50 killed as Bangladesh aircraft crashes at Nepal airport

Kathmandu: At least 38 passengers were killed and 17 injured when a Bangladeshi plane with 67 passengers and four crew on board crashed and burst into flames as it was trying to land at Kathmandu's Tribhuvan International Airport on Monday. Officials said they had pulled bodies and injured people from the wreckage. The USBangla Airlines plane was arriving from Dhaka when it crashed into a football field near the airport. Director general of civil aviation authority of Nepal (CAAN) Sanjiv Gautam told The Kathmandu Post that the plane was out of control when it tried to land on the runway. "The aircraft was permitted to land from the southern side of the runway over Koteshwor but it landed from the northern side," said Gautam, suspecting the aircraft might have sustained some technical glitches. He added that they were yet to ascertain the reason behind the crash. The aircraft had circled the airport twice as it waited for clearance to land, Mohammed

Key players in bank scams are from Gujarat: P Chidambaram

Bengaluru: Former Finance Minister P Chidambaram on Sunday hinted at the involvement of someone within the government in the recent Punjab National Bank scam worth Rs 11,000 crore. “I am sure the evidence will come out some day,” he said. Citing similarities in the recent bank fraud cases that has shocked the nation, he said that it was interesting to note that the scams happened in the jewellery sector and key players of these scams were from Gujarat. “It is not happening across other sectors. Obviously, at one level, people were assisted in the scam. Who helped or at what level they were helped, I have no evidence at all,” Chidambaram said. He was speaking during the Bengaluru launch of his book, ‘Speaking Truth To Power - My Alternate

View’, at Bishop Cotton Boys’ School, on Sunday. Non-performing assets (NPA) swelled from a little under ‘2 lakh crore in May 2014 to a little over `8 lakh crore in December 2017, due to the fact that performing loans became non-performing loans during the period, he said. Two sectors - Telecom and Power/Coal - have contributed to the NPAs more than others. This was due to ‘malicious twists’ given to Telecom and Coal policies of the UPA regime, due to which both sectors went ‘funk’, he said. Alleging that there was an insidious ploy to diminish public institutions, he said that minimum governance has caused maximum damage to the country. Criticising the lack of discussion in the Parliament, he said, “discourse has become coarse in the country.”

Nepalese rescuers stand near a passenger plane from Bangladesh that crashed at the airport in Kathmandu, Nepal, Monday

Selim, the airline's manager in Kathmandu, told Dhaka-based Somoy TV station over the telephone. A government spokesman was not able to give numbers but said both dead and injured had been pulled from the aircraft. Prime Minister KP Sharma Oli visited TIA to inquire about ongoing rescue operation and offered his condolences and assured an immediate probe. Oli said he was "extremely shocked" by the news of the crash. Plumes of

black smoke could be seen rising from the football pitch where the plane crashed, to the east of the runway at Nepal's only international airport, in the capital Kathmandu."Police and army are trying to cut apart the plane to rescue others," airport spokesman Prem Nath Thakur said. Live footage posted on Facebook showed the towering columns of smoke rising behind the runway, where another plane stood waiting on the tarmac. The

plane crashed as it was coming into land, sending firefighters scrambling to extinguish the burning wreckage and rescue survivors. Meanwhile, Mohammad Al Alamun Emam, head of the chancery of Bangladesh Embassy in Kathmandu said, "All we know is that this is a technical issue and we are in touch with rescue workers. All we know is that 17 people have been rescued." Emergency vehicles appeared to be heading into the smoke as people watched from a distance or filmed on their mobile phones. The plane was a 17-year-old Bombardier Dash 8 Q400 turboprop, said Swedish-based aircraft flight information service Flightradar24 on its Twitter account. According to TIA general manager Raj Kumar Chhetri, the plane crashed at 2:18 pm.

J&K Finance Minister Haseeb Drabu sacked after controversial Kashmir remark

Srinagar: Jammu and Kashmir Chief Minister Mehbooba Mufti on Monday sacked Finance Minister Haseeb Drabu from the cabinet for saying that Kashmir is ‘not a political issue’ – a statement that has set off a political firestorm across the state. The statement from the state finance minister had drawn sharp criticism not only from the opposition but also from leaders of Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), prompting the CM to sack him. Sources said that after a meeting between the CM, senior PDP leaders and legislators, a letter was sent to J&K Governor N N Vohra, informing him about the removal of Drabu on grounds of violation of party norms. While addressing an event themed ‘Kashmir: The Way Forward’ on March 9, Drabu had said that Kashmir is “not a political issue”, rather, it is a society with “social issues”. “Don’t see J&K as a conflict state and a political issue. It is a society which has social

issues right now. We are trying to find our own space and we are going through a process which many other countries are also going through,” he said. “It (J&K) is not a political issue as far as I can see. They have been barking up the wrong tree for the last 50 or 70 years by talking about the politics of it, that the political situation has never improved. We seriously need to look at in terms of how it is a society that is in search for itself,” he added. The minister’s statement came at a time when the PDP and its coalition partner, BJP, are at loggerheads over a range of issues, with CM Mufti openly pressing

for talks with Pakistan. After the comments were reported on Sunday, two other PDP ministers who had also addressed the event, distanced themselves from Drabu’s statements. The PDP has asked the finance minister to “retract his statement immediately”. PDP vice president Sartaj Madni said, “The party (PDP) recognises Jammu and Kashmir as a political issue, and ever since its emergence, the party has relentlessly been pursuing its resolution through reconciliation and dialogue, both at internal and external levels.” Drabu is considered to be close to the BJP leadership at the Centre.

New Delhi: After months of hand wringing, the Supreme Court has given the Gujarat government a last chance to file a status report on disciplinary action taken against police officers convicted in the 2002 Bilkis Bano gangrape case. Led by Chief Justice of India Dipak Misra, the Supreme Court bench has given the state six weeks’ time to file their reply. In November 2017, a bench comprising the CJI and Justices A.M. Khanwilkar and

D.Y, Chandrachud had considered a submission made by Additional Solicitor General Tushar Mehta, representing the state government, to give the state government six more weeks to furnish a reply. This wasn’t the first time that such an extension was made. The apex court had already granted time on October 23, 2017, to the state government to apprise it on whether any departmental action had been initiated against

police officers whose conviction was upheld in the Bilkis Bano gangrape case. On March 3, 2002, Bilkis, who was a 19-yearold girl at the time, fled her village along with her family in a truck as Muslim homes were targeted by Hindutva mobs in the riots. The truck was stopped by an armed mob of around 3035 rioters in Randhikpur village of Dahod district near Ahmedabad. The mob gangraped Bano, who was pregnant then,

Kisan rally: government agrees to demands, farmers withdraw protest

Mumbai: Around 15,000 farmers of the All Indian Kisan Sabha (AIKS), who set out on a protest march from Nashik last week, met a government panel at 2 p.m. on Monday. Irrigation Minister Girish Mahajan said the government has agreed to their demands. "The government has agreed on 100% demands, including transfer of land title," he said. The farmers have agreed to withdraw the protest, he said, adding that a special train has been arranged for them to return home. The 'kisan rally' which started from Mulund on Saturday night, reached Mumbai on Sunday. The farmers decided to march at night in order to avoid

causing inconvenience to public. The farmers intended to gherao the Vidhan Bhavan in Mumbai on Monday and voice their demands, which include a complete farm loan waiver, implementation of the recommendations of the M.S. Swaminathan Commission, providing forest rights and better compensation for land acquired by the government. All India congress committee general secretary Mohan Prakash said, "Since Modi has come to power, the

country's farmers have been the worst hit. It’s a double whammy in Maharashtra since there is a BJP government here as well. Farmers products prices have crashed but their raw material prices have surged. Rahul Gandhi has been fighting for farmers rights since Bhatta Parsaul and the entire Congress is with you." Ashok Chavan addresses the media: "Maharashtra has the highest suicide rate. The farmers walked all the way to have their problems resolved by the government and not just to talk. This is not a politically motivated rally but a real issue. I appeal to the government to take this seriously.”

Ghaziabad: In a shocking incident, a 38-year-old mother died of her injuries on Sunday, after her daughter brutally hit her with rods at their residence in Uttar Pradesh’s Ghaziabad March 9. According to police, the victim’s husband filed a complaint against her 18-year-old daughter and her female teacher at the Kavi Nagar police station. He said that his daughter was having a relationship with her teacher and planned to elope with her. A case has been registered against the 18-year-old and her 35-yearold teacher under IPC section

304, for culpable homicide not amounting to murder, a Hindustan Times report said. The victim’s husband, who runs a transport business in Ghaziabad, said his daughter attacked her mother on Friday when both were alone in their residence. “My daughter attacked my wife with sticks and rods, which led to severe injuries to her head. My daughter fled the spot and my wife was bleeding heavily when my younger daughter arrived from school. My daughter wanted to run away with her female teacher. Both were in a relationship for since over three months

and we had objected to it. We had no altercation for any other reason,” he said. After the younger daughter found her mother severely injured, she called the police and also took her mother to the hospital. The woman was later referred to a hospital in Delhi where she died of her injuries on Sunday. The father said his daughter is in an alleged relationship with her teacher, who has been separated from her husband and is living alone, and had run away with her around two months back. The family had to approach the police to bring her back.

New Delhi: The bill mandating confiscation of properties of fugitive economic offenders was tabled in the Lok Sabha on Monday. The Fugitive Economic Offenders Bill, 2018, was introduced by Minister of State for Finance Shiv Pratap Shukla amid protests by Opposition parties over the Punjab National Bank scam, worth over Rs 12000 crore, in which businessman Nirav Modi is allegedly involved. As per the explanatory note to the draft bill, “A Fugitive Economic Offender is a person who has an arrest warrant issued in respect of a scheduled offence and who leaves or has left India so as to avoid criminal

prosecution, or refuses to return to India to face criminal prosecution.” According to government officials, the bill would help in laying down measures to deter economic offenders from remaining outside the jurisdiction of Indian courts. Cases where the total value involved in such

offences is Rs 100 crore or more will come under the purview of the legislation. It seeks to provide “an effective, expeditious and constitutionally permissible deterrent to ensure” that offenders are booked with banks and other financial institutions achieving high recoveries.

and killed 14 of her family members including her two-year-old daughter and her mother Halima. It took many long years for Bano to finally get justice and she had to deal with years of harassment, which eventually forced the Supreme Court to

hand the case over to the CBI. It was only in 2004 that the CBI arrested 12 accused people and found the Gujarat police complicit in the cover-up of the horrific crime. On May 4, 2017, the Bombay high court had upheld the life imprisonment sentence of 11 accused in the case while setting aside the acquittal of seven people including policemen and doctors. In addition, the court set aside the acquittal of others accused in the case,

including Gujarat police officers and doctors from a government hospital. The court also directed each of the convicts to pay Rs 55,000, to go to Bilkis Bano as compensation. Bilkis Bano described this verdict as having “vindicated [her] truth and upheld [her] faith in the judiciary”. “I want justice, not revenge. I want my daughters to grow up in a safe India,” the gangrape survivor said after the high court’s decision.

Why India should worry about Xi Jinping’s continuation as China President

China’s parliament on Sunday ratified a historic constitutional amendment abolishing the two-term limit for President Xi Jinping, paving the way for his stay in the office of president—perhaps for life. News reports from Beijing said Xi, 64, was set to begin his second five-year term as president of China this month. He is seen as the most powerful Chinese leader in recent decades, heading the ruling Communist Party of China (CPC) and the military. The amendment removing term limits for the president and the vice-president was approved by the National People’s Congress in Beijing. It has effectively ended the collective leadership system followed by the CPC to avert a dictatorship emerging in an otherwise one-party state. Interestingly, the development comes at a time when India is seemingly making efforts to stabilize its ties with China—rocked last year by the Dokalam standoff and other issues previously. Foreign secretary Vijay Gokhale has reportedly written a letter advising Indian leaders and officials to stay away from functions being organized to mark the 60th anniversary of the Tibetan spiritual leader Dalai Lama’s flight to India, following a failed uprising against Chinese rule in Tibet in 1959. India’s concerns: A limitless tenure for Xi has spawned concerns across the world. For India, Xi’s continuation in office beyond a decade is particularly worrisome, say analysts. For starters, India-China ties have not been on an even keel with Beijing since Xi Jinping and Li Keqiang came to power replacing Hu Jintao and Wen Jiabao, respectively, in 2013, though both made early visits to India. One of the key things to watch for is whether Xi will retain the mantles of Communist Party general secretary and head of the powerful Central Military Commission that controls the People Liberation Army beyond 2023. “Presidents and vice presidents are titular heads in China. The real power rests in the hands of the general secretary and or the chairman of the Central Military Commission,” said Srikanth Kondapalli, a professor of Chinese studies at New Delhi-based Jawaharlal Nehru University. According to former foreign secretary Kanwal Sibal, “Xi has said that by 2035, he intends to make China a first rate military power capable of winning wars. He has also said that by 2049, he wants to see China at the centre stage of international relations.” This could mean “pressure on India—in its periphery, in the region and beyond”, he said. Border issues: India and China fought a brief but bloody border war in 1962 that went badly for India. The two now share an unsettled border. Last year, the armies of the two countries faced off in Dokalam, in Bhutan for 73 days—seen as a consequence of their common boundary being un-demarcated. Twenty rounds of talks since 2003 by special representatives of both sides have not yielded any breakthroughs so far on the subject. With a stronger Xi in power, analysts say there would be less chances of a China giving India any concessions - Kapilkumar M. Hirpara on the boundary dispute. Editor

Bollywood-Hollywood Deepika Padukone works this sculpted gown like the powerful diva she is Mumbai: That Deepika

Padukone has worked to create a fierce fashionista image over the past two years, is not unknown, but this look at the recently held Hello Awards ceremony in Mumbai on March 11, is a class apart. Wearing a custom sculpted gown by Falguni and Shane Peacock, Padukone owned the red carpet with the way she looked. Seemingly taking inspiration from fellow fashionista Sonam Kapoor, Padukone’s choice of a gown with a voluminous shoulder is laudable and la mode. Fierce and sensuous at the same time, the floor-length gown had

a plunging neckline, metallic belt to cinch the waist and a small train. The dramatic element, though, was the voluminous sleeve that can be called a cross between the ‘leg of mutton’ (apparently that’s a sleeve!) and a bishop’s sleeve. Kudos to stylist Shaleena Nathani for choosing this gorgeous piece for the event. Nathani let the outfit do the talking by opting for bare minimum jewellery in the form of rings from Tanishq. Anil C did a fabulous job with the make-up as well, accentuating Padukone’s cheekbones and dark smokey eyes

added that mystery and allure to complement the gown. If there’s one complaint, then that would be in the hairstyle. Though the signature sleek bun by Gabriel Georgiou worked well with the overall outfit, we would have liked a bit of variation. With this gown, Padukone seems to be playing in with the sleeves variation that yet another contemporary has been sporting of late – Sonam Kapoor. Over the past couple of weeks, we’ve seen Kapoor sport a variety of balloon and flared sleeves. Once, during PadMan promotions, she wore a white shirt

Janhvi Kapoor has been professional, brave, amazing: Dhadak team on her returning to work

Mumbai: The past month has been a hard one, for the Kapoor family, as they are still grappling with the loss of Sridevi. The actress passed away on February 24 in Dubai. She had gone to attend actor Mohit Marwah's wedding, with husband Boney Kapoor and daughter Khushi. Janhvi wasn't able to make it, as she was busy shooting for Dhadak. A state funeral was held for Sridevi on February 28, and thousands of fans and celebrities came to pay their last respects. Since then, members of the film fraternity have been visiting Sridevi's residence in Mumbai, to offer their condolences. Boney Kapoor wrote a post on Twitter, expressing his gratitude at everyone's support. He also said that his only concern now were his daughters, Janhvi and Khushi. However, much to everyone's admiration, Janhvi has returned to work, after the demise. The young star was back at work, last Thursday, and the entire Dhadak team is in awe. Some members of the team told SpotBoyE, that she was "professional, brave and amazing." A source said, "It was not easy for Janhvi to even think that she would start facing

the camera, memorise the lines and give apt shots so soon after her mother's death. Full marks to her for giving justice to her assignment so that the

producer (Karan Johar) is not hard-pressed." Dhadak is a remake of the Marathi hit, Sairat. The film, also stars Ishaan Khatter, and will hit the screens in July.

Mumbai: Veteran actress Sridevi’s death came as a big shock for everybody. The lady died of accidental drowning in Dubai. Recently, her uncle Venugopal Reddy revealed to a Telugu channel that the late actress was worried due to her husband Boney Kapoor’s financial instability. Sridevi’s sister Srilatha, who was not even present at the prayer meet of the actress, continued to be tight-lipped. However, her husband Sanjay Ramaswami has broken silence and refuted all the claims of Venugopal Reddy. He stated that the whatever claims Reddy has made are not true and the entire family is in support of Boney during his tough time. According to a Sanjay’s statement reads, “I have been married to Srilatha (Sridevi's sister) for 28 years and never once have we heard

of this individual Venugopal Reddy. The family is in grief and chooses to not make any comments through this painful time. There is no truth to this man's claims and the entire family is in support of Boney Kapoor and are with him through this challenging phase. Some sections of the media questioned my wife's silence and attributed all kinds of ridiculous allegations. I am sure that they have loved

ones that they lost. Did they stand up on the wall and shout. We mourn in silence and do not seek any publicity and that should not be misconstrued. We are a very close-knit family. Sridevi was an inspiration to all of us and all in the family loved her very much.” Earlier, Sridevi’s uncle revealed that due to Boney’s financial instability, the actress had to sell her property to make up for the losses.

Sridevi death: After Venugopal Reddy’s claims, Srilatha's husband breaks silence

with butterfly sleeves over the regular fullsleeves. This not only gave a voluminous look to the actor but also gave out a fiercely powerful vibe. This airport look has her sporting a high and low top, which had balloon sleeves that added a regal look to her attire. And then, of course, there were the balloon sleeves that the Veere Di Wedding actor flaunted which looked super chic, other than giving slight Johnny Bravo vibes, but then, we secretly loved his audacity too. It seems these women are using the voluminous sleeves as an element of powerdressing.

Virat Kohli Will Win T20I and ODI World Cup by 2025; Break Sachin's Record, Predicts Astrologer

New Delhi: Virat Kohli will continue to set benchmark in 2018, striking an endorsement deal unheard of in the history of Indian sports and international cricket, apart from breaking a plethora of records, predicts a renowned astrologer. Narendra Bunde, a resident of Nagpur and a 'cricket astrologer' by profession, had "foretold" last year that Mahendra Singh Dhoni, now 36, would be playing in the 2019 World Cup in England, at a time when many questioned his place in the limited overs game. Now, he predicts Kohli will win the T20 World Cup, ODI World Cup and break Sachin Tendulkar's record of 100 international centuries by 2025. "All my past predictions had

been correct. I can see Virat winning the T20 and ODI World Cup by 2025 and also break Sachin's record," Bunde said. "Besides, he will also strike the biggest ever endorsement deal in cricket in 2018. You can somewhat compare this with Tendulkar's record signing with Mark Mascarenhas' Worldtel but the money involved will be obviously bigger today." In the 1990s when Tendulkar was going great guns, Mascarenhas changed the game of celebrity management and turned the cricket icon into a multi-millionaire. Having got his predictions right about Tendulkar's comeback from tennis elbow injury, his Bharat Ratna honour, Sourav Ganguly's comeback,

Teaching, study material and option of appearing in the examinations in higher education in all faculties including the technical and medical should be available in Bharatiya languages too. 3. It is a welcome initiative that the National Eligibility cum Entrance Test (NEET) and examinations being conducted by the Union Public Service Commission have now been started in Bharatiya languages. Along with this, the same option should be available for all other entrance tests and competitive examinations still not being conducted in Bharatiya languages. 4. Preference should be given

PSL 2018: Shaheen Shah Afridi produces fairytale performance as battle for play-off heats up

RSS Akhil Bharatiya Pratinidhi Sabha 9, 10, 11 March, 2018–Nagpur Ahmedabad: PraitinidhiSabha is of the view that language is an important constituent of identity and active vehicle of the culture of any individual and society. The languages and dialects, prevalent in the country are most essential to protect our culture, noble traditions, excellent knowledge and vast literature as well as to promote creative thinking. The oral tradition of knowledge in the form of songs, idioms and folklores etc in various languages is many times more than the written literature. The declining trend in the practice and usage of Bharatiya languages, elimination of their words and replacement by words of foreign languages are emerging as a serious challenge. Today, many languages and dialects have become extinct and several other are endangered. ABPS is of the opinion that the governments, other policymakers and the society, including the voluntary organizations should endeavour to undertake all kinds of efforts to protect and promote various languages and dialects of

to Bharatiya languages in all governmental and judicial works. In addition to this, Bharatiya languages should be encouraged in Governmental and non governmental appointments, promotions and all kinds of functions instead of giving preference to English. 5. Central and State governments should take effective steps to protect and promote all the languages, dialects and scripts of Bharat. ABPS is in favour of learning various languages of the world to acquire diverse knowledge. But, in a multilingual country like Bharat ABPS considers it most necessary to protect and promote all the languages of Bharat as the carrier of our culture. ABPS calls upon the society including the governments, voluntary organizations, media, religious organizations, educational institutions and intelligentia to make every possible effort to promote the use of Bharatiya languages and ascertain purity of their grammar, usage of words and the scripts.

Supreme Court to auction unencumbered assets of Unitech to refund homebuyers New Delhi: In what could be another cause of worry for the beleaguered real estate developer Unitech Limited, the Supreme Court on Monday said that it will auction unencumbered assets of the embattled realty major. The apex court today sought details of all unencumbered assets of Unitech. Coming as a relief for Unitech homebuyers, the Supreme Court said the auctioned assets will be used to refund money to home buyers. A bench headed by Chief Justice Dipak Misra also imposed a cost of Rs 25 lakh on JM Financial Asset Reconstruction Company, which had taken over some loans advanced by HDFC Bank to Unitech Limited. The bench, also comprising Justices A M Khanwilkar and D Y Chandrachud, said that the asset reconstruction company had given the impression that it would pay the money for refund to home buyers and now the entire proceeding had been diverted. "We treat it as an unnecessary diversion form the main case," the bench said while imposing the cost. The bench asked the real estate company to file the details of its unencumbered assets and made it clear that

GST mop-up: Govt now suspects under-reporting of Rs 34,000 crore for July-December 2017 New Delhi: A preliminary analysis of Goods and Services Tax (GST) returns filed between July and December 2017 shows that the scale of under-reporting of tax liabilities could be as high as Rs 34,000 crore, according to a media report. The matter, according to a Times of India report, was flagged last week at a meeting of the GST Council. Authorities may now issue notices to traders and businessmen who have shown different liabilities in GSTR-1, which is largely used for information purposes, and GSTR-3B. The focus will be on those who have shown a wide variance in the two filings. Details of suspects could be shared with states for action, the report said. Tax consultants, however, opine that there could be sound reasons for variations in the two returns, because at the time of payment of taxes, input tax credit accumulated over months is used, along with the current periods. By contrast, the aforementioned details are not provided when

submitting GSTR-1, which is a sales register where invoice details are entered. Furthermore, the Centre also fears under-reporting of the value of imported goods. Data examined by customs authorities shows that in several instances, the value of imported products was shown to be lower, which authorities suspect was done to pay a lower GST at every stage of the sale process, the report added. The absence of fixed targets and frequent revisions in GST rates has impacted the stability of the new tax regime and has adversely impacted trade and

businesses, a Parliamentary panel observed in a report last week. "The Committee are constrained to observe the not-so-encouraging monthly revenue collections from GST, which still have not stabilised with frequent changes in rates and issue of notifications every now and then. Further, the Committee are surprised to learn that no GST revenue targets have been fixed by the government," the Standing Committee on Finance headed by Congress member M Veerappa Moily said in its report tabled in Parliament on 10 March.
