INNOVATION

Summer 2015

MAKI N G H O PE HAPPEN Cancer is one of the most frightening words an individual can hear. Along with fear of the unknown, an unexpected diagnosis and the journey of cancer also brings exhausting emotional challenges and mounting financial burdens. For the second annual Day of Hope, the entire Santa Maria Valley united in the fight against cancer to support Marian Cancer Care patients and families at Mission Hope Cancer Center. Above, students from St. Louis de Montfort Catholic School and St. Joseph High School joined 400 fellow community members by hawking special edition Santa Maria Times newspapers to thousands throughout the region. Due to the generosity of our community, the second annual Day of Hope raised more than $135,000! Marian Regional Medical Center and Mission Hope Cancer Center wish to thank the thousands of community members whose generosity provides hope to Central Coast cancer patients and families who are going through what may be the most difficult time in their lives.

LETTER FRO M TH E PRESI D ENT HONORING OUR PAST, CELEBRATING OUR FUTURE This year, Marian Regional Medical Center celebrates its 75-year legacy of health and healing. To commemorate this milestone anniversary, we are proud to share Marian’s historic journey from its humble beginnings as a rural community hospital to its present day standing as a regional, teaching medical center that ranks among the finest hospitals. Marian’s founders, the Sisters of St. Francis, were called to Santa Maria to build, open, and staff a hospital urgently needed by a growing community. Hailed as pillars of the community, the Sisters were widely respected by all and the hospital became fondly referred to as “Sisters’ Hospital” by community members. When Marian opened its doors three-quarters of a century ago, the population of the entire city of Santa Maria was 8,000. Now in 2015, Marian is a regional medical center that serves both Santa Maria and the entire Central Coast, a population of nearly 250,000. Although the advancement of medical technologies continue to redefine how medicine is delivered at Marian, our commitment to provide our community with exceptional care has remained and has never wavered. Since Marian’s inception, we have been guided by the Sisters’ visionary leadership to deliver high quality compassionate care. Today we are still fulfilling that commitment as evidenced by the development of specialty and sub-specialty clinical services, publicly reported patient care outcomes, and our notable clinical affiliations with Stanford, UCLA, and USC which provide access to tertiary services in our own community. As a result of your continued support, Marian is proud to be a top ranked hospital, earning notable accolades for quality, safety, and service. Recently, Marian was named one of Healthgrades Best 100 Hospitals for Critical Care, received Healthgrades 2015 Distinguished Hospital Award for clinical excellence, and earned an “A” rating from the Leapfrog Group for patient safety. Marian was also the recent recipient of the Women’s Choice Award for America’s best cancer care hospitals and the Greenhealth Partner for Change award for implementing, improving, and expanding a significant number of environmental programs. Throughout Marian’s legacy, philanthropy has remained essential to the medical center’s growth and development. Your meaningful philanthropic gifts drive the medical center’s healing work, and ultimately fuel Marian’s enduring evolution from a community hospital to a regional medical center. Marian is forever grateful to our countless and loyal supporters; with you, Marian has been able to successfully achieve this milestone anniversary. In gratitude,

A PRO M ISE FU LFI LLED Marian celebrates Phase I completion of the Heart Center Expansion

At Marian Regional Medical Center’s Heart Center, our expert medical professionals understand that when it comes to saving a life, precious seconds count. The recent opening of Marian’s Cardiac Interventional Hybrid Suite marks the official completion of Phase I of the medical center’s Heart Center Expansion Project. As the centerpiece of the Heart Center Expansion Project, the Cardiac Interventional Hybrid Suite features leading-edge surgical technology paired with highly sophisticated imaging capabilities. In the majority of hospitals throughout the nation, cardiac operating rooms and cardiac catheterization laboratories are often located in different areas and sometimes even different floors. As such, if medical emergencies arise during surgical interventions, patients have to be transferred from a cardiac catheterization laboratory to a surgical operating room. With the Cardiac Interventional Hybrid Suite now a reality, it only takes a matter of seconds for physicians and support staff

to convert a minimally invasive procedure into a traditional surgical procedure—all without moving the patient. This is because physicians now have immediate access to all equipment and technology needed for any emergency cardiac situation, allowing for greater versatility, improved techniques, and superior patient outcomes.

PHASE I: MISSION COMPLETE On June 17, 2015, Marian Regional Medical Center unveiled its newly completed Cardiac Interventional Hybrid Suite at a grand opening celebration honoring Marian Heart Center Expansion Project contributors. The Marian Foundation wishes to extend sincere thanks and gratitude to the many who gave generously in support of the Marian Heart Center Expansion Project. Due to your meaningful contributions, the Marian Foundation achieved its ambitious goal to raise $1.5 million from community donations.

PHASE II: ELECTROPHYSIOLOGY SERVICES With Phase I complete, Marian is now embarking on the second and final phase of the Heart Center Expansion Project. Phase II will transform the medical center’s original cardiac catheterization laboratory into a modern facility with sophisticated electrophysiology technology for cardiac rhythm management. Cardiologists specializing in electrophysiology are electricians of the heart as they are highly experienced in treating patients with heart rhythm disorders. Atrial fibrillation is the most common heart rhythm disorder, affecting more than 4% of the population over age 60. Patients with this dangerous abnormal heart rhythm are at an increased risk of experiencing a potentially disabling or even fatal stroke by nearly 500%. Atrial fibrillation causes the two upper chambers of the heart to quiver instead of beating properly. As a result, blood is not effectively pumped to the body, causing clotting that can travel to the brain or cause an artery blockage leading to a stroke. Currently, patients who suffer from atrial fibrillation and other heart rhythm disorders must travel out of the area for care, however once Marian’s new cardiac catheterization laboratory with electrophysiology services is completed in December of this year, heart rhythm disorder patients and their families will no longer need to leave the Santa Maria Valley for care. Although the Marian Foundation was successful in recently achieving the community philanthropic goal of $1.5 million for the Heart Center Expansion Project, more work has yet to be done. If you would like to see your charitable gift make a

A REMARKABLE GIFT Wood-Claeyssens Foundation supports Heart Center with $400,000 grant Philanthropic gifts have the power to provide essential needs, drive change, and above all else improve society. The Wood-Claeyssens Foundation understands the value of giving and is dedicated to enhancing the quality of life in the local community through grant funding support. Through its grant-making to nonprofit organizations, the Wood-Claeyssens Foundation enables those in need to acquire the basic necessities of life—food, clothing, shelter, social services, public safety, and self-actualization—and to enhance their quality of living.

Striving to make a deeply positive impact in the local community and recognizing the critical need for Marian Regional Medical Center to provide the highest level of cardiac care, the Wood-Claeyssens Foundation recently awarded Marian a grant for $400,000 for Phase II of the project. The Marian Foundation is grateful to the Wood-Claeyssens Foundation for their continued partnership and ongoing support of the medical center.

A G I FT FRO M TH E H EART Shirley and Raymond Kimlinger’s story

Marian Heart Center. In addition to the expert medical care she has received, Shirley’s undying love for her husband and family is apparent to all and is what keeps her going. “I’m not about to let go,” asserts Shirley with a twinkle in her eye. “Having heart disease can be a scary thing, not knowing what’s to come in the future.” Since the day Shirley and Raymond moved to Santa Maria nearly 50 years ago it felt like home. So recently when the Kimlingers chose to stand behind a worthy philanthropic cause, they identified with the Marian Heart Center and made the decision to make a major gift in support of the program that quite literally has remained near and dear to their hearts.

Raymond and Shirley Kimlinger

Every donation has a story. For Shirley and Raymond Kimlinger their story started 25 years ago when Shirley experienced her first heart attack. It was the spring of 1990 when Shirley felt an intense pain in her shoulder that quickly traveled to her chest. Although she was not aware at the time, this would be the first of many health episodes in the years to come for Shirley including an angioplasty procedure, a second heart attack, and cardiac bypass surgery. With a slender frame and an energetic spring in her step, just by looking at Shirley you would never know of the health battles she has faced. Over the years, she has been a strong advocate for Marian Regional Medical Center, crediting the expert care she has received from her cardiologist, Samir Bhatt, MD, and the

Shirley explains, “We feel it is important; it’s the least we can do as we truly believe I am alive today because of the successful heart surgeries conducted at Marian.” In appreciation for exceptional care, Shirley sends Dr. Bhatt a card every Thanksgiving to not only express her continued gratitude, but to also share how many great-grandchildren she and her husband have welcomed during the year. At present, Shirley and Raymond have 13 great-grandchildren, but for this year’s letter she will get to tell her cardiologist about the fourteenth as they have another great-grandchild on the way. “Ray and I are very grateful and feel blessed every day for our health and ability to be productive,” concludes Shirley. “As a cardiac patient who has benefited from the program, I know just how fortunate we are to have Marian’s Heart Center Expansion become a reality.”

CELEBRATING 75 YEARS OF HEALTH CARE INNOVATION By the 1960s patient demand greatly exceeded the capacity of Our Lady of Perpetual Help Hospital, fondly referred to as “Sisters’ Hospital” by the community. Noted entrepreneur and philanthropists Captain G. Allan Hancock and his wife, Marian, donated the land for the site of a new hospital, and in 1967 Marian Hospital opened under the leadership of Sister Marilyn Ingram, OSF. Marian’s evolution through the latter half of the 20th century and beginning of the 21st century was marked by innovation and expansion. To continue to provide the highest level of care and service, Marian opened a new hospital in May of 2012, featuring the latest in advanced technology, most effective treatments, and medical professionals from the nation’s top training facilities.

1940 Our Lady of Perpetual Help Hospital

This year, Marian Regional Medical Center celebrates 75 years of fulfilling our promise to the community to provide exceptional health care for all. Founded by the Sisters of St. Francis of Penance and Christian Charity, Marian has evolved from a small community hospital to a large teaching hospital, offering advanced, tertiary care.

Our History Marian’s legacy of health and healing began in 1940 when the Sisters of St. Francis opened Our Lady of Perpetual Help Hospital, Marian’s predecessor. Although the Sisters had meager financial resources, they were driven by a vision—to provide for the medical and spiritual needs of the community. That vision, and the Sisters’ unwavering belief that “God will provide,” comprise the foundation upon which the medical center is built.

Our Culture From the humble beginnings of the 35-bed Our Lady of Perpetual Help Hospital to Marian’s new and modern 191-bed regional medical center, our promise has remained the same: to provide our community with exceptional medicine, today and every day. Our historic tradition paired with our Hello humankindness philosophy requires each and every person in our organization to deliver a patient experience that provides for both the physical and emotional needs of patients by unleashing the healing power of humanity.

Our Future As we celebrate 75 years of health care innovation, we offer great respect and gratitude to the Sisters of St. Francis for their visionary leadership and legacy of wellness, health, and healing. Despite the ever changing and challenging climate

Righetti Family

In celebration of providing 75 years of health care to the Santa Maria Valley, Marian Regional Medical Center would like to cordially thank the community for welcoming us into your family–and for being a part of ours. We are honored to share just a few of many special Marian families and friends who have developed a relationship with the medical center over the past 75 years. Without the support of our community, Marian would never have been able to reach this landmark anniversary.

The Righetti Family and baby Paul Righetti

Paul Righetti, rancher and member of a Santa Maria pioneer family, was born at Sisters’ Hospital in 1948. Together with his wife, Susan, the Righettis are strong supporters of Marian. Susan served on the Marian Foundation Board of Directors for a number of years, in addition to serving as Board Chair.

MAKI N G H O PE HAPPEN Second annual Day of Hope breaks record

For the second year in a row, Day of Hope united the entire Santa Maria community in the fight against cancer. On April 16, 2015, more than 50 enthusiastic teams comprised of 400 community members took to the streets for one sole purpose: to sell $1 special edition Day of Hope Santa Maria Times newspapers in support of Marian Cancer Care patients and families at Mission Hope Cancer Center. This year’s event not only met the goal of $100,000, it far surpassed it by raising in excess of $135,000! For many, Day of Hope’s cause hits close to home. During the event, countless participants were inspired to share remarkably touching stories of how so many are affected by cancer and the special, personal reasons for volunteer involvement or purchasing of a Day of Hope newspaper. Robert Dichmann, MD, Medical Director, Marian Cancer Care, explains, “When patients initially come to Mission Hope Cancer Center they often begin their journey thinking, ‘I’m the only one.’ After starting treatment, they are always surprised by who they encounter: friends and neighbors. Day of Hope exemplifies how the community takes care of us, and how our little community at Mission Hope Care Center takes care of patients.”

Keenan Rodarte, Maggi Daane, Meggan Rodarte, Lauren Pincot, and Anne Rigali, sell special edition Day of Hope Santa Maria Times newspapers.

The incredible success of Day of Hope would not be possible without overwhelming support from generous event sponsors, dedicated team leaders and participants, and a compassionate community. Marian Regional Medical Center, in partnership with the Santa Maria Times, extends heartfelt thanks to all who gave meaningful gifts of support through donations and volunteerism. One hundred percent of all Day of Hope proceeds are applied to Marian Cancer Care, bringing vital programs and services to our patients, families, and community. Even though the event is over, you can still support local cancer patients and families at Mission Hope Cancer Center. For more information, please contact the Marian Foundation at 805.739.3595.

BUILDING A PIPELINE FOR QUALITY PHYSICIANS Marian Family Medicine Residency Program welcomes second class of physician residents

For generations, family medicine physicians have remained the backbone of health care, serving as patients’ lifetime guardians to coordinate all levels of care–from prenatal care to geriatrics and every stage in between. In response to the growing national shortage of family medicine physicians, Marian Regional Medical Center embarked on a landmark opportunity to build a strong primary care infrastructure by instituting the Marian Family Medicine Residency Program. One year after the program’s inception in July of 2014, Marian now welcomes its second class of physician residents: six talented physicians from the nation’s leading academic institutions who share an inspiring passion to be the best and brightest in their field.

“To now be a teaching hospital welcoming our second class of physicians, is an exciting time for Marian,” states Richard McClaflin, MD, Marian Family Medicine Residency Program Director. “In order to bring on a second class of six new physician residents we have developed new curriculum, added physician faculty, and greatly increased the number of community specialist physicians for rotation training.” The Marian Family Medicine Residency Program is led by five faculty physicians who obtain a wealth of experience in primary care. Additionally, the program has the involvement of more than 50 physicians from a wide variety of specialties for rotation training. As a dually-accredited, three-year, post- graduate program, the Marian Family Medicine Residency Program is affiliated with the Keck School of Medicine of the University of Southern California (USC) and Western University.

UROLOGIC SURGERY REVOLUTIONIZED Marian surgeons achieve unparalleled accuracy with da Vinci Surgical System

Marian Regional Medical Center’s da Vinci® Si Robotic Surgical System

Within the walls of Marian Regional Medical Center’s operating room number seven is a technological breakthrough that is redefining surgery: the da Vinci® Si Robotic Surgical System. Marian instituted its Robotic Surgery Program in 2011, utilizing the da Vinci® Si Robotic Surgical System’s leading-edge technology for performing minimally-invasive procedures. Since the program’s inception, two new urologic surgeons have joined Marian’s fleet of highly experienced da Vinci trained surgeons: Samuel Kieley, MD, and Brett Lebed, MD. Both Dr. Kieley and Dr. Lebed are board-certified in urology and come to Marian from prestigious medical institutions. Dr. Kieley specializes in urologic oncology while Dr. Lebed is the only surgeon in the region specializing in female pelvic reconstruction. In addition to being fellowship-trained, these surgeons have a wealth of experience performing minimallyinvasive urologic procedures utilizing the da Vinci® Si Robotic Surgical System. In fact, in their training alone each surgeon performed hundreds of robotic cases. “As a urologic surgeon, the revolutionary da Vinci technology is a great advantage since it allows for a minimally-invasive approach with extreme precision, meaning smaller incisions, less pain, minimal blood loss, and overall a faster, more pleasant recovery for patients,” explains Dr. Kieley.

With a magnified 3D HD vision system and tiny wristed instruments, the da Vinci® Si Surgical System enables surgeons to operate with enhanced vision, accuracy, and control. The dexterity of the human hand is limited; however, the da Vinci’s wristed instruments can bend and rotate to far greater degrees than is humanly possible. Dr. Lebed adds, “In all, my patients are extremely pleased following da Vinci surgery. They are able to resume their daily activities just one week following surgery, but ultimately the da Vinci Surgical System allows patients to feel as if they have been given their lives back.” SAMUEL B. TH E CAI CCO FAM I LY Safeguarding health of mom and baby leads to a blessing fulfilled

When Julie and Joe Caicco found out they were embarking on the journey of parenthood after 40 they were overjoyed. From good nutrition to regular exercise, expectant mother Julie began doing everything possible to give her unborn baby a healthy start at life and all was going well with her pregnancy– until she hit 33 weeks. At only 33 weeks and five days gestation, Julie arrived at Marian Regional Medical Center after experiencing bouts of intense headaches and elevated blood pressure readings. Medical professionals at Marian quickly determined Julie was suffering from preeclampsia, a potentially dangerous high blood pressure disorder that can lead to seizures and can put the health of both mom and baby at risk. Unable to control her blood pressure, Julie’s condition required an emergency cesarean delivery and within just hours of arriving at the hospital, baby Giovanni Caicco was born at 4:24 p.m. on November 5, 2014, weighing four pounds, nine ounces. Born prematurely, baby Giovanni’s condition required expert neonatal care following delivery and he was immediately whisked to Marian’s Neonatal Intensive Care Unit (NICU), but not before Julie had the opportunity to kiss her new baby boy. “Looking back it was terribly difficult to be separated,” states Julie. “Even though I knew Giovanni’s prematurity called for neonatal care, I still felt as if I was cheated from one of life’s most precious bonding experiences.” Like many moms whose infants need emergency neonatal care, Julie did not get to embrace and truly meet her precious bundle of joy in his first few moments of life. She was separated from both her son and husband, as Joe went to the NICU to be with Giovanni while Julie went to recovery. Knowing the importance of this life changing experience, Marian’s Seven-month-old Giovanni Caicco was born prematurely and spent 16 days in Marian’s Neonatal Intensive Care Unit.

16

Maternal and Newborn Center strives at every opportunity to promote family bonding and to make special accommodations for unique family situations. Julie adds, “Once I was able, the staff wheeled me in my hospital bed into the NICU to meet Giovanni. Although it wasn’t immediately after birth, I was still able to hold my baby on my chest. It was a truly special moment; I tear up just thinking about it.”

Baby Giovanni spent a total of 16 days in Marian’s NICU. Now, Giovanni is right on track and is a happy and healthy baby boy who enjoys sitting up, eating solid foods, and doesn’t miss an opportunity to make his parents smile. “We call Giovanni our ‘little blessing baby,’” concludes Julie. “We are grateful to the physicians and nurses at Marian for going above and beyond to provide our family with both a safe and exceptional experience.”

Sometimes I would skip social events just to avoid an hour of trauma in the closet trying to figure out what to wear. In all, losing the weight has allowed me to gain confidence. Local Leader in Surgical Weight Loss For the majority of patients who suffer from obesity, it takes more than diet and exercise alone to achieve substantial weight loss and improve health. The Dignity Health Weight Loss Surgery Institute of the Central Coast (WLSICC) is the only comprehensive surgical weight loss program on California’s Central Coast using technology and equipment specifically designed to accommodate complex and morbidly obese patients. The Dignity Health WLSICC conducts more than 200 surgeries annually. For demonstrating the highest standards of quality and safety, the program has earned designation as a MBSAQIP Comprehensive Accredited Center by the American College of Surgeons and the American Society for Metabolic and Bariatric Surgery. The Dignity Health WLSICC is also a Blue Cross Blue Shield Blue Distinction Center for proven expertise in delivering specialty care. “Within the past three years, the Dignity Health Weight Loss Surgery Institute of the Central Coast has grown from an idea to a fully accredited program producing equal, if not superior, outcomes when compared with the nation’s largest and most reputable facilities,” states David Maccabee, MD, FACS, WLSICC Medical Director and surgeon. “Although we are proud of the program’s success, it’s the personal stories of patients’ improvement and enjoyment of their lives that continues to inspire our team.”

The Expert Team

Dr. Felix is known throughout the world as an expert laparoscopic surgeon who founded the Center for Bariatric Surgery at Clovis Community Medical Center more than three decades ago. He earned his medical degree from the University of Illinois Medical School in Chicago, joined the National Institute of Health Cancer as a fellow, and completed his surgical residency at University of Illinois. He regularly teaches and participates in expert discussions of bariatric surgery at national and international meetings. As the Medical Director of the Dignity Health WLSICC, Dr. Maccabee has extensive minimally-invasive and bariatric surgery expertise. Additionally, Dr. Maccabee completed surgical residencies at the University of Washington in Seattle and Oregon Health & Science University (OHSU) in Portland. He completed a fellowship in minimally invasive surgery at OHSU as well. He and Dr. Felix are the only weight loss surgery specialists in San Luis Obispo County and northern Santa Barbara County. These world-class surgeons will soon be joined by Carol McCloskey, MD, an experienced and fellowship-trained bariatric surgeon from the University of Pittsburgh Medical Center with 10 years of experience at this leading hospital. Bariatric Nurse Coordinator Carrie Smith, MSN, RN, PHN, CBN, is the expert nurse who patients connect with daily. The team also includes highly-skilled staff specialized in dietary/ nutritional counseling, long term follow up care, physical rehabilitation, and emotional support. For more information, please call 805.332.THIN

Patients are cared for at the Dignity Health WLSICC by two surgeons: Edward Felix, MD, FACS, and David Maccabee, MD, FACS.

MAKI N G A D I FFEREN CE Spotlight on Marian’s Post-Acute Care Team

Led by David Duke, MD, Case and Utilization Review Physician Advisor, a team of select volunteers spend their days meeting with patients prior to discharge. The program’s volunteers (many of whom are retired social workers and case managers) interview patients prior to discharge to identify any care issues that may arise after they leave the hospital and to ensure continuity of follow up care. Members of the Post-Acute Care Team

When most think of hospital volunteers, they imagine retired, helpful individuals in matching uniforms who spend their days escorting community members around the medical center. At Marian Regional Medical Center, our volunteers are indeed helpful, however the volunteer force is anything but average. In addition to giving selflessly and generously of their time, Marian volunteers encompass a world of detailed skill, impeccable talent, and great intellect. Recognizing the diverse skills and abilities of our volunteers, Marian established the volunteer Post-Acute Care Team to address and resolve transition of care issues for patients being discharged home.

JEAN MACKENZIE

Dr. Duke explains, “Whether it is assisting a patient by scheduling a follow up primary care physician visit, providing elder care resources, or arranging transportation home through a taxi voucher, this dedicated team helps patients in a variety of ways to ensure a seamless transition from the medical center to home. Although originally thought to be impossible, this innovative program has become a model for the industry.” The Post-Acute Care Team program developed at Marian has been adopted by numerous facilities throughout the Dignity Health system and is also offered at Arroyo Grande Community Hospital.

Honoring one of Marian’s longest serving volunteers When Jean Mackenzie roams the halls of Marian Regional Medical Center her heartfelt smile is known by all. This is because Jean is one of Marian’s longest serving volunteers, donating a total of 22,367 hours over the past 23 years. “Throughout all these years, I never hesitated to get up in the morning to volunteer at Marian,” confides Jean. “I have honestly loved my time at the hospital and it’s been a bittersweet departure.” Upon her retirement, Marian would like to extend sincere appreciation to Jean for her remarkable donation of volunteer service to the medical center and community. To discover how you can make a difference as a volunteer, please call Volunteer Services at 805.739.3520.

PLAN N ED G IVI N G MAD E SI M PLE Courtesy estate planning service available to friends of Marian

A planned gift is arguably the most significant charitable donation one can make in their lifetime. Planned giving provides donors with an ideal platform for leaving not only an exceptionally personal legacy, but also one of great meaning. Planned gifts uniquely allow an individual to decide what they want their legacy to be, how the gift is made, and who is trusted to carry it out. Since the success of Marian Regional Medical Center depends on generous philanthropic gifts from community members, the Marian Foundation is pleased to offer complimentary estate planning services to friends of Marian. Through a courtesy consultation, community members will receive a legal and financial estate planning summary. Estate planning services are provided in a confidential, no-obligation manner and are available to Marian donors to use as a resource tool with one’s professional advisor.

24

Legacy Society An invitation to join the Marian Legacy Society is extended to all who have or would like to make a provision for Marian through a planned gift such as a bequest, a charitable trust, life income agreements, life insurance policies, or interests in real property. The Marian Legacy Society is an association of Marian friends and benefactors who share the same ideals as Marian’s founding Sisters of St. Francis and we invite others to become partners in continuing this extraordinary heritage of exceptional medicine—for today and tomorrow. If you are interested in making a planned gift, the Marian Foundation’s knowledgeable team is committed to taking the time to assist you. For more information, please call the Marian Foundation at 805.739.3595.

H O N O RI N G O N E O F MARIAN’S M OST BELOVED BEN EFACTO RS: ROSALI E M I N ETTI Rosalie Minetti was a woman driven by her faith, love of family, and generous heart. Rosalie, along with her husband Clarence, truly embodied the Santa Maria Valley’s spirit of giving through meaningful gifts of their leadership, time, and Clarence and Rosalie Minetti resources. Always leading by example, the Minettis cultivated an inspirational family tradition of giving and Marian Regional Medical Center is honored to be just one of countless organizations to receive their boundless support. Clarence and Rosalie’s support of the Marian Foundation is legendary. In fact, when it came time to plan the Marian Foundation’s inaugural VIP Waiters Night, as owners of the renowned Far Western Tavern, they graciously offered their restaurant and ranch as the original site for the annual event. Even though Clarence and Rosalie are no longer with us, their legacy of giving will remain part of Marian as the new hospital’s chapel was named in their honor. Although Clarence passed just months prior to seeing the new hospital open, its chapel became a special place for Rosalie, and still is for the Minetti family, as it serves to provide comfort and solace for those in times of need. Rosalie passed away in April of 2015 at the age of 95. In the midst of her family’s grief, Rosalie’s children designated memorial gifts in their dear mother’s memory to Marian and Mission Hope Cancer Center. The Marian Foundation will forever be grateful to be touched by the Minetti family’s generosity which continues to inspire others, making a profoundly positive impact in the lives of Marian patients and families.

26

FURTHERING THE HEALING POWER Through memorial and tribute gifts, community members have the unique opportunity to honor a loved one or celebrate a special occasion. In times of sorrow, a gift in memoriam provides the opportunity to honor the passing of a family member or friend. In times of joy, a gift in celebration commemorates special milestones such as a new life, restored health, a birthday, a wedding, or an anniversary. Your tax deductible gift will be promptly acknowledged to those you designate, and the gift amount is never disclosed. To make a memorial or tribute gift, please contact the Marian Foundation at 805.739.3595.

While much of Marian Regional Medical Center’s campus was uprooted to make way for the new hospital, construction crews made an exception for the towering redwood tree which has become the centerpiece of the new Ferini Ardantz Healing Garden and Courtyard. As the story goes, the tree was planted in 1967 during the time of the opening of Marian Hospital in honor of the working Sisters of St. Francis.
