People’s Attitude Towards The COVID-19 Pandemic 28% in the study believe that taking precautions can protect them to some degree, but for the most part, it’s about being at the wrong place at the wrong time. #COVIDIOTS aside, recent statistics released by PsychTests.com reveal that the majority of people are taking the pandemic seriously, and are cautiously optimistic about the future.

The COVID-19 pandemic has brought out the best, and in a few cases, the worst, in people.

There are helpers and there are hoarders. There are philanthropists and there are profiteers.

There are people who are cautious, and people who are careless. In spite of the fallout of the pandemic, there are some silver linings, according to recent statistics released by PsychTests.com, based on data collected from their free Pandemic Resilience Test. Not withstanding the economic downturn, rising unemployment rates, obsessive hand-washing, and the need for isolation and social distancing, people are striving to be conscientious, compassionate, and hopeful.

There’s an old joke about eating Chinese food that says after you’ve had a big meal, you’re hungry again a half hour later.

That may be true for us but probably also for them too because the foods they have an insatiable appetite for can literally kill you. Iguanas, koala bears, pelicans, dogs, cats and especially bats. Eating bats is literally batshit crazy and harvesting bat guano (excrement) to diddle around with the viruses in their feces is probably what has put us in the two-month Corona lockdown and corresponding economic meltdown we’ve been suffering from. COVID-19 is far from the first time we’ve taken a lethal hit from China.

The 20th Century saw three flu pandemics (aside from regular, seasonal flus) originating from China. Some suspect that the 1917-1918 pandemic originated here although this can’t be conclusively proven. However, the origin of the 1957-58 pandemic was most definitely from East Asia. It killed as many as 116,000 in the US out of a population 174.9 million, or nearly half the size of the today’s US population of roughly 330 million, so the

City of Hallandale Beach Begins First Phase of Reopening The City of Hallandale Beach has begun to reopen slowly and carefully and has implemented a new emergency order that allows for limited activities at designated parks in Hallandale Beach. The parks will have opened to public access on a limited basis commencing on April 30, 2020. Designated Parks are Joseph Scavo Park, BF James Park, Foster Park, Foster Park Plaza, Ingalls Park, Peter Bluesten Park, Hallandale Cemetery (family visitations only) and shall be used only for passive use such as walking and jogging. In addition, the opening

and use of pools and/or pool decks may open at the discretion of multifamily housing developments, condominium developments, condominium hotels, and single-family homeowner associations. All other recreational common areas, such as gyms, hot tubs, and sauna rooms, are required to be closed until further notice. Syndrome From Page 1A proportion of those who were made ill and who perished was higher compared to today’s COVID-19. The country did not shut down even though the mortality rate was 10-times that of the 2009 Swine Flu. I vividly recall the 1968-69 Hong Kong Flu. It hit the US in the Fall of 1968 and circulated for nearly two years. The CDC says it was an “avian influenza A virus, (H3N2)” and that killed about 100,000 in the US and a million worldwide. The US population was then 200.7 million. I was 10 in 1968 and my whole family was down with it – both my parents, myself and my younger brother. Things were so bad at home that my maternal grandmother came out to care for us. Most of the fatalities, then as now with Covid-19 were comprised of people over 65. This flu is still around today and has never been cured, just contained.

The country didn’t close down even though millions were infected and made sick by it.

In 2009, we had the Swine Flu which was projected to be enormously fatal but ended up burning out earlier than expected. A vaccine was only available after the disease had peaked. From April 12, 2009 to April 10, 2010,

CDC estimated there were 60.8 million cases, 274,304 hospitalizations and 12,469 deaths in the United States due to the (H1N1)pdm09 virus. The country did not shut down even though nearly 61 million Americans got sick from it.

Even though none of the aforementioned Asian flu pandemics of the 20th Century killed millions in the US by any stretch of the imagination, US health professionals opted to latch on to hysterical computer models generated in England that estimated 2.2 million people would die here without a national quarantine and lockdown. It was somehow OK for 60 million to get sick from Swine Flu with no media hysterics, but not OK for millions to contract COVID-19.

Why was that?

Given decades of history on pulmonary and respiratory pandemics and how they were handled here, what was the model our medical, media and political class decided to adopt? Why the Chinese model, of course. Never mind that Chinese infection numbers and information couldn’t be verified and were lied about.

Never mind that China, as a totalitarian Communist dictatorship (Communism is self-defined as the “Dictatorship of the Proletariat.”) can forcibly hermetically seal a city of 11 million (Wuhan) with nary a peep of

opposition or information leakage from the people; never mind that China has an extensive history of self-serving deceit and boldfaced deception both at home and abroad, never mind that the Chinese Communist Party would be delighted to see the entire economy of The West crippled or destroyed.

Why use tried and true Western models of disease management when we can ape the bat-loving Chinese? Could it be about power? Power is intoxicating and there’s the old adage that “absolute power corrupts absolutely.” Who is power hungry? Let’s start with many scientists who have gotten drunk on being celebrated and venerated on television and online 24/7.

Revenge of the nerds here? Then there are the politicians. No politician wants to be held responsible on election day for two million or even 100,000 deaths, so even though there wasn’t a shred of proof that locking down the country would kill the pandemic, they went that route anyway.

Then, once in place, it has morphed from “flattening the curve” of an anticipated spike in hospitalizations which might overwhelm the health system to becoming about stopping the virus altogether (for which there is no cure yet for this or the 1968 flu) and then penultimately, particularly among Democratic gov-

ernors and mayors, implementation of their progressive agenda by executive fiat under the guise of emergency requirements. With people locked in their homes, this effectively squelches opposition. Finally, the Democratic obsession with defeating Trump and regaining control of The White House is so overwhelming that it’s worth any price – even by plunging the nation into a terrible depression, to create an environment where Trump can be turned out of office and stripped of his signature preCOVID success of a roaring economy. That pleases the Chinese too because Trump had been pressuring them on trade issues. Places with enough backbone to stick with Western norms have included Sweden, Hong Kong and South Korea.

Millions haven’t died as restaurants, parks, schools and offices have remained open. Twelve states in the US didn’t lock down and they’ve been doing just fine.

Interestingly, New York State just announced that in a survey of about 1,200 newly admitted patients at over 100 New York hospitals conducted during the first few days of May that fully 66 percent of new COVID patients had been staying at home, not working (only 17 percent) and not using mass transit. Meaning people have been indoors. So how is staying at home indefinitely help-

But it has also been a blessing in disguise. People at the frontlines are being recognized and praised like never before. Neighbors are bonding and helping each other, even at a distance. Families are spending more time together doing the things that they often lament they never have time for.

As much as we have been challenged by this pandemic, we have also been given an opportunity to prove how strong and caring we can be. Some people prefer to call attention to all the negative aspects of this pandemic. I think it’s far better to focus on what it has done to make us better.”

From Forbes magazine: “In addition to [New Yorkers] mostly coming from their homes, surveyed patients were more likely to be over 51 years old, and either nonessential workers, retired or unemployed. 96 percent of the surveyed patients had co-morbidities, which means nearly all had another chronic medical condition prior to catching coronavirus.” We also know that about eight out of ten deaths associated with COVID-19 in the U.S. have occurred in adults ages 65 and older, according to the U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) so why are we locking down all the younger people and prohibiting folks to go to parks and beaches where the sunshine (Vitamin-D) and fresh air will do everyone some good if most hospitalizations come from older people who’ve been staying at home?

Maybe it’s a form of China envy for the power grab reasons indicated above? But taking a clear look at today’s China is helpful.

Aside from being an incubator for pandemics, China is a country that just last year put one million of their own citizens in concentration camps just because they were Muslims. China is a country that has been brutally suppressing freedom advocates in Hong Kong. China is country that rattles its sabers, missiles, warships and jet fighters every week against democratic Taiwan, threatening to invade and conquer them militarily. China is the main backer of the nefarious regime in North Korea and helps support Venezuela and Cuba among other bad actors. China is a country that essentially relies on the slave labor of untold millions to produce goods at ridiculously low prices so that Western nations can’t compete and then turns Westerners into consumer vassals – making Western nations utterly dependent on them for essentials including medicines and medical supplies, vitamins, clothing, shoes, hardware, electronics, you name it.

To protect America against the evil depredations of despotic regimes such as China and to ensure peace, freedom and stability in the world, we must wean ourselves off the teat of cheap (and often shoddily made) Chinese goods even if we have to pay more for them. Make things in America or in allied nations so that we retain our independence on all levels – and one sure way to put us on that path is to send our young people back to work and back to school now so that as a nation we are not bankrupted, enfeebled and ultimately dominated by malevolent dictators.

What “OPEN” Means in Phase 1 For Our City

Before I review what may be opening and what is not, I need to clarify once more the rules for opening pools. When our city posted the enacting declaration, it did not mirror the county’s language. This has created some communication problems. Pools can be opened at HOAs and condominiums. There are two scenarios in which your board can decide to operate. If the furniture is removed from the pool deck, the pool can be used by residents only, no visitors, 50% occupied, residents must practice social distancing and people going to and from the pool must be wearing facial coverings. If there is to be furniture utilized it must be monitored and cleaned while open, separated by 6 feet and no large groups. The decision to open, rests solely on the board. The new language is available on our website now, www.cohb.org/corona.

Buildings with tennis courts can open for single play only. NO

other common areas such as, gyms, club houses and card rooms should be open at this time. Our parks remain open for passive uses only. The coastal Mayors in Broward have been pushing to open our beaches for walking, jogging, swimming, surfing and scuba. No chairs, coolers, umbrellas, tents, or large groups. It is up to our county if this will happen in Phase 1.

People need to also understand that masks/facial coverings will be the new normal.

There is too much confusion about the importance of masks when you cannot practice social distancing. They need to be worn inside and out when you cannot practice social distancing. I still have been receiving complaints from concerned residents that are at high risk.

COVID-19 is still out there and will remain in our environment.

Just because some places are opening, it does not mean we are in the clear. There is more COVID-19 present then before

the outbreak. We need to continue to follow the CDC’s regulations. As we may be opening, there is a possibility of a far greater rebound. If this happens, we will be back to where we all started.

There has been a large push to open throughout Florida up north. Palm Beach, Broward and Miami-Dade have taken a slower approach until last week. Palm Beach opened under the Governor’s new declaration which included beaches. You need to know what “open” means in Phase 1 for our City. As of the writing of this article, there was a focus simply on medical procedures, manufacturing, restaurants, retail and personal grooming shops. Currently gyms, card rooms and club houses are not on the table.

chamber. This meeting has been established to share thoughts and best practices with a variety of businesses. There are many guidelines that have been suggested throughout the state and the county. Fort Lauderdale has developed their blueprint and we will be evaluating those best practices.

From discussions with the Mayors and watching what has been happening around the state, I have great concerns about enforcement. 25% is just that. We cannot have large crowds and gatherings. All of the CDC’s rules are in place. The next level of openings would be at 50%. There is a “new rule” NO mask, NO Service. Just like no shoes, no shirt, no service. I know that most of our residents will cooperate with the rules. For those individuals or businesses that do not comply, they will be fined and/or closed.

On the call I had this week, I continued to ask the questions about testing. Broward County

currently did not have the protocols for their antibody testing.

We have been told that they will have 5000 tests available. Nova Southeastern University has agreed to perform the study to see how many of Broward’s residents have had the disease and were asymptomatic. This number may seem not to be enough, but testing is conducted like a poll.

They are looking for a percentage of people that may have had the disease. Large group meeting areas and without monitoring.

The Coronavirus Small Business Sustainability and Recovery Loan Program is comprised of two separate loans, the Business Employment Bridge Loan Program with loan amounts up to $50,000, and the Emergency Business Cash Infusion Program with amounts up to $15,000. Both loans are available only to those businesses located within the Hallandale Beach Community Redevelopment Area (CRA). CRA Staff is in the process of vetting the applications. Staff is trying to get responses out to the business owners within 7-14 business days.

Order-In Initiative Assists Local Restaurants in Keeping their Doors Open In early March, our team quickly responded to the COVID19 crisis’ devastating impact on our local restaurants by launching “Order-In,” a promotional

campaign to encourage Hallandale Beach residents to order from local restaurants for delivery and takeout meals. Restaurants were able to sign up to be included in the listing on social media and the HBCRA website. In addition, restaurants were provided with information and assistance on how to register for delivery service on popular apps including UberEats, Grubhub, Doordash, and Postmates. Florida Power & Light (FPL) will Lower Customer Bills in May In response to the COVID-19 pandemic, beginning May 1, FPL plans to issue a one-time decrease of nearly 25% for the typical residential customer electric bill as a result of lower fuel costs. Business owners will also see a decrease in their bills, dependent by rate class.

Customers can look for a decrease in their bill after May 1,

To further assist customers, FPL is also implementing the same policies that it does during crises and has suspended electrical disconnections, is providing payment extensions and is waiving late payment fees for customers in a hardship situation. All of these policies will remain in effect while Florida is under a state of emergency.

Florida State Records Offers a COVID-19 Page Using Local Government Statistics F l o r i d a . S t a t e R e c o rd s . o rg began covering breaking news and statistics related to the coronavirus outbreak, which first emerged in China in late 2019.

Many news organizations use statistics from the World Health Organization and studies conducted independently by universities NGOs, but StateRecords is committed to only utilizing statistics and numbers reported by the Florida government.

While COVID-19 continues to spread in the United States, the webpage believes that utilizing information reported by nonprofit organizations and universities can easily lead to inconsistencies and bias, and state government public records are the most accurate and reliable source of information.

StateRecords is limiting bias and inconsistencies in the hopes of avoiding these inconsistencies

and remaining impartial, which keeps people safe and informed while going about daily life.

“There is a lot of uncertainty in the reporting happening for the coronavirus, and it can be difficult to know who to trust,” said a spokesperson from the website. “We’re getting our number directly from public records from the organizations responsible for keeping their citizens safe and their economy operational. We’re not interested in political bias or personal agendas like a lot of other organizations seem to be.

For us, the truth is in the numbers, and our numbers are from the people who know what they actually are.”

StateRecords launched the COVID-19 datapage (https:// florida.staterecords.org/covid-19) on April 1 and has continued updating statistics and breaking news related to the coronavirus

Florida Coronavirus Cases: As of May 10, Florida reported 40,596 confirmed cases of Coronavirus (COVID-19).

Of these, 1,721 have resulted in death. Miami-Dade County has the majority of cases with 14,007 reported.

Broward County was second with 5,858, and Palm Beach County, with 3,870, was third.

Orange County had 1,505, while Hillsborough County had 1,432. outbreak using public Florida state records. According to the webpage, the aim in launching this project was to create a way for residents to access information related to their state in a way that’s reliable and easily

“We have no evidence that sick pets can transmit coronavirus to otherwise healthy, uninfected owners,” Creevy said.

Creevy said that most viruses prefer to infect one species above others; under our current understanding, SARS-CoV-2 prefers infecting humans and is less effective at infecting cats or dogs.

“The very most important way this virus spreads is from person to person,” she emphasizes.

Most dogs and cats that have tested positive for the virus in

their bodies had known contact with infected humans. For some stray cats that have tested positive, it is not possible to determine what contact they may have had with infected people.

And although these animals tested positive for the SARSCoV-2 virus, it is not clear whether the virus made them ill.

Given how common cat and dog ownership is and how uncommon detection of SARSCoV-2 in these animals has been, Creevy says it is highly unlikely that dog or cat transmission of the virus will become a major factor in the pandemic.
