STEIBS/COHEN BUYING EVENT

This past week, South Florida’s community came together in Dania Beach to honor National Pregnancy and Infant Loss Awareness Month, a period recognizing the trauma experienced by many families and the struggle to move forward amidst darkness. Led by Dr. Marline C. Duroseau and held at the Paul DeMaio Library, the 2nd annual ‘You Are My Angel Maternal Wellness Event’ welcomed grieving parents to tell their stories and share the legacies of their lost angels, as well as spotlighted powerful community leaders to provide resources and hope to attendees.

“I am absolutely in awe at the support our event received, and I could not be more grateful for all involved,” said Dr. Marline C. Duroseau. “This day was a true labor of love, one that transformed heartwrenching experiences into an opportunity for growth and inspiration.”

Duroseau was motivated to launch the annual event following her own experiences with infant loss after struggling with infertility for 10 years, she gave birth to a daughter named Angel Grace who tragically passed away after only a few days. Wracked with grief as well as love, Duroseau set out to create a safe space for all parents who struggled with the same pain, opening the door for unmatched connection and support.

The day opened with a moment of silence before segueing into an array of experienced key speakers and guests, including:

• Andrew Rader, Rader Law Group Founder, a pioneering IVF Litigation Attorney whose groundbreaking work helped Florida become one of the first states to recognize emotional damages for the negligent destruction of embryos.

• Clayton Anderson, Chairman of the SHINE with Joy Foundation dedicated to advocating for maternal health

Fall Fun In Miami

This November, InterContinental Miami invites visitors to fall into Autumn fun with a vibrant lineup of exciting activities and memorable moments throughout the month.

Phyllis Lazarow

Hallandale Beach lost one of its brightest lights with the passing of Phyllis Lazarow, the trailblazing owner of Phyllis Lazarow Salon, a beloved local landmark for more than 25 years.

Born in the Bronx in 1931, Phyllis began her career as a singing comedienne, entertaining audiences throughout New York and the famed Catskills resort circuit - better known as the Borscht Belt. During that time, she shared stages with some of the greats - Sammy Davis Jr., Alan King, Buddy Hackett, and Henny Youngman - holding her own among comedy legends with her sharp wit, fearless timing, and radiant charm. She loved the stage, but even more, she loved people.

When she eventually traded show business for small business, she brought the same charisma and confidence to Hallandale Beach. Opening Phyllis Lazarow Salon was less a career change than a venue change - she simply swapped a spotlight for salon lights. Though she never touched a head of hair,

she became the most famous salon owner in town. Phyllis’s secret? She knew beauty wasn’t just about how you looked - it was about how you felt.

For over two decades, she transformed a simple beauty salon into a stage filled with laughter, music, and warmth. Regulars came for their weekly appointments and left with their spirits lifted. Husbands who once waited in the car quickly learned to come inside - not for the gossip, but to hear Phyllis tell a joke, sing a song, or deliver a one-liner worthy of a comedy club.

Her humor was legendary, her kindness genuine, and her ability to connect with people unmatched. Phyllis had a way of making everyone feel like the star of the show - even when she was clearly the headliner.

Her daughter, Michele, followed in her entrepreneurial footsteps as the owner of Absolutely Fabulous, another Hallandale Beach favorite. And just like her mother, Michele couldn’t go anywhere without hearing, “Are you Phyllis’ daughter?” She even

considered changing the name of her store from Absolutely Fabulous to Phyllis Lazarow’s Daughter.

Later, when Michele ran for City Commission in 2012, knocking on doors across the city, the same question followed - only this time, it came with instant support: “Are you Phyllis’ daughter? You’ve got my vote.”

Michele proudly credits her mother’s reputation, warmth, and connection to the community for helping her win that first citywide election. Thirteen years later, she serves as the city’s Vice Mayorproof that Phyllis’s legacy of humor, heart, and hometown love lives on.

Beyond the salon, Phyllis was a proud mother, devoted friend, community pillar and a loving wife. She believed life was meant to be lived out loud - preferably with good company, good stories, and a little lipstick.

Phyllis will be remembered for her laughter, her love, and her gift for turning ordinary moments into memories that still make us smile.

Hollywood Art And Culture Center Expansion Grand Opening And Ribbon Cutting Set For Sunday, November 2nd At 12:00

Hollywood Art and Culture Center, celebrating its 50th Anniversary, will unveil the addition of the Hollywood Arts Hub to its historic Kagey Home Main Campus with a grand opening ribbon cutting set for noon on Sunday, November 2nd –exactly 50 years from The Center’s opening in 1975 – with local dignitaries. The public is invited to attend the special event and enjoy complimentary tours, performances, artmaking and more in the new arts education wing.

“The Hollywood Arts Hub has been a labor of love for many people for over a decade from planning to inception. Our Center team is honored to be the stewards to help people connect, create and communicate through art and cultural experiences,” said Jennifer Homan, Executive Director of the Hollywood Art and Culture Center. “As we celebrate 50 years of bringing bold exhibitions, education programs and accessible cultural experiences to our region, we’re excited to usher in a new era for the arts in Hollywood.”

The new Hollywood Arts Hub now holds the unique architectural distinction in Broward County of having adjoining, functional spaces built 101 years apart. It includes a 110-seat Arts Auditorium, the Create More Art Studio, a Digital Media Lab with multimedia studio classrooms, the outdoor Imagine Courtyard, a multipurpose room for dance, drama, artist talks, film screenings, meeting space and more. This building will be a visual landmark in Downtown Hollywood drawing residents and visitors to The Center.

The distinctly dramatic and contemporary design by award winning architectural firm, Brooks + Scarpa merges with the existing two-story, historic 1924 Mediterranean Revival architecture of the Kagey Home, which houses The Center galleries and administrative offices.

Construction of the Arts Hub was funded by the City of Hollywood through dedicated funding from the 2019 General

NFL Chooses Hollywood To Kick Off National PAL Flag Football Partnership

More than 100 local kids helped launch a partnership between NFL FLAG, the league’s flag football initiative, and the National Police Athletic/Activities League that the organizations plan to expand across the nation.

Flag football is now the fastest-growing youth sport in the country and will be a new sport at the Los Angeles Olympic Games in 2028. National PAL and the NFL sealed an agreement this month that will open NFL FLAG to the 300 PAL chapters across the country.

Monday night’s kickoff in Hollywood is the start of a broad project, according to National PAL Vice President Dr. Galen Duncan.

“We want to take football and all sports and make them national events,” Dr. Duncan said. “This is an opportunity to combine with a huge sports organization like the NFL, to make this thing as big as we can and do some really nice things for young people.”

Police Athletic/Activities League chapters work to build stronger communities and prevent crime through police mentorship of local youth.

“What brings these kids in here is the NFL FLAG portion of it,” said Officer Patrick Agenor, who runs the Hollywood program. “Keep the kids off the street, and then we can actually direct them to our tutoring program and academics.”

Flag football is more accessible to boys and girls of all ages and body sizes than is tackle football.

“For young kids who are not looking for the physicality and want to learn how to play football, this is perfect,” Dr. Duncan

Obligation Bond that was approved by City voters in a special election. The Pirtle Construction team broke ground on April 30th, 2024 and will meet the opening deadline as planned.

“The City of Hollywood proudly supports art and culture in our city, and this expansion of The Center is a tremendous milestone,” said Mayor Josh Levy of the City of Hollywood. “People of all ages and backgrounds can experience the arts at this new venue year-round, adding to the number of amazing experiences that can be found in Hollywood.”

• Homeschool Programs – new offerings designed for flexible learning through STEAM integration

Create More Art Nights

Also in November, the Center will launch Create More Art Nights every Thursday from 5:30 p.m. to 8:00 p.m. designed to spark creativity, wellness and community connection. Each week brings a new theme and a mix of activities.

We’ve both come a long way.”

A Taste Of District 8

Ceviche Avenue have also called the area home for some years.

Within only 4 weeks they put together a showcase of our District 8 business partners. Over the past years, we have been keenly focused on redevelopment of Northeast 1st Avenue. 25 years ago, this section of the City was once the area for shopping. Before malls and larger shopping centers many of our residents and visitors flocked to the Corridor for the newest fashion, furniture and the famous Nick’s Diner. Once Aventura Mall opened many visitors and locals began shopping and dining there. The competition of big box stores slowly eroded the charm and attraction of the area. Many of the staples remained for years. The longest standing store has been Wasser’s Furniture. The Family business is now being run by the brother and daughter team and still is one of the top suppliers of custom furnishings. Lorraine’s Perfumes, another staple, is still a wonderful place to pick up your favorites. Jo-Lene Upholstery Shop and

Hollywood Arts Hub Ribbon Cutting Sunday, November 2nd

A new era for the arts in Downtown Hollywood is about to begin. On Sunday, November 2nd, the community will gather for the official ribbon cutting of the new Hollywood Art and Culture Center Arts Hub, located at 1650 Harrison Street, Hollywood, Florida 33020. The celebration takes place from 12:00 p.m. Noon to 4:00 p.m. and will feature performances, art making, film screenings, gallery tours, and a first look at the Center’s 2025–2026 programs and events.

Visitors will explore a vibrant new complex that includes the Arts Auditorium, Digital Media Lab, Create More Art Studio and Imagine Courtyard. These additions were made possible through the 2019 City of Hollywood General Obligation Bond approved by residents.

The event marks the completion of the expanded Art and Culture Center and celebrates 50 years of creative impact in Hollywood. The project was managed by the City of Hollywood’s Department of Design and Construction Management and includes a multipurpose room, visual arts classroom, distance learning broadcast studio, and a meeting and reception space designed to foster creativity and collaboration.

Blending the character of the original building with a bold, modern design, the renovated Center reflects Hollywood’s growth and artistic spirit. The sweeping architecture stands as a symbol of the City’s continued investment in creativity, culture and community.

Jamaica Hurricane Relief Effort

The City of Hollywood has organized a Hurricane Relief Effort for the people of Jamaica who have been impacted by Hurricane Melissa. Through Friday, November 7th, the City’s Fire Rescue Stations will be accepting donations. For more information and a list of suggested items, visit: www.hollywoodfl.org.

For the past years, we have been reinventing the area. First, it was the Fashion, Art and Design District FADD. The vision was to create something similar to Miami Design District. We convinced the concessionaire of Ice Box to stay in our City and they developed a new restaurant commissary on 3rd Street. The COVID-19 Pandemic hit and many businesses, including theirs struggled. We helped businesses with rental assistance and other grants to stay afloat.

While this started some energy we needed to refocus and create our own vision in partnership with all the owners. District 8 became a new brand. Our CRA has partnered with new and upcoming restaurants including KAO and Verde. We also recently attracted many small businesses including Pepe’n Rony, Mercado Art Studio, La Estacion Coffee Shop and Dance Olympus. There are also other new businesses poised to open in the coming month.

The District 8 Streetscape Improvements Project began on Monday, October

27th, 2025 along Northeast 1st Avenue. We’re looking forward to this transformation and what it will bring to our community!

The project features: On Street Parking: Additional parking opportunities to support local businesses and improve access for visitors. Enhanced Safety: Modified curb, pedestrian lighting and hardscape designs for crosswalks to improve walkability. Aesthetic Upgrades: Attractive landscaping and site furnishings to create a more inviting streetscape. Cultural Value: Public art opportunities to celebrate the district and overall soul of the city. All District 8 businesses will continue operating while work is taking place, so please stop by and support them. Now anyone that has been down 1st Avenue knows that the entire street needs a facelift. We approved a major redesign between Hallandale Beach Boulevard and 3rd. In order not to lose momentum during the construction, I requested that we not hold off with a block party that both Vice Mayor Lazarow and I have been asking for. We directed staff to put the party together to highlight the area before they

started the construction and staff delivered.

Over the next year and half, the street will be under construction. During the construction residents and visitors will still be able to access all the business and restaurants. There are two parking lots. One is located on 3rd Street and the other right on 1st, north of 3rd. As shuttles will be running from the lots to each location. In addition to parking and shuttles, anyone living in Hallandale Beach can apply online for a $10 dollar Uber voucher and leave the driving to us.

Many residents asked about KAO which was closed for renovations in preparation for the season. There will also be a new brewery opening and new open air lounge concept on the corner of 3rd and 1st.

As always, I am available anytime for your questions, concerns, and ideas to make our city a better place on my Phone/Text at: (954) 632-5700. Or you can email me at: jcooper@cohb.org. Please visit me on my Facebook page at: Mayor Joy Cooper. Like! Follow! And share!

“The Growth And History Of The Broward County Sheriff’s Office,”

An Insightful New Exhibit, Now Open At History Fort Lauderdale

History Fort Lauderdale, proud steward of our community’s past by making our heritage accessible and engaging to residents and visitors, recently celebrated the opening of its newest exhibit, “The Growth and History of the Broward County Sheriff’s Office,” with a special public preview, opening reception and book signing. This insightful exhibition takes a close look at the department’s progress over the years, from 1915 to the present, while also highlighting the sometimes-scandalous history that has shaped its story. The exhibit features images and narratives from the department’s origins to the prohibition era, organized crime, gambling and outlaws, to mid-century racial tensions and finally, the expansion, modernization, and professionalism of today.

As part of the opening festivities guests had a chance to meet Joe Williams, a decorated BSO Deputy Sheriff, author, and major contributor of artifacts and photographs to the new exhibit. Willams graciously signed copies of his latest novel, Unearthed, which captures the dark history of Broward County in the 1940s.

“History Fort Lauderdale is honored to continue sharing the stories about the development of our beloved city and county which includes people, places and organizations like the Broward Sheriff’s Office,” said Patricia Zeiler, Executive Director of History Fort Lauderdale. “This exhibit provides a rare glimpse into the organization’s impressive growth and development and how it has evolved to serve the community today.”

“The Growth and History of the Broward County Sheriff’s Office” is funded, in part, by the Broward County Board of County Commissioners as recommended by the Broward County Cultural Council and Visit Lauderdale.

History Fort Lauderdale hosts a variety of engaging multicultural experiences, year-round. It seeks to bring awareness to the community through both traveling exhibits and multiple permanent exhibits including “Women Trailblazers,” “Fort Lauderdale – the Early Years,” “Roots of Resilience: The Journey of Black Broward,” “From Dugouts to Dream Yachts: the story of boatbuilding along the New River,” Seminole Arts & Culture,” “New River Archaeology,” “Viva Fort Lauderdale: Celebrating Hispanic Art & Culture,” and “Take PRIDE, a retrospective on LGBTQ life in South Florida.”

History Fort Lauderdale is open seven days a week from 10:00 a.m. - 4:00 p.m. with docent guided tours, daily, at 1:00 p.m., 2:00 p.m. and 3:00 p.m. Group walking tours are available upon special request. Keeping Pets Safe At Halloween:

A Veterinarian’s Advice

When the leaves begin to turn colors and pumpkins begin appearing on neigh borhood porches, you know that Halloween is just around the corner. While spooky season is a fun time of the year for many people, it can also become a little too scary for pets if owners don’t take precautions.

Dr. Erin Ray, a clinical assistant profes sor at the Texas A&M College of Veterinary Medicine & Biomedical Sciences (VMBS), and Dr. Lori Teller, a VMBS clinical professor, share their veteri nary advice for keeping pets safe at Halloween to help pet owners best cele brate the spooky season with their furry friends.

Halloween Food Safety For Pets

One of the most iconic parts of Halloween is the food, including candy and party snacks like popcorn balls and caramel-covered apples. Because these foods are abundant at this time of year, pet owners should pay close attention to what treats their animals indulge in.

“It is vital to be careful with any candy and food that could be potentially toxic for your pet to ingest throughout this holiday season,” Ray said.

Common ingredients that are harmful for pets include:

• Chocolate

• Onion

• Garlic

• Xylitol (an artificial sweetener)

• Any fatty or rich food

“Pet treats are a fun thing to give to pets, as long as they aren’t too rich, don’t contain toxic ingredients, can’t pose a choking hazard, or aren’t too hard,” Ray said.

If you find yourself in a situation where your pet has consumed something potentially detrimental to their health, The ASPCA’s Animal Poison Control can be reached at: (888) 426-4435 and the Pet Poison Helpline can be reached at: (855) 764-7661.

Alternatives To Offering Treats

If you’re concerned about the contents of pet treats, another way to celebrate Halloween while keeping your pet safe is by investing in a new toy.

“Toys that can’t be ripped apart, broken into pieces, or have pieces taken off of them are a great thing to give your furry

friend during the holidays, with owner supervision,” Ray said. “This is particularly true for string toys for cats.”

Helping Pets Cope With Crowds And Noises

Visiting haunted houses and watching horror movies may be how some Halloween enthusiasts enjoy celebrating the season, but pets don’t always share their owners’ affinity for the frightening.

“Pets can exhibit signs of fear in new, crowded, or loud situations, which would include places like haunted houses, hay mazes, and even loud movies in their normal home,” Ray said. “They can often mirror their owner’s emotions, too, so if an owner is scared, nervous, or anxious, the pet can show similar signs.”

Ways that pets exhibit fear and anxiety can include:

• Ears back and tail tucked

• Dilated pupils

• Hiding/cowering

• Trying to run away

• Hair on back/tail erect

Dogs may also show fear by barking or biting, while cats may hiss or swat.

Is Trick-Or-Treating Safe For Pets?

Whether your pet should accompany you out for a night of trick-or-treating is largely dependent on their personality and

how familiar they are with the activity.

Even if you intend to stay at home for the night, Ray encourages owners to make sure to consider your pet’s comfort when making your Halloween plans.

“Parties and trick-or-treating can be fun for some animals, such as wellsocialized dogs or cats who enjoy the attention, but these activities can be stressful for others because of the scary shapes and sounds, like the doorbell ringing,” Ray said. “Costumes can also scare pets if they are big, elaborate, or not something that the animal has seen before.” With this in mind, Ray strongly recommends that pet owners take caution during parties where a pet could come across unsuspecting threats. If people are visiting, it’s also important to communicate which treats can and cannot be shared with pets. “A trial run with a small group of friends can be a good way to assess how your pet will respond to other people, and start getting them familiar with parties and festivities,” Ray said.

Dealing With Halloween Decorations

Just as some people prefer to celebrate the season with harvest imagery and others lean into the spooky side, pets’ love of Halloween decorations can be personality-dependent.

“Many animals do not appreciate large, new decorations that could scare them or

make them nervous, while others may enjoy playing with them or trying to chew them,” Ray said. “Any decorative items lying around that could be chewed on or swallowed have the opportunity to become foreign body risks.”

Are Pumpkins Safe For Pets?

In general, pumpkin can be an excellent treat for cats and dogs because it is both tasty and low in calories, making it a healthy alternative to traditional treats.

“Pumpkins are roughly 90% water, so they can be filling for a pet without increasing their caloric intake, which is beneficial for overweight or obese pets,” Teller said.

Letting pets munch on the insides of a fresh pumpkin, can provide other health benefits, specifically by providing fiber that can ease digestive issues, but only if eaten in conservative amounts.

“Because the seeds or the fibrous strands are very high in fiber, eating too much can cause stomach upset,” Teller said. “When owners let their pet eat pumpkin, they should think of it like they are feeding their pet treats — treats should make up less than 10% of their total caloric intake.”

Halloween is a time for candy, laughs, and a scare or two. With some simple adjustments, it can be a fun holiday for the entire family.
