t may be getting darker and cooler, but there’s still plenty of fun stuff happening to get excited about. The fantastic Night at the Abbey is brilliant value and unmissable for anyone who loves good music, and the Somerset Art Weeks event brings us two weeks of the most interesting and original artwork around. One thing that’s clear from compiling the Event Guide every month is that there’s a massive variety in the events every issue. There’s always tons of good live music, but the more you look the more you find, and there’s some amazing events going on each and every month. Thankfully, we’ve managed to get most of them in the magazine for you. Hope you enjoy it.

NEW MUSIC CLUB LAUNCHES IN SHEPTON MALLET

T

he Shepton Mallet Ukulele Group (SMUG) are proud to present a new music club to the town. SMUG, an adult ukulele beginners group, held its first meeting on June 26. The club is run by Ray Smith assisted by Emily Mackay as the musical leader. Ray received a ukulele from his wife as a Christmas present and like many other uke players, utilised YouTube to gain inspiration by following online tutorials and a couple of one-to-one sessions with a local teacher. However, nothing beats getting together with other uke players to practice and learn from each other. The landlady of the Charlton Inn offered the use of the skittle alley and the rest is history so to speak. Utilising social media and word of mouth, news of the new club soon spread and it has gone from strength to strength. The group has

been so successful that it cannot accept any more ‘beginners’. The plan is to launch a separate beginners group where the players can obtain the appropriate training. But like all good things, baby steps is the order of the day. Anyone wishing to find out more about the group can email Ray Smith at sheptonmalletukulelegroup@gmail.com.

Arthritis Pain – Is Your Pet Keeping A ‘Stiff’ Upper Lip?

I

t’s important to us to make sure that older pets are comfortable and enjoy good quality of life as they age. One common problem seen in older dogs and cats is osteoarthritis. When we speak with owners about arthritis and chronic joint pain, we often hear things like “he’s not in pain, he never cries out”, or “she’s limping but she’s not in any pain.” Chronic pain is a lot more difficult to spot than that. Think about the last time you were in pain. Chances are, you weren’t screaming or crying (I hope!), but that doesn’t mean you weren’t in pain. Some signs of chronic joint pain in cats and dogs… A stiff gait on first getting up. Reduced ability to run or jump – cats might struggle to jump to favourite perching spots, or dogs to jump in the car. Behavioural changes – they may seem grumpy or even aggressive. Cats may groom themselves less. Dogs may lick over painful joints, causing a brown staining on the coat.

SOMERSET ART WEEKS

S

o what exactly is Somerset Art Weeks? The simple answer is that it’s a celebration of art in our county, showcasing the many and varied styles of art and artist working in Somerset. For two weeks a year, visitors can discover either a wide range of Open Studios or Exhibitions and Events (the focus is alternated each year). A brochure is produced and people are encouraged to explore the country and develop their love of art. It would be impossible to cover every artist in such a small amount of space, but there are a few on our doorsteps that we recommend you check out. Firstly, pop into Wells and head to the Heritage Courtyard Studios. Housing 10 artists and regular exhibitions, there’s some stunning work available to view.

There’s plenty going on at the Red Brick Building in Glastonbury. Internationally renowned artists Terry Flaxton and Charlotte Humpston from Visualfields are, together with guests, making a collective called ‘The Imaginists’ which will fill the Building with image art, sound, live music, voices and performance. John Fleming will once again be demonstrating historic wet darkroom techniques, as well as presenting an exhibition of Glastonbury Festival photographs from his forthcoming book, Bella’s Fields. There’s also exciting things happening in Shepton Mallet. The Rubbish Art Project will be launching an immersive outdoor exhibition called SHEPTOPIA with a public viewing on September 14. To find out more about Somerset Art Weeks, head to somersetartworks.org.uk.

ELECTRIC BOOGALOO!

T

here’s a very special music event coming to the Bocabar this month, as the unique Electric Swing Circus are bringing their fusion of saucy 1920s swing and stomping electro beats to a themed night like no other. For one night only the Bocabar will become a Speakeasy, complete with vintage décor, Speakeasy shot bar and a Gin and Tonic bar – plus a few other surprises, too. The ESC’s live sets are something to behold, and include an electric double bass, a healthy smattering of vintage sampling, gypsy-jazz guitar, drums, synths and electro beats. The band are fronted by a female double-act, and have been touring full-time at festivals and events across the UK, Europe, Australia and New Zealand. ESC’s music is infectious and upbeat and impossible not to dance to!

The Bocabar run a small number of themed events throughout the year, and they’re always a lot of fun. The bar area is transformed for the occasion, and everyone is encouraged to dress up and join in. The Electric Swing Circus will at the Bocabar on Saturday, September 8. Tickets are just £8 in advance or £10 on the door, and the fun starts at 8pm.

The latest games destined for your console or PC

MARVEL’S SPIDER-MAN

FROM: Sony FORMATS: PS4

RELEASED

7 SEP

The two Insane Games shops, which are located in St. Cuthbert Street, Wells and the Crispin Centre, Street, are the best gaming stores around, with helpful and knowledgeable staff that are always on hand to help find the perfect game for you. Not only do they have a wide selection of the latest games but also a massive range of used titles for both the current gaming machines and also the classic consoles, too.

T

here’s been some cracking Spider-Man games in the past, but this latest one, a PS4 exclusive from Sony, is by far the best one. Created by Insomniac Games (of Spyro the Dragon and Ratchet & Clank fame), what you have here is a totally original story set around a massive area of New York City. The graphics are outstanding, and the simple pleasure of just web-swinging around the city, running along the side of a building before swooping down to the ground will take some time to get bored of. This is the first game released with Marvel’s approval, but we hear that it definitely won’t be the last.

Finished all your games? Looking for something new to do? Both Insane Games stores have a massive range of DVDs for sale, ranging from single titles to complete boxsets. And prices start from just 20p!
