Guy Fieri at the opening of his LINQ restaurant

HEY, GUY! MEET GUY FIERI By Grace Bascos

W

Photo of LINQ Restaurant opening by Ethan Miller; Chef Guy Fieri and bacon mac-n-cheese burger courtesy of The LINQ Hotel & Casino

ith a myriad of “Food Network” shows that include “Guy’s Grocery Games” and the ubiquitous “Diners, Drive-Ins and Dives”, there’s barely a moment when the self-proclaimed Mayor of Flavortown’s bleach blond head and grinning mug isn’t gracing your screen. But before the chef/author/TV host became one of the most recognizable culinary personalities in America, known both for his huge personality and bold yet approachable fare, he got his start in Las Vegas. Fieri calls the University of Nevada, Las Vegas his alma mater, as he graduated

from the William F. Harrah College of Hotel Administration in 1990 (his oldest son Hunter is following in his UNLV footsteps as well). Believe it or not, he was a starving college student just like the rest of us, so he got creative when it came to eating on a budget. One of his go-to favorites was to dress up some thick-cut fries with hot sauce and blue cheese for a faux-Buffalo snack. Visitors have been flocking to his first Las Vegas restaurant at The LINQ, Guy Fieri Vegas Kitchen and Bar, since it opened in 2014, clamoring for Fieri-esque signatures such as his award-winning bacon mac-n-cheese burger. The Vegas Fries are a nod to Fieri’s college creation, except fancier, made with sidewinder fries tossed in buffalo seasoning and blue cheese crumbles, served with house-made buffalo sauce and blue cheese wasabi (that’s blue-sabi in Guy parlance). Fieri’s newest endeavor is as cheeky as he is: El Burro Borracho (the drunken donkey, en español), which recently opened at Rio All-Suite Hotel and Casino. Fun is the name of the game at the Mexican eatery, but Fieri also emphasizes that he’s offering “really good ingredients cooked in a very authentic manner with strong discipline in seasoning and composition.”

Chef Guy Fieri

Award-winning bacon mac-n-cheese burger

Growing up in California—and eventually owning property in Mexico—has helped shape Fieri’s taste of regional fare. There are classic versions of dishes such as grilled street corn and al pastor, but the true Fieri touch can be found in others such as lava rock shrimp tacos and the physics-defying stack of Trash Can nachos. Fieri’s has earned his reputation for being a regular guy, the one you’d want to watch the game and have a few drinks with, but who’s got chops at both the tailgate party and in the kitchen—and he’s learned some of those chops right in the heart of Las Vegas! A TASTE OF OLD AND NEW MEXICO SAY ADIOS TO YOUR PLAIN TACOS AND BURRITOS! By Grace Bascos

I

TACOS EL GORDO, 3049 S. LAS VEGAS BOULEVARD

While this late-night favorite’s offerings of piledhigh nachos, quesadillas, burritos and tacos are pretty standard, it’s the fillings and toppings that piqued our interest. The al pastor, marinated pork slow-roasted with pineapples on a spit, is at once spicy and a little sweet. The carne asada is tender and juicy, ideal for tacos or atop a mountain of French fries with nacho toppings that make the hybrid carne asada fries. You’ll also run into the offal offerings that are more traditional of taquerias in Mexico City including lengua (tongue), sesos (brains) and tripa (tripe). tacoselgordobc.com

MESA GRILL, CAESARS PALACE

Bobby Flay’s flagship is about as New Mexican as it gets—both in cuisine and regional origins. The “Food Network” chef’s trademark bold flavors and love of spice derive specifically from Southwestern cuisine. It’s not knock-your-socksoff heat (though there are a few habañeros found on the menu), but rather smoky, subtle notes from chilies such as anchos and Cascabel along with tangy green varieties direct from New Mexico. For a taste of Flay’s signature fare in a nutshell, don’t miss the Tiger Shrimp Roasted Garlic Corn Tamale topped with a corn cilantro sauce. caesars.com/caesars-palace/ restaurants/mesa-grill

BORDER GRILL, MANDALAY BAY AND FORUM SHOPS AT CAESARS

There happen to be two Borders on the Strip. Both outposts, by Too Hot Tamales’ Susan Feniger and Mary Sue Milliken, are devoted to their modern take on regional fare from Mexico City, Oaxaca and the Yucatan. Expect bright notes on dishes such as achiote rubbed pork shoulder braised in banana leaves, or Veracruz-style red snapper deep-fried and dressed with white wine oregano butter and olives. The two locations offer the famed Border Brunch on weekends featuring unlimited small plates with crossover appeal such as Peruvian Shrimp and Grits with green chilies and Yucatan Egg Benedict: achiote roasted pork atop a manchego cheese biscuit and dressed with Hollandaise. bordergrill.com 16

f you’ve traveled across the border to our neighbor to the South, you know that traditional Mexican fare is so much more than tequila, quesadillas and crunchy tacos. Luckily, Las Vegas is home to restaurants that emulate both classic styles and new takes on the boldly flavored fare. The only thing that might taste the same? The tequila!

ierre Gagnaire might not recall the first dish he ever made, but the Michelinstarred chef behind one of Las Vegas’ most esteemed French restaurants, Twist by Pierre Gagnaire, does remember the moment he realized he had a gift for cooking. “I was about 17 or 18 years old,” Gagnaire told Sunseeker. “I was with friends and there was almost nothing in the fridge. It just had a few ingredients and I was able to create something with those. To this day, that’s when I felt I had the touch.” Named Le Chef magazine’s most influential chef in 2015, Gagnaire opened Twist by Pierre Gagnaire—his first and only restaurant in the United States—in 2009. Located on the 23rd floor of Mandarin Oriental, Las Vegas, the

stunning restaurant features a menu of classic French cuisine with a modern “twist” that changes seasonally, showcasing the Frenchborn chef’s impeccable flair in the kitchen. “It’s important to offer dishes that agree with the season,” Gagnaire explained. “During the summer I like to incorporate fruits—cherries, strawberries, blueberries—as much as possible, and not just in desserts. I also like more seafood in the summer: lobster, shrimp, eel, trout.” While menu items change often, there are a few favorites that remain from season to season. “Guests love the Langoustine (crispy langoustine with Terre de Sienne spice, Feuille de Brick, green lentils, bean sprouts, yellow mango, coconut foam and salpicón with green peppercorns), so we like to keep that on our menu,” Gagnaire said. “In Las Vegas, you have to offer meat (steak), too. It’s impossible to avoid, but we make it elegant.” Gagnaire credits the restaurant’s continued success on the Strip with having a menu and environment that’s both “comfortable and joyful.” Clearly he knows what he’s talking about: Twist by Pierre Gagnaire recently received Forbes Travel Guide’s coveted Five-Star award for the fifth consecutive year.

DINE LIKE A LOCAL LATE-NIGHT DINING FAVORITES IN LAS VEGAS By H. Wadowski

as Vegas may have plenty of delectable dining options open ’round the clock, but not all of them can lure locals to their tables late at night. The extensive menus at these three eateries, however, are true locals’ favorites, dishing out quality fare at any hour.

THE BOOTLEGGER BISTRO

Celebrating its 15th anniversary, this family-run bistro at 7700 S. Las Vegas Blvd. offers a menu of classic Italian dishes from chef Maria Perry, Nevada’s first Restaurateur of the Year, who began serving Las Vegas in 1949. Although a Night Owl menu is offered from 11 p.m. to 6 a.m. featuring such popular items as the

Seafood Diavolo—clams, calamari, shrimp and mussels served cioppino style over linguine in a spicy tomato sauce—and Lasagna, guests can also enjoy Bootlegger’s full menu 24/7 by request. Be sure to stop by on Monday night to see some of the Strip’s most popular performers come in to sing and play during Kelly Clinton’s “Celebrity Cabaret.” The open mic begins at 9 p.m. and runs until midnight. bootleggerlasvegas.com

EL DORADO CANTINA

This upscale Mexican restaurant at 3025 Sammy Davis Jr. Dr. boasts a menu of authentic regional Mexican dishes that are free of antibiotics, pesticides and steroids, with an array of GMO-free and organic dishes available, too. Serving breakfast, lunch and dinner 24 hours a day, late-night diners can feast upon such palate-pleasing selections as the three-cheese Queso Fundido with chorizo or mushrooms, grilled Mexican Corn coated with organic mayonnaise, queso fresco and cayenne pepper powder and citrus-marinated Carne Asada. Portions are large but make sure to save room for dessert. The gluten-free Flan is arguably the best you’ll find north of the border. eldoradovegas.com

PEPPERMILL RESTAURANT AND LOUNGE

One of the few restaurants on the Strip that can attract locals at any hour, this Las Vegas staple serves its entire menu 24 hours a day, so guests can dig in to anything from omelets to burgers. Late-night favorites include the New York Steak and Eggs and the Conquest sandwich: a towering combination of roast beef, cheddar cheese, tomato, sautéed peppers, onions, mushrooms, Thousand Island dressing and bacon on grilled Parmesan sourdough. Keep your eyes peeled while you eat, as you never know which celebrity might stop by to cure their hunger pangs or enjoy a cocktail in the adjoining Fireside Lounge. peppermilllasvegas.com DINING

Barri Griffiths as Chief Archer in one of “KÀ’s” more physically demanding fight scenes

HAIL TO THE CHIEF

FORMER WWE SUPERSTAR LEAVES HIS MARK ON CIRQUE DU SOLEIL’S “KÀ” By Heather Turk

T

he cast of Cirque du Soleil’s “KÀ” may be comprised of many superstar athletes, but it wasn’t until recently a former WWE Superstar joined the cast. Barri Griffiths, better known to wrestling fans by his ring name, Mason Ryan, debuted in Cirque du Soleil’s mesmerizing martial arts spectacular last December. The coming-ofage story of a Twin Brother and Sister who embark on a perilous journey to fulfill their destinies, Griffiths plays the villainous Chief Archer—a role he surprisingly learned about from his former employer.

“When people hear there’s a wrestler [in ‘KÀ’] they think I’m doing gymnastics or the high wire, but my role is the tough guy,” Griffiths explained. “Cirque was constantly asking me to put my own stamp on the character, so we developed the character to be more active and have more brutal fights.” During one of the rechoreographed fight scenes, Griffiths actually picks up another cast member over his head and throws him from the stage into an acrobatic net below. Griffiths credits his wrestling background for making the fights look so believable. While Griffiths enjoys being a villain, he knows there’s more to Chief Archer than just being “brutally barbaric.” “He has a good side,” Griffiths stated. “He has a daughter who he loves dearly, so it’s interesting to show both sides of the character.” For fans wondering if Griffiths ever plans on returning to the ring, Griffiths said his main focus right now is on being the best Chief Archer he can be—although if there’s anything this experience has taught him, it’s that you never know what the future holds. “I find myself in the training room watching all these amazing athletes workout and wonder, ‘How on earth did I end up here?’” Griffiths said. “This is just a dream come true.”

“When I left WWE, I left on good terms so we still kept in touch,” Griffiths, who continued to wrestle independently, recalled. “One day I got a call out of the blue from WWE about a job opportunity, so naturally I thought it was wrestling related. When they asked if I wanted to audition for a role in ‘KÀ’ it blew my socks off. That was the last thing I expected.”

Griffiths beat out three other wrestlers he knew for the part, which was then reworked to show off his unique skill set.

efore you check out Blue Man Group’s exciting new show at Luxor Hotel and Casino, go behind the scenes of one of Las Vegas’ longest-running productions with the Behind the Blue experience. Available for $55 with any ticket purchase, the 75-minute tour takes place each night before Blue Man Group’s first performance. Participants will meet up with their tour guide in the theater lobby two hours before show time to sign a waiver and pick out their complimentary luminescent souvenir from the gift shop before

After learning some of the show’s secrets, including what Blue Man Group’s grease-based face paint feels like, guests will briefly be taken back outside of the showroom so that they can see some past photos from Blue Man Group posted on the theater’s walls. It’s interesting to hear which photos are from other Blue Man Group productions and which images are of Blue Man Group’s founders, Chris Wink, Matt Goldman and Phil Stanton. One photo that’s particularly noteworthy is of the original Blue Men walking through New York City with a casket—signifying the death of the ’80s as a way to welcome the ’90s. The bit was filmed by MTV News, thrusting Blue Man Group into the national spotlight for the first time. The Behind the Blue experience concludes with participants sitting in on that evening’s soundcheck, where the cast and crew warm up and prepare for the night’s performances. Not only will guests get to see the Blue Men run through a few songs, but they’ll also get to watch them practice one of the show’s signature bits where one Blue Man throws gumballs and marshmallows into the other two Blue Men’s mouths.

hile jukebox musicals may appeal to a broader audience than traditional musicals, it takes more than a soundtrack comprised of popular songs to entertain ticket holders—you need an engaging story, too. Allegiant passengers will find three of musical theater’s most well-written jukebox musicals currently playing in Las Vegas. Whether they’re using their radio-friendly hits to recount a true tale or weave an exciting new yarn, these shows always leave audiences cheering for more than just their familiar score.

“JERSEY BOYS” AT PARIS LAS VEGAS

This Tony Award-winning production uses the music of Frankie Valli and The Four Seasons to tell the incredible true story of four blue-collar guys who “put Jersey on the map.” Although the show features 30 of the Rock and Roll Hall of Famers’ timeless hits, including “Sherry” and “Big Girls Don’t Cry,” what really keeps audiences glued to their seats is the captivating rags-to-riches story. A tale filled with humor and heartache, “Jersey Boys” is sure to have audiences saying “Oh, what a night!” by the time it’s over. jerseyboysinfo.com/vegas

Audiences get to be a fly on the wall for one of the greatest rock ’n’ roll jam sessions in history and watch as events unfold that forever changed the course of four legends’ lives. While audiences may initially be drawn to “Million Dollar Quartet” for its music, it’s the true story at the heart of the show that ends up leaving the biggest impression. mdqvegas.com

From left to right, Jason Martinez (Nick Massi), Travis Cloer (Frankie Valli), Jason Kappus (Bob Gaudio) and Daniel Robert Sullivan (Tommy DeVito) in the Las Vegas production of “Jersey Boys”

Set on the Sunset Strip in 1987, this rockin’ musical has audiences singing along to some of the decade’s biggest hits—like Journey’s “Don’t Stop Believin’” and Whitesnake’s “Here I Go Again”—as it tells the story of a smalltown girl and a city boy who move to Los Angeles in search of fame and love. Having recently moved from The Venetian to a more intimate theater at the Rio, audiences are now even closer to the action. HUMAN NATURE’S “JUKEBOX” TAKES AUDIENCES ON A MUSICAL JOURNEY By Heather Turk

A

ustralian vocal sensations Human Nature have much to celebrate this spring. Not only does the month of May mark the group’s seventh anniversary of performing on the Las Vegas Strip, but the acclaimed quartet also recently debuted a new show at The Venetian, “Jukebox,” which will run through 2018.

2014 album, Jukebox, a collection of covers from the 1950s and ’60s that was released in Australia and ultimately inspired the Las Vegas show. The album is scheduled for release in North America later this year and Human Nature is already planning on recording a second volume that showcases additional covers performed in the Las Vegas production.

A departure from the hit Motown show that made the group one of the Entertainment Capital of the World’s most beloved acts, “Jukebox” features Human Nature’s foursome—Toby Allen, Phil Burton and brothers Andrew and Mike Tierney—performing a wide range of music, from early doo-wop to songs from today.

In honor of the production’s name, an actual jukebox has been installed in the showroom’s foyer featuring 20 to 30 songs. Each night during the show, Human Nature performs their own unique version of the song that gets picked the most by ticket holders.

“The Motown show was a great start for us, but this show shows audiences more of what we can do,” said Andrew Tierney. “Singing Motown music is just a part of our career—it’s not all of it.”

“Jukebox” runs Tuesday through Saturday at 7 p.m. inside The Venetian’s Sands Showroom. Tickets start at just $49.50, plus tax and fees, with VIP options available. For more information, visit humannaturelive.com.

Featuring a seven-piece band and world-class dancers, the 90-minute production showcases a set list of songs that connect to Human Nature in some way.

“Since we’re a big boy band in Australia, we sing some songs from boy bands that influenced us,” Tierney said. “There’s some New Kids on the Block and a little *NSYNC and Backstreet Boys, but we also broaden the term ‘boy band’ to include groups like The Beach Boys and The Beatles.” Naturally, Human Nature peppers in a few Motown classics throughout the production as well, including songs by The Temptations and The Jackson 5. Fans can also expect to hear a couple of the group’s original numbers, like “End of Days” and “He Don’t Love You.” “End of Days” was featured on Human Nature’s

With ticket prices starting at only $31.95, plus tax and fees, ticket holders will find this quirky production to be well worth every penny. mackingshow.com

What’s better than show tickets at an affordable price? How about dinner and a show at a great price? This medieval-themed dinner show lets guests enjoy an action-packed production plus a delicious three-course dinner starting at just $58.23, plus tax and fees. Audiences can feast upon a meal fit for a king (the “Dragon’s Blood” is the best tomato soup in town and the Cornish game hens are always juicy) while watching knights joust, fair maidens dance and even some pyrotechnics. Great for kids and bringing out the kid in adults, even the shyest ticket holder will be shouting “Huzzah!” by the time the evening is over. excalibur.com/en/ entertainment/tournament-of-kings.html

“MENOPAUSE THE MUSICAL” AT HARRAH’S LAS VEGAS

A celebration of women and The Change, the 90-minute production features parodies of classic songs from the 1960s, ’70s and ’80s as the show’s four stars—the Iowa Housewife, the Professional Woman, the Soap Star and the Earth Mother—sing about “The Silent Passage.” Ticket holders will not only leave the musical feeling empowered, but thanks to the show’s intimate setting inside The Improv Showroom that allows cast members to perform among the audience, they’ll also feel like they’re a part of the production. Tickets start at $49.95, plus tax and fees. Mention code MMALL and receive two tickets for $89 (additional fees may apply). caesars.com/harrahs-las-vegas/ shows/menopause-the-musical

REPLENISH YOUR BODY GET THE HOOK UP AT REVIV By Heather Turk

ost people’s idea of a good time in Las Vegas probably doesn’t involve being hooked up to an IV at some point during their trip, but REVIV inside MGM Grand is changing that. The wellness spa opened in August of 2013 to help replenish guests with a variety of intravenous and vitamin hydration treatments. Developed by a group of experienced emergency room physicians, REVIV features a wide range of hydration treatments to combat dehydration, whether it’s from time in the sun, a late night out, a strenuous workout or even before or after a long flight. Not surprisingly, its hydration treatments have become very popular with professional fighters after a bout at the MGM Grand Garden Arena, while vitamin drip infusions in general are gaining popularity thanks to celebrities like Rihanna and Simon Cowell who are doing them.

will also constantly check up on guests to make sure everything is going smoothly. Several types of IV infusions are available, including the MEGABOOST vitamin wellness cleanse ($149) that includes multivitamins, antioxidants and immunity support and the ULTRAVIV recovery infusion ($149) that has vitamin B12 and anti-nausea and anti-inflammatory medications. A ROYAL FLUSH deluxe infusion ($239) is available as well that combines both treatments. REVIV also recently introduced two new IVs: a pure hydration saline infusion called HYDROMAX ($99) and an anti-aging infusion called VITAGLOW ($149) that’s packed with glutathione. Booster shots are available, too. For more information, visit revivme.com or call 702.644.4466.

“Not to sound chic,” said REVIV’s medical director, Raanan Pokroy M.D., “but it really works. People are overwhelmed afterwards by how good they feel.”

The process is fairly simple. After choosing what type of IV infusion a guest wants, visitors are asked to fill out a quick questionnaire to make sure they don’t have any medical problems that might affect the treatment. Then, guests are brought back to the prep room where some vital signs are taken (blood pressure, pulse, temperature). Once they get the okay from the resident nurse, they are escorted into a private room where they are hooked up to the IV of their choice. While the treatment is being performed, guests will be given an iPad to help pass the time as they relax in a soothing full-body massage chair. Since the fluids are kept at room temperature, guests may get a little chilly as the IV drip enters their veins, but blankets are provided to keep visitors nice and cozy. The resident nurse

ROCK OUT IN DOWNTOWN LAS VEGAS POPULAR SUMMER CONCERT SERIES RETURNS TO FREMONT STREET EXPERIENCE By Heather Turk

elebrating its eighth season, Fremont Street Experience’s Rock of Vegas summer concert series returns to downtown Las Vegas on Memorial Day weekend with a starstudded lineup! One of the most popular summertime events in Las Vegas, the concert series attracts thousands of music lovers each year to Fremont Street Experience’s live music stages to enjoy free performances by some of the industry’s biggest acts. Artists who have performed as part of the Rock of Vegas summer concert series include such notable names as KC and the Sunshine Band, Spin Doctors, Bret Michaels, The Smithereens, Seether and Kansas.

In addition to being the lead singer of The Blackhearts, the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame inductee co-founded the pioneering all-girl punk quartet The Runaways when she was just 15 years old. Following Joan Jett & The Blackhearts’ rockin’ performance, American rock band 3 Doors Down (“Kryptonite,” “When I’m Gone”) will return to Rock of Vegas with a can’t-miss show of their own on June 11. Other acts scheduled to perform throughout the summer include Cherry

This year we have some popular returning bands, such as 3 Doors Down, as well as some exciting newcomers to the series, such as Joan Jett & The Blackhearts and Melissa Etheridge.” Joan Jett & The Blackhearts will kick off this year’s Rock of Vegas summer concert series with what’s sure to be an unforgettable performance on the 3rd Street Stage Saturday, May 28 at 9 p.m. Best known for such classic songs as “Bad 56

Smash Mouth will then close out this year’s “All Star” lineup with the season’s final concert, performing Saturday, September 3 over Labor Day weekend. All Rock of Vegas performances are scheduled to take place on either the 3rd or 1st Street stages beginning at 9 p.m. Guests are encouraged to arrive early for the best possible vantage point, especially during the big UFC International Fight Week concert on July 7 which will be announced at a later date. While you’re at Fremont Street Experience, be sure to check out its many other exciting attractions. In addition to direct pedestrian access to eight casinos and more than 60 restaurants, bars and specialty retail kiosks, the five-block entertainment district is home to Viva Vision: a 1,500-foot-long, 90-foot-wide video screen suspended 90 feet above pedestrians. Viva Vision features nightly light and sound shows boasting 12.5 million LED lights and a 550,000-watt sound system. More than 17 million visitors a year take in the performances, which run every hour from dusk until 1 a.m. during the summer and last about six minutes. Shows currently playing include musical tributes to Heart, The Who, Bon Jovi and Las Vegas’ own Imagine Dragons. Fremont Street Experience is also home to one of Las Vegas’ most thrilling attractions: the 12-story zip line SlotZilla. Boasting the world’s largest slot machine motif, approximately 1,000 flyers brave the towering attraction each day. Adrenaline junkies have the option of either “zipping” or “zooming” safely over Fremont Street Experience. Flyers on the lower Zipline take off from the lower tier of the SlotZilla tower, 77 feet above the street, and zip in a traditional

seated-harness position for a flight that’s half the length of Fremont Street Experience—850 feet in just 30 seconds! Flyers on the upper Zoomline, however, launch from 114 feet in the air, zooming in a horizontal Supermanlike position for 60 seconds traveling 1,750 feet down the entire length of Fremont Street Experience. Speeds of up to 35 miles per hour are reached—talk about a rush! Staying true to Fremont Street’s affordability factor, tickets to fly on SlotZilla are only $25 for the Zipline and $45 for the Zoomline. Guests can save $5 on either line by flying before 6 p.m. For more information on SlotZilla and Fremont Street Experience’s many other attractions, including Rock of Vegas, visit vegasexperience.com.

or all the millennials whose parents told them that playing video games would never amount to anything, now is your chance to prove them wrong. The future of gaming has arrived in downtown Las Vegas thanks to Downtown Grand Hotel & Casino’s new Downtown Underground eSports Lounge. Powered by local gaming technology company Leet, the 1,140-square-foot space is designed to house video game programs and platforms of all kinds with video game stations able to accommodate up to 50 players depending on the tournament. Although Downtown Grand is one of the first Las Vegas casino properties to embrace eSports, the worldwide phenomenon is expected to become a nearly $500 million industry by the end of 2016. Currently there are approximately 32 million eSports fans in the United States, and that number is expected to grow to more than 50 million by 2017 according to the research firm Newzoo. Downtown Grand has already hosted several exciting gaming events since the lounge opened last October, including the opening event for the 2016 Madden Community Championship powered by GamerSaloon this past March. The winning team walked away with $1,200. The property also hosted the Wargaming.net League North America Season 2 2016 Regional Finals for the popular multiplayer online video game

DOWNTOWN

Additionally, Downtown Grand began hosting members of a newly created eSports league for the world’s top players of the first-person shooter game “Counter-Strike: Global Offensive” last November. Named the LA Renegades, the five eSports athletes from Australia are currently on property not only training for eSports league competitions in a private practice room, but also hosting meet-and-greets and exhibition tournament events that are open to the public. Gaming events are held every Friday and Saturday night in the Downtown Underground eSports Lounge with pricing depending on the type of tournament. Winners are guaranteed at least a $250 cash prize. April eSports tournaments included such popular games as “Street Fighter V,” “Mortal Kombat XI,” “FIFA 16,” “League of Legends” and “Super Smash Bros.” Seating is arranged to include couches and single plush seats for lounging and spectator seating. Daily rates are also available for drop-in play 24 hours a day. Downtown Grand is located on 3rd Street between Ogden and Stewart Avenues. Spicy, chunky ribs are a favorite at Los Dos Molinos

NEW MEXICAN CUISINE THESE PHOENIX AREA RESTAURANTS SERVE THE SPICY REGIONAL FAVORITE By Amy Young

N

ew Mexican cuisine is the regional fare of New Mexico that includes influences from Spanish, Mexican, Mediterranean, Native American and cowboy cultures. One of its prominent traits is the spicy sauce, made from red or green New Mexico chile peppers, that adorns many dishes. This style of food is known and loved for its heat levels, which vary based on the type and amount of chiles included in a dish. Phoenix obviously isn’t in New Mexico but several local restaurants carry the fiery torch.

LA RISTRA NEW MEXICAN KITCHEN Gilbert, Arizona, in Phoenix’s East Valley has become a hotspot for dining. La Ristra is a spicy part of that mix. Here, the Blue Corn Enchiladas are New Mexican-style, meaning stacked, not rolled. You pick the filling and the sauce(s) and the restaurant will serve it to you topped with a fried egg. The roasted, bone-in Pork Carnitas are another favorite; tender and piquant. laristraaz.com.

LOS DOS MOLINOS

Some like it hot; really hot. If you’re in that camp, the folks at Los Dos Molinos say that they “don’t know how to do mild,” so you’re in luck. Let red chiles dance on your tongue as you bite into menu items such as the Carne Adovada Ribs, a generous plate of country-style pork ribs resting in red chile. The menu is loaded with a variety of choices including burritos, tacos and flautas. Sopapillas for dessert are a wise choice—the pillow-y bites of light and crispy fried dough can be sweetened with honey, powdered sugar, cinnamon sugar or a combo of all three. Wash it all down with a Prickly Pear Margarita. losdosmolinosphoenix.com 72

A long-running area hotspot, the combination of delicious food and hearty portions has patrons returning in droves, along with a steady influx of new guests. The menu gives you plenty of ways to find out if you have a red or green sauce preference. One example is the Carne Adovada, which finds chunks of smoky pork surrounded by tingly red sauce. Or order up the New Mexico Enchiladas with your choice of meat or cheese and top them with the zesty green sauce. Everything here has a kick, including their proprietary Green Chile Potato, which is a whipped spud stuffed into a roasted green chile pepper. richardsonsnm.com

Raw, fresh and artistic at Yasu Sushi Bistro

DESERT DINING SUSHI IS AN UNEXPECTED DESERT FAVORITE By Amy Young

O

ver the last decade, Phoenix area restaurants have become dining destinations for a wide range of cuisine, especially sushi. In a desert region where temperatures often hover around 100 degrees and higher, you wouldn’t expect to find a seafood mecca, but with so many outstanding restaurants serving fresh and innovative sushi and Asian-inspired dishes, it became inevitable. Here is a sampling.

Located in Glendale, one of Phoenix’s west side suburbs, Tokyo Lobby offers sushi lovers a cozy and casual atmosphere in which to enjoy items from sushi and grill menus. The former boasts tasty and fresh choices like ahi tuna, yellowtail belly and red snapper served with rice or sashimistyle. The latter sizzles up goodies such as the shrimp lettuce wrap and the delectable Monkey Brain–a deep fried mushroom covered in crab and spicy tuna. Specialty rolls are a Tokyo Lobby favorite. Concoctions include the Aloha, which puts fresh tuna and pineapple with yogurt sauce atop a California roll. tokyolobbysushi.com

SAKANA SUSHI AND GRILL

This north Phoenix sushi bar offers an upscale dining experience in an intimate and laid back atmosphere. Chef and owner Yasu Hashino is exceptionally particular about the fish

With locations in Ahwatukee, Glendale, Mesa and Scottsdale, a meal at Sakana is always in range for metropolitan Phoenix residents and visitors. Each spot has a relaxed feel allowing guests to enjoy themselves whether donning shorts or a suit. If it’s hot food you’re craving, there are entrees such as the Ten Spice Salmon, White Fish Sauté and different ramen, udon and soups. Hand cut fresh fish options from the sushi menu include house smoked salmon, mackerel and eel. Sakana offers a Happy Roll menu, which includes specialty rolls like the Cajun Wild Fish Roll and the Omega 3 Roll (with salmon skin), throughout the week and limited times on weekends. sakanasushiandgrill.com

Kamehameha Day, June 11, is an official state holiday honoring the great warrior king who united the Hawaiian Islands and established a ruling dynasty that endured for nearly 80 years. On Friday, June 10, long floral garlands will be draped over the arms of the Kamehameha statue fronting Aliiolani Hale, the Judiciary Building (417 South King Street). The following morning, a parade of floats, marching bands and equestrian units will delight spectators as it proceeds along Punchbowl Street, Ala Moana Boulevard and Kalakaua Avenue to Kapiolani Park. A festival featuring arts, crafts, entertainment and ono (delicious) local food will unfold from 11 a.m. until 4 p.m. 808. 586-0333 or go to ags.hawaii.gov/kamehameha

Birthdays, weddings, anniversaries, graduations, promotions, welcoming visitors and saying goodbye to them—kamaaina (longtime Island residents) give leis to loved ones for just about every occasion. When you can’t find the right words, leis say it all beautifully. May 1 is Lei Day in Hawaii and this year marks Oahu’s 89th annual observance at Kapiolani Park in Waikiki. Events and activities are planned from

9 a.m. to 5:30 p.m., including entertainment, the investiture of the Lei Court and an exhibit of leis made from an array of fresh ferns and flowers. (808) 768-3041 or go to honoluluparks.com

Could Allegiant Be Your Career Destination? We know you love to GO on vacation... Now, make vacations possible for others by joining the Allegiant Team!

Many jobs available, including Flight Attendants! To apply & view other career opportunities go to:

HAROLD “TIM” WRIGHT

ALLEGIANT TEAM MEMBER SPOTLIGHT HAROLD “TIM” WRIGHT, MAINTENANCE TECHNICIAN, MESA, ARIZ.

O

ur mechanics work diligently to make sure that our planes are ready for hundreds of travelers each day. Even though they work behind the scenes and under planes, their hard work does not go unnoticed. Meet Harold, a Maintenance Technician at Allegiant’s Phoenix/Mesa maintenance base. Harold loves to travel just as much as our passengers and has a decades-long passion for the aviation industry he loves. Sunseeker: How long have you been working for Allegiant? Harold: I’ve been with Allegiant for one year, but have been working on planes for more than three decades. I specialize in working on MD-80s and A319s. Sunseeker: What about your job gets you excited to go to work? Harold: Each day is something new for me. We often take road trips to other cities to work on our planes, so even though I am based in Mesa I have had the opportunity to travel to bases all over the West Coast as well as one of our newer bases in Cincinnati, Ohio. Sunseeker: What was your journey to becoming a mechanic? Harold: I love it; it’s in my blood. I grew up on

a farm in a small town south of Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania. I was always fixing things and tinkering around on the farm. I later went on to spend 21 years in the Air Force working on planes. To this day, I work on my cars and my motorcycle in my spare time. Sunseeker: What would you say is your favorite thing about being an aircraft mechanic? Harold: The best part is watching the plane “rotate and climb”, which means watching the plane take off. I also love my team members; everyone is thorough, professional and great to work with. Sunseeker: What has been your favorite part about working at Allegiant? Harold: I enjoy seeing and experiencing new things each day, especially while doing what I love the most. I also love to travel, so being able to fly to different states all over the country is also another great aspect of working for Allegiant. Sunseeker: If you could travel anywhere in the United States on vacation at this moment, where would you go? Harold: I love traveling anywhere and everywhere. There are so many different places to visit in the United State; every place is an experience. Between working for Allegiant and my previous work experience, I have been lucky enough to travel to all 50 states. Sunseeker: Do you have a “locals” tip for Allegiant travelers going to the Phoenix/Mesa area? Harold: Mesa is beautiful. We have a lot of parks, mountains and lakes. I love being able to ride my motorcycle through Mesa and seeing all of the amazing scenery. Arizona is unique because within three hours you can travel from a desert oasis to snowy ski resorts in nearby Flagstaff. SUNSEEKER

ALLEGIANT EMPLOYEES WALK FOR WISHES

T

his past spring, Allegiant employees turned out in record numbers for the Las Vegas Walk For Wishes event. Held annually by the Make-A-Wish® Foundation of Southern Nevada, the 5k walk helps raise needed donations for Wishgranting services. Las Vegas-based Allegiant has enthusiastically supported and sponsored the Las Vegas fundraiser each year since partnering with Make-A-Wish® in 2012. Employees have always been excited to participate and this year was no exception. More than 140 employees turned out to help raise over $400,000 for the local Make-AWish® chapter.

The Las Vegas walk is one of seven in Allegiant cities across the country that the company has committed to sponsoring in 2016. This is just one of the ways Allegiant is dedicated to making travel wishes come true with Make-A-Wish®. In the four years since Allegiant’s first MakeA-Wish® flight, more than 500 Wish kids have flown aboard Allegiant to their Wish destinations. The company has also helped raise $625,000 over the years through direct sponsorships for events like the Walk for Wishes as well as through sales of the Wingz Snack Pack—$1 from every sale is donated to Make-A-Wish®. Be aware of the following: • Location of the nearest emergency exit • Location of your emergency oxygen mask, if needed • Correct procedure for exiting the cabin in an emergency SEAT BELTS Seat belts must be fastened ANY TIME the seat belt sign is on, during taxi, takeoff and landing. Once the seat belt sign is turned off, you may walk around the cabin. Due to unexpected turbulence, it is strongly recommended that you keep your seat belt fastened any time while in your seat. Allegiant’s exit seating policy does not allow the use of seat belt extensions in the exit seats due to tripping hazards.
