Mo Mohamed Is A ‘Guy On The Go’ Everybody in the vicinity of Aventura, North Miami Beach, Sunny Isles, Golden Beach, Hallandale, and Hollywood knows Mo Mohamed, the owner of Mo’s Bagels & Deli. His welcoming smile and accommodating manner immediately engage you. And, of course his fabulous menu of delicacies, bagels and bakery items keep bringing customers back to his restaurants (now two!) in droves. “Meet me at Mo’s” is the mantra of friends and business associates all through the week. Now, at his second location in Hallandale Beach at the site of the former Sage Deli, that slogan is emblazoned on the walls. Here, with his new enlarged wide-mouthed ovens, Mo’s bakers are able to produce hundreds of dozens of bagels a day. Mo Mohamed exemplifies the American Dream. He arrived from Egypt in 1984 as a young guy in pursuit of opportunity, with not too much more than hope in his pocket, a smile, and a great work ethic. He began working as a dishwasher, then a busboy in Pumpernik’s, then on Hallandale Beach Boulevard. In a short time, he moved up to learning the delicate slicing techniques of lox and deli meats, and within the seven years he was there, acquired skills in cooking purchasing, and management. Building a reputation as a man who knows the deli business, which is unlike any other type of restaurant, Mo was approached by Harriet and Marie, owners of Bagel Cove to help them build their business. They offered him a junior partnership and a large increase in salary, plus a percentage of the profits. Mo says he owes a lot to them and is very grateful for the opportunities they offered him. In 1995, Jay Mazen, a regular at Bagel Cove, who became a dear friend, convinced Mo that with his knowledge and experience and working 12-15 hours a day, he should own his own deli restaurant. At the time, the owners of Delancey Deli, located on NE

187th Street, were looking to sell their restaurant, and with Jay’s encouragement, Mo bought it and renamed it Mo’s Bagels & Deli. With his reputation for delicious quality food, bagels and bakery items, Mo’s

Pierre has been with Mo for almost 37 years. “At that time, I worked for him,” says Mo. “He taught me everything in the kitchen from salads to slicing, and how to prepare good food. He was my teacher then, and is my colleague

popularity grew. Mo credits the quality of his food to the fact that every menu item or bakery treat is made from scratch…. even the corned beef, roast beef, turkey and brisket. “Nothing at Mo’s is processed or pre-packaged,” he says. “Our kitchen and bakery are going full blast from early morning to late evening.” Mo also credits Paul Kruss, his partner and dear friend of 19 years, as well as his fabulous staff, many of whom have been with him for more than 30 years. ”The loyalty of my team is amazing,” says Mo. ”Between us, there is a partnership mentality in making Mo’s a success” He particularly credits Jean Miller, whom he considers a ‘brother’, Ernzier Previl (known as Mr. P) and Victor St. Pierre (known as Mr. Johnny), all specialists in deli preparation. They have all been with Mo since Pumpernik’s. St.

today.” In 2020, Sage Deli on Hallandale Beach Boulevard closed and RK, owners of the shopping center, approached Mo and Paul to take over the location. The partners believed it could ‘happen’ in Hallandale and Paul felt it could be ‘another home run for Mo’s.” Having been a great help from May to December last year, Mo’s 18-yearold son Amir, currently a student at FIU, was also encouraging, since he plans to work and learn the business with his dad as his mentor. Sage had a 47-year history in the area with many devoted customers, so Mo decided to hire former Sage cooks, employees, and especially Enel Mojean, the renowned bagel maker, who has been crafting specialty bagels for more than 35 years. Keeping a

younger market in mind, Mo did a total renovation on the interior in a New York style industrial-chic motif, with a floorplan that allowed for an occupancy of 90 and plenty of outdoor seating. The large brick ovens in Mo’s Hallandale have been rebuilt and the deli steamers behind the counter have been enlarged. Mo added a refrigerated ‘Grab-n-Go’ case and keeps it stocked with fresh bagel sandwiches, cream cheese and Dr. Brown sodas. The menu in Hallandale is the same as the one in Aventura, including awesome deli sandwiches and salads. Like Aventura, the deli counter and bakery are a sight to savor. Eat-in or takeout service are equally special, and delivery is available through Uber, Door Dash and most other services. Looking to the future, Mo says that along with his long-time partner and advisor Paul, he hopes to open other locations. “Today, a great deli with the special staff it requires is more difficult to put together from scratch,” he says, “I’m thinking of smaller operations that focus on presenting great food, Kosher-style with a more limited menu, to attract a younger market that remembers how their “Bubby” used to cook. Through the years, Mo has watched changing trends, the bottom line of success in the restaurant business, according to Mo, is to give customers great tasting quality food in a location where they feel at home. That’s why in this part of South Florida, you will frequently hear them say “Meet me at Mo’s.” Mo’s Bagel & Deli 2780 NE 187th Street Aventura, Fl 33160 305-936-8555 Mo’s Bagel & Deli 800 E. New Trial for Patients with Advanced and Metastatic Pancreatic Cancer Available Now Are you, or someone you know, being treated for Advanced or Metastatic Pancreatic Cancer with chemotherapy alone? If so, you may want to contact Dr. Robert Donoway at AtlasOncology in Hollywood/ Aventura, Florida, regarding a new trial combining multimodality therapy in combination with Pancreatic Nanoknife Ablation and with chemo-immuno-radiotherapy. With over 35 years experience performing pancreatic surgery here in Tri-county South Florida, Dr. Donoway saw what others as well recognize, that often because of late diagnosis, up to 85% of the patients undergoing pancreatic surgery for potential cure, already had metastatic disease that limited the benefit they might get from the Whipple surgery. Today, recent evidence shows that when even advanced disease is treated aggressively in a multimodality integrated approach, incorporating Nanoknife surgery, long term survivorship of many years can be achieved; especially when compared to chemotherapy alone, as mono-modality therapy. Dr. Donoway has been a pioneer in the use of Pancreatic NanoKnife, especially for complex and advanced cases and during the past decade, remains the only surgical oncologist performing the procedure in South Florida. International Patients from around the globe have traveled to receive this groundbreaking treatment; which is FDA approved. Dr. Donoway has also treated other advanced cancers, such as liver, breast and sarcomas using Nanoknife surgery. The average procedure lasts approximately 1-2 hours and has a brief recovery means the patient can start chemotherapy and radiation that much sooner. Dr. Donoway feels that “we are long overdue to revise our approach to treating Pancreatic cancer, which has remained unchanged in essentially over 80 years and has just broken the 9-10% five year survival barrier. Only through thinking outside the box, will we accomplish the positive. Otherwise, all we’re doing is confirming Einstein’s definition of Insanity.” Dr. Donoway is participating in several clinical studies identifying the best chemotherapy and immunotherapies to be used along with Nanoknife, Dr. Donoway states, “The results so far, have been very encouraging and we have begun using it for other select cancers. Among his longest survivors, are now patients with over eight years and without evidence of cancer recurrence. In the past, without Nanoknife, they would have been likely to have only lived a year or so, this technique opens a whole new

avenue for treating those eligible patients in a more targeted fashion.” Dr. Donoway will be presenting the long-term results of this Pancreatic treatment paradigm, later this fall at an international cancer society in Europe. Hallandale’s Vapor Shark Evolves Into Elevate Smoke Shop Vapor Shark in Hallandale Beach, opened nine years ago as a vaporizer store selling electronic cigarettes. Two years ago, it began evolving into a fullservice smoke shop, doing business as Elevate Smoke Shop, selling all kinds of smoking products, including tobacco. “We have the credibility and trust from consumers after our many years in the market delivering highquality products and service,” says proprietor Geo Tejada. “We specialize in what we do and focus on excellent products, product knowledge, and customer service. “We know all of the alternatives to smoking cigarettes, so we can help our customers to transition to a product that is more beneficial to their smoking experience.” Also, as the laws governing smoking have changed, placing an online order for smoking products has become more complicated. “Lawmakers don’t want these products to end up in the hands of minors,” Tejada says. “The new laws force you to come to a reputable store, where the salesperson can check your identification, to make sure these products and devices are being sold only to responsible adults. “At Vapor Shark, we follow the rules for what is being done ethically and correctly in the marketplace. A lot of mom-and-pop smoke shops will help anybody who walks in. We don’t do that.” Today, the 1,500 sq. ft. establishment is a smoker’s version of the proverbial “kid in a candy store,” filled with displays for all kinds of tobacco and alternative products. Here is an overview: E-cigarettes Electronic cigarettes were developed as an alternative to smoking tobacco. They eliminate the tars and other byproducts found in tobacco smoke, and in this sense, says the U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, “E-cigarettes have the potential to

benefit adult smokers who are not pregnant, if used as a complete substitute for regular cigarettes and other smoked tobacco products.” E-cigarettes are vapor products. They consist of a battery-powered heating element and a tank holding a liquid “juice.” When heated, the juice forms an aerosol that the user inhales. The juice contains nicotine, the primary addictive ingredient in tobacco. Other ingredients in the vapor may include propylene glycol, vegetable glycerin and a flavoring agent. “The level of nicotine in the juice ranges from 0 to 50 percent,” Tejada says. “This helps smokers switch from smoking cigarettes to vaping and gradually reduce their nicotine consumption.” Vapor Shark offers a wide variety of vaping devices and juices.

and different kinds of tobacco with varying strengths of nicotine (or none at all). Vapor Shark sells a complete line of hookahs and supplies, including the pipes themselves in a variety of sizes, shapes and a vast array of smoking options.

Fumes Fumes are disposable electronic cigarette devices. They come with a built-in battery, coils and filters that don’t need changing and a supply of flavored ejuice. “You buy it for the flavor, use it for 1,000 to 2,500 puffs, then dispose of it and buy a different flavor,” Tejada says. Some of Vapor Shark’s most popular flavors are cool mint, grape, mango, melon ice, piña colada, and strawberry banana. Also available is “Cuban tobacco” flavor, which doesn’t come from Cuba. “That would be illegal,” Tejada emphasizes.

Roll-your-own cigarettes The paper on commercially manufactured cigarettes may contain many impurities that affect the flavor of the product. As a result, some smokers prefer to roll their own cigarettes. Vapor Shark sells unrefined hemp rolling papers with no chemical additives - just the purest natural fibers of organic hemp. So what do you roll in these papers? Choose from a variety of high-quality tobacco leaves or hemp flowers.

Hookahs A hookah (water pipe) is a glass or plastic vase topped with a bowl where tobacco or some other substance, called shisha, is burned. The smoke passes through water in the vase and then into a hose on which the smoker sucks. Shisha may be a combination of flavored tobacco with a molasses base, or some tobacco-free herbal preparation, plus charcoal to create the combustion, Tejada explains. Shisha flavors span a broad range, including fruit, mint, spice, vegetable combinations

Pipes Unless you’re watching a Sherlock Holmes movie, you may not see many old-style pipes these days, but they’re still around. Vapor Shark sells an assortment of wooden and glass pipes. They come in different sizes and shapes. You pack the bowl with tobacco and light it directly with a match or lighter. The shop also sells multiple flavors and strains of pipe tobacco. These pipes also can be used to smoke hemp flowers.

Vapor Shark has three convenient locations the one in Hallandale Beach, and two others in Hialeah. All are open from 10 AM to 10 PM daily: 730 W Hallandale Beach Blvd., Unit 107 Hallandale Beach, FL 33009 Phone: 954-210-8921 2794 W 68th St., unit 108 Hialeah FL 33016 Phone: 305-503-0150 459 E 49th St. Hialeah FL 33013 Phone: 786-636-1643

Cannabis Straight Talk From Miracle Leaf The annual National Cannabis Day, which is observed on Tuesday, April 20 just passed, Geo Tejada of the Miracle Leaf Cannabis health center in Hallandale Beach seeks to set the record straight on his products. “There’s a lot of confusion about Cannabis,” he says. “People want to know why they should consider the use of Cannabis. Where can they buy these products? Is Cannabis legal in Florida? Do people need a license to buy? How can Cannabis products be used.” Tejada explains that Cannabis products come from the Cannabis sativa plant, a widely cultivated crop around the world. “It exists in multiple varieties,” he says. THC vs CBD Some varieties of Cannabis have psychoactive properties that produce a euphoric reaction. They contain a relatively high concentration of a substance called tetrahydrocannabinol (THC). The common name for such varieties is marijuana. Florida law allows the use of “Medical Marijuana” that is high in THC for certain qualifying conditions, including cancer, Crohn’s disease, epilepsy, glaucoma, HIV-AIDS, multiple sclerosis, Parkinson’s disease, and post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD). Patients must obtain a Medical Marijuana card and a recommendation from a medical doctor or doctor of osteopathic medicine who has taken a course and passed an exam to receive certification as a marijuana physician. Upon being approved, patients join a registry and receive a Medical Marijuana card. Then they may purchase their recommendation THC products from a dispensary licensed by the state. “Today,” Tejada says, “over 500,000 patients are registered in Florida.” The rules are different for other varieties of Cannabis, known as hemp, that contain only trace amounts of THC. During World War II, the U.S. government used hemp to make canvas, rope, and uniforms. Today it is a source of products as diverse as biofuel, cement, cosmetics, clothing, insulation,

paper, and textiles. “Hemp became a federally approved crop under the 2018 farm bill, and all of our products are hempbased,” Tejada says. “Their primary substance, cannabidiol (CBD), lacks euphoric properties but still can alleviate symptoms of anxiety, pain, and stress associated with a variety of medical conditions.

“You don’t need a Medical Marijuana card and a recommendation to buy the products we sell at health centers such as Miracle Leaf,” he emphasizes. To smoke or not Discussion of Cannabis typically revolves around smoking the flowers, but that’s not the only way to use Cannabis products. Hemp-based CBD products in particular have blossomed (pun intended) in recent years, offering a wide variety of consumption alternatives. Tejada lists sublingual tinctures (drops of liquid under the tongue), “vapes” for inhalation, edible gummies, and topical pain-relief creams that are popular with the elderly. Cannabis also is a major ingredient in Alice B. Toklas brownies. Alice was the life-mate of author Gertrude Stein, who reigned over the Paris literary scene

between the two World Wars. Google on “Alice B. Toklas brownies” to find thousands of entries about this confection. If you make these brownies with marijuana, limit consumption and beware of unintended side effects. Hemp is kinder and gentler in this regard. Tejada says his Miracle Leaf store in Hallandale Beach has over 2,000 regu-

lar customers. Some are tobacco smokers who view Miracle Leaf’s CBD products as a desirable alternative, while others use CBD products while waiting for their Medical Marijuana cards and recommendations. “We’re not a Medical Marijuana dispensary,” he emphasizes, “but we do have certified marijuana physicians on staff to provide assistance to people who come in with specific medical needs. “Most of our customers are older than 45. Cannabis is not just for the young. The elderly have been able to connect with the use of Cannabis. We can’t make medical claims for a cure, but we have been able to help many

patients with medical conditions to alleviate their symptoms.” For Fido and Tabby Many pet owners give CBD products to their dogs and cats, Tejada says. Signs your canine and feline friends may benefit from CBD include arthritis and other inflammatory ailments, chronic pain, digestive tract upsets, kidney and liver ailments, separation anxiety when you leave home and fear of thunder and other loud noises. Also, while it’s not a cure, CBD may prolong and improve the quality of life for elderly dogs and cats with cancer and other terminal conditions. CBD products sold specifically for pets include capsules and chews, peanut butter, tinctures, treats and topical preparations such as shampoos and balms. Resist the temptation to give your pets the same products you use, Tejada advises. Look for products specifically formulated and labtested for pets and organically sourced, which means they come from pesticidefree hemp plants. Dosage depends on your pet’s size, weight and individual body chemistry. While product packaging and your veterinarian may offer guidelines, every pet is different, so start slowly and work up to an optimal dosage. National Cannabis Day National Cannabis Day originated with five California high school students who met at 4:20 PM on April 20, 1971, to smoke marijuana. Today it’s an international counter-culture holiday and an opportunity for the Cannabis industry to showcase its products and services. “The industry gives back to the community with big promotions and sales,” Tejada says, adding that Miracle Leaf always participates in the observance in a big way.

Fox Vein And Laser Experts For years, Fox Vein and Laser Experts has been at the forefront of vein therapy and laser procedures. Around five years ago, Dr. Fox expanded the practice to include many non-invasive cutting-edge procedures such as microneedling, tattoo removal, hydrofacials, PRP, hair restoration, skin rejuvenation, peels, lasers and so much more. Fox Vein & Laser Experts has been an industry leader through the years, with the best equipment and services offered. In recent times, the practice has expanded, now offering even more cutting-edge treatments. They are one of the first practices in the United States to offer Physiq and Virtue RF, two machines by Cartessa Aesthetics that provide FDA-approved, safe and noninvasive treatments that require little to no down time, aimed to help you look your very best. Physiq is the best in non-invasive body treatments to rid you of those hard-to-treat areas that weight loss and diet leave untouched. This new stateof-the-art machine uses four pads to treat multiple areas of the body at once, resulting in a leaner, more sleek and toned physique. This pain-free treatment is highly effective and has no down-time, unlike plastic surgery procedures like tummy tucks and liposuction. No anesthetic is necessary and it is extremely effective and affordable. Many other body contouring machines in the industry are extremely uncomfortable and do not always have the best results. Physiq is the first to use STEP technology (Sequential Thermal and Electrical Pulse) muscle stimulation with laser lipolysis in a sequential manner with contact cooling. The patient can actually control the energy and comfort level themselves, which is the main reason why the procedure is relatively pain-free and requires no down time. It can treat multiple body parts at once, including the inner thighs, buttocks,

abdominals and flanks, just to name a few. The machine, made for Cartessa by Europe’s leading laser manufacturer, Deka, is already being hailed as the newest and best in body contouring, it will quickly become an industry leader. Experts recommend five sessions, each spaced one week apart, for optimal results. The treatment sessions are faster and more comfortable than other body contouring machines. Fox Vein & Laser Experts is now offering Physiq at its Hollywood location. Fox Vein & Laser Experts is also one of the first in the country to offer the Virtue RF. This machine takes microneedling to a whole new level. It is faster, more customizable and less painful than its predecessors. This machine uses 36 gold coated needles at one of three treatment speeds with robotic precision delivery to provide the best microneedling radiofrequency treatment in the industry. It provides immediate results with little to no down time. The results improve over time as your body continues to build collagen and elastin to improve your appearance. It is used to shrink pore size, help skin laxity, improve fine lines and wrinkles, build collagen and elastin, improve scars, especially those caused by acne and help improve the appearance of stretch marks. It can also be used with PRP or a proprietary stem cell system to help with hair loss. Only the Virtue RF pairs the treatment with LED red or blue light to help with acne or signs of aging. The facial treatments can be followed by a microcurrent dual face mask system by Franz Skincare. This mask uses ion currents and patented Tissue X technology to transport the nourishing substances deeper into the dermis where they help the most. The other amazing aspect of the Virtue machine is, the ability to completely turn off the radiofrequency if desired. This is very

helpful when we are microneedling for hair loss or on patients who have defibrillators or pacemakers. These FDAapproved machines are at the forefront of new and innovative less invasive, less painful treatment options that help you look your best, for years to come. Fox Vein & Laser Experts also offers the best in tattoo removal, using Picoway by Candela. In those cases where someone may regret getting a tattoo, hope is not lost. This machine is the best tattoo removal laser on the market. It can also be used to treat benign pigmented lesions, discolorations, scars and more. The laser uses Picosecond pulses of light in various wavelengths and vibrational energy to remove the ink or benign pigmented lesions. It comes in various wavelengths to adequately treat various colors of ink and melanin on any color skin. The photo-acoustic effect minimizes the injury to the skin and tissues to just the lesion or area being treated. Tattoos and discolorations can be removed faster and with less pain than older treatments. In addition to tattoo removal, the laser can also be used for skin rejuvenation. It has a separate hand piece, known as Resolve by Picoway, which can help with fine lines and wrinkles, as well as signs of aging, like darkening and age spots. The laser also helps refine tummy tuck scars, breast scars and facial scars. “We originally added the Picoway to help people rid themselves of discoloration related to their vein issues, but we use it for so much more,” said Dr. Fox. Aside from vein procedures, Fox Vein & Laser Experts also performs hair restoration with microneedling and PRP or stem cell serums. They have been a primary center in a hair regrowth trial using microneedling and AnteAge stem cell serums. The Virtue RF micron-

eedling machine makes 36 micro-holes in the scalp with each pass. These channels allow the PRP and stem cells to be better absorbed in the areas that it is needed. Fox Vein & Laser Experts is completing a funded study of hair restoration and so far, have seen amazing results. The patients have noticed thicker hair, even after the first few treatments. The study was designed as a six-month trial, with patients coming in every two weeks for three months, then only once monthly. In between visits, the patients are instructed to use a hair care formula by AnteAge at home. Before and after photos have been taken, which visually show the success rate. “Many people have struggled with thinning hair and hair loss from stress, aging, medications, Covid, illness, etc. and this has been so helpful,” said Dr. Fox. Fox Vein & Laser Experts also has a full-time aesthetician on staff, Samantha. She has experience providing peels, facials and laser hair removal for more than a decade. She performs all types of cutting-edge facials, peels, jelly masks, hydrofacials, aquagold and more. Samantha is here to help make your skin look and feel youthful and amazing, regardless of your age. Whatever your skin and body goals, Samantha can help you achieve them. Fox Vein & Laser Experts have been a leader in vein treatment and care for over 20 years, with a focus on venous insufficiency, endovenous laser, sclerotherapy, foam sclerotherapy, phlebectomies, ultrasound guided therapies and so much more. The team is able to treat your skin, veins and body issues with the best, newest and most cuttingedge machines and procedures available. List Now While The Market Is Hot Not every real estate professional targets his or her career to be known as a “concierge broker.” Twenty-plus years ago, when she first started out in real estate, that was the goal of Lonna Spitaleri, now founder/ owner/broker of Costa Bella Realty Group in Hollywood. From the beginning, Lonna wanted to be recognized as a real estate sales professional, who could exceed her client’s expectations in delivering personalized service, whether the sale was small or monumental and she obviously succeeded. Lonna started her career as a sales associate with RE/MAX. During each of the eight years she was affiliated with that agency, she was awarded the 100% or Platinum Award as a Top Producer. Following that and just prior to founding Costa Bella Realty Group in 2016, Lonna had worked an additional eight years as a Broker Associate with another top real estate brokerage, where again, she consistently was cited as a Top Producer. Today, not only is Lonna the owner of a fine boutique real estate brokerage, but she has advanced her credentials with the designation of Certified Luxury Home Specialist, as well as some other specialized industry certifications. Lonna specializes in all types of properties that include: luxury homes, single family homes, condos and commercial properties. She serves as a buyer’s agent as well as a seller’s agent. Lonna and her agents assist clients with decision-making in properties under construction, relocations, waterfront prop-

erties, vacation homes and investment properties. She guides first-time home buyers by providing research on all applicable properties. Currently, her company Costa Bella Realty Group has 25 agents, personally selected by Lonna for their personality, attitudes and people skills. Besides English, Costa Bella Realty Group can offer professional service and expertise in Russian, Spanish, French, Creole and Italian. Under Lonna’s direction, each agent is groomed in sensitivity training to meet individual client needs and the expertise to follow through with a smooth transaction to the sale. Known as a boutique real estate brokerage, Costa Bella Realty Group has assisted clients in the buying and selling of residential and commercial properties ranging in every price range. Springs. The brokerage has also helped clients close on hotels and motels on Hollywood Beach and Downtown Hollywood. Costa Bella Realty Group is located at 330 North Federal

A Non-Typical Smoke Shop “Smokes Unlimited” proclaims the sign above the front door of a shop on the southeast corner of North Federal Highway and Pembroke Road/Moffett Street in Hallandale Beach. Inside, you’ll find an extensive assortment of merchandise ranging well beyond the offerings of a typical smoke shop. Looking for incense? Smokes Unlimited has it. Some two dozen different fragrances are available. “Just light a stick and let its aroma dissipate cooking odors and freshen the air,” says the shop’s co-owner, Shafiul Azam. Incense also may be used for aromatherapy, meditation and as an insect repellent. Another unusual item on sale at Smokes Unlimited is kratom, made from the broad, dark-green leaves of a tropical tree, Mitragyna speciosa. A member of the coffee family, it grows in Malaysia, Myanmar, Thailand and elsewhere in southeast Asia, and has a long history of traditional use in parts of that region to manage pain and opioid withdrawal and to counteract fatigue. In small amounts, kratom produces an increase in alertness, energy, and sociability. In larger amounts, its effects include a decrease in pain, an increase in pleasure, and a sedative effect. Despite its mind-altering psychotropic effects and a tendency to be habitforming, kratom is not illegal. You can buy it in leaf form for brewing tea, as a powder, in capsules and as an extract or gum.

Smokes Unlimited also sells more typical smoke-store products such as: • Disposable e-cigarettes – known by the names fume, HQD, Vcan, and many others -- containing “juice” for 1,000 to 4,500 puffs. • Reusable e-cigarettes and the juices to refill them. • Commercially made tobacco cigarettes. • Premium papers for hand-rolling one’s own cigarettes. • Handmade cigars with tobaccos from multiple locations around the globe, including Connecticut, the Dominican Republic, Ecuador and Nicaragua. • Hookahs (water pipes), a type of smoking system that originated in India, spread throughout Persia and the Arabic world and today it is increasing in popularity in America. • The special shisha tobacco preparations to smoke in the hookahs, containing flavored tobacco or some tobacco-free herbal mixture with a molasses base, plus charcoal to create the combustion. • Lighter fluids and lighters, including butane torches. Cannabis Products Other featured items at Smokes Unlimited include products from legal strains of the hemp plant, Cannabis sativa, that don’t produce a “high” and don’t require a doctor’s prescription. These items contain cannabidiol (CBD)

or Delta-8-Tetrahydrocannabinol. “They come as pre-rolled cigarettes, gummies, and tinctures – oils you put under your tongue,” Azam explains. “You use them for relaxation, sleep and pain relief. They’re available in doses ranging from 1,000 mg to 2,500 mg.” Just so you know, Delta-8 is a very close relative of Delta-9-Tetrahydrocannabinol, a hemp strain popularly known as marijuana. Delta-8 is legal in most places, including Florida and some consumers prefer Delta-8, alleging that it’s more effective than CBD. In Florida, Delta-9 is legal only for medical purposes and requires users to register with the state and to obtain a recommendation from a medical doctor or doctor of osteopathy, who has been certified by the state as a marijuana physician. Smokes Unlimited is not a medical marijuana dispensary and does not sell Delta-9. A Work in Progress Azam came to the U.S. from Bangladesh 11 years ago. Before emigrating, he earned a Master of Business Administration degree from International Islamic University Chittigong, the largest top-graded government-approved private university in Bangladesh. Upon arrival in the U.S., he spent almost five years working in a grocery store before beginning a commercial collaboration with a fellow Bangladeshi business partner, Sajib Choudhury. Today – in addition to the Hallandale Beach Smokes Unlimited – Azam and Choudhury own other smoke shops in Dania Beach and Hollywood, as well as convenience stores in Delray Beach

and Pompano Beach. Three years ago, Azam attended a business expo in Miami and learned from a business broker about the availability of Midway Food Store, a 2,100sq-ft convenience store in a strategic high-traffic location, just south of the boundary between Hollywood and Hallandale Beach. The partners bought it and spent a year operating it. Then they began rebranding it as Smokes Unlimited and adapting it to their own business model. “We’re changing the business little by little,” Azam says. Gone now are Midway Food Store’s canned goods, groceries and limited fast-food menu. Merchandise remaining from its previous convenience-store existence includes a diverse inventory of beverages (beer, wine, flavored vodkas, mixers, energy drinks, sodas and fruit juices) in a row of coolers, lining the entire back wall of the store, and a modest selection of packaged pastries, bags of salty snacks, candies, over-thecounter pain relievers, baseball caps, boxes of feminine hygiene products and plastic packages of underwear. The new sign above the front entrance mentions a lounge, although that hasn’t happened yet. “Because of COVID-19, we couldn’t get a lounge permit now, but we went ahead and put it on the sign anyway,” Azam explains. Attorney Gerald Cowen Experienced Transactional Attorney Gerald Edward Cowen, long-time Hollywood and Hallandale lawyer, has built his practice around serving client needs as a transactional attorney. Transactional law, refers to the practice of law as it relates to money, business and commerce. “A transactional attorney provides legal aid to entrepreneurs with contract drafting, real estate acquisition, and intellectual property protection,” says Cowen. “It also provides protection to the individual and his or her personal assets.” Cowen received his Bachelor of Arts degree from Pennsylvania State University and his Masters in Education from Temple University. He taught for several years in private and public schools throughout Philadelphia. After moving to Florida, he studied law at Nova Southeastern University, where he earned his Juris Doctor in 1980. Throughout his career, Cowen was involved in the planning, negotiating and document drafting of contracts in all types of business transactions. In more popular words, he was instrumen-

tal in overseeing “the law of the deal.” That involved a thorough understanding of the business, financial and economic aspects of all entities involved in formulating contracts and disclosure documents. It also necessitated the ability to conduct due diligence and counsel clients on the legalities, involving their business decisions. In the 1980s, Cowen worked for a law firm with clients that included small and major corporations, developers, condominium and homeowner associations. That firm developed, the first condominium project approved by the State of Florida. Strange as it may seem, in that project, the buyer not only was deeded the unit he or she was purchasing, but also the airspace within the unit. Cowen states that if that building was ever leveled, aside from his or her share in the underlying property, the owner would still own the airspace where the property was located, as well as their percentage of the common areas. Today, Cowen observes that getting access to the unit’s airspace, if the building was lev-

eled would pose a problem. When Cowen opened his own practice in 1985, his early focus concentrated on transactional work commercially, on a more personal level for his clients and protecting their individual assets. That included estate planning, establishing trusts and writing customized wills as per their needs. “Regardless of the size of a client’s assets,” says Cowen, “my most important role as an estate planning attorney is to assist individuals and couples in avoiding probate, saving time and money. This includes assisting with preneed documents, such as Power of Attorney and Healthcare Surrogate, all to protect the individual’s interests.” In that context, Cowen is also a probate attorney, who oversees the gathering of assets as per the will, paying off debts, final distribution of the remaining funds and in accordance with the individual estate plan, as per the law. Gerald Edward Cowen maintains an active real estate practice in the sale and leasing of commercial properties

and follows through with tenant compliance as per the contract. He helps individual clients with purchase, mortgage and leasing contracts, as well as serving as counsel for landlord/tenant disputes, evictions and association matters. Cowen also represents clients in “mail-away” transactions for out-ofstate buyers’ and sellers’ closings in Florida. In so doing, he prepares documents for sale and purchase, title, insurance, closings and provides any needed explanation of Florida law to incoming residents or business owners. Licensed for over 35 years, Gerald E. Cowen is a community-oriented professional with interests centered around Hollywood. He has owned several commercial and residential properties in the city and serves as a member of the Board of Directors of his homeowners association. He also served on the Board of the Hollywood Housing Authority, an agency vested to find affordable housing within the city. In that position, he assisted in negotiating and contracting for the purchase and management of Authority housing projects. Since 1996, Gerald Cowen is very proud of his years of involvement with the American Cancer Society. He was the first co-chairman of the Broward “Relay for Life” and was involved in the very popular Broward Cancer Society “Jail or Bail” fundraising event. Although not as active today, he has been honored with the designation of Lifetime Member of the Board of Directors of the American Cancer Society, Broward Chapter. From his office at 2200 Hollywood Boulevard, Cowen says, “I have had a very varied, satisfying career and I enjoy helping people navigate their every-day problems that necessitate a ‘legal eye.’” In his spare time, Gerald Cowen is an avid scuba diver, fisherman and has travelled extensively worldwide. He is a member of the Board of Directors of South Florida Divers, Inc. This year, in 2021, Martindale-Hubbell, a global network of attorneys and websites that provides client and peer review ratings, lists Gerald Edward Cowen as “Peer Rated for High Professional Achievement.” I guess you can’t beat a commendation like that, especially coming from your colleagues in a renowned, respected publication! Alpha To Omega, Isaac Mansur Wants To Help Protect Your Home With his company, Omega Doors and Windows in Ft. Lauderdale, Isaac Mansur has your home or business covered. His five-star rated company has a tech-trained and certified team that specializes in installing, replacing and repairing high impact windows and doors garage doors, barn doors, custom front doors, French doors, sliding doors, folding doors, and secure back doors in homes or buildings. They also design and customize outdoor screening of any size or shape, as well as provide repair or replacement services on these products. But what Mansur stresses to residents in South Florida, is the importance of impact-resistant doors and windows. “I really believe every home and business in South Florida should be prepared with this type of protection,” says Isaac Mansur. Living in a hurricane-prone part of the world, high impact resistant windows can help preserve your home, storefront or office and keep your family and equipment much safer.” He added that the alternative, hurricane shutters, necessitate the home or business owner to struggle with heavy shutters or wood each time a storm or other threat is warned, or if left in place, would keep the family or business in the dark, during safe times. “Impact resistant windows have other benefits, as well,” says Mansur, “such as reducing noise levels from outside traffic or construction, providing greater resistance against intruders and flying objects. They also reduce energy bills by reflecting outside heat and UV rays, while helping to maintain the temperature indoors. And, he adds, “impact windows can qualify for tax credits through Energy Saving Tax programs, as well as possibly reduce insurance costs.” Mansur explains that high impact resistant windows combine the use of a strong frame and thicker laminated glass to withstand winds that reach up to 200 miles per hour or Category 5 wind conditions. The impact-resistant

glass is manufactured with a thin strip of plastic layered between two sheets of glass utilizing a stabilizing lamination process. “Impact-resistant windows and doors are strong and are in place when you need them,” he adds, “and they do not change the outside appearance of the structure.”

homes, that includes installation or replacement of windows and doors on high rise buildings, hotels, shopping centers and factories. Omega’s most recent project was replacing the windows and doors at the Hilton Doubletree Hotel in Sunny Isles6y. Omega also contracts with builder/

Mansur is very knowledgeable about safety with windows, doors and locks. Born in Israel, he grew up in a world of construction. His entire family, his father, brothers and cousins, are all in construction. When he first came to New York from Israel, his background qualified him for a job in the field. When he moved to Florida 20 years ago, Isaac enrolled in a state-certified program that involved regulations and codes. This prepared him for exams that would accredit Isaac as a licensed contractor for the installation of windows and doors, in compliance with the stringent South Florida Building Code. That’s when Isaac formed his own company, Alpha Windows & Doors, Inc. This licensing qualifies Isaac to bid on behalf of Omega Windows and Doors for contracts on commercial, as well as residential properties. Aside from

developers on new projects. With this type of background and experience, Isaac can assess any problem situation and come up with accurate, fast solutions. Likewise, he is able to customize and adapt to unusual structural challenges, when it comes to screening and doorway challenges. Omega Windows and Doors is a member of the Builders Association of South Florida, Florida Homebuilders and the National Association of Home Builders. All of Omega’s employees are certified, have undergone FBI fingerprint screening, are professional and work clean. They conduct their jobs under OSHA guidelines and respect client privacy during their time onsite, under the supervision of a project manager. Mansur is sensitive to a family’s needs. He and his wife Rachel have raised four children in South Florida. His

son Ben, who attends Florida International University, works with his father. His intention is to become a project manager for Omega. Isaac’s cousin Leo is one of Omega’s field managers. So, in essence, Omega is a family-oriented business. Other services that Omega Doors & Windows can provide are locksmith installation, repair and replacement, hinge repair, ball bearing roller repair or replacement, storefront glass replacement, frame repair, sliding door lock repair, molding replacement and anything having to do with windows and doors in a home or business. Omega techs are available for emergency situations and same day service. Installation services are also available same-day. Isaac Mansur is a professional. His team equally is. They are state-certified. They work accurately, clean and quickly. The company complies with CDC regulations as to COVID safety. Isaac believes in making things easy for his clients. Job estimates are free of charge. Omega offers many payment options that include ApplePay, PayPal, Vermo, Zelle, traditional credit cards and of course, cash. The company also offers its own financing plan. “My main concern is always for my client,” says Isaac. “We want to provide the best job possible, under any conditions. How well I know that family comes first. A homeowner should not be concerned about inanimate things like doors, windows, screening and locks. He or she should be most concerned about the safety of his family and we are here to help ensure that. The same goes for businesses,” he adds, “since equipment and lost time are difficult to replace. At Omega, we are here to prevent that.” Omega Doors & Windows 4972 SW 35th Terrace Fort Lauderdale, Fl 33312 omegadoorsandwindows.com 954-682-3109

Introducing Island Spices Grill: The Ultimate Caribbean Cuisine Delivered Right To Your Door Are you tired of eating the same old dishes? Are you looking to try something new and delicious? Christian Tyson and Shernette Mattiason’s delivery-only Caribbean-style catering company, Island Spices Grill might be the place for you. Implementing a wildly creative and flavorful menu of Caribbean and Island inspired dishes, Tyson and Mattiason are passionate cooks and entrepreneurs, who are ready to serve you some of the most mouthwatering dishes in South Florida. Amidst the COVID-19 Pandemic, many restaurants were faced with the challenge of limiting their businesses. Lockdowns and social distancing measures have made it increasingly harder for restaurants to operate successfully; many customers have felt unsafe or uncomfortable visiting restaurants and sitting in highly crowded areas. Naturally, many have felt reluctant to return to casual indoor dining and as a result, delivery options have soared with several new restaurants opening up strictly for delivery. As the Pandemic unfolded, we’ve seen the emergence of a variety of “ghost kitchens” or restaurants that operate on a deliver-only, basis. In the spirit of American innovation and adaption, restaurateurs have risen above these challenges and found opportunities, where there were obstructions. Tyson, having professional experience working within the Real Estate and Construction Industry, is one of these restaurateurs. Seeing the lack of a Jamaican cuisine presence in the South Floridian restaurant industry, he decided to team up with Mattiason to take advantage of this niche. “If you look at Hallandale and Collins, there are a lot of people who like West Indian Food,” said Tyson. After seeing how two of his restaurant owning friends adapted to the Pandemic, by successfully operating their own ghost kitchens, Tyson became inspired by and enamored with the notion of opening his own “ghost

kitchen.” Understanding the enormous cost of renting out a commercial space and overhead expenses, Tyson and Mattiason decided, that it would be far more economical to open a “ghost kitchen” at Mattiason’s home, near Hard Rock Stadium, in Miami Gardens. We’ll serve breakfast from 6:00 a.m. to 2:00 p.m and dinner from 7:00 p.m. to 2:00 a.m.,” Christian said. “Breakfast will be vegan, vegetarian and regular, but healthy. We won’t start serving dinner until 7:00 p.m., because, that’s when working people come home and start thinking about their evening meal.” Though their menu will be of a Caribbean and Bahamian origin, Tyson and Mattiason intend to provide customers with a highly diversified menu. Their breakfast menu includes delicious Belgian waffles carefully made with a variety of flavors such as vanilla and almond to give them a rich and unique flavor, cheese and regular grits, cream cheese bagels, warm croissants, French toast, stuffed omelets and breakfast burritos, hot oatmeal and biscuits with gravy, just to name a few.

“We’re trying to be flexible. We want to have a diverse mixture of food,” said Tyson, who was extremely enthusiastic about the menu. One of their top dishes, Liver And Cabbage, is a staple of Jamaican Cuisine. Gravy is steadily sautéed with onions and peppers, creating a rich, full flavor before adding cabbage and a side of Akee. Akee, the national fruit of Jamaica, has a creamy and buttery texture that compliments the saltier and savory flavor of Liver. Highly popular in Jamaica, this appetizing dish is a perfect and well-rounded meal to start your day with. Additionally, you can also try out one of Island Spices Grill’s beef patties and pair it with coco bread. Slightly sweetened with a dash of coconut milk, the coco bread melds perfectly for a delightful breakfast meal. For those of you on a health kick looking for something more vegetable oriented, you can try the callaloo, a popular Caribbean vegetable dish. This delicious salad boasts a number of vegetables such as onion, garlic, thyme and collard greens, it can pack a pow-

erful nutritious punch. If you’re considering more vegan and vegetarian options to practice a healthier more plant-based diet, world dishes like callaloo are a great way to expand your palate and try something new that you’ll be sure to love. You also can pair any one of these dishes, with water, soda, choice of a smoothie or shake, which come in a variety of flavors. For those looking for something a little sweeter after eating a hearty meal, you can try any one of Island Spices Grill’s desert: rich red velvet cake, sour cream cake and chocolate cake are among some of the hottest dessert choices. However, their rum cake is probably the top dessert choice. “It’s a chocolate cake with rum in it. It’s so moist, it’ll slap you in the face,” said Tyson. The dinner menu also boasts a diverse Caribbean inspired menu. Then the agent must get certified in Errors & Omissions (E&O) Insurance. Following that, the agent must contract with a Medicare wholesaler, and follow further by contracting with multiple other Medicare companies. And, it does not stop there, since certifications must be renewed every year with updated courses. Harold Solomon is licensed in 36 states throughout the country and because Medicare often differs from state to state, sometimes even from county to county, The Solomon Insurance Group has a host of carefully chosen agents in those states to deliver the same personalized service. Mr. Solomon is available to meet with social, condo or business groups to explain the latest options, including the various Medicare supplemental programs that can provide 100% healthcare coverage for the rest of a client’s life. The team at the Solomon Insurance Group will listen to you and provide a health insurance evaluation at no cost. They will review all coverage options available in your area, across all 50 states. A variety of plan options exist for every health care need and it takes someone with total understanding of them to recommend what will be best for you. “My goal is to make Medicare simple and easy to understand,” says Solomon, “and to help our clients make the best choice for their health coverage.”

Harold Solomon Will Navigate You Through The Quandries Of Medicare “We Will Find The Best Coverage At The Best Price” Harold Solomon says, “When it comes to making decisions about health insurance when you are 65 or older, don’t worry. We are here to help.” Harold Solomon, principal of The Solomon Insurance Group in Fort Lauderdale, is the founder of The Medicare Enrollment Center, a specialty service that guides seniors through the confusion of making healthcare decisions with Medicare. Having always been in service industries, Solomon says he began to hear horror stories about decisions involved with making Medicare choices and the limited, sometimes discourteous, assistance from Medicare 800 numbers. That’s when he decided this was a population he would like to help. “When the average person is about to turn 65, he or she begins to research how to enroll in the Medicare program,“ says Solomon. “That’s where the confusion begins as the person is confronted with a myriad of plans and options that require reviewing, comparing and deciding which plan is the best for them.” So, they call a Medicare 800 number. They reach a voice who does not know anything about them, nor their current medical situation or future needs. Likewise, the caller does not know who that person is and probably would have difficulty finding that same individual again. Aside from that, there is no likely follow-up to the caller from the insurance side, even after enrollment.

Thinking as to how Harold could help others, he developed a process to accomplish his mission: 1) LISTEN -The first important thing is to listen. Harold asks questions to determine the kind of Medicare health coverage, will meet the client needs. 2) EXPLAIN – Carefully explain all of the best options for each individual. 3) ENROLL - Once decided on the best of the options, Harold explains the enrollment process and enrolls his client, simplifying this burdensome process. Once you become a client, Harold Solomon and his team will stay with you. He will always be available for your questions and will periodically check in with you. He will keep you abreast of any modifications, new benefits or planned policy or premium changes and will work in your best interest at all times. In other words, he and his team will always act proactively on your behalf. Harold Solomon is well-qualified to do this. He is a licensed Medicare specialist. That means he has taken a series of programs and examinations that each require their own certification until the agent can proceed to the next step. It begins with exams for state licensure to sell health insurance. The next step is to pass two state-mandated courses (Preventing
