awarded every year.

“Suquamish Home Visiting Program” grant to the Department of Health and Human Services’ Tribal Maternal, Infant, and Early Childhood Home Visiting Program for developing a home visiting program providing family health and early learning services to Suquamish families for the Marion Forsman-Boushie Early Learning Center. We were not awarded the $288,239 funding request.

The continuation grant for the 2017 Special Diabetes Program for Indians from the Indian Health Service for diabetes prevention and management services in the amount of $53,749 was awarded to the Human Services Department, Community Health Program.

Chief Kitsap Academy Wraps Up Historic Season With Trip to State Finals

For the Chief Kitsap Academy (CKA) Bears Boys Varsity Basketball Team, this season has been all about turnovers and fast breaks. Their signature moves of forcing their opponents to a quick decision, and outperforming under pressure earned them a #8 spot in the Tri-Districts tournament and #12 overall in state for Class 1B teams.

“I knew from the beginning of the season that we had what it took to go to state, we just had to perform,” said CKA Bears Coach Dietreich Ross.

And perform they did. The Bears ended regular play with a 6-3 league record and 13-6 overall this season. They started strong in the playoffs with an 87-55 win over Shoreline Christian on February 14, but fell short two days later with a 57-32 loss to Lummi. Not to be kept down, the Bears battled back, winning by just 2 points against Rainier Christian in their final loser-out playoff game on February 18 (69-67). The win clinched a #7 seed in the Washington State 1B Boys State Championship Hardwood Classic in Spokane, Washington, March 1-4, 2017. Depending upon their regional performance against Sunnyside Christian, the Bears will be playing either March 1, or March 2 at the 1B State Championship Tournament. Ecology Class Helps Map Sam Wilson Wetland

Western Washington University students learn GPS Mapping in Suquamish

Twenty-five students from Western Washington University’s OCC campus Ecosystem Management class spent a recent January weekend mapping Sam Wilson wetland off Widme Road. Lectures by Suquamish staff, including Tom Curley and Paul Dorn, introduced the class to GPS mapping techniques and the Cowling Creek watershed. Sam Wilson wetland forms the headwaters of Cowling Creek. Joanne Bartlett, a professional wetlands expert, demonstrated how wetlands are delineated using water, soils, and plant diversity. During their weekend in Suquamish, the students also met Duane Pasco, who shared how ecosystems support culture using examples of Tribal and early European watercraft and his latest totem carving project.

Help End Violence Against Women

”Start by Believing” campaign to end sexual assaults kicks off March 30

As we head into Spring, the Suquamish Victim Services program is preparing to recognize April as Sexual Assault Awareness month. Our program will be focusing on an End Violence Against Women International campaign called “Start By Believing”.

We are working to put an end to the cycle of silence.

We can begin by speaking out. After a sexual assault, most victims turn to someone for help. Far too often the response is doubt or blame, and they never tell anyone else. They don’t get the help they need, and they don’t report the crime. We stop this cycle of silence by believing victims when they come forward and helping them on the path to justice and healing.

Start By Believing campaign and facilitating a discussion session about how members of the community can participate in the campaign. Together we can stop the victim blaming and shame and work on ways to support victims in the healing process. Please contact Maureen Victim Services will be holding an event March 30, from Olson in Victim Services at 360-394-7156 if you have 12-1pm in council chambers to screen a video from the questions.

Chairman’s Report

The months of January and February 2017 were noteworthy for the inauguration and new administration actions by the new President. We, like most of the nation, are still waiting to see how the President will govern now that he is in office. The Inauguration event in Washington DC featured some native events that occur every inaugural regardless of which party is elected.

The National Congress of American Indians held a Presidential Transition Team meeting for Tribal leaders. Members of the Trump Transition Team representing Health and Human Services, the Department of the Interior and other federal agencies held a listening session the day before the inauguration. They made very few comments and did not take any questions. Tribal leaders brought up several issues and concerns including climate change concerns in Alaska, maintaining land into trust momentum set by the Obama administration, protecting and enhancing health care for Indian Country, concerns about the border wall and its impacts on reservations in Arizona.

A Republican staff member of the Senate Committee on Indian Affairs outlined the priorities of the SCIA moving forward. We will be relying heavily on the US Senate and US House to protect our budgets and our treaty rights in response to any negative actions taken by the Trump Administration.

Mike Andrews said that he was hoping to get the Indian Housing (NAHASDA) bill reauthorized, that they are pleased that the Assistant Secretary for Indian Affairs position in the Department of the Interior had been elevated to undersecretary of the Interior status, and that Indian Health Service director appointment, according the White House, would be non-partisan in nature and based on qualifications for the post.

The National Museum of the American Indian held an inaugural ball at their facility near the Capitol the night of the inauguration. The NMAI is starting a new initiative to build a memorial for American Indians and have a temporary exhibit documenting the service of Indian people in the military. We had the opportunity to meet Congressman Ryan Zinke (R-Montana) at the event who is the nominee for the Secretary of the Interior. Mr. Zinke is a retired Navy Seal, grew

Holiday Crafts at the Youth Center

After a round of hot chocolates at the Hansville Grocery, six of our youth went to the Point No Point lighthouse where we walked the beach. Afterward, we went and had lunch at Buck Lake followed by a few exciting rounds of hide and go seek and tag as we hiked to the farther observation deck in the Hansville greenway.

Though it was a bit chilly, all the youth had a wonderful time! The hike is part of a broader outdoor activities effort during winter months.

Anderson Appointed to PME Board of Directors

Philanthropist and long-time Tribal Employee brings passion for non-profit work to the position

Suquamish Tribal member Windy Anderson, was recently appointed to the Port Madison Enterprises (PME) Board of Directors. Her dedication to community, friends and family made her an ideal candidate for the position.

Anderson spent majority of her life in Indianola with her mother, Mable Anderson. At a young age she desired to become a chef because she loved cooking. As an adult, cooking is still one of her passions, but her career resides with the Suquamish Tribe as the Tribal Council Executive Assistant.

With all her duties, her goal is to make a difference for the tribe and its people. “I would like to improve the communication from the Tribe to the Tribal Members. I think this could be accomplished by informing members to visit the tribal website, and having weekly event sheets available,” said Anderson.

Philanthropy is one of the activities Anderson enjoys most. She currently sits on the board for the Tasha Mitchell O.T.T.E.R.S
