GREETINGS TO ALL ADOBE MEMBERS AND FRIENDS AMAZING PEACE: A Christmas Poem By Maya Angelou
Thunder rumbles in the mountain passes And lightning rattles the eaves of our houses. Flood waters await us in our avenues. Snow falls upon snow, falls upon snow to avalanche Over unprotected villages. The sky slips low and grey and threatening. We question ourselves. What have we done to so affront nature? We worry God. Are you there? Are you there really? Does the covenant you made with us still hold? Into this climate of fear and apprehension, Christmas enters, Streaming lights of joy, ringing bells of hope And singing carols of forgiveness high up in the bright air. The world is encouraged to come away from rancor, Come the way of friendship. It is the Glad Season. Thunder ebbs to silence and lightning sleeps quietly in the corner. Flood waters recede into memory. Snow becomes a yielding cushion to aid us As we make our way to higher ground. Hope is born again in the faces of children It rides on the shoulders of our aged as they walk into their sunsets. Hope spreads around the earth. Brightening all things, Even hate which crouches breeding in dark corridors. In our joy, we think we hear a whisper. At first it is too soft. Then only half heard. We listen carefully as it gathers strength. We hear a sweetness. The word is Peace. It is loud now. It is louder. Louder than the explosion of bombs. We tremble at the sound. We are thrilled by its presence. It is what we have hungered for. Not just the absence of war. But, true Peace.

A harmony of spirit, a comfort of courtesies. Security for our beloveds and their beloveds. We clap hands and welcome the Peace of Christmas. We beckon this good season to wait a while with us. We, Baptist and Buddhist, Methodist and Muslim, say come. Peace. Come and fill us and our world with your majesty. We, the Jew and the Jainist, the Catholic and the Confucian, Implore you, to stay a while with us. So we may learn by your shimmering light How to look beyond complexion and see community. It is Christmas time, a halting of hate time. On this platform of peace, we can create a language To translate ourselves to ourselves and to each other. At this Holy Instant, we celebrate the Birth of Jesus Christ Into the great religions of the world. We jubilate the precious advent of trust. We shout with glorious tongues at the coming of hope. All the earth’s tribes loosen their voices To celebrate the promise of Peace. We, Angels and Mortals, Believers and NonBelievers, Look heavenward and speak the word aloud. Peace. We look at our world and speak the word aloud. Peace. We look at each other, then into ourselves And we say without shyness or apology or hesitation. Peace, My Brother. Peace, My Sister. Peace, My Soul.

Staff Picks Of The Month
FROM APACHE JUNCTION PUBLIC LIBRARY
The Lincoln Highway by Amor Towles, recommended by Louise
Malibu Rising by Taylor Jenkins Reid, recommended by Karen
Matrix by Lauren recommended by Megan
Part allegory, part coming-of-age tale, part journey, The Lincoln Highway is a tour de force by Amor Towles, beloved author of A Gentleman in Moscow. Towles wears his erudition lightly; though he may reference Odysseus, the Bible and Huckleberry Finn in almost the same breath, he is always sure to share the story of his references with his readers, making us feel better read and more intelligent than we might actually be. The four Musketeers (Emmet, Wooly, Duchess and Billy) – all for one and one for all! – are each on a journey of emancipation. Though they may travel part of the road together, each is on an individual quest and their various backgrounds, characters and life choices inform the outcome for each. Through it all the Lincoln Highway, the first cross-continental road in the U.S., beckons. There are many colorful ancillary characters who pop in and out of the tale; each is full-blooded and real as the protagonists. This is a complex, delightful book I could not put down.
An interesting family saga of generations of the Riva family and how one night can change everyone’s lives. A story of love, life, and the sacrifices we make (or don’t make) for family.
The life story of a 12th-century nun might sound incredibly boring, but Lauren Groff’s novel is anything but dull. Marie is cast out of royal court and sent to an abbey, which she transforms from starving to thriving through sheer force of her incredible will. This book made my head spin – it’s fascinating, feminist, and very compelling. Get thee to the nunnery!
A Stranger in Town by Kelley Armstrong, recommended by Dennis This is the 6th book in the Rockton/ Casey Duncan series. The series focuses on Rockton, a small town hidden in the Canadian Yukon. The town is populated by individuals who are escaping their past. To live there, residents have to be approved by a council and pay an entry fee. This book focuses on the “Hostiles,” primitive and aggressive people who left Rockton and live their life in the wild. It is a mystery as how they became “hostile” - there are others who left Rockton but have retained their humanity. Investigation into the “Hostile” mystery is reawakened by an injured hiker who is found in the woods. Who attacked the woman? Why was she attacked? Were there others in her party? These are all questions Casey Duncan has to answer. As she investigates, she discovers that some of the “Hostiles” did not join their group by choice. I have enjoyed every book in this series. The characters are well defined, the plots are exciting and there is always a satisfactory ending.

Groff,
Paper Palace by Miranda Cowley Heller, recommended by Tracie Eleanor feels the most complete at the Paper Palace, the rustic family cabin in the Back Woods of Cape Cod that she tries to visit every summer. The author bluntly writes about the major events of Eleanor’s life interspersed with family stories, occasions and traditions of the Back Woods. Great characters, fizzled lives - I did not like the ending but any book that pulls at emotions is a good read. This is a good read. The Christmas Wedding Guest by Susan Mallery, recommended by Trish Spend the holidays in Wishing Tree, Washington! Christmas time is about relationships, family, reconnections and love. As Dena and Reggie’s parents renew their wedding vows both sisters find unexpected love.

WREATHS ACROSS AMERICA NATIONAL REMEMBRANCE DAY by Nancy Fassbender On December 18th, we will be having a ceremony at the MountainView Cemetery. East Valley has never decorated a Veteran’s grave for this occasion. We have a special program which will start exactly at 9:30am sharp! The AJHS JROTC will be presenting the colors, the AZ Emerald Society of the Pipes and Drums will be there, and we have a fantastic trumpeteer, Debbie Fisher who will perform. Then at 10:00am we will start laying wreaths at each Veteran’s grave. The reason as to why it is at 10 o/ clock, is that Nationwide, wreaths will start laying wreaths on the Veterans graves in all participating cemeteries all at the same time. A Special Thank you to VFW Post 7968, Albertsons/Safeway, Crescent Crown, Bruce & Linda Ingram, MountainView Cemetery, Hensley & Co., American Legion Post 27 and Sons of American Legion Post 27 for being $1500 sponsors and Guild Mortgage Company for being a National Sponsor for $5000! If you would like to come out to the ceremony as well as help decorate a veteran's grave, please call Nancy Fassbender at 520-280-4715. This is a rewarding experience that you and your family can share together. “I believe that children need to understand what each of these Veterans did to serve and sacrificed in order to help make our Country free.” 12 | Superstition Living

BOYCE THOMPSON ARBORETUM AND THE GOLD CANYON GARDEN CLUB HOST Blue Star Memorial Dedication on Veteran’s Day 2021
The Gold Canyon Garden Club wishes to thank the Boyce Thompson Arboretum for partnering with us to bring Arizona’s 20th Blue Star Memorial Highway Marker to a beautiful site at the entrance of the Arboretum. The Blue Star Memorial Marker honors all men and women who have served in the Armed Forces of this great nation in the past, present and future. The Memorial was purchased with donations to the Gold Canyon Garden Club and Boyce Thompson Arboretum agreed to donate the site in this beautiful venue with vegetation and mountain views. Pictures of the dedication will be in next month’s publication. The Blue Star was adopted because it had become an icon in World War II when it was seen on homes, churches and businesses honoring fathers, sons and daughters serving in the war. In 1945 what is now the National Garden Clubs, Inc. began the Blue Star Program with the planting of 8,000 Dogwood trees in New Jersey as a living memorial to veterans of World War II. The Blue Star Highway System was begun covering thousands of miles of highways across the United States. Blue Star Memorials can be seen all over the United States. Please come and view the Blue Star Memorial when you are visiting Boyce Thompson Arboretum or driving to Superior. The Arboretum’s address is 37615 E. Arboretum Way, Superior, AZ and it is open 8 AM to 5 PM October through April. The Arboretum is closed Thanksgiving Day and Christmas Day. There is no fee to enter the parking area where the Blue Star Memorial is located. The website is btarboretum.org to confirm hours and events for Boyce Thompson Arboretum.

FINANCIAL FOCUS MATTRUPPERT
RETIREES FEAR BECOMING A BURDEN
It’s human nature to want to make things easier for our loved ones – and to have great concern about adding any stress to their lives. In fact, 72% of retirees say that one of their biggest fears is becoming a burden on their families, according to the Edward Jones/Age Wave Four Pillars of the New Retirement study. How can you address this fear? First, don’t panic. In all the years leading up to your retirement, there’s a lot you can do to help maintain your financial independence and avoid burdening your grown children or other family members. Consider these suggestions: • Increase contributions to your retirement plans and health savings account. The greater your financial resources, the greater your financial independence – and the less likely you would ever burden your family. So, contribute as much as you can afford to your IRA, your 401(k) or similar employer-sponsored retirement plan. At a minimum, put in enough to earn your employer’s matching contributions, if offered, and increase your contributions whenever your salary goes up. You may also want to contribute to a health savings account (HSA), if it’s available. • Invest for growth potential. If you start investing early enough, you’ll have a long time horizon, which means you’ll have the opportunity to take advantage of investments that offer growth potential. So, in all your investment vehicles – IRA, 401(k), HSA and whatever other accounts you may have – try to devote a reasonable percentage of your portfolio to growthoriented investments, such as stocks

and stock-based funds. Of course, there are no guarantees and you will undoubtedly see market fluctuations and downturns, but you can help reduce the impact of volatility by holding a diversified portfolio for the long term and periodically rebalancing it to help ensure it is aligned with your risk tolerance and time horizon. Keep in mind, though, that diversification does not ensure a profit or protect against loss in a declining market. • Protect yourself from long-term care costs. Even if you invest diligently for decades, your accumulated wealth could be jeopardized, and you could even become somewhat dependent on your family, if you ever need some type of long-term care, such as an extended stay in a nursing home or the services of a home health care aide. The likelihood of your needing such assistance is not insignificant, and the care can be quite expensive. In fact, the median cost for home health services is nearly $55,000 per year, while a private room
in a nursing home can exceed $100,000, according to Genworth, an insurance company. To help protect yourself against these steep and rising costs, you may want to contact a financial professional, who can suggest an appropriate strategy, possibly involving various insurance options. • Create your estate plans. If you were ever to become incapacitated, you could end up imposing various burdens on your family. To guard against this possibility, you’ll want to ensure your estate plans contain key documents, such as a financial power of attorney and a health care directive. It’s safe to say that no one ever wants to become a financial burden to their family. But putting appropriate strategies in place can go a long way toward helping avoid this outcome. PRESENT MOMENT PEACE
The busyness of the holidays is upon us. There are parties to plan, special meals to prepare, gift shopping to be done. It’s a time of sensory overload as we join the jostling crowds scurrying to accomplish their to-do lists, pushing their way through aisles crowded with merchandise. It is the season for DOING, and it is especially important during this bustling time to remember to balance our doing with our BEING. Practicing the presence of being means we are completely aware of the moment that we are in now. When we focus on this awareness we become the observer of our thoughts, letting them move through our minds without compulsively acting on them. We don’t identify with our thoughts—that is to say, we recognize that our thoughts are simply ideas passing through our minds and don’t necessarily represent our true selves. This attitude brings peace to the body and mind. Being mindful of each breath and being aware of everything the body is feeling at a given moment is a tool that keeps us focused on the presence of being. We are not focused on our future to-do list or worried about past events or what might be around the corner; we are immersed in the now. Why is being in the present moment so astoundingly healthy for us? Because it frees the mind of compulsive thoughts, and when we still the mind we gain both emotional and physical benefits.
• A calm mind calms the nervous system, lowering the overproduction of the stress hormone cortisol that makes us feel anxious. • When we are at peace we sleep better. Serotonin and melatonin ae released with ease to promote deep and restful sleep, which strengthens the immune system. • Presence of being assists us in the awareness and enjoyment of sensory perception. When I am present, I taste, smell, and enjoy all of the ingredients in my food as opposed to gulping my food on the run. I appreciate the touch of different textures of fabric or the velvety feel of a rose petal. When my mind and body are still, I become grateful for my own private symphony that the birds perform as I relax in my back yard.
• When we are in the present moment we listen to others with open ears and open hearts. We are not using our thoughts to judge, but seek the divine essence of the other. Being completely present with another person means we can truly listen—we don’t just hear what they are saying; we feel the intention of their words. We do not live in the future or the past. It is only the present moment that we have, and each moment offers special gifts that can enhance the joy and beauty of life. Receiving those gifts with gratitude in our hearts gives us peace and truly puts us in the holiday spirit!

Christmas Lights By Marcia Nelson
Yes, Christmas is coming as it always does. But is it really that special, or is it “just because”? … Because of the carols, the toys and the stuff, the trees full of lights. Is that really enough? But if we could just focus on one special light, the star that led travelers to that amazing sight. Or was it the bright sky with Angels high above, singing to shepherds below of joy, peace and love? These heavenly lights were not just for show. They focused God’s love so that all would know. That the special child, born in a stable dim, would be the Light of the world. And we welcome Him. Yes, Christmas is coming and it is because of the Gift that is here, the One that always was!

BUYING A SECOND HOME AS A FIRST HOME: WHAT TO KNOW Many first-time homebuyers are having a difficult time finding the right purchase. Therefore, a new trend is catching on. Some people are renting in the city, where property values are more expensive. Then, they buy a vacation home in the suburbs. Is it smart to buy a second home as a first home? The Advantages Of Buying A Vacation Home First There are several advantages that come with buying a vacation home as a first home. First, buying a vacation home in the suburbs is usually less expensive than purchasing a house in the city. Furthermore, first-time homeowners can rent out their vacation homes the majority of the time, helping them cover monthly mortgage payments. Then, as the value of the vacation home rises, first-time homeowners build equity they can use to purchase a more expensive home in the city later. This can also help people save money on the cost of a vacation. Interest Rates On Vacation Homes Might Be Higher At the same time, interest rates on vacation homes might be higher. Homeowners interested in getting the best interest rates need to live in the home they are buying. If they are not living in that specific home, lenders may charge a higher interest rate. Furthermore, first-time homeowners might have to put more money down to qualify for that loan. Managing A Vacation Home First-time homeowners also have to think about how they will bring in rental income. It might be helpful to work with a property management company that can handle this from start to finish. Or, services such as VRBO or Airbnb might be helpful. Homeowners need to have a plan for how to maximize rental income. The more the home is rented out, the easier it will be to afford the mortgage payments. Have An Emergency Fund Set Aside First-time homeowners still need to have an emergency fund set aside for the vacation home. What happens if the roof needs a repair? What happens if the HVAC system has to be replaced? Homeowners need to think carefully about how they can cover these expenses. Not all of them are covered by home insurance, and some of them can cost thousands of dollars. Check with your tax advisor or financial planner for more information! December 2021 | 19
The Art of Giving and Receiving Sue Schaffer The art of giving and receiving is about creating an unconditional and sustainable abundance of love, peace and happiness and contentment for others through gestures of kindness and generosity. You have probably heard the familiar adage, “It is better to give than to receive.” It would be difficult to find someone who would say otherwise for both giving and receiving elicit positive feelings and emotions making it one of the most powerful exchanges you can have with someone. It is important to be both a good giver and a good receiver. The art of giving simply defined is giving from the heart without any expectation of something in return. There is no doubt that giving is celebrated. You may have been taught the importance of giving by your parents, friends or extended community as you were growing up. While it is evident that modern society emphasizes the giving of gifts through the holidays or on special occasions it is unmistakable that the true act of giving is not limited to a specific day or dollar amount. The art of receiving requires that you be a gracious receiver. To receive gratefully, any gift, is a humbling experience. We need to practice receiving, as it is not taught as readily how important it is. Gratefully accepting gifts is the balance because it offers a chance for others to give. It is also not about expecting others to give to you because you are more important or deserving. Receiving of a gift without guilt or neediness, and without feeling obliged to give back, is a true art. The intention behind your giving is the most essential thing. The intention should always be to create happiness for both the giver and the receiver. Especially during a trying time – such as these past few years – we need to connect with each other and a simple act of giving goes a long way, both for our own mental health and for the happiness of others. Family, friends, and communities are struggling, more so now than ever before. Supporting your neighbor, your local food bank, animal rescue, or community outreach program could benefit not only from your donations, but they may also need your help serving the community. Take a moment to observe or ask around the community to locate somewhere you can give a heart-felt donation. Having the power to improve the lives of others is, to many people, a privilege, and one that comes with its own sense of obligation. Acting on these powerful feelings of responsibility is a great way to reinforce our own 20 | Superstition Living
personal values and feel like we’re living in a way that is true to our own ethical beliefs. True acts of giving can be as simple as treating every person you meet as someone who you can give something special to. Not all gifts need to be purchased with money but can include personal acts of kindness which is a special form of giving. More so than we think, it’s not money or material things that people need, it’s the things that can’t be seen. Here are some small ways you can strengthen the practice and art of giving in your life: ♥ Offer a kind word ♥ Share knowledge ♥ Be kind ♥ Convey a compliment ♥ Lend a helping hand ♥ Provide support during a difficult time ♥ Compliment a stranger ♥ Donate to a charity of your choice ♥ Send a message of appreciation ♥ Give a hug ♥ Say “thank you” ♥ And just Smile If you find yourself lucky to be on the receiving end of any of these gifts, be sure to take a moment to pause and truly accept it with a sense of gratitude, honor, and appreciation. In this way, both you and the giver will reap the benefits and be truly blessed. “Namaste, May the light within me, honor the light within you.”

IN THE KITCHEN
WITH MARSHA MARSHADORRIS
A delicious cherry filling is spread over a golden-brown crust and topped with a smooth creamy frosting and sprinkled with coconut! This is a favorite with my family and friends. Great for the holiday season!! CRUST 2 c all-purpose flour 1/3 c sugar ¾ c butter FILLING 2 eggs, slightly beatened 1 c packed brown sugar 1/3 c flour 1 ½ tsp baking powder ½ tsp salt ½ tsp vanilla extract 10oz jar maraschino cherries, drained & chopped (save liquid) ½ c walnuts, chopped FROSTING 2 Tbsp butter, softened 2 ½ c powdered sugar 4 Tbsp maraschino cherry liquid TOPPING ¼ c flaked coconut Heat oven to 350 degrees. In a medium bowl, combine all crust ingredients; blend at low speed until crumbly. Press mixture firmly in bottom of an ungreased 13x9 inch pan. Bake 12 to 15 minutes or until lightly browned. In large bowl, combine all filling ingredients; mix well, spread evenly over partially baked crust. Return to oven and bake for an additional 20 to 25 minutes or until toothpick inserted in center comes out clean. In small bowl, combine frosting ingredients and beat until smooth. Add more cherry liquid if needed for desired spreading consistency. Spread over cooled bars and sprinkle with coconut! Recipe courtesy of Pillsbury.
JAMI’S BREAKFAST CASSEROLE
This is an easy layered dish that would be perfect to make on Christmas morning and pop into the oven before gathering around with the family! INGREDIENTS 5 to 6 cups frozen hash brown potatoes (I had a 30 oz bag and had some left over) Salt and pepper 1 ½ - 2 - 14oz cans of Corned Beef Hash, cooked OR 1 .25 lbs sausage OR chorizo, cooked and drained, OR bacon cooked, drained and crumbled (use as much or as little as you like) 1 - 27oz can of Fire Roasted Whole Green Chilies (mild) I used Ortega brand (at Fry’s, you will have leftovers, did not see a smaller can of these) 1 - 7oz can Diced Green Chilies 24 to 30 ounces shredded Monterey Jack Cheese OR Cheddar Cheese OR ½ and ½ 1 – 12oz can Evaporated Milk 1 Dozen eggs I used a DEEP 9x13 inch baking dish. Layer the frozen hash brown potatoes on the bottom, sprinkle with a little salt and pepper. Next layer can be the corned beef hash, sausage, chorizo or bacon. Sprinkle about 1 ½ cups cheese on top. Take 6 whole green chilies from the can and slice on one edge and open it up. Take out any seeds, rinse and dry. Layer this on the meat. Next, sprinkle the rest of the cheese except for 1/2c. Spread the Diced Green Chilies on top. Beat the 12 eggs in a bowl with the evaporated milk and pour over the top. Sprinkle the last ½ cup of cheese on top. Cook uncovered in a 350 degree oven for 55 to 60 minutes, or until knife inserted in center comes out clean, not watery. Recipe from Jami Taylor that she has modified. This is an easy recipe that can be changed up to whatever your preferences are. You could just make a plain Chile Relleno if you like! ENJOY!!

Submitted by Diana Jensen, MountainBrook Village Have you noticed how clean the Bashes shopping center is? The parking lot, front sidewalk area, empty lot that borders Superstition Blvd and Leslie’s Pool, and yes, even the delivery area behind Bashes center. You can thank these two wonderful ladies for picking up every single piece of trash that we have thrown on the ground since COVID19 started. For some reason, many shoppers seem to think it is OK to drop their used mask, gloves and wipes in the parking lot by their vehicle instead of putting that “bio-hazzard waste” inside their vehicle and taking it home to toss. Five days a week they are there with used plastic grocery bags and grabbers, accumulating 10-20-30 bags of discarded cups, straws, snack wrappngs, kleenex, etc. and the above mentiond discarded personal safety items before they tire out, finally sit and have a cup of coffee, then start their long walk home. It started one day driving home on Superstition Drive, they were sad seeing so much trash that was visible from the car. So, they set their minds on Cleaning Up during their morning walk. They had no idea what a large undertaking it would be. But they perservered by walking early to try and beat some of the heat and, finally in July, met their first goal of having only a one-bag day. They are still there every day on maintenance duty. On an OK day, they only have a bag or two but some days still more. They are still hoping Mary(left) and Arlene(right) cleaning up for that NO BAG day. Now that would be a great day! As always, there is a silver lining in every cloud. Besides the satisfaction they found in doing this project, they found two $20 bills which bought them a few cups of coffee at the end of a tiring morning.

The photo exhibit will feature photographs of women over 50 that Colling captured during a “model for a day session” in her private studio. The project was born from a movement that is gaining momentum across the nation that sets out to show that women of a certain age are accomplished, vibrant, and relevant. “When I embarked on this journey I knew that I was about to meet some incredible women and I did indeed. This photo exhibit includes an Arizona Hall of Fame Veteran, a published author, survivors of cancer and domestic violence, along with women entrepreneurs and business owners who are all thriving and giving back.” Colling said. Colling added that, “It is my hope that everyone in our society learns to see the value in all members regardless of their age. We are so much more than how many years we have been on this planet, though the number of years does give us the advantage of wisdom!” Each portrait will be exhibited gallery style alongside personal bios and quotes that Colling collected from each of the women featured in the exhibit. Colling hopes the younger generation will embrace the wisdom and strength offered. She also hopes the exhibit will show younger women that they can look forward to aging, and there is a new level of wisdom and beauty ahead.
For the third year, the Library joins with Apache Junction Animal Control Paws & Claws Care Center to collect donations for the city’s homeless pets this holiday season. Through January 8, the library will collect cleaning and pet supply donations for animals at the city’s open-admission shelter. The shelter serves a vital role in rescuing pets in need and among its many services it offers housing and second chances for abandoned pets, none of whom are turned away. It also protects public health and safety by enforcing laws and ordinances, responding to complaints of animal abuse, and working with a dozen rescue and welfare partners to find loving homes for homeless animals. “So far in 2021 we have taken in almost 2000 animals from within the community,” said care center manager Lori Erlandson. “We are slightly higher on intakes as compared to last year and unfortunately, adoptions have slowed down for shelter pets across the valley. We are always so grateful for the community support that allows us to continue to provide safe, comfortable housing for our shelter animals.” Want to participate, but don’t know what to donate? PCCC provided a wish list to help guide you: • Kitty litter • Cleaning supplies • Canned food (cat, dog, puppy and kitten) • Peanut butter • Poop bags • Leashes & collars • Nylabones • Kong toys • Cat and dog treats • Dryer sheets
