GREETINGS TO ALL ADOBE MEMBERS AND FRIENDS The ADOBE Board has voted to cancel all spring 2021, Membership Meetings. It was a difficult decision but the finding was made in the best interest of all members and friends. Hopefully the vaccines will do their part in bringing this dreaded virus to an end and we will be ready to go with Membership Meetings in October, 2021. In the meantime be safe. In spite of the Membership Meeting cancellations, ADOBE Committees will continue to meet. One of the most important Committee Meetings is the Roads Committee, with emphasis upon the Gold Canyon Bypass. ADOBE refuses to give-up on this effort and ADOBE will continue their fervent pursuit of this much needed endeavor. Meetings are being setup for early January, 2021, with relevant Pinal County officials to address this matter. Added to the Roads Committee are Gold Canyon residents Ron Vibbert and Pat Butler- welcome aboard Ron and Pat. The Gold Canyon Community Church will finalize their purchase of the former Gold Canyon Elementary School effective year-end 2020. Thus the ADOBE Board will be contacting Pinal County officials about taking over Dinosaur Park as a County Park consistent with ADOBE’s Agreement with the County. All members should have received information through the mail about the 2020-2021 ADOBE Membership Drive. The ADOBE Board and its membership greatly appreciate your support as ADOBE continues to be the “Voice of Gold Canyon” on issues that affect every one of us. If you have any matter that you feel needs to be addressed please call any one of the Board Members, or email us at adobegoldcanyon.com. Your comments, thoughts and perspectives are always welcome. As we begin 2021, the ADOBE Board wishes each of you a most happy, prosperous, and healthy new year. Let’s leave 2020 in the dust and move forward with a renewed passion for life, liberty and the pursuit of happiness. Glenn A. Walp ADOBE – “The Voice of Gold Canyon since 1988”

Nancy Fassbender

2020 Inductee to the Arizona Veterans Hall of Fame Nancy Fassbender of Gold Canyon is one of 23 fellow veterans who have been chosen for the 2020 Arizona Veterans Hall of Fame. The Unified Arizona Veterans organization annually selects outstanding state veterans who have made significant personal contributions to their community, state or nation. These clearly exceptional veterans are then submitted for the Governor’s approval for induction into the Hall of Fame. Since 2010, Nancy has been a board member of the Pinal County Veterans Memorial Foundation. She is the research/ historian and planned several fundraising events for the foundation. During her research of the Pinal County fallen soldiers, she found that there were individual stories to tell. She wrote a book called “My Fallen Hero”. This book not only has stories of the fallen heroes, but also interesting facts and stories. All the proceeds of her book go to the Memorial. She has been involved with her community and veteran organizations thru out the valley. She has planned many events to thank Veterans for their service. One major event has been with the 50th Vietnam War Commemoration out of Washington DC. We are trying to reach as many Vietnam Veterans who we can to thank them personally and give them the designated bronze pin that has been issued by the Dept of Defense. Nancy also is an active member of the Apache Junction Chamber of Commerce. Since this Corvid has hit our community, we have not been able to plan events as we normally have done. All my Veterans events have been shut down. It is so disappointing to me as I want to be out among my heroes and thank every one of them.

WHAT YOUR NEIGHBORS ARE SAYING

If you are looking to buy or sell a house in the Valley, give Christan a call. She will do everything she can by sharing her knowledge of properties for sale, the communities they are in, provide great service and expertise. We believe you’ll find it impossible not to have FUN while working with her and may have a feeling of letdown at closing as you will miss seeing her.

We first met Christan at an open house and instantly felt a bond with her and chose her as our realtor. From start to finish she was the best! Very professional, caring, and her eye for detail was above and beyond. She has a great personality too. We highly recommend her!

Virtual Winter Lecture Series at Apache Junction Public Library The educational and entertaining Winter Lecture Series returns to Apache Junction Public Library. A community favorite, the lectures explore topics of local and national interest. Programs include the impact of boarding schools on the language, culture, lifestyle, and traditions of American Indian people; the beautiful significance of everyday Southwest symbols; a spirited discussion of the mescal agave plant – tequila is just one of its uses; and, to commemorate Rep. John Lewis’ birthday, a discussion on our right to peaceful assembly. New this year, the lectures are online exclusively and registration is required. The six-session series begins on Tuesday, January 12 at 2:30 p.m. A complete schedule and instructions to register for the programs can be found at ajpl.org, or contact the library at 480-474-8555.

Exciting Announcement! Starting on January 10, 2021 the Live it Well Place in Gold Canyon will be having an outdoor, bi-weekly Natural Health Market. Hours for the Market will be from 9am1pm. Hints: How to Run or Walk the Lost Dutchman Virtual Races by Rick Hardina Those planning to run or walk one of the Lost Dutchman Virtual race distances in February may be wondering how they might best prepare for this entirely new concept in race participation. These suggestions will help pave the way for a very successful and truly memorable event. Your first decision will be to select an appropriate Lost Dutchman race distance. The options include 8k (4.8 miles), 10k (6.2 miles), half marathon (13.1 miles), or full marathon (26.2 miles). You may register for a race through February 16 at: www. lostdutchmanmarathon.org. You may run or walk your event anywhere between February 6 & 16, but be sure to register by January 23rd in order to receive your runner kit (race t-shirt, finisher medal and bib number) by February 6th. Your

chosen race must be completed within a 24 hour time period. When participating in a virtual race YOU are the Race Director! You choose the course (taking in to account all safety issues including traffic and pavement/road conditions). You may even choose to run indoors on a tread mill. But somehow you will have to compute the distance that you will be running or walking (some phone apps and GPS watches can help with this). You may want to consider an out and back course, or even a loop course around a running track. But be sure that you are aware of the possibility that on certain dates or at certain times your proposed course might be crowded with other people. Due to Covid 19 concerns be sure to avoid crowded conditions anywhere along your chosen course.

One further important consideration must be hydration and any required energy gels or nutrition. You may need to stash these somewhere along your route. Or friends may be willing to provide help. Always remember that accidents can happen. Be sure friends or relatives know your race time and chosen route, and be sure to carry a phone so that they can be contacted immediately should you ever require aid. With a little pre-race planning your 2021 Lost Dutchman Marathon virtual race will be safe and memorable! Stay safe, stay well and enjoy your virtual race! January 2021 | 11

Tips & Hints ON LANDSCAPING TOMMCDONALD OWNER - SMILING DOG LANDSCAPES

ARGENTINE GIANT

AKA TRICHOCERUS HYBRID (SOMETHING TO LOOK FORWARD TO)

Well, another year behind us and I wanted to start this one off with a bit of beauty and optimism and what better to bring a smile to our collective faces than unexpected, huge (4-6”) brightly colored flowers in the middle of winter? Argentine giant has been extensively hybridized since the 1950’s for the following reasons: • It produces one of the best flowers displays of any cultivated cacti, blooming in waves when the day time temps reach 70 oF. The ones pictured here were blooming December 2018. • Originally mostly white flowers which bloom at night, hybrids today have many colors, and they are really Giants! • They are easy to grow here, their origins in the South American highlands help them tolerate our cold and drought conditions. With all of this going for them, it is surprising that they are not used more in Sonoran Desert landscapes. Perhaps their underuse is related to the great controversy over which Latin name to call them. There are at least 7 distinct nomenclatures assigned to the trichocerus and they are currently in the Echinopsis genus, much to

the chagrin of virtually every cactus collector website that I ran into. You can find these plants at almost any nursery under a variety of common names including, hedgehog (not related to our local native hedgehogs), torch, sea urchin or flying saucer cactus. Very confusing! The species pictured here is Trichocerus gandiflorus hybrid. Some quick growing tips: • Like most desert plants they need to dry out between watering but unlike many other cacti, they need regular, deep water. Two to three weeks of no water can stunt their blooming. • Fertilize lightly once a month using a low nitrogen, high phosphorus product. • Can be grown in pots or ground, position in late afternoon shade during June to August. • Every critter out here will eat the blooms. • They are tolerant of hard frosts. With just a few bucks, a bit of luck and by following the above you, too, can have an exciting horticulture show in your very own yard!

THE BUTTERFLY GARDEN HAD A FACELIFT The Butterfly Garden on South Alameda by the Dinosaur Park had a 2 day clean up in December. The Friends of the Butterfly Garden, Gold Canyon Garden Club and Smiling Dog Landscapes pruned overgrown shrubs and trees and removed Summer killed plants creating a great sunny habitat for all flowering plants. The path into and through the Butterfly Garden is open and airy now allowing the sun to shine on all our plants and a walk through is unobstructed by prickly branches. We are getting ready to plant butterfly, pollinator and bird friendly flowering plants in January. We look forward to using it for gardening demonstrations in the New Year when we have all been vaccinated against COVID 19. Let us know through the GOLD Canyon Garden Club Facebook page if you would like to join us in this project as a Friend of the Butterfly Garden or a member of Gold Canyon Garden Club. We are affiliated with National Garden Clubs, Inc, a nonprofit 501 (c)(3) organization. We have access to programs created on-line during the pandemic. January 6, 2021 Floral Design Mechanics (Basic) will be presented. The following Wednesday, January 13th will be Basic 14 | Superstition Living

Botany and January 20th will be a program on Geraniums. The Greenleaf Newsletter put out by the Arizona Federation of Garden Club offers us information on gardening in the region and interesting topics on line. At our December meeting one of our Master Gardeners gave us highlights on some of the trees, shrubs and flowering plants in our Butterfly Garden. • The Desert Milkweed is loved by butterflies and native bees. It is one of the plants that nourish Monarch butterflies, specifically. • Chuparosa’s tubular flower supports butterflies and hummingbirds. • The beautiful Mountain Laurel has a grape scented flower, but is poisonous to dogs. • The Jojoba produces oil that was first used by O’odham Native Americans to treat sores and wounds. In 1943 the military used the oil as an additive to motor oil, transmission and differential gear oil. It is often used for skin care in today’s cosmetic industry. • The Creosote bush is a hardy desert plant that can reproduce by seed or

clone and live to be 100 years old. The ‘King Clone” creosote is a plant that reproduced through cloning, is 11,000 to 14,000 years old, 67 feet across and is found in Victorville, CA on BLM property. When it rains in the desert the pungent scent is usually from the creosote bushes in your neighborhood. • Valentine emus originated in Australia and love our desert. They bloom in the winter and are loved by hummingbirds. • Arizona yellow bells are native and their tubular flowers attract hummingbirds. • The Ironwood tree is a heavy tree that was used for making statues by Native Americans. It grows slowly and can live to be 200 years old. It has a beautiful purple flower in the Spring. • The Palo Verde tree has beautiful green bark but is a real stinker if you burn the wood. Please don’t. We have lots of information and practical knowledge about growing plants in Arizona. Contact us on our Facebook page, Gold Canyon Garden Club and we will contact you. Happy New Year!!

Financial Focus MATTRUPPERT Many of us probably felt that 2020 lasted a very long time. But now that 2021 is upon us, we can make a fresh start – and one way to do that is to make some New Year’s resolutions. Of course, you can make these resolutions for all parts of your life – physical, emotional, intellectual – but have you ever considered some financial resolutions? Here are a few such resolutions to consider: • Don’t overreact to events. When the coronavirus pandemic hit in midFebruary, the financial markets took a big hit. Many people, convinced that we were in for a prolonged slump, decided to take a “time out” and headed to the investment sidelines. But it didn’t take long for the markets to rally, rewarding those patient investors who stayed the course. Nothing is a certainty in the investment world, but the events of 2020 followed a familiar historical pattern: major crisis followed by market drop followed by strong recovery. The lesson for investors? Don’t overreact to today’s news – because tomorrow may look quite different. • Be prepared. At the beginning of 2020, nobody was anticipating a worldwide pandemic and its terrible consequences, both to individuals’ health and to their

TIME FOR NEW YEAR’S FINANCIAL RESOLUTIONS

economic well-being. None of us can foretell the future, either, but we can be prepared, and one way to do so is by building an emergency fund. Ideally, such a fund should be kept in liquid, low-risk vehicles and contain at least six months’ worth of living expenses. • Focus on moves you can control. In response to pandemic-related economic pressures, some employers cut their matching contributions to 401(k) plans in 2020. Will some future event cause another such reduction? No one knows – and even if it happens, there’s probably nothing you can do about it. Instead of worrying about things you can’t control, focus on those you can. When it comes to your 401(k) or similar employersponsored retirement plan, put in as much as you can afford this year, and if your salary goes up, increase your contribution. • Recognize your ability to build savings. During the pandemic, the personal savings rate shot up, hitting a record of 33% in April, according to the U.S. Bureau of Economy Analysis. It fell over the next several months, but still remained about twice as high as the rate of the past few years. Of course, much of this surge in Americans’ proclivity to save

money was due to our lack of options for spending it, as the coronavirus caused either complete or partial shutdowns in physical retail establishments, as well as dining and entertainment venues. But if you did manage to boost your own personal savings when your spending was constrained, is it possible to remain a good saver when restrictions are lifted? Probably. And the greater your savings, the greater your financial freedoms – including the freedom to invest and freedom from excessive debt. When we reach a post-pandemic world, see if you can continue saving more than you did in previous years – and use your savings wisely. These aren’t the only financial resolutions you can make – but following them may help you develop habits that could benefit you in 2021 and beyond. Healing Naturally DR. TINAMARCANTEL BLOOMM STUDIOS Dr. Tina Marcantel, Naturopathic Doctor 480-738-1647 | DrMarcantel.com 6804 S. Kings Ranch Rd., Gold Canyon

A foundational principle of naturopathic medicine is to find and treat the root causes of an illness; to identify and remove the underlying causes of illness rather than to merely eliminate or suppress symptoms.  I am, of course, grateful for the many medications we have at our disposal to help suppress patients’ symptoms when necessary. On the other hand, in my medical career as a registered nurse and naturopathic doctor I’ve also seen the down side of simply treating (or band-aiding) symptoms— particularly when dealing with chronic health problems. Medications that suppress symptoms often need to be increased over time to maintain their effectiveness. This may also lead to added medications that are necessary to counteract side effects from the original drugs. The results may be more and more medications with less and less effectiveness in helping the patient stay healthy.

GETTING TO THE ROOT CAUSE OF YOUR SYMPTOMS Identifying and treating the root cause of the problem can often mean a simpler, longer lasting, and more effective outcome for the patient. A recent patient of mine, “Jim,” came to me with a skin rash that had troubled him for years. A dermatologist had ruled out common allergies that might be the cause and he had been to several doctors who had ordered topical creams and other medications to treat the rash. Jim got some relief from the treatments, but the rash persisted and he was looking for a different approach to the problem. I explained that there are numerous underlying conditions that can cause dermatitis (inflammation of the skin) and that we could run some tests to see if we could identify a root cause. After discussing Jim’s medical history, we settled on three possibilities to investigate. One was cortisol induced dermatitis, in which large amounts of the stress hormone are being released that can cause skin inflammation. Another was Hashimoto’s thyroiditis, a condition in which elevated antibodies cause inflammation throughout the body. We also talked about food sensitivity testing to see if Jim might be having a delayed reaction to some of the foods he was eating. After doing some simple lab tests we determined that by avoiding certain foods and by taking some supplements to help reduce Jim’s cortisol output, we could probably reduce the inflammation in his body that was causing the dermatitis. After about two months of following these protocols, he reported an 80% reduction in the symptoms that had been troubling him for years. As a side benefit, Jim was also sleeping better because of the reduced cortisol levels in his system. This is just one example of how addressing the root cause of symptoms can help. I’ve also seen patients who have been on antidepressants for years be able to wean off of their medications by correcting hormone imbalances like estrogen dominance or hypothyroidism. If you’re struggling with a chronic problem, encourage your healthcare provider to dig a little deeper to try to get to the roots. Sometimes a relatively simple and more natural fix can be the answer!

GOLD CANYON COMMUNITY CONNECTION Integrative Health Program

Live it Well

A new year is an opportunity to create new beginnings. How we move through our coming year depends on our inner strength, which allows us to continue despite difficulties and obstacles. Inner strength can be developed like a deeply rooted tree - resilient and strong enough to endure difficult storms and swirling winds. With roots firmly planted, flexibility is more easily attained, enabling the tree to bend and shift as needed and is far less likely to break. When we work to be firmly planted like the roots of a tree, we learn three significant lessons. First, grounding into ourselves and rooting down into our thoughts and emotions helps us know who we are. When we listen to our own inner patterns with compassion and curiosity, we gain inner knowledge and can more easily root. Second, we can more readily feel the connection of others. Through these roots, we find support from those around us who uplift us. Lastly, when we are firmly implanted, we can be more flexible. Given the stressors in life and all the storms that come, we must be able to sway like branches when the winds of change blow around us. So how do we plant firmly like the roots of a tree? We can find one answer in a simple exercise of Qigong, (Che Kung), an ancient practice developed over 1,000 years ago in China. This exercise builds resilience, balance and endurance, like a “Tree Blowing in the Wind.” Standing in upright posture, hands placed one over the other on the lower abdomen, breathing long, slow breaths, begin to sway the body side to side, then forward and back, while holding imagery in the mind, of a tree planted firmly in the rich soil. See your feet and toes as the roots growing deep into the earth. The trunk (body) swaying in the wind, becomes strong like a tree, not breaking or blowing over, but flexible, strong and resilient, able to withstand life’s storms. When we root down into ourselves with loving kindness (as the trees teach us), we gain more flexibility, self-knowledge, awareness and connection to each other. If you ever say to yourself “I can’t take it anymore,“ replace it with “I can handle it” and be the living embodiment of the tree in the wind. The Live it Well Place in Gold Canyon offers Qigong and other Mindful Movement classes through their Integrative Health Program or attend ‘In the Open’ outdoor Mindful Movement classes in partnership with the Gold Canyon Golf Resort. The heart of a community comes from the

connections that are made. 21 years ago, a group of volunteers created the Gold Canyon Community Connection with the vision that community connections, involvement and support are essential to the continued success of our community. A large part of that vision was to publish a printed local business directory. The first booklet had 6 pages and less than 25 businesses, the 2020 directory was 64 pages and listed over 200 businesses. This year, the Business Directory will be published as an interactive and comprehensive directory on the website only. The directory is categorized, and all Websites and emails are linked for convenience. We encourage you to bookmark the Gold Canyon Community Connection website. The business directory is easy to use and a great way to support and shop local. Businesses - please check out your listing. If there are any changes or corrections, or to list your new business, please email info@ goldcanyonconnection.com. We will not be sending out the forms for the businesses this year to update, so please take the time to check your listing. WITH HOME PRICES ON THE RISE, IS IT STILL AFFORDABLE TO BUY A HOME? Gold Canyon’s Housing inventory is at an all time low. Nationwide, Realtor.com reported that there are 39% fewer homes for sale today than there were last year. Yet, buyer demand remains strong. Whenever there is a shortage in supply of homes with solid buyer demand, prices rise and homes sell quickly. That is exactly what is happening now and the reason why home values are surging. If you ever thought about moving, whether to relocate, move into a larger home, or scale down, now would be the time to list your home for sale. This is most definitely a Seller’s Market. The typical question from someone thinking about selling their home is: if I sell my home, can I afford another home? The key for prospective buyers is the realization that the price of the home is not as important as the “monthly cost.”

VIETNAMESE STREET FOOD NOW OPEN IN APACHE JUNCTION A tired building on Apache Trail came to life in early December, besides a new sign and a coat of paint, this place has a promise of a new experience. Vietnamese street food, which happens to be a rarity in Phoenix, especially in Apache Junction, so I had to do some research and find out what this was all about. Walking into Siagon Noms, they have a bright, friendly vibe, and smells that make you want to try everything on the menu. Patrons waiting in line for their order were able to sample the tea blends and coffee drinks before ordering. Banh Mi Sandwhiches are, by far, my favoite on their menu, there are a varietly of styles, but the fixings are all similar; cilantro, jalopenos, pickled daikon radish and carrots, cucumbers, onions, homemade aioli, pate, and soy sauce on a toasted Baguette. The Classic Nom, Grilled Chicken and the Grilled Pork were well seasoned with a mild hint of heat. A different type of sandwhich in Apache Junction, delightfully full of flavor, and well worth the experience. Dont be afraid to step outside of the normal menus out here, Saigon Noms is located next Chase Bank, across from Patriots Transmission on the Trail. They are open from 11am to 7pm Monday - Saturday, Take-Out only.

The National Association of Realtors (NAR) produces a “Housing Affordability Index” which takes into account the two factors, price and mortgage rate, to determine an overall affordability score for housing. Going back to 1990, homes are more affordable today than just about anytime in the last 30 years, other than the years following the housing crises. Why are houses so affordable with prices so high? The answer is the low mortgage rates, which have fallen dramatically. The average interest rate for a 30 year fixed rate mortgage remains at or below 3%. With low interest rates, not only can you afford more house because your monthly payments are less, but over the entire term of the loan, you are paying substantially less in total interest. Therefore even though you may pay a higher price for the home, the lower interest paid during the term of the loan will most often offset that higher price. So don’t hesitate. WORKING FROM HOME COULD MEAN A NEW HOME

There are a lot of people who are working from home for the first time. There are a lot of advantages that come with working from home, such as the opportunity to develop stronger relationships with family members, the chance to save money on gas, and more autonomy over the work schedule. In addition, this could also mean a new home. With many people spending more time at home than they did in the past, they might be thinking about investing in new floorplans, renovating cabinets, and adding a dedicated home office. This could also provide the opportunity to move. Why People Are Thinking About Upgrading Their Homes For those who continue to commute to work, they might not spend that much time in their homes. As a result, they may not be that invested in the overall layout of the home. As long as the home meets their needs when they are present, this is enough. On the other hand, when people work from home, their needs change. For example, many people have their kids home from school right now. Their kids might distract them when they are trying to work. By renovating the home and creating a dedicated space for a home office, this could allow someone to be more productive. Renovating the home is about meeting people’s needs as they change. The Prospect Of Moving Entirely On the other hand, some people might be thinking about moving to a new home entirely. The vast majority of people end up purchasing a new home because they have recently obtained a new job and need to live close to work. When someone works from home, they can live just about anywhere they choose. While many people still choose to live relatively close to their current location, working from home

provides people with more flexibility than they had in the past. Therefore, many families are taking advantage of it. Working From Home Will Become More Common In the future, working from home is going to become more common. As technology continues to improve, people are going to have the opportunity to work from home for the foreseeable future. This represents a lifestyle shift that many people are going to embrace. Cranberry Orange Cookies

Marlene’s Olive Balls

These olive balls make great appetizers and are good hot or at room temperature. • 2 c shredded sharp cheddar cheese (I use Tillamook cheese) • ½ c butter –softened • ¼ tsp hot pepper sauce (or to taste) • ½ tsp salt • 1 tsp paprika • 1 c flour • 36 stuffed green olives Allow cheese to sit out until it is at room temperature. In a large bowl, mix together the cheese, butter and paprika. Gradually mix in flour, first using a pastry blender, then using your hands. Mix until the dough pulls together. It should form a solid ball with a smooth appearance, but have a crumbly texture when pulled apart. If dough appears too dry, add more shredded cheese. Preheat oven to 400 degrees. Pinch off a small piece of dough, and cover an olive with it. Roll gently between your palms to smooth and seal the olive inside the ball. Place onto an ungreased cookie sheet and repeat with remaining dough and olives. Place the tray of covered olives into the refrigerator for 10 minutes to firm up. Bake for 15 minutes or until golden brown. Serve hot or at room temperature. This recipe comes from a friend that brought these to an office Christmas party! ¾ c butter, softened 1 c sugar 1 egg 2 c flour 1 ½ tsp baking powder ¼ tsp baking soda ½ c dried cranberries, finely chopped (I used ½ c fresh cranberries) • 1 Tbsp orange zest • ½ c sugar Preheat oven to 350 degrees. Using an electric mixer, mix butter and 1 cup sugar until light and fluffy. Add egg. In a separate bowl, combine flour, baking powder, and baking soda. Add to butter mixture and mix until just combined. Fold in cranberries and 1 Tbsp orange zest. Chill dough while you make the orange sugar. Combine ½ cup sugar and 1 Tbsp orange zest. Use your fingers to rub the two together until everything is combined and mixture is fragrant. Shape dough into 1 inch balls and roll in the orange sugar. Place on baking sheet and flatten slightly. Bake 10 – 13 minutes or until lightly golden. Cool on wire racks. Recipe from Fake Ginger - Contact Marsha at marsha.dorris.realtor@gmail with any questions or comments.

⅔ c milk ⅓ c vegetable oil 1 egg, beaten ¼ c honey ½ c Quaker Oats, Old Fashion 1 c all-purpose flour ½ c raisins ⅓ c firmly packed brown sugar 1 Tbsp baking powder ¾ tsp salt ½ c chopped nuts - optional

Combine the oats, flour raisins, brown sugar, baking powder, salt (and nuts, if using) in a medium sized bowl. Add the milk, vegetable oil, beaten egg and honey, mixing just until dry ingredients are moistened. Fill 12 greased or paperlined muffin cups 2/3 full. Her curiosity about the natural world, her fierce love for her sisters, and her father’s brilliant stories spark the fire of her own imagination. Betty learns to escape when she begins to write. The main one is about a high school girl that goes missing and a man, who had a very interesting, some say unbelievable, childhood, who tries to find her. Snappy dialogue, compelling characters and short chapters contribute to the fast-paced tempo, and keep you turning pages long into the night. The Noel Letters by Richard Paul Evans, recommended by Kelley A very heartfelt story involving misplaced anger, forgiveness & the many layers of love. A great read for any time of the year! Sunrise on Half Moon Bay by Robyn Carr, recommended by Tracie Carr turns away from her “Virgin River Series” to two sisters different in ages, expectations and careers. One sister is a sophisticated lawyer with her own family and the other is caretaker to their mother in their hometown in the house they were raised. Death, divorce, and deceit open the sisters up to each other and lives with new possibilities and futures intertwined. Good read
