FRONTIER ACE DONATES $5,000 TO FOOD BANK
A.D.O.B.E. NEWS GLENNWALP A.D.O.B.E PRESIDENT
GREETINGS TO ALL ADOBE MEMBERS AND FRIENDS From an early age as I watched the seconds of a dying year breathe their last, I pondered what event or events in the emerging New Year would claim the headlines as the major event for that year. Perhaps a flood that would take in its raging path human life and untold destruction, perchance a treaty that would bring worldwide peace, or possibly the discovery of a cure for one of man’s most deadly diseases. All guesses, assumptions, wonderment, wishes and dreams. I did the same for 2020, as I turned my easy chair to my somewhat sleepy wife, and said, I wonder what…?; just like I did at the end of 2019, 2018, 2017, and the closing of many years before that, back into my youth. Can I say 2020 feels different then all the rest? Can I say 2020 – for better or worst - thus far has turned my world a bit upside down? We all know the issues 2020 has brought - thus far. We also know, in my opinion, for those so inclined, the mandates our Creator has given to us as we deal with these issues. As we face and address all these matters, may we be mindful of our blessing to be living in the United States of America, and with specificity, Gold Canyon, Arizona. What a blessing to be able to fellowship with one another in peace and stability as we work together in love, tackling head-on the 2020 issues we now face or will face with devotion and understanding - our rock. And within that process ensuring that bodies are protected and healed, that all voices are heard, that among all the clamor one word stands out and binds us all together – love. Love I suggest produces truth, and truth is love.

Myra Garcia, Executive Director of the Superstition Community Food Bank, accepts donation for $5,000 from Frontier Ace Hardware in Apache Junction. “Frontier Ace has been a true friend to the food bank for many years,” says Garcia. “They have donated both funds and many volunteer hours to food bank events. We’re so grateful for their community support and give-back spirit. That’s what helps keep us such a vital resource in providing emergency food relief for families in our area. We depend on the generosity of businesses, individuals, service clubs and community organizations for the vast majority of our funding.”

Richard Ochs, Public Information Officer (480) 982-4440 X162 Rick.Ochs@sfmd.az.gov The end of the Wildfire Season is nearing, but it’s not over yet! The Superstition Fire & Medical District wants to remind residents of this annual danger, and encourage everyone to assure their home is protected. Firefighters are seeing more wildfires this year, including at lower elevations like the Apache Junction area. And, an increased number of wildfires are expected to occur in our local area for at least the next two years. Homes and structures that are most at risk are those adjacent to open desert areas, and vegetation tracks that run between homes and neighborhoods. It is very important for homeowners to assure an adequate clearing around their home which will create a “Defensible Space”, or lair of protection against wildfires. Creating a defensible space can prevent a wildfire from extending into a home, and provide firefighters with a better change of saving a home.

A Surprising Shift to the ‘Burbs May Be on the Rise BY DIANNE COLSON JD THOMAS POPA & ASSOCIATES
Residents should adhere to the following practices to protect their home from a wildfire. • Remove all weeds and dead ground cover that is within 30 feet of the home. • Trim shrubs and trees that are that are closer than 10 feet from the home. • Cut tree limbs that are less than 5 feet in height and clear all ground vegetation from under trees to prevent fire spread. • Store away furniture cushions, mats, potted plants and other decorations from decks, porches and patios. • Remove anything stored underneath decks or porches that could burn. • Move any flammable material at least 30 feet away from the home. • Clean roofs and gutters of dead leaves and debris that could catch fire from embers. It is known that the majority of Wildfires are human caused and the Fire District encourages everyone to be particularly safe this season. Do not burn weeds or utilize any type of open flame in the outdoors. If you are utilizing an outdoor grill for cooking, exercise the upmost safety and be certain that the grill is positioned in an area free of weeds or other vegetation.
While many people across the U.S. have traditionally enjoyed the perks of an urban lifestyle, some who live in more populated city limits today are beginning to rethink their current neighborhoods. Being in close proximity to everything from the grocery store to local entertainment is definitely a perk, especially if you can also walk to some of these hot spots and have a short commute to work. The trade-off, however, is that highly populated cities can lack access to open space, a yard, and other desirable features. When it comes to social distancing, as we’ve experienced recently, the newest trend seems to be around re-evaluating a once-desired city lifestyle and trading it for suburban or rural living. The Harris Poll recently surveyed 2,000 Americans, and 39% of the respondents who live in urban areas indicated the COVID-19 crisis has caused them to consider moving to a less populated area. Today, moving outside the city limits is also more feasible than ever, especially as Americans have quickly become more accustomed to – and more accepting of – remote work. We may very well see an increasing number of buyers looking for a property in our area. And, for those of you reading this article who are thinking about buying and don’t mind a commute to work for the well-being of your family, you may want to consider looking at homes for sale in this area. We are perfectly situated for those looking for that suburban living. The author does not guarantee or warrant the accuracy or completeness of the information or opinions contained herein. UNEMPLOYMENT REPORT: No Need to Be Terrified
BY DIANNE COLSON JD THOMAS POPA & ASSOCIATES
Many analysts have been predicting that the unemployment rate could be greater than 20%. It turns out the unemployment rate has declined to 13.3% as of the first week of June and is continuing to decline rapidly. There are some small rays of light shining through on this issue. Here are three: 1. The actual number of unemployed is less than many are reporting The number of people unemployed is sometimes overexaggerated. It seems that every newscaster talks about 40+ million people unemployed. It is true that over the ten weeks since the virus hit, over 40.7 million people have applied for unemployment. It is also true, however, that many of those people have already returned to work or obtained a new job. The actual number of people unemployed as of the beginning of June is 21.1 million. This is still a horrible number, but about half of what is often being reported. 2. Of those still unemployed, most are temporary layoffs May’s unemployment report showed that 90% of those unemployed believed their status was temporary. A survey by the Federal Reserve Bank showed that employers believe over 75% of job losses are temporary layoffs and furloughs. This means 3 out of 4 people should be returning to work as the economy continues to recover. 3. Those on unemployment are receiving assistance According to a study from the Becker Friedman Institute for Economics at the University of Chicago, 68% of those who are eligible for unemployment insurance receive benefits that exceed lost earnings, with 20% receiving benefits at least twice as large as their lost earnings. Bottom Line The nation continues to reopen, many of those families who are impacted will be able to return to work. As predicted by 3 of the major financial institutions, we will see a positive recovery starting in the 3rd quarter and continuing upward in the 4th quarter, looking at total recovery much sooner than most expected. Financial Focus MATTRUPPERT
Throughout much of your working life, you contribute to your 401(k), IRA and other investment accounts to help ensure a comfortable retirement. However, once you do retire, you’ll need to shift your focus somewhat from building these investments to using them – in other words, you’ll have to start withdrawing from your portfolio to meet the costs of living. How can you be sure you’re not taking out so much that you risk outliving your resources? First of all, you need to establish a proper withdrawal rate – the percentage of your portfolio’s value needed for one year’s worth of retirement expenses. Ideally, if you were to stick with this rate, your portfolio would last as long as you do. Your withdrawal rate should be based on a number of factors, including your age, amount of assets, portfolio mix and retirement lifestyle. A financial professional can help you determine the rate that’s right for you, but it's important to understand that this rate is a starting point since you will want to review your withdrawals each year to ensure they are still appropriate.
MANAGING WITHDRAWALS CAREFULLY CAN PROTECT RETIREMENT INCOME If the financial markets performed smoothly and predictably, year in and year out, any adjustments you make would likely be more modest. But, as you know, and as we’ve all been reminded the last several months, the markets are neither smooth nor predictable. Rather than constantly trying to change your withdrawal rate and spending in response to movements in the markets – which may be challenging if you have grown accustomed to a certain standard of living – you might be better off adopting a more conservative rate at the beginning of your retirement. For example, if you are in your mid-60s, you could start at a withdrawal rate of about 4%, which also assumes an increase in withdrawals (a "raise") of approximately 3% each year to incorporate inflation. By starting at a more modest withdrawal rate, you would have some flexibility for those years in which the market drops significantly. And you could increase your chances of extending the lifetime of your portfolio. But even if you started out with a conservative rate, you may need to review it during periods of extreme market movements. If, for instance, your portfolio were to fall 20% in one year, the 4% you had planned to withdraw would actually become 5% because you’re taking out the amount you had planned, but now it's from a smaller pool of money. If this happens, should you consider making an adjustment? There’s no easy answer. The amount you withdraw from your portfolio has a major impact on how long your money lasts. You'll improve your likelihood of success if you are able to be flexible and make some spending adjustments – spending less on some of your discretionary items, for example, or not taking a "raise" until your portfolio recovers. Importantly, your financial advisor can help run different scenarios to determine if adjustments need to be made to ensure you remain on track In any case, think carefully about your withdrawal rate. By managing it carefully, and reviewing it over time, you can take greater control over your retirement income. A Quail’s Tale
BY MARCIA NELSON
Have you ever noticed
Now they dutifully march
Now don’t you just wonder
how a parent Quail
to the lookout’s soulful call
how unlike the humankind,
takes his whole big family
as he perches high above
they get their families to comply?
down the rocky trail?
on a branch or on a wall.
They seem of like mind.
First, he lines them up
If perchance he may sense
So maybe this quail
all safely in a row,
that danger may arise
has a lesson to share.
bigger ones go first
the whole obedient covey
Families may not always agree
then little ones in tow.
will take to the skies.
but they can always show they care.
GOLD CANYON RESIDENT TO LEAD FOOD BANK Superstition Community Food Bank (SCFC), formerly the Apache Junction Food Bank, has announced the election of Gold Canyon resident Phil Tremonti to a 3-year term as board president. Tremonti has had a long affiliation with the food bank as both a board member and consultant. He brings fifty years of experience in business revitalization, accounting and finance to his new position. He replaces Robert Mohle who has completed his term as president but will continue to serve on the board. “I’m looking forward to continuing Bob’s strong leadership and proactive vision,” says Tremonti. “He set the tone for operational excellence and strategic funding initiatives which we will continue to build on.” SCFB has also announced that Jim Walker, a resident of Queen Valley, will serve as board vice-president, and that Shaunna Cooper-Smith will be the board secretary. The position of board treasurer is currently open. Three new members have been named to the board: Randy Beringer, Lynn Hanson, and Patricia Palermini will be bringing their extensive business backgrounds to directing the future of the food bank. Tremonti adds, “We are actively recruiting new board members with skill sets in the areas of accounting/finance, education, PR/ marketing, social media, and fundraising. I urge anyone with these skills to give us a call and join what is now the largest and most acclaimed food bank in the East Valley. It’s a few hours of very rewarding time devoted to helping make life a little easier for the most vulnerable in our community.” The Superstition Community Food Bank is located in Apache Junction at Superstition Boulevard and Idaho Road. SUPERSTITION FIRE REMIND CITIZENS TO
Prepare for Monsoons
Monsoon season officially starts on June 15, but powerful and dangerous storms can develop at any time. Some areas within the city and surrounding areas are prone to flooding, including washes, streets and neighborhoods that are located in low lying areas.
“For us it is not tornados, it is flash flooding and straight-line winds,” said Shane Kiesow, public works manager for the city of Apache Junction. “During this dry time of year, before the monsoon arrives, it is an opportunity for everyone to ensure all drainage areas through our properties are clear of debris and things are secure against wind. Even the smallest debris, especially loose debris or dead vegetation, can clog downstream culverts and cause more severe flooding than what would have occurred. When the rains do come, many of our roads are rural in character and have very limited to no lighting making water crossings a challenge to see at night. Please slow down, be vigilant and do not cross flooded washes.” Rick Ochs, public information officer of the Superstition Fire and Medical District, added, “Driving through flooded washes not only places our citizens at risk, but also the first responders who may be called to perform a water rescue. These types of rescues are very dangerous to everyone involved due to the fast moving water and unknown hazards which lay beneath. Our crews are highly trained and very capable to perform water rescues, but avoiding the dangers of swift moving water and not becoming a victim is the best way for citizens to assure their own safety.”
More deaths occur each year due to flooding than from any other storm-related hazard because people simply underestimate the power of water. It is also important to know that washes can continue to run heavily for extended periods of time after rain has subsided due to run-off from the mountains. The city of Apache Junction will alert the community of road closures during the monsoon season. Some tips to remember are: AVOID ALL WATER CROSSINGS • Flash floods start and end very quickly. • Never drive through flooded roadways. Do not drive around barricades, which is illegal and dangerous. • Six inches of water will reach the bottom of most passenger cars causing loss of control and stalling. • Moving water one to two feet deep will carry away most vehicles. Be especially cautious at night when road flooding and water crossings are especially difficult to see. In the event of heavy rains and potential flooding, the city of Apache Junction and the SFMD continue to provide free sandbags to our area residents. Citizens need to bring necessary tools to fill their own bags and arrange pickup and delivery. Tips & Hints ON LANDSCAPING
SUNBURNT DESERT PLANTS
TOMMCDONALD OWNER - SMILING DOG LANDSCAPES
You might think that our desert plants can take whatever sunlight Ma Nature would throw at them, but I have learned the hard way that is not so. Even Cacti can sunburn, as will almost any plant if conditions are right. Let us start with cactus. Cacti have several strategies to protect themselves from damaging solar radiation. Their “skin” is protected by a thick, waxy coating that helps preserve moisture and prevent sun damage. Thorns provide shading and cooling as well as preventing predation by animals. Cacti are also able to “harden” their south side, the side that takes the worst beating from sunlight. They do this over several years as they acclimate to their location. Therefore, most reputable nurseries mark the south side of their cactus and succulents and encourage you to plant them with that same orientation. Even some herbaceous desert dwellers can suffer dangerous sunburn. Paloverde trees, with their thin bark will sunburn if over trimmed in the spring or summer. If to sever, this type of damage can be fatal. Sun burn on most plants looks similar, pictured is an agave just starting to burn. The skin or bark starts to take on a lighter pigment, going from green to yellow to brown. You do not want to get to brown as by that point the plant is most likely too damaged to grow out of it. Preventing sun burn on existing plants is simple:
Never, never, never trim trees to hard spring to summer!
• Orient succulents and cacti when planting to their original position when planting. • If it is not possible to know how they were originally orientated cover them with shade cloth (30 to 50% shade) when planting in the spring or summer. This will have to stay on at least till October and may have to be re-installed the following summer.
Once, in desperation I even put spf30 sunblock on a paloverde that I had trimmed to hard, but the results were not that impressive. Save the sunblock for yourself.

Apache Junction Receives $1 Million Federal Grant for Police Officers The city of Apache Junction has been selected to receive a federal grant that will fund the hiring of eight additional police officers. The U.S. Department of Justice grants – announced this week – are part of $400 million in funding being sent to jurisdictions nationwide through the department’s Office of Community Oriented Policing Services COPS Hiring Program. The city of Apache Junction was one of nine Arizona communities to receive grants. “We are thankful to get federal support that directly helps us keep our community safe,” said Apache Junction Mayor Jeff Serdy. “This grant is going to put more officers on the street and make our city an even better place to live, play, go to school and do business in.”
Byers named commander of Arizona Military Order of the Purple Heart Submitted by Nancy Fassbender Pinal County Veterans Memorial Foundation
The Justice Department grants were awarded to 596 law enforcement agencies across the country, which will lead to the hire of 2,732 additional officers. The city applied for the grant on March 1.
On May 30, 2020, the Arizona Military Order of the Purple Heart had their virtual convention. Charles G. Byers, Jr. (aka Chuck) was nominated to be the Arizona State Commander to represent all the Purple Heart Chapters.
“It also always gratifying to get an endorsement on our efforts to keep the community safe so we are very glad to have earned this grant from the Department of Justice,” said Apache Junction Police Chief Thomas E. Kelly. “We also like to thank our City Council and management in supporting us in pursuing these grants, showing their confidence in our continued pursuit of community programs.”
Chuck is a Purple Heart recipient from the Vietnam War. He was a medic and served as a combat medic in Vietnam from July 1967 to June 1968. He was with the 9th Infantry division 2/60th stationed in the Mekong Delta. Unfortunately, while attending to a wounded soldier, he was wounded on June 1, 1968 and spent 6 months as a patient in Brooke Army Hospital in San Antonio, Texas. After recovering, he stayed in the service and entered the Walter Reed Army Nursing program, graduated in 1970. While working in Walter Reed Army Hospital he spent 6 months on the Presidential ward. In 1972 he was discharged from the service and was awarded Silver Star, Bronze Star w/ Valor, and the Purple Heart.
The “COPS” program is a competitive award program created to reduce crime and advance public safety through community policing by proving direct funding for the hiring of career law enforcement offices, the department said. The hiring program also provides funding to state, local and tribal law enforcement to enhance local community policing strategies and tactics. In its announcement, the Justice Department said funding through the program had been on hold since 2018 due to a nationwide injunction that was lifted earlier this year. “The Department of Justice is committed to providing the police chiefs and sheriffs of our great nation with needed resources, tools, and support. The funding announced today will bolster their ranks and contribute to expanding community policing efforts nationwide,” U.S. Attorney General William P. Barr said in the announcement on June 2. “A law enforcement agency’s most valuable assets are the men and women who put their lives on the line every day in the name of protecting and serving their communities.” To learn more about the Justice Department programs, please visit https:// www.cops.usdoj.gov. Also receiving grants in Arizona were the Pima County and Coconino County Sheriff's Offices, and police departments in Camp Verde, Maricopa, Nogales, Peoria, Sahuarita and Winslow.

4TH OF JULY
FIREWORKS CELEBRATION Celebrate the Fourth of July this year, from your backyard, your business, or live stream with us on social media. Due to COVID19 restrictions on events and gatherings, our celebration will look a little different this year. In consultation with the Apache Junction Police Department and Superstition Fire and Medical District, we are very fortunate to be able to continue our annual fireworks display to celebrate our Independence Day on Saturday, July 4th at 8:30pm. We plan to have a show that is vertical, with no ground displays and can be viewed throughout most of the community. The fireworks show is sponsored by our longtime partner, Republic Services. They have been a strong supporter for 11 years.
In addition to fireworks, AJ Parks & Recreation will be offering residents Rec Packs that will be available for pick-up at the AJ Multi-Gen Center on Thursday & Friday, July 2nd and 3rd. The packs (one per family) will be filled with fun 4th of July activities and games, and are free to the first 100 families. In addition we will celebrate Independence Day with various entertaining posts, videos, and things to do via social media sites. As usual, the fireworks show will be contingent on weather and fire safety in the nearby area. We encourage everyone to view from home with family and friends. Residents may contact our office the week of the event to find a list of limited viewing locations near Superstition Shadows Park where they can view from their vehicle, drivein style (email us at ajpr@ajcity.net or call 480-983-2181).

Real Estate For You LORIBLANK BROKER/OWNER LORI BLANK & ASSOCIATES, LLC
What Does It Mean To Have A Cash Buyer? Is A Cash Buyer Desirable? There are many benefits to having a cash buyer. For one, the deal will not fall apart for lack of financing because cash buyers do not need financing. As long as your real estate agent verifies the legitimate ability of a cash buyer to purchase your home, a cash buyer is very desirable. What Does The Real Estate Agent Do With Cash Buyers? Cash buyers should submit their financial records to your real estate agent so your agent can confirm that they have the money available to pay without financing. Proof of funds might be a recent bank statement, financial records from stock holdings or something similar.
Every now and then when a person is selling their home, a cash buyer comes into the equation. If you have listed your home for sale and your real estate agent has informed you that a cash buyer is interested, you will want to understand how this affects the potential sale. What Is A Cash Buyer? A cash buyer is a buyer who will not be applying for a loan to buy your house. They already have the financial resources available to make the purchase without external loans. Cash buyers do not necessarily have the whole amount in cash sitting in their savings accounts, though. They may have the money tied up in a retirement account, stocks, bonds or other commodities.

If a cash buyer refuses to submit proof of funds available, then you and your agent should assume that they may not be a genuine cash buyer. What Are The Risks With Cash Buyers? Sometimes a buyer comes along who claims to be a cash buyer but is not. Maybe they intend on getting private financing, or they do not want to be bothered with a preapproval. For whatever reason, it is essential for your agent to get proof. Otherwise, a non-cash buyer who pretends to be could derail your sale. For instance, you might have entertained other offers if you had known that person was not really as liquid as they claimed. Your real estate agent will cover your interests if a cash buyer comes along. Just know that if you do have a genuine offer from a cash buyer, your closing will likely be very smooth! Let ’s Learn about Yoga.
The Live it Well Place in Gold Canyon welcomes Dr. Jose Montoya, a licensed medical professional, an RN and a Traditional Chinese Medical Doctor. Yoga and acupuncture both have remarkably similar, long histories that go back thousands of years. Yoga is a practice to develop a heightened sense of self-awareness on a physical, mental and emotional level and Chinese Medicine at its core meets you where you are at, to work with your body to create balance and fluid energy flow. In yoga, 'prana' is the word we use to describe life force, or more simply put: energy. In the modern practice of yoga, we use movement, breathing and meditation to move energy in a direction that nourishes us. Sometimes this looks like an intense dynamic practice, and other times it looks like a long nap on the floor. Qi is the Chinese medicine version of this same concept. Looking at the full picture of who you are and what you're navigating, Chinese Medicine doctors are able to locate areas of excess or deficiency in the body. By using various tools along sections of the body called meridian lines, acupuncturists can move or nourish the qi and send it where it needs to be. Integrative Health options assist in keeping the immune system strong and healthy. Assessing your health, medical history and why you’ve come in, Jose and his staff will determine a treatment plan, which may include mindful movement, massage (offered by Live it Well and Az Massage Therapy) as well as utilizing the tools of Chinese Medicine. Acupuncture - Acupuncture has been around for thousands of years and has been helping people from all walks of life, with all types of conditions. Nutrition - Oriental Medicine places a great emphasis on diet and nutrition. The Chinese Balanced Diet considers individuality and the “you are what you eat” mentality.
Chinese Herbal Medicine - Chinese medicine is a complete medical system which treats a full range of conditions, from external to internal, chronic to acute and all things in between. Traditional Chinese Medicine - Chinese medicine is a complete medical system which treats a full range of conditions, from external to internal, chronic to acute and all things in between.
Jose currently treats many patients who suffer from chronic and acute pain. In addition, he has experience assisting patients with compromised immunity, stress and anxiety, fatigue, infertility, digestive disorders, and various symptomologies of autoimmune and detoxification. The Pinal County Veterans Memorial Foundation
MEMORIAL FOR FALLEN SOLDIERS
The Pinal County Veterans Memorial Foundation is building a Memorial in Pinal County to honor all the Fallen Soldiers who were from Pinal County. The foundation is building this memorial to honor not only the Fallen Soldiers but for all Veterans who fought to keep this Country free. In 2010, Frank Reyes, Army Veteran as well as a former Pinal County Sheriff for 24 years, found that Pinal County did not have one place to honor all service members who fought and died defending our Country. His vision was that a Memorial be built so that Veterans and families could come and not only seek solace but to educate the children that freedom is not free! The Memorial will hold on the walls all the names of the fallen soldiers who died in battle. The plans will have a park like setting with the Memorial Wall, a Kiosk as well as picnic tables and sidewalks honoring all Veterans who have served. In November 2019, PCVMF broke ground for this Memorial at the entrance to the Paul Mason Sportsplex in Casa Grande, AZ. The plans are to have the Memorial finished and open to the public by Memorial Day, 2021. The cost of this project is estimated to be close to $350,000. PCVMF has raised over half of that thru fundraisers. We are now soliciting donors and corporate sponsors to help raise the rest. We have 5 different Donation Tiers from $1000 up to $25,000. For more details, please contact us at our email info@pcvmf.org Since 2010, Nancy Fassbender who is on the PCVMF board, has been collecting names of over 250 fallen soldiers and documenting all their information. She has found thru her research that there are stories to be told about these heroes. She wrote a book called “My Fallen Hero” which has many interesting stories of the individual fallen soldiers. She writes about where they grew up, which armed service they enlisted in as well as the battle which they fought in. You will find stories which have interesting facts and a few chuckles. This book also contains many more interesting stories, for instance, what the Monopoly Game was used for in WWII, one of the Japanese Relocation Centers and a few stories of service animals… especially the story about the pigeon named G.I. Joe.! 20 | Superstition Living
Since Corvid 19 virus, our fundraisers have taken a major hit. We are selling pavers to anyone who wishes to place their name or honor their loved ones. These pavers will be placed on the grounds leading up to the Memorial. At the present time, we are selling the pavers for $150.00 each. The book, “My Fallen Hero” is selling for $25. 100% of these proceeds goes directly to the Memorial. Those who are interested, please check out our website… www.pcvmf.org to order. On August 8th, we will have a bowling tournament fundraiser. This will be held at Casa Grande Cotton Bowl, Casa Grande, AZ. The second fundraiser will be a Golf Tournament held at Florence Poston Butte Golf Course, Florence, AZ. Anyone interested in signing up to participate and/or be a sponsor of either these two events, please contact Donna Stadum at 480-332-6916. We would like to invite in attending one of our meetings, they are held the 2nd Saturday of each month at 10am at the VFW 111 East 2nd Street Casa Grande, AZ 85122 Pinal County Veterans Memorial motto: “Their Sacrifice – Our Challenge to Remember”

YOU CAN CONTROL THE STRESS IN YOUR LIFE We’re living in very stressful times, and it’s no secret that stress affects us both mentally and physically. Stress triggers emotions like anger, fear, and sadness. In turn, these emotions trigger old thought patterns: “I’m not safe” or “I won’t have enough” or “I’m not good enough.” These thoughts can then set off physical responses in our bodies that release stress hormones, and that can lead to adrenal and thyroid problems, insomnia, weight gain, and inflammation—the root cause of most disease. We have very little control of the world around us, so what can we do to control the stress we feel in OUR lives? A lot, actually. Here are some suggestions. *Observe your emotions. When you feel a strong emotion rising—anger or fear, for instance—step outside your mind for a moment and try to act as an impartial observer. What specific thing triggered this? Was it a news report? A Facebook post? A conversation? Recognizing triggers is a big first step. Allow yourself to feel the emotion, but don’t identify with it (“this is who I am”). *Shine a light—without judgment. Allow your thoughts to come into the light so they can be acknowledged. Don’t judge yourself for the thoughts (“I shouldn’t think such things”); the thoughts aren’t who you are, they’re just thoughts. Once they surface, they can be released—along with the negative emotions attached to them. *Own your feelings. “He makes me so angry!” Remember that no one can make you feel anything. You choose how you react to others based on whether or not they meet your expectations. If you take responsibility for your feelings, you can control them and you become empowered. *Minimize triggers. If the evening news or your Facebook feed makes your blood boil or want to hide under your bed, minimize the time you spend with them. You can be informed without being immersed. *Honor yourself with healthy practices. Meditate, breathe deeply, go for a walk in nature, hang out with the animals at the zoo, laugh. Minimizing the stress in your life will maximize your health! 22 | Superstition Living

UPGRADE YOUR HOME, DOWNGRADE ENERGY USAGE 7 EFFICIENT HOME IMPROVEMENT PROJECTS
(Family Features) The best home upgrades not only make spaces more livable and energy-efficient but are also costeffective. Making energy-efficient improvements is a savvy way to save money on utility bills, curb energy usage and add to the house’s value. Consider a variety of home improvement projects, both big and small, that can reduce the financial burden of maintaining your home throughout the year and improve energy efficiency. ADD INSULATION A cost-effective way to save on heating and cooling bills is adding a layer of insulation in the attic where heat loss is typically greatest due to hot air rising. While many newer homes are adequately insulated, those that are several decades old (or older) may benefit from an upgrade in not only the attic but other common problem areas where air can escape such as basements, crawl spaces, fireplaces and ductwork. SEAL DOORS AND WINDOWS Windows and doors are common culprits for energy loss. While a complete replacement of doors and windows can be pricey, adding exterior caulk and weather stripping to fill in gaps where air can escape around these openings can make a noticeable difference for a fraction of the cost and make it cheaper to heat and cool your home.
INSTALL SKYLIGHTS Skylights are a cost-effective option for transforming any room in the home with natural light while also delivering energysaving benefits. For example, Sun Tunnel Skylights from Velux can be installed in as little as 90 minutes and funnel natural light from the roof through the attic and into the room below with an aesthetic that resembles recessed lighting. Customizable with six diffuser film styles to complement interior design, the skylights can make a home more energy-efficient by reducing reliance on artificial lighting. An optional daylight controller makes it easy for homeowners to adjust natural light entering a room, and a solar nightlight provides a moon-like guiding light at
night. Installed with the solar nightlight, the skylights qualify for a 26% federal tax credit on solar property. ADD REFLECTIVE WINDOW FILM When the sun shines through windows, it can heat up the home’s interior quickly and trigger the air conditioner to turn on. Window coverings, such as blackout curtains, can help, but adding low-e reflective window film to your windowpanes, particularly southern-facing ones, can provide an additional shield from the sun’s hot rays and reduce energy costs. INSTALL A PROGRAMMABLE THERMOSTAT A programmable thermostat is an efficient way to control the climate inside your home, and those with smart technology take programming to a whole new level. Today’s smart thermostats not only let homeowners control temperatures from their smart devices while on-the-go but can also learn daily habits and adjust the temperature accordingly with no other manual adjustments necessary. In addition, some utility companies offer incentives like money back at the end of the year for installing a smart thermostat because the energy savings are so substantial. REPLACE APPLIANCES Because appliances like refrigerators and ovens, among others, are major energy users, investing in more efficient models provides both cost and energy savings. Additionally, homes more than 15 years old could benefit from updates to the air conditioner or heater as systems 15-20 years old or older may be candidates for replacement as they’re inefficient by today’s standards. ADD CEILING FANS In comparison to running your air conditioner consistently, the cost of running a ceiling fan (or several) is significantly less. Particularly on days that may not require cooling the entire house completely, fans can provide a gentle breeze and circulate air in the spaces you use most often. Simply adjust the switch to the counterclockwise position to ensure it’s pushing air downward during warmer months.
