OUR CHARITY PARTNER

MORE AND MORE PEOPLE ARE FINDING THEMSELVES ENDING UP SLEEPING ON THE STREETS. OVER 4750 PEOPLE WERE COUNTED AS SLEEPING ROUGH ON THE STREETS OF ENGLAND IN 2017. THIS WAS A 168% INCREASE FROM 2010.

Simon on the Streets is a local outreach-focused charity that supports rough sleepers in Leeds, Bradford, Huddersfield and other areas of West Yorkshire, concentrating on those that are excluded from or who refuse to work with other services. Its service users are often men and women with no support network who suffer from complex mental and physical health issues that are often undiagnosed. Simon on the Streets puts a high value on emotional support and often try to help people to find aspirations and give unlimited opportunities to achieve sustainable positive change. For this reason, Simon on the Streets

does not currently receive government or local authority funding as the offer of support provided to rough sleepers is not time-limited. Over the year, the team at Water Lane Boathouse and partner places are supporting Simon on the Streets to reach more vulnerable adults in need by taking part in various fundraising activities and help them raise awareness of their work. If you’d like to get involved in upcoming fundraising opportunities with Simon on the Streets just check out their website www.simononthestreets.co.uk.

IF YOU’D LIKE MORE INFORMATION ABOUT SIMON ON THE STREETS AND THEIR SERVICES TO HELP ROUGH SLEEPERS IN WEST YORKSHIRE YOU CAN VISIT THEIR WEBSITE, EMAIL ON ADMIN@SIMONONTHESTREETS.CO.UK OR CALL 0113 345 2270.

You have to own it, play it like you mean it and stand with it through thick or thin. hat’s the way you’ll win people over. laying a track that people didn’t expect and then shrinking behind the decks or pulling an ooops’ face isn’t going to bring anyone with you hat said, I did play a rare extended mix of a yle inogue track at Y in erth last year, which went down like a lead balloon.

CHRISTIE

HENDRY

WE CAUGHT UP WITH CHRISTIE HENDRY, CURRENT RESIDENT ARTIST FOR BELGRAVE’S ‘ABOVE’ EXHIBITION. WHAT ARE YOU UP TO AT THE MINUTE? I’m currently working between two retail jobs as I needed to give my mind and body a little creative break and get adjusted to life after uni. WHAT’S BEEN THE BIGGEST HURDLE YOU’VE FACED AS AN ARTIST?  he biggest hurdle I’ve faced as an artist is definitely a personal hurdle. I found it really hard at uni to stay confident within my self because your always surrounded by your peers ama ing work which makes its so hard to stay positive about your own talent. It did make me uestion wether what I was doing was right’ and it took me ages to realise that there was no right or wrong and that everybody’s talent is uni ue and should be celebrated. ANY EXCITING THINGS IN THE PIPELINE?  Yeah actually fter ew Year I will be running some creative classes at local Leeds schools which will then become part of a bigger musical and art experience for children still in education. longside this my main plan is to save up money so I can eventually move to London and pursue a dream job in fashion design. WHAT’S YOUR PLAN ONCE YOU GRADUATE? I actually graduated this year which was an e ually ama ing and scary feeling ven though uni tried to prepare us for graduate life, I didn’t feel ready to be thrown into the deep end. So instead I went travelling for a while to celebrate finally leaving the education life then came back and did a super fun inspiring print design internship in London with fashion designer andra hodes. ANY ADVICE FOR FELLOW STUDENTS?  y one regret is that I never did any internships whilst I was still learning and after recently completing one I realised how valuable the knowledge and experience was, not only in regards to professional experience but it also helped me reali e what I wanted

to pursue as a career. ni really is the perfect most affordable time to do them too as it’s pretty much the only time an unpaid internship is affordable as your still being financed by your oh so wonderful student loans. WHAT ARE YOU LISTENING TO AT THE MOMENT? Lionhearted by Billie arten and owboy Song by lass ountain WHAT HAS BEEN YOUR FAVOURITE RECORD OF THE YEAR SO FAR?  Bad ontestant by att altese WHEN YOU’RE NOT AT HOME OR AT WORK YOU’RE… I love going on little road trips with my boyfriend where we explore new places and discover new and inspiring sights and its even more perfect when we can bring our little pooches along too. WHERE’S YOUR FAVOURITE LEEDS HANGOUT?  I’d have to say most of my time is split between Brudenell , Belgrave and Whitelock’s purely for the good friends, good craft beer and e ually good atmosphere. You can view Christie’s work in the ground floor bar at Belgrave Music Hall.

BAILE CO-FOUNDER OF SOCIAL RADIO

SOCIAL

RADIO

BIT ABOUT YOU: rrrr in no order, I like farming, techno, politics but not old white people in parliament politics , basketball, vegetable affe, merchandise and organs as in the instrument, I really like them. TELL US A BIT ABOUT WHY AND HOW YOU STARTED SOCIAL RADIO? I started Social adio with some other cool people because we felt like there wasn’t a radio which accommodated a wide range of music and styles of show i.e. chatting etc. hapelfm do really cool things but we don’t want to solely be a community radio hopefully we can be far reaching and attract artists passing through, hence the slogan Leeds to the osmos WHAT HAS BEEN THE MOST EXCITING PART OF STARTING A RADIO STATION? Seeing the studio all put together and sending the first broadcast out was really fun. lso just seeing how enthusiastic everyone else is and how keen people are to get involved via submissions, collaborate and learn radio stuff made it clear there was a demand.

ANYTHING YOU LEARNED FROM YOUR TEST BROADCAST? Lots. whole lot. Lots of technical things and that it’s uite a big task WHY DO YOU THINK LEEDS NEEDED A NEW RADIO PLATFORM FOR 2019? We wanted a station where everyone feels welcome and can talk and any good music you feel like, ideally one which your untie feels encouraged enough to play her music, that draws in enthusiastic local young people and also the visiting or band want to do a live set. FINALLY, WHAT IS YOUR FAVOURITE TRACK TO HEAR ON THE RADIO? Laura did a show of music from ndalucia and played a ala odrigue who I’m a big fan of, I think the song was Lluvia. lso someone played Sanc by ertrelli urple which is one of my favourites from . But all the shows are up on mixcloud so go listen
