OUR CHARITY PARTNERS We’re proud to announce that over the next 12 months we’ll be partnering with a number of Leeds-based causes, helping raise funds, awareness and showing our support for all of the fantastic work that they do. Read on to find out more about the individual charities and our exciting plans below…

LEEDS MIND Leeds Mind supports people with mental health difficulties, providing supportive services and activities throughout the Leeds area. Leeds Mind believe that everyone can lead a full, active and rewarding life, working with its clients to support them in achieving their goals and engaging in their local communities. Over the next year, Belgrave Music Hall will be working alongside the charity to help raise funds so it can continue its important work within the city, and help to break down the stigma associated with mental health.

MAP For 10 years MAP Charity has offered inspiration, qualifications and first-hand experience to young people at risk of exclusion from the mainstream school system through music and art. For the next 12 months Headrow House will be helping MAP raise vital funds that will be used to purchase and restore its home at Hope Foundry, evolving the site into a vital creative hub for Leeds. MAP’s vision for Hope Foundry includes creating a kitchen, café, roof-garden, studios, co-working, event, gallery and retail spaces, whilst safeguarding the charity’s central provision for young people. Stay tuned for more details of our fundraising events...

SIMON ON THE STREETS Simon on the Streets is an independent charity that offers support to our homeless community, primarily entrenched rough sleepers. Working in West Yorkshire, in particular, Leeds, Bradford and Huddersfield. Simon on the Streets offer tailored support on an individual basis with no time limitations. The Water Lane Boathouse team will be joining the charity on its Sleep With Simon 2018 event to raise funds and awareness.

If you’d like to show your support for these important causes, you can find out how to help and more information on our Facebook pages.

HEAVY EROL ALKAN Plays atural Selection at Headrow House on 0 10

WHAT IS YOUR FAVOURITE TRACK TO OPEN YOUR SET WITH? Well, I’m currently playing extended sets, a minimum of hours or so, so I end up playing from the beginning. There’s a track by William Basinski title ip ’ from his isintegration Tapes series which I play backwards. The original lasts 20 minutes and the sounds degrade over that time, until there is nothing left. By playing it in reverse, it begins from nothing and evolves into a beautiful loop, and by then there’s a few people in the club. IS THERE A TRACK YOU HAVE PLAYED AND THEN INSTANTLY REGRETTED? Regret is a terrible thing. We’ve all made bad judgements but it’ll lead to better decisions in the future, so no regrets as such. WHICH TRACK ALWAYS MAKES THE DANCE FLOOR GO OFF? Currently, its Hunting’ by ew Musik, that one starts the dance nicely. But if you mean the room taking off later in the night, then at the moment it could be the extended mix of abe urnsey’s You Can’ not out yet or my rework for Tuff City ids Reach Out’.

ROTATION TELL US ABOUT A TRACK BY YOUR FAVOURITE NEW ARTIST. Last record which I really liked was the new Whities release by iant Swan, Pax Britannica’, I hear new music which gets my attention every other day. FINALLY, WHICH TRACK DO YOU LOVE TO CLOSE YOUR SET WITH? A slightly self-serving choice but it’s probably my rework of Connan Mockasin’s Forever olphin Love’. People still ask for it and it was designed to close a set by the way it ends, so 8 or so years later, it’s still a contender for the end of the night.

LUCY JADE WILLIAMS MAH Radio Brotherhood Sound System resident

HOW DID YOU GET INTO DJING? When I first moved to Leeds I started to buy records I liked and about a year and a half in, my boss kindly offered to lend me his Technic turntables and a mixer to get me going. My first gig was at my friend’s exhibition, which is where it really kicked off ow after years I’m a resident for Brotherhood Sound System, have a show on MAH Radio and have been given some really

great opportunities to play around Leeds WHAT ARE YOU LISTENING TO AT THE MOMENT? I’ve just got back from acht igital Festival in ermany, where I saw Sofay who was AMA I and the wonderful an Schulte. WHERE’S YOUR FAVOURITE NIGHT OUT IN LEEDS? Love Muscle has been a huge inspiration for me. I really believe it has, and will continue, to change the experience for L BT communities. WHO’S TIPPED TO BE YOUR ARTIST OF 2018? This is a hard question Lena Willikens continues to smash it, but alongside her ris Baha who released an awesome album this year - Can’t eep The Fact. WHO WOULD YOU WANT TO SEE RETURN TO A FUTURE NATURAL SELECTION LINE-UP? I’d like to see jrum return I didn’t get chance to see him and I bet his sound fits nicely within the space. WHAT’S YOUR ADVICE FOR SOMEONE WANTING TO GET INTO THE MUSIC BUSINESS? My advice would be, if you have a passion for music don’t ever let anyone’s opinion on how you should’ or produce change your beliefs, there’s no right or wrong - individuality is much more valuable than following the rest

NADINE

OWNER AT TEMPLE COFFEE & DONUTS

WHAT’S BEEN THE MOST EXCITING PART OF THE TEMPLE JOURNEY SO FAR? It’s all been pretty exciting. But I guess the beginning was the most adrenaline pumping part. We were only planning on opening for a couple of days a week and we weren’t even sure we would get anyone through the door at all. So that first week was literally mind blowing-the fact we were selling out of donuts and had queues most days was just cra y for us. FAVOURITE PLACE TO EAT IN LEEDS?  I’m a pretty fussy eater so I just have a few go-to places Issho, if i’m feeling fancy, Lupes Cantina, Belgrave any time I want a lovely salty chip and burger, and The Maven - the new restaurant on the top oor is R AT and has loads of options for all dietary requirements. BEST DONUT FLAVOUR COMBINATION?  Personally, I am a cinnamon ring girl, I literally can’t get enough of the soft uffy goodness. B T if I were to get a gla ed it would be the raspberry ripple.

OXLEY

WHAT’S ON THE TEMPLE PLAYLIST AT THE MINUTE? ead Moon’ radio on Spotify. WHAT’S THE BEST MEAL YOU’VE EATEN THIS MONTH?  Well, I have to say the marmite on toast I had at home this morning was pretty delicious. But if we are talking about eating out then I LO Lupes Cantina. It’s just up the road from Temple. I’m a sucker for a cool-looking building and it looks ama ing from the outside, the food cocktails and everything else inside are super authentic. They cater really well for vegans and the owners seem like lovely people. WHAT’S GETTING YOU EXCITED AT THE MOMENT? The thought of Autumn has got me pretty excited to be honest. We are working on the A W menu here and I just want it to be cold so I can wrap up with a maple cream donut bar and an apple pie smelling hot drink.

Having such a close-knit creative community in the city, with incredible countryside nearby WHAT ARE YOU THINKING? I’m just preparing to leave Leeds after years to move to Berlin so I’m suddenly viewing Leeds with a lovely nostalgia and thinking about all the wonderful creative opportunities here. I am also worried about the commercial growth in Leeds though, and hopeful that this won’t take over the city I love while I’m gone. FAV PLACE TO HANG OUT IN LEEDS? I think one of the things that people love about Leeds seems to be the amount of different people you get to know, and how many interesting people there are. oing on a night out and meeting so many friendly people makes such a difference to your enjoyment of it all, it’s such a vibrant and exciting place to live. WHAT ARE YOU THINKING? Is anye cra y or Is he a genius Will we ever know FAV PLACE TO HANG OUT IN LEEDS? Hyde Park in general is a great place to be, especially for students. The Hyde Park Book Club is always good fun for an intimate event night, but Canal Mills is a great spot for a very different experience RIP Canal Mills . An evening on the Headrow rooftop can’t be missed though, spending early summer days there at the end of last year was a great place to be.

ABBEY

WITHINGTON

WE CAUGHT UP WITH ILLUSTRATOR AND PRINT DESIGNER, ABBEY WITHINGTON, ON WHAT’S BEEN GOING ON IN HER WORLD, AND EXCITING THINGS TO COME… WHAT HAVE YOU BEEN UP TO IN THE PAST YEAR? I left my full-time job and set up as a freelance illustrator in ecember. That was pretty exciting. Since then I’ve been working on commissions and focusing on designing my own range of greetings cards and prints. I was lucky to get a spot on the uke Studios business mentoring residency back in anuary thanks to LCA, where I studied many moons ago. Since then I’ve moved in to a new studio in Leeds city centre and have been keeping pretty busy running the business. It’s been a good year WHAT’S BEEN THE HIGHLIGHT OF YOUR JOURNEY SO FAR? It has to be getting the greetings cards stocked in some of my all-time favourite stationery stores, including Colours May ary in Leeds and Present Correct in London. It’s a great feeling knowing people like your work and want to sell it or buy it. Any time someone buys something from my online shop it makes my day. ANY EXCITING THINGS IN THE PIPELINE? I’ve started to design some new textile products which is pretty exciting. I’m aiming to get everything released for Autumn Winter. There’s also a few collaborations coming out in the next few months including some enamel pins and an exciting project with a friend that is still under wraps . WHAT ARE YOU LISTENING TO AT THE MOMENT? I have a playlist that I pretty much have on repeat when I’m working. There’s a lot of The Beautiful South listen to You eep It All In’ and Baby I’m Yours by the Arctic Monkeys, which is an ace cover of the original by Barbara Lewis from 1 . There’s also a lot of The Cribs and Bruce Springsteen on there I have very eclectic music taste okay . Anything fairly upbeat to keep me going.

WHAT HAS BEEN YOUR FAVOURITE RECORD OF THE YEAR SO FAR? I’m not great at keeping up to date on new releases because I’m a creature of habit. However, I just discovered ing Princess in the depths of a random Spotify playlist. Her voice is ace Make My Bed is a nice listen pper West Side’ in particular . WHAT HAS BEEN YOUR BEST MUSICRELATED EXPERIENCE IN LEEDS? There’s so many great ones. When I was 1 I saw Adam reen at the Faversham which, of what I remember, was up there. I also saw RnB megastar elly at the O2 Academy a couple years back, I don’t know which one makes me sound cooler WHEN YOU’RE NOT AT HOME OR AT WORK/IN THE STUDIO, YOU’RE… With my friends eating pi a. Walking the dog. Rinsing et ix. Working hard or hardly working is my life motto. WHERE’S YOUR FAVOURITE LEEDS HANGOUT? Belgrave for ough Boys, Headrow House for the egronis.

STAY HYDRATED.
