WELCOME It’s hard to know exactly how long the May Fair has been held in Wells, but ultimately it’s a joyous celebration of the start of summer and (hopefully) the beginning of a few months of warm days and fun. Wells Lions hope you enjoy your day here with us, and enjoy the entertainment we have planned for you. From African drumming to the renowned Wells City Band, baton-twirling workshop and, of course, the maypole dancing – featuring pupils from two local schools. There are also plenty of stalls and food vendors to browse in-between the fun. This brochure will let you know everything that’s going on during the day, as well as give you a little more information about Wells Lions, the work we do and previews of future events. We hope you enjoy reading it.

6 I may day fair

According to Wikipedia, “May Day is an ancient northern hemisphere spring festival. Dances, singing, and cake are usually part of the festivities. Traditional English May Day rites and celebrations include crowning a May Queen and celebrations involving a maypole”. The City of Wells Lions have been organising May Day festivities for many years now, and today we welcome children from Stoberry Park and St. Joseph & St. Theresa’s primary schools to dance around the maypole, Apart from adding grace, tradition and colour to our event, the children remind me of Spring. A wonderful age and time of the year packed with so much promise for the future. So what lies ahead for the Lions? City of Wells Lions and the Wells Air Cadets are already planning this year’s popular Moat Boat Races at the end of August.

Perhaps now is a good time to get involved with your friends, company or community group to enter a team and be part of the fun. Ask a member of the Lions about entering. This year we are also looking forward to holding the first Wells Lions Beer and Cider Festival in October and also, by popular demand, the return of the Unravelling Wilburys! Today I would like to thank the volunteers, entertainers, stallholders and advertisers for their involvement. I would especially like to thank the organising team from the Lions who have brought everyone together for this special day. Remember, we do this as part of our community spirit to raise money for local causes, and we rely on your generosity to help us help those in need. To see who we’ve helped in the last 12 months, go to www.cityofwellslions.org/ donations.

The 644th Right Worshipful Mayor of Wells

The annual May Fair is a key tradition for us here in Wells

On behalf of the Mayoress and myself, I would like to take this opportunity to welcome you all to the historic and beautiful City of Wells. We both hope you will enjoy our annual May Fair and the events planned for the day. The annual May Fair is a key tradition for us here in Wells, as it heralds the start of summer. The Wells May Fair has featured many traditions, such as maypole and folk dancing by local schoolchildren, fairground rides, fresh

food outlets and stalls, along with performances by local bands. I know that the Wells Lions are once again putting on a fantastic programme of events for you all to enjoy. Our thanks to the Lions and all those who have helped in organising and putting on this wonderful fair. I, along with the Mayoress, look forward to meeting you all for a traditional day of fun, with something for everyone to enjoy in our beautiful city.

Cathedrals exist to connect, and we are delighted to do so

I am honoured to be asked to write this piece for the Wells Lions. And I do so to celebrate the links between the Cathedral, the City of Wells, and the local area. Cathedrals exist for community, and they connect with so many communities – large numbers come here for regular worship, and civic occasions also draw significant numbers at Christmas, Easter, Harvest and

10 I may day fair

Remembrance. People come here from right across the local community; the Cathedral School and other schools too have very close links. Visitors to the Cathedral from across the UK and the wider world support local businesses, and as Dean I am delighted to be involved with Wells and Somerset life. Cathedrals exist to connect, and we are delighted to do so.

There is so much to celebrate, so much to thank God for and so much to be proud of

12 I may day fair

Wells May Fair heralds the start of summer and even though temperatures have yet to catch up, let us hope that we are blessed with sunshine this weekend. The May Fair is a wonderful occasion which brings people together to celebrate our fair city and its people, as well as raising money for charity. There is always a festive feel, and my wife Jane and I love to wander and soak up the atmosphere. I have just returned to Wells following a trip to Zambia, spending time with local hosts, sharing stories, experiencing the culture and learning about a wealth of locally driven initiatives: from credit unions to rural health centres, schoolbuilding projects to mechanics courses for young people – all of which are made possible by passionate volunteers with few resources. The sense of community in the towns and villages I

visited was so strong, and it is that community feel that I believe the May Fair embodies. Thank you to the Wells Lions and all the volunteers who make it happen. My visit to Zambia, along with 30 people from local Somerset parishes, was part of the celebrations to mark 40 years of the special friendship that the Church of England in Somerset has enjoyed with parishes in Zambia. We will be marking that anniversary with a special service at 2.30pm on Saturday, July 14th in Wells Cathedral, followed by an ‘after-party’ at the Bishop’s Palace. Everyone is welcome, so I do hope you will join me. As we celebrate Wells May Fair, let us pray for our local communities and those who serve us in every walk of life. There is so much to celebrate, so much to thank God for and so much to be proud of.

What's on today

what’s on today

Since 1852, Wells has been entertained by sounds from its own Brass Band. We hope you enjoy today's performances at 1pm and 3pm in the Market Place Today’s band was born in 1989 when the Wells Blue School Band was invited to continue as the Wells City Band. Ivor Lewis was Band Master for 13 years, and his valuable contribution can be seen in the young people he trained who are now adults playing for you at the May Fair today. By this time several important changes had been made. Women were made welcome and band uniform became less sombre, with a burgundy red jacket and black lapels. The band became an important feature at civic functions, church services, village fetes and charity concerts. The band had a fallow period during and between the two Wars. The band’s equipment was stored in the Bishop’s

14 I may day fair

Barn, which was also used as a military barracks. In 1946 the Town Clerk, Mr Dodd was informed that some of the band equipment stored there had disappeared. This was a serious loss for the Wells City Band, and an ex-gratia payment of £73 was made by the military. The band was back in business! With over 160 years serving the community, Wells City Band is now building a strong future. They will continue to rely heavily on recruiting new musicians and on the enthusiastic support of the community. If you are interested in joining the band as a musician, or helping to support them, please email wellscityband@ gmail.com or telephone 01749 675668.

TINA BLACKWILL A baton twirler, a Pom Pom dancer, a choreographer… and a member of Wells Lions Club! Tina Backwill has been teaching and performing for 23 years, and she has showcased her skills most recently on ITV’s West Country News, Come Dine With Me, Britain’s Got Talent, Pebble Mill, Record Breakers and Opportunity Knocks. Tina is delighted to be performing for Wells Lions today, and invites all children to join her for a baton twirling and dancing workshop from 3-4pm outside the Bishop’s Palace.

MENDIP ALL DRUMMERS MAD have been sharing the pleasures of djembe (pronounced gem-bay) hand drumming since they formed in 2005, learning rhythms derived from this West African tradition at their regular Wednesday morning meetings in Croscombe Village Hall (BA5 3QJ), staging have-a-go workshops like this one today, and performing at events throughout the entire region. Today, the group will

be delighted to show you how to play a djembe drum and discover your inner rhythm. Drumming with a group has enormous proven benefits for mental and physical well-being. And it’s fun, too! Find out more at www.mendip alldrummers.btck.co.uk or give Charles a ring on 07881 304609.

Stallholders

Check out our stallholders At today’s event you have slides, rides and all the fun of the fair, with food from every corner of the globe. There are two ice cream stalls (including Mr Whippy), jewellery, wine makers, fudge and nougats, furniture, nicesmelling soaps. More funky jewellery, then Wild as Winds hand & body creams. And the Swallow works skill project Fancy something a bit different? What about a bit of slate by Terry? Handbags from

Mary? And we can’t forget Martin who sells the children’s books? We also have Leslie and her Utility Warehouse Mini to help you save loads of money on your utility bills. Then there’s Alex on the coffee, teas and chocolates, Andy from Just Ales serving up delicious beer, as well as Andy, Richard and Paul with a rickshaw gin bar tempting you with their fair. We also have a vintage bus along with a vintage fire engine.

St John Ambulance are there just in case you need them. Personally we think we’ll need a ice cream man on a bike – and we’ve got one of those, too! Did we forget the Crepe Cart? Oh, and there’s a myriad of charities, including the Wildlife Trust, Rotary Club, carriage driving and, of course, the Lions will have a cake stall just in front of the Fountain. Phew! I think you’ll agree, that’s quite a lot of stalls to look forward to!

thank you We would like to thank our sponsors and advertisers for their support for local charities. We’d like to thank Mike Phelps and his family for their continued support with the storage and the erection of the maypole, without which our event would not be the same; Tony and Sylvia Robbins at the Venue for hosting all our committee meetings; St John ambulance for providing first aid cover. Finally, a big thank you to Lions members and their family and friends, many of whom have been hard at work baking the delicious cakes for our stand this year.

Wells town crier

CITY OF WELLS

HEAR YE!

Leading today’s procession of Maypole dancers from the Town Hall will be Wells Town Crier, Len Sweales. Town criers can be traced back deep in history. They could also have been called bellmen or heralds. They were employed to give out any information that was relevant at the time – births, deaths, goods for sale, lost and found items, the weather, and so on. As Len says: “All the rubbish I pontificate about on a regular basis! “They were the forerunner of newspapers. The earliest reference to a town crier in Wells was in the 16th century. As far as I know, we have had one since then, but records are not good over the continuity of post holders. I am the current town crier and have held the post for 18 years. “I have had the privilege of meeting many famous people on their visits to Wells. I met most of the cast of Hot Fuzz and the film’s director Edgar Wright, Fiona Bruce and the experts of the BBC’s Antiques Roadshow. I even did a show for ITV with Rory Bremner and Richard E Grant. “Oh, and not forgetting Her Majesty The Queen and Prince Phillip. It has been a real privilege and a pleasure to serve Wells in this way.”
